Education is a major part of building a better bay area, especially right now as students are returning to school. Many School Districts are starting off the year with Distance Learning because of covid19 and today San Franciscos board of education is expected to ratify a deal that the School District made with the Teachers Union. The teachers signed off on it yesterday and guarantees at least two hours of live online instruction every day. Teachers will get additional training and planning time, plus a stiven to help with the cost of working from home. School starts next monday. On the peninsula, schools in south San Francisco are pushing back the start of the academic year. Now theyll start on monday instead of tomorrow as originally planned. Schools will use Distance Learning for at least the first three weeks and bring students back to schools in phases, if conditions allow. In Contra Costa County classes start on thursday but what Distance Learning looks like is a product of negotiations with teachers and also the result of extensive input from parents and students. Much of what they will see this fall are from lessons from last spring. Classes will offer more interactive experience. An Elementary School student will be in School Virtually 8 00 to 2 00. In a given class period we expect 50 to 60 of that time would be the teacher directly talking to the kids and instructing them and working with the kids. The rest of that time, while kids are in class, may be independent learning, group learning, onetoone time. Districts also plan to have more resources for parents to make sure that they can help their kids succeed. The pandemic is not only impacted academics, but also impacting college sports.
