And more than 5,000 undergrads now know that they will begin the new year online. Santa Clara UniversityJust Announced that they will continue Distance Learning for now. All this week abc 7 news has been focusing on what back to School Looks Like as part of our mission to build a better bay area. And today were focusing on colleges. Lauren martinez is live on campus with the message from the universitys president. Reporter yeah, with six weeks to go, santa Clara University announced that they will begin courses primarily online for undergraduates. Father obrien, the president of scu, in a letter said that the state of california has not yet issued any up dated guidance to higher education, but recent dwrenkt differences have required k through 12 schools to begin their year online. Sme scu students and families have reached out to the school because they have experienced financial hardships from the pandemic and have a for assistance. Santa clara created a relief fund for them in a video message, father obrien said he understands how disappointing this decision is for the campus community. This uncertainty can be so overwhelming and creates anxious times for your families and for each of you. We were hoping and praying that we would be in a different situation in the bay area and california and in our country by now, but the data and the science show a different picture unfortunately. Now, they are joined in this decision by many other universities locally including the university of San Francisco, uc berkeley, and san jose state. They just came up with an agreement in the School System after days of negotiating and protests, the Teachers Association and district agreed to Distance Learning and hybrid eventually. Teachers will get five days of extensive training and so the school year will start august 24. Teachers will have the option of either working from home or working in their empty classroom. Garrett rolfe was fired june 13th, the day after he fatally shot brooks outside a wendys restaurant. He filed a lawsuit against the mayor and interim police chief saying it violated his Constitutional Rights and city code. He faces 11 charges including felony murder. Yesterday prosecutors asked a judge to revoke rolfes bond. They say he went on a vacation to florida without permission. Happening today, john burriss plans to file a federal civil rights lawsuit against the city of vallejo and one of its officersoff the de over the sho man suspected of looting. It did look like they were clearing the situation up, they opened all of the lanes and then things reverted back very quickly and they now have one lane blocked. It happened last night at 11 00, San Leandro Police say they were pursuing a driver who they say was in a stolen car. And that chase carried over into oakland where the driver crashed into a parked car. Officers say the driver then got out of the car and that he had an assault style gun. Alameda county is now stepping into help in the effort to build a better bay area. The county set up a program that would pay infected people just over 1200 to stay home and quarantine. Partnered clinics would let the county know that patient has tested positive and needs financial help. Alameda county has set aside 10 million for this program and it is for people who are not eligible for any other kind of state or federal help and have tested positive for the virus. There is now an interactive map that can show you the risk of beingposed to covid19. Just pick the size of the group that you are with and click on a particular county. For example, if you are with a group of 25 people in San Francisco, there would be a 34 chance that at least one person in that group of 25 would have covid19. That map was created by georgia tech.
