This morning, japan has marked 75 years since the unleashing of the worlds first atomic bomb on hiroshima. 140,000 people were killed, nearly half the citys population. A scaledback, social distancing event was held with survivors and relatives marking the 8 15 a. M. Blast anniversary with a moment of silence. This morning, were opening up the abc news vault to august 1995, the 50th anniversary, with abcs carole simpson. 4,000 americans were there the day the bomb fell. Only 1,000 of them came home. Abcs deborah amos looks at how two of them are faring today. Reporter every other year, for nearly 20 years, kay yoshioka and jack diruike spend a day in a San Francisco clinic where a team of visiting japanese specialists check for cancer, blood diseases, and anything else that might be traced to what happened 50 years ago. Kay was 8 years old then, americanborn, but living in japan because her family had moved back to care for her grandmother. That summer, with american planes firebombing big cities, the japanese government evacuated children to rural areas. Kay was one of them. Living on august 6th in a village 25 miles outside of hiroshima. All of a sudden you heard this big explosion sound. Reporter and then kay saw a cloud. You have no idea what it was. Just a Mushroom Cloud came up on top of the mountain. First a purplish color, turned into a fiery red, and beautiful colors would start to roll up in the sky. Ndhe cter was a l you could feel it. And sparks flying off from the center of it. Reporter like kay, jack had been stranded in hiroshima for four years. Born in sacramento, an american child taken by his father to see a dying grandparent. By the summer of 1945, jack was in a military factory. The morning of august 6th was the beginning of a normal day. There was no warning at all. Streetcars running, people on the street, people reading the morning paper and so forth. 8 15 came, boom, the bomb exploded. Reporter within half an hour, jack saw the victims walking out of the city. A woman walking, like a ghost, she had rags hanging from her arms. Thats very strange. Turned out it was her skin that was hanging. Reporter a week later, kay would walk back into the city to find her family. The house was burned down. They had no place to go. Only place they could live is where the house used to be once. Reporter theres little else left from that time. A sewing machine saved from the rubble. And these documents. This is the certification of the other bomb victims. Reporter a certification by the japanese government that guarantees free medical care for life. Deborah amos, abc news. Again, 75 years ago today. Our hope is to be in a phase three efficacy trial in september of this year. Have there been any kind of effects on the humans that are detectable . So far, so good. Our thanks to bob woodruff for that report. We know the government is under way with operation warp speed and the need to try to get at least 300 million doses of the vaccine to particularly, first, those who need it the most, then the general population possibly by 2021.
