The battle over whether california schools should physically reopen could be headed to court. Education just one of the things were focused here on abc 7. The governor decided that schools have to remain closed if the county has been on the states watch list for two consecutive weeks or more. Amy hollyfield is live with this new lawsuit who says it shouldnt be up to the state. Amy. Reporter yeah, they want to see it go through the courts. The lawsuit says that the governor is playing politics with this decision and that children belong in school. According to this lawsuit, the plaintiffs believe that this order to stay at home will disproportionately hurt children of low income families, students of color and students wheith disabilities but says that all children will suffer from Distance Learning. Even parents with the most motivated and academically Successful Children reported depression, anxiety, withdrawal, behavioral issues, a lack of motivation. Reporter the governor has said science is driving his decisions during this pandemic. The lawsuit was filed by a group of nine parents and their children, the group is called the center for american liberty. The state has said that schools will be allowed to reopen for some inperson learning after meeting certain criteria. Amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. Some pleasanton parents are not happy where the way their district is handling the Distance Learning option. It requires them to enroll in a completely Different Program than what they would get in their regular school. Some parents are furious so much so that they held a protest. Students have two options. A hybrid model with at home and inperson instruction once that is allowed. Or a brand new system the district built to carry out fulltime Distance Learning. It would be different teachers ad curriculum. We are here asking the district to provide a full Distance Learning option until december 2020. We hope and know that flex academy will be just another layer of high quality education that is available for our parents. Upset parents want something similar to what Elementary Students are getting, one teacher live over zoom. The district says that it is too difficult to carry that out for older students. At the live desk, the latest numbers on coronavirus show a steady surge across the country. Were learning right now the hospitalizations are up in 40 states for the First Time Since may, there were more than 1,000 deaths reported in a single day. And now an alarming new report from the cdc that says that the number of people infected in the first month of the pandemic could be ten times higher than previously predicted. The director of the cdc dr. Redfield spoke morning ameri america if he would suggest a National Mask mandate. Im not sure that mandating makes. I think the issue is how to know straight americans to do that. Union leaders are calling on Hospital Management to make changes to better protect staff including providing more personal protective equipment. A trial is under way at stanford on a drug to treat coronavirus patients with mild symptoms who are at home. The drug is called favipiravir and it is approved to treat the flu in japan and coronavirus in china, india and russia. The stanford study involves 120 Adult Volunteers with newly confirmed covid19 who are outpatients. They can actually help us stop this epidemic, that is the group of people that needs to really be careful and not transmit to others because they are out in the public, they are working. Reporter good morning. It was a marathon vote, Oakland City Council meeting last night and voting against making any additional cuts to the Oakland Police department budget. As you mentioned, it was a deadlocked vote with mayor schaaf casting the deciding vote. Four Council Members were in favor of reallocating an additional 11 millio from the Oakland Police budget on top of the 14 million in cuts made to the department a month ago go whenever the overall city budget was passed. Mayor schaaf was the tie breaker voting no on the measure. Earlier in the day she cited lagging 911 call response times, and this is after someone sprayed graffiti on the mayors house overnight. They are still working to see dues the bun reduce the budget by 50 next year so they are going to vote on creating a task and the decisions were far are from a ea from easy, there were three hours of Public Comment last night. Happening today, we expect to get coronavirus updates from Governor Newsom and also from mayor breed. At and Santa Clara County has now topped 8,000 confirmed coronavirus cases after more than 250 cases were reported in just one day. And now the countys Health Officer is calling for a change in response. Jobina fortson has more on this. Dr. Cody says the path forward on this will require everyone to work together. Since the restrictions began, easing in mid may, Santa Clara County has seen a significant increase in the number of confirmed cases. Dr. Cody says that could continue unless there is a more regional or statewide response to the pandemic. Weekend forecast, warmer weather, on the way. Good morning, ill show you the Golden Gate Bridge too. Checking out the traffic in that area, it is having a nice flow into San Francisco this morning. But, yes r, the conditions may slightly impact your commute but there are no advisories issued. Bringing in the maps here in the north bay, we do have actually, lets start in San Francisco because of the 101 alameda project here. You can see southbound 101, that orange line, at least two lanes are blocked as crews work in that area. The full closure on the northbound lanes to the 280 interchange has opened up. And now in the north bay, we have a travel advisory southbound 10 to t1 the state 12 connector, that ramp is shut down due to a lets take a look at what is going on as far as our forecast. And well break it down into a 12 hour block and well start with what is going on right now in the south bay. And you can see maybe not as much mist that had been there, but it is still possible with mid 50s to low 60s. It will be brighter this afternoon. Still near 60 at the coast with 70 to 74 around the bay and inland. 76 to 82 at 4 00. And 50s and 60s mainly at. High fire danger, thunderstorms still threatening the sierra. In the north bay, you can now get fined in marin county for not following covid19 safety protocols. Individual fines range from 25 to 500. Businesses face penalties from 250 to 10,000. The county says enforcement efforts will focus on businesses. Law enforcement officers, firefighters and park rangers are among those who can issue a fine.
