Operators, linda do, also owner of blossom nail spa in san jose and campbell, linda, thank you for joining us. Thank you for having me today. Which spa are you at . Which salon is yours . Im in the san jose location today. It looks great. Ill ask you for a tour in a few minutes but first, are you happy with todays announcement allowing you to take some of your Services Outdoors . Its a definite consideration, a step moving forward to help salons wanting to reopen. Tell me about what are some of the main rules that would apply to your manicurists . At the salon, the top priority is always the health and safety and of course, the quality that we provide to our customers. The healthy standards are still the same indoors and what they apply outdoor. Sure. I mean what Governor Newsom issued in terms of the guidelines. Im looking through a few of them. Single use applicators must be used and disposed immediately and things in regard to not putting nail polish on peoples nails in terms of a tester, like the palette. Those are specifics. Can you run through what some of them are in order to operate outdoors . So basically, nail polishes are not allowed to be touched by the client. We do have swatches and they can choose colors from there. Okay. What are some other specific rules . Temperature checks, sanitation, hand washing, they have to wear facial mask. Our employees have to always, when providing service to our clients, they always have to wear a face mask, face shield and gloves. Okay, and also pedicures done outside limited to portable tubs and bowls and must be disinfected with a specific disinfectant. Are those doable or realistic or not . I think they are doable, but then again, i have to talk to my team and really figure out the logistics of how were going to do all of this, because weather is an issue, the heat is an issue, quality. Because were trained to do indoors and this is something new, so we just have to really, a lot of new training and learning this new way of doing business now. I know at your salon, just looking behind you, you have one of those chairs, i think they massage you while youre seated there. Those are not things you can just take outside, are they . No, we cant because theres plumbing and draining, all that. So that definitely cant go outside. But what about the drying of your nail polish, right . I understand theres some rules in regard to heat. Anything equipment that gives off heat, that may not be allowed . Linda, can you hear me . Are you there . Uhoh. We may have lost audio connection. Linda, can you still hear me . Live tv here. Sounds like linda may not be able to hear me at the moment, so were going to work on that. In the meantime, i will just let you know that this is an exception that the governor granted to the hair and barbershop industry as well as nail salon industry to try to give them a chance to open. A lot of people are saying, well, youre letting restaurants open outdoors but not these services . They cant operate indoors, so they need to shut down . After a lot of lobbying and a lot of advocacy, so he did make this exception. Theres stringent rules though in regard to what they have to do when they operate outside. Let me know if we have linda back. In the meantime, i should just let you know that as soon as we get her back, well take you on a tour because some of these nail salon operators say weve spent so much money, not made any money, but spent so much money to make these facility upgrades and now youre saying you cant operate indoors again, even though you spent tens of thousands making these upgrades and now you can only stay in business, perform your services if you can do them outside, and i wanted to explore with linda, can they even do that as well outside, given how much money they spent to beef up the inside, whether its the plexiglas to separate her manicurist and the customer and all the other disinfecting stations that shes set up, right, the checkin area to space people out, make sure theres no magazines there to limit the amount of touch and im told we have linda back on. Lets bring you back, linda, thank you for joining us. I hope you can hear me okay now. We do see you. And were still working on your audio but do you want to take us for a tour of your salon and show us the improvements youve made to the facilities that i know you told me you spent thousands of dollars doing to keep customers safe. Show us. Sure, well start from the outside coming in if you were a customer. Give me a second. So youre good. So outside, of course, we have to have all the regulations and social distancing protocols posted outside. And these are appointments only contact number. What we need to do before you come in, facial masks required, Temperature Checks. Washing hands, gloves provided if needed and social distancing throughout the salon. Once entered, we have a kiosk Temperature Check for you here. To take the temperature and then we have a station here for hand sanitati sanitation, masks, disposable masks here. Once you go in, lets check out your waiting area. So we dont have a waiting area. Everything has to be social six feet apart. We specifically made our salon so its social distanced throughout. All the chairs right here, you can see, are six feet apart. And we have plastic barriers for the customer, so they can sit and do their pedicure here. What about your nail boards, things like that . Are you using all disposables, the ones you used with peoples nails, which things are now, equipmentwise, now disposable only . Anything disposable like paper files, sanding, anything disposable we use and dispose after, one time use. So any too mals we cannot dispo of, we have two machines, so we sanitize, we clean with soap, disinfect and then we sanitize with our auto clean machines we have here. Can i ask you, how many days were you actually open before you had to shut down again . Our reopening date was the 15th. So on the 13th is when we got notice because we were expanding our san jose location next door. So we never got a chance. You spent all this money and you never even had a chance to welcome in customers. No. So what are your plans now . Now that the governor says, okay, you can do it if you can do it in this way and outdoors. Do you have the space . Can you take it right outside . Do you have a sidewalk, a patio . That, i would have to negotiate and talk to my landlord for approval. So its something we definitely can consider but we would have to lay everything out with the landlord. All right, so given all that, how long do you think it might be before you can actually start running your business again and honestly, are you going to have to furlough everybody and make it work . Great questions. I really dont know. I have a lot of customers asking me what im going to do. Are we going to do outside nails . Safety is our number one priority and the quality of our work is important, so i have to take into consideration of all those to actually make this happen. Linda, i know it has not been easy. Certainly, you know, from all that youve had to cope with and adapt to and also financially, hang in there. Certainly hope youll be in business soon outside. Im getting a lot of comments on facebook from people saying your salon looks awesome. So hopefully, well get a chance to visit it soon. Take care. Thank you so much. All right. Nail salons making do. As you know, right now, the governor has given them the go ahead if they can do it outside, so that means more adapting and well see how well linda does with that. Maybe your kid was looking forward to their High School Sports season. Maybe its football or volleyball or basketball, but what will happen to their season now given that states struggle against covid19 . This morning, the California Scholastic Federation against High School Sports released its revised cal dendar for the Upcoming School year. Joining us to talk about the dramatic changes, the risk factors for different sports and much more is steve, president of the central cosection in Monterey County, correct me if im wrong, and the high school in san mateo. Welcome, steve. Thank you very much. Happy to be here. So lets get right to it. The cif calendar hot off the press this year. Looks like no football homecoming game this l ffall. Walk us through the different sports and where they land with this new calendar, steve. So this is what came out from the cif, and this is clarification from the playoff calendar and so when the state says these are where our playoffs will be held, as you look, youll see that they essentially shifted the fall sports into december and january into winter and moved a lot of what would be winter and spring. So football, competitive cheer, girls volleyball, Cross Country, water polo all move from fall to winter, right . Yeah. Took girls fall to the spring when the boys play golf and tennis. Lets run through the rest of the panels. We have some more sports to show you. Basketball, soccer, wrestling were Winter Sports and now early spring . Yeah. Well, theres not really, just kind of two seasons. You have kind of a late winter and into the spring and yeah, soccer is an interesting one. Im sure they wrestle, no pun intended, whether to put that with what are typically the fall sports, down in the spring and basketball, i think, was a relative, i think that was relatively late decision as volleyball was going to be a gym sport that plays in what i call now the winter, and moving basketball to spring made sense. In addition to the fact basketball is a little more risky. You came up with a risk factor rankings which well look at in the next segment. So no sport is just cancelled at this point, right . No, there hasnt been a sports cancellation. Cif just moved the dates they could start and leaves the fall wide open. Im sure well touch on this a little bit later. But there probably will be parts of the state competing in something in the fall. All right. Well, well see. This is, of course, all assuming its safe to play in those particular areas but do you think the seasons will all be shorter like fewer games, for example . Yes, yes. And well look at the playoff calendar tomorrow. There will be fewer rounds. I surmise, of playoffs. There will be, i think the state playoffs will be shorter. I would imagine you look at anywhere from a 20 to 25 reduction in the number of contests and youre going to have fewer days to prepare for the season. Youll have to be, kids have to get ready quickly. There are other changes that came with todays rules that they announced. Can you talk about some of those . I was getting emails from friends, as if i would know. Like my kid plays baseball at the same time and a volleyball friend, how will this work with the School Season . Normally you cant play both at the same time. Whats going to happen now . Ill address the first one. Rule 600 is a rule that basically states that when youre involved, you cannot play at the same time your club sport with your high school sport. Typically that impacts soccer and other sports but its been soccer, in fact, because theyve had to move sports around. They have suspended rule 600 for this season. And the cifs section could put it back in if they want but i do not anticipate that happening and its just, i think, a way to reduce the amount of stress you put on kids, so it provides some flexibility. Cannot play two sports in the same season and that has been suggested and were going to propose it. Our league meting to suspend that rule as well and that is not a state rule but a league rule. Some smaller schools out there that have very few athletes in the school. Theyll have to go from the field to shot put and high put and run back. I think that will, if you look at this list of sports, some kids who typically do not have to choose, for instance, between softball and basketball, hopefully get them a chance to do both of those if its possible and safe. Are you reading these Facebook Comments as youre talking to me because i just got a question about softball and basketball. Well take this conversation to our live stream platforms and be on air to talk about what it means for college well as to how a have reverse mortgage works. People think that the bank takes your home, but that is not true. Thats absolutely 100 wrong. The home is ours. We can sell it if we want to at any time. I like the flexibility of not having a payment, but i can make the payment if i want to. Youre responsible for keeping up your property taxes and youre responsible for paying your insurance on the property. For us, it was a security blanket. The value of our house, was to fund our longterm health care. For years, reverse Mortgage Funding has been helping customers like these use the equity from their homes to finance their lives. They know the importance of having financial security. Make an appointment so they can tell you how it works. Its a good thing. Access your equity. Stay in your home. Have peace of mind. We are back with a president of the central cosection and athletic director. Talk about todays official shake shakeup, football and volleyball will not happen until december at the earliest. Pushed back as well until spring. That if its safe to play. Youve taken all the sports at your high school and rank them in terms of risk, so walk me through the sports, least riskiest. If you look at it, came out with a list of rankings. Three factors. The ability to social distance, the ability to reduce droplets and the ability to reduce surface transfer. You look at the first grouping and Cross Country and golf, tennis. Those are safe. And those are played in the community. Those are open right now. As you move down the list with baseball and softball. It starts to be a little bit more risk and mitigate the risk. Those are full Contact Sports and people are close, so just trying to get Decision Makers locally align the season. Given what you just showed us, a couple of questions, do you think its possible that some of these sports will get play played, more playable, less risky . We didnt know which way the virus is going. Whether you could change some of the rules to make them less contactish, less risky. Cross country, kids running in packs, and say, sequence Andrew Dymburt swimming could be altered a bit, this terms of how you make the lane assignments. To make sure they dont cheat and very small adjustment for the kids on their own team playing the same foursome. The usda guidelines, that could be singles. Thats no risk in droplets. Fine line between making adjustments to schools and sports without changing the complete nature. Thats true. What about smaller rosters . Is that a possibility . Yeah, thats a definite possibility. Very logistical and look at the swim team in the santa clara valley. They stopped at the idea of swimming in the fall because if you talk about four and varsity, get up to 48 kids. We have the kids on the roster, so all of these scenarios, whether its roster size, transportati transportation, modification, if you see the seasons arent even changed. So got to be really open to some kind of changes so the kids get some type of athletic experience. I know how important you think athletic experiences are to teens development so well try to make it happen if it can be done safely. Remind us again tomorrow, ccs, governors the area from San Mateo County to Monterey County essentially. Are you going to decide your calendar for the school year recommendations or could it look a little different . I havent heard anything to indicate that were going to be different from the cif. But its a big section, ill talk with all the people and the executive committees, be the ones voting. Well, steve, thats all the time we have on air. Teaches me something about asking such long back, thank you so much for joining us for our interactive show, getting answers.
