Shark tanks kevin oleary does the math on what families can do now that the college equation has changed. Plus, Alfonso Ribeiro and americas funniest home quarantine videos. An allnew tamron hall starts now. [upbeat music] welcome to the tamron hall show from my home. So we have been talking to people from all over this country, really getting a glimpse into their daytoday life, and ill tell you one thing if you really want to have an indepth conversation with layers, talk to anyone who has a child graduating from high school on their way to college or are already in college, in some cases about to graduate, and how this pandemic, how this crisis is affecting them. Its absolutely incredible because the uncertainty only, of course, adds to the anxiety of it. My girlfriend has three kids. One of them just got accepted to morehouse college. Normally, you know, wed be throwing confetti. It would be one of the most amazing days in his life, but its filled with, will my university actually open in the fall . Will i attend Classes Online . Im telling you, these conversations are going on, and they are hours long. I have participated in a couple of virtual graduations. I have had to do retakes, come to tears because i dont know what to say to these kids. How do you inspire them . How do you tell someone, you dont have any money, and the money that was being put in the pot that your parents came up with, thats going to be used now for their daytoday lives . How do you find inspiration in that . How do you tell someone to keep going . So for the kids who should be headed off to college in the fall, there are a lot of questions that need to be answered. Uncertainty over the fate of the fall semester has millions of students, parents and colleges hanging in the balance, trying to figure out if campuses will be open or closed. Faced with the possibility of more virtual classes in the future, some students are questioning if thats a valid alternative to sitting in a classroom. Is it worth it for me to go to college . Because, you know, theyre charging, like, thousands upon thousands of dollars, and im not getting even half the experience. Its really unappealing to me, the idea of paying for college and doing all of that schoolwork when im not able to connect facetoface with the people that are teaching me and the people that im working with. One in six students are now considering delaying college by taking a gap year to work or volunteer in the fall. Georgetown and uc berkeley are probably tied up at the tom, and im still trying to figure out between those two schools, and then taking a gap year is just right below it. Many parents whove been affected by the economic crisis are secondguessing hefty tuition fees, and now theres a messy dispute brewing over whether students deserve refunds or discounts. Some are actually suing to get their money back. Universities are turning to the government for support. The American Council on education and 40 other Higher Education organizations is asking congress to provide nearly 50 billion in emergency aid. As schools, students and parents grapple with the unsettling economic outlook, safety remains a priority. We would love to have a senior year, but we do worry about what health risks that would pose, not only to older people in the community but to other students like us as well. See, i told you. So much to talk about here, and parents are going from worry to scared to furious, and i wanted someone who could give us some straightforward advice around this collegecoed crisis, so we called on shark tanks kevin oleary. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different outcome. But they already told you theyre insane. Theres no growth. Youre handmaking bars and doing 21,000. Though thats just the soap. Okay, look, i we also do wholesale. I tried to be optimistic. There is nothing here for an investor, and also your parents must be asking when youre going to wake up and get jobs. Kevin oleary joins us from his home in miami, florida. Kevin, listen. Ive given a couple of these virtual graduations. I have to do multiple takes because i start crying. I just struggle to offer advice or inspiration knowing that these kids are looking debt, and even if you have the money, your school may not be open. We just heard california has announced that all state universities will be holding fall Classes Online. So what does that mean, do you think, for families . It means a different experience in education. You have to ask yourself, if youre 18, 19, 20 years old, you know, looking at posthighschool education now, why are you doing it . What is the reason you pursue college in the first place . And i say its time for some real soulsearching because one aspect of education that has really been downplayed for decades now that should be looked at anew are trade schools because theres many professions that they dont teach in colleges that are very lucrative for careers. You know, everybody looked down on plumbers or electricians or construction jobs or factory workers that are now heavily revolving around technology. These are all good careers that arent taught necessarily in a college. Its more trade school, and i think thats kind of a decision that some people should consider because the outcome financially is going to be much better. I think that sounds good again in theory, but come fall, some of those trade schools will not be open. Some of that onthejob training that were hoping for, those jobs will go to the 30 Million People who are unemployed and may have more on their resume, so how do you what youre advising, how do you turn that into a real conversation for someone right now in the fall . Well, lets talk about a job on a factory floor managing robotics, for example. You have to train for that. You have to learn how the systems work. Maybe that course is 12 months. The minute you graduate for that, you are eligible to work on a Factory Assembly line which is probably going to be a place where you will definitely be socially distanced, but you can get that job because you were trained for it. Meanwhile, someone else is sitting in a 4year College Course in their basement for the next 24 months at least not meeting anybody except their parents. You really have to start thinking this through. Is that a great benefit, or should you train for something that you can immediately start to bring income for . And i say all im saying is, look. Im not telling you not to go to college. Im just telling you that experience wont be as valuable as it was to me when i could connect with people. I dont remember a single thing about any of those classes. Thats not why im successful or a failure today. Its because of the people i met, and that is the primary benefit of a college, for the thousands of people and then the 60 or 80 in your class and those very tight relationships that are formed with other people pursuing careers that you will not get in this new world, and that, i think, makes everybody should do a reset on their thinking about spending 60,000 to 80,000. Lets talk about the people whove paid tuition for a second semester, people who may have put down payments down on, you know, apartments for their kids or even money down for the books. The money has started to pour into the college pot. There are lawsuits right now. What are your thoughts on that . Theres a tremendous amount of money disputes around education right now, and i think at the end of the day you could argue, as someone whos paid the tuition for, lets say, youre going into your third year
