He stood shoulder to shoulder with the legendary dr. Martin luther king jr. In the 60s and continued to fight for equality on capitol hill. A look back at lewiss iconic life. Reporter john lewis was born outside troy, alabama, in 1940. The son of share croppers. As a teenager he was drawn to activism surrounding the montgomery bus boycott. In the 1960s he was at the center of nearly every major mole in the Civil Rights Movement. Organizing sitin demonstrations at segregated lunch counters, he was one of the first freedom riders. This shows him with a bandage on his head after he and other riders were beaten, just the beginning of what would be many arrests for the civil rights activist. We must all cry together. We want our freedom and we want it now. By 1963 at the age of just 23, he was dubbed one of the big six leaders of the Civil Rights Movement who helped plan the historic march on washington. Let us not forget that we are involved in a social revolution. Reporter he helped spearhead one of the most defining moments of the era, leading more than 600 Peaceful Protesters across the bridge in selma, alabama in 1965. It was known as muddy sunday. He was struck in the head, suffering a fractured skull at the hands of the police. I was the first one to catch the blow. Reporter lewis was elected to congress in 1986. He served as u. S. Representative of georgias fifth Congressional District where he continued to get into what he called good trouble. I got arrested 40 times in the 60s. Since ive been in congress, another five times. Reporter he was awarded the congressional medal of freedom, the highest civilian honor. In reason years he was an outspoken person against president trump. Because for the first time, all the things that he stood for was beginning to make sense to everybody in the world. Lewis visited San Francisco many times over the years, often to support charities. Schools must conduct daily temperature checks and school staff will be tested on a rotating basis.
