At a Campaign Stop in pennsylvania, biden said hes eager to debate trump, and he challenged the president on trumps signature issue, the economy. His failures come with a terrible human cost and deep economic toll. Time and again working families are paying the price for this administrations incompetence. And the Biden Campaign is putting more focus on iowa adding a senior team in the state where trump won handily in 2016. Back to coronavirus and the World Health Organization now acknowledging the virus may linger in the air and crowded indoor spaces. Earlier i spoke with dr. Yvonne maldonado. I asked her about what people should know as amusement parks start to reopen but we started with that new headline from the w. H. O. Dr. Maldonado, lets start with new announcements from the World Health Organization. It now concedes that the coronavirus can linger in the air in indoor spaces and it has stated more directly it can be spread by people who dont have symptoms. Some critics say these statements dont go far enough. What is the guidance youre hearing . I think most of us know those facts are true, and we all know that the most important route is still respiratory transmission from droplets. Those other mechanicisms are important, but respiratory droplets are the most important. Masking, hand hygiene and social distancing are really the answer here. Dr. Anthony fauci says states seeing a resurgence should consider pausing their reopening, and he says, quote, were just not great compared to other countries. What do you think should be done to battle this surge . I think we need to be patient we need to follow the rules that each of our counties and states lay out for us because this is going to take us a while and i think we need to stay patient until this transmission drops. Speaking of other countries startling numbers compared to other parts of the world. 61,000 new coronavirus cases in 24 hours in the u. S. , but weve reported in that same 24 hour period the uk, 642 case, italy, 214. Why is this the case . I think we were very careful for awhile, and people got tired, started opening up and wemasks, so i think theres just more transmission what would you tell people going toeas, ement parks . To make sure you have hand hygiene gel, and if you use public bathrooms, be careful about wiping surfaces before you go in and after you leave. Our thanks to dr. Maldonado there. Breaking news is in the east bay where a brush fire that shut down a portion of interstate 580 over the Altamont Pass at one point flames jumped across the freeway. Amy hollyfield is live near the scene with what is going on. Reporter good morning. I have good news to show you. The freeway is moving. Traffic doing just fine. Lanes have reopened. So the commute should be okay for those of you who do have to get into work. I want to show you know what they were dealing with earlier. Look at the flames here on the Altamont Pass. We are out here on interstate 580 and traffic was impacted in both directions. They had to shut down lanes in both directions as the fire appeared to be burning in between the lanes. And then at one point did jump the freeway. And hit the other side of the freeway. So really impacted traffic, we saw quite a backup. And take a look at the second clip of video we have, you see the charred hillside or the gra grass, an idea of how much burned. And it is windy so they were having to deal with the wind pushing the fire. Good reminder just how hot and dry it is out here. But they have managed to get the fire out and we were just on the freeway moments ago and caltrans was out there picking up the cones and telling us that they were opening back up. So they have put the fire out, they have diverted the emergency for right now. So traffic is okay and the fire is out. From the Altamont Pass, amy hollyfield, abc 7 news. And joe bee in a in a in a a does it mean for the people making their way through the area now . Yeah, kumasi, thank you, i want to pull up the map so people can see impacted area. All eastbound lanes are wide open. There is a portion of lanes blocked in the westbound direction. The gre green line is trafficking eastbound and that is wide open. So this will impact the commuters coming out of tracy. But once you make your way into livermore, you will have smooth sailing from there, so no problems as far as that slowdown. So just that patch that you see on the screen and once you make it through that, you will be in great shape. I know mike is tracking how the winds and the weather in that area is affecting firefighters this morning. Yeah, there is quite a wind farm out there and there is a reason why there is so many Wind Turbines out there because it is always windy out there. So kudos to the firefighters for getting it under control quickly because the winds continue to gust 26 to 34 Miles Per Hour through the Altamont Pass. Plus the temperatures are warm in the mid70s. And relative humidity only about 30 . As we head throughout the rest of the day, if it is smoldering and it may reignite, hopefully that is not the case, you can see sustained winds will cool down just a little built or calm down i should say but then ramp up again this afternoon addrend early evening hours. And you can sfo. Attill aveo. Re breeze, but b in the mid70s to mid80s. And a little bit warmer inland with a lot of 90s. And this is just the beginning what is dg to is going to be a weekend. Back to jobina. Thank you, mike. Two
