Firefighters had their hands full last night due to illegal fireworks, from fires to one crew even having Bottle Rockets shot at its truck as it responded to a call. Im j. R. Stone. Eric thomas has the night off. Im dion lim. Its been no Holiday Weekend for bay area firefighters. They have been racing to keep up with the hundreds of fires in our region, mostly started by illegal fireworks. Abc7 News Reporter Cornell Barnard joins us live in san pablo with more on this story. Cornell . Dion, very scary night for firefighters no, professional Fireworks Shows in the bay area last night, but lots of amateur ones, just ask any firefighter. Many started firesis o in san pablo. The firework debris is just feet away. Fireworks lit up the skies over San Francisco on july 4th, but its a show firefighters didnt want to see. Illegal fireworks caused large grass fires like this one near hunters point, and this fire less than a mile away. We were virtually working nonstop. We were going from one fire to another fire. Lieutenant Jonathan Baxter says his department responded to 108 fires, all started by fireworks. At one point fire crews came under attack from a barrage of fireworks being launched. I have a Bottle Rocket shot at my car, m 80s. Two kids were injured saturday after they got too close to fireworks. In oakland, neighbors were helping clean up lakeshore avenue where lots of debris from fireworks was left behind. After a big, loud show in the sky. It was the best Fireworks Show of my life, and i wanted to come out here and help clean up. Overwhelming, completely. But others thought it would never end. The entire neighborhood has to put up for seven hours unsanctioned fireworks. In contra costa county, crews responded to more than 60 fires, like this one near pittsburg, most started by fireworks. At one point two dozen homes were threatened, but firefighters say not a single one was lost. Significant amount of illegal fireworks activity, almost to the point where the noise was continuous. Each one of those is a potential ignition. Firefighters say theres a reason fireworks are illegal in most part of the bay area because they start fires. We have been hearing loud pops and booms from fireworks even today. Firefighters expect to be very busy once again tonight. Live in san pablo, Cornell Barnard. Homeowners in san jose say fireworks caused damage to their home and set a nearby palm tree on fire. The Fire Department says fireworks are blamed for a total of 23 fires, including two building fires. Youre looking at a time lapse video of the illegal fireworks now. The city received nearly 6,300 complaints and issued five citations. Investigators are working today to determine if fireworks sparked a wildfire thats burning in the south bay and is now almost double the size that it was said to be only a matter of hours ago. Air quality advisory is in effect through tomorrow for areas including morgan hill, gilroy, and san martin. Thats due to the socalled park fire burning in the Anderson Lake area. 80 People Living near the fire were evacuated from their homes. Many of them are now at live oak high school. We just lenders more evacuations are now under way on canada road. The fire is now 50 contained and fire crews say they are keeping close track on the winds. The northwest wind, we have concern that the fire may head to the south. So we were trying to get around that this morning with some of our bulldozers and hand crews to hopefully box that in. The fires started around 11 00 last night and has burned 600 acres. Also right now firefighters are battling a fire burning outside of gilroy thats rapidly exploded in size. The blaze is at least 600 acres, mandatory auctions are in place in the area of oaks spring circle. Fire crews are evacuating homes on canada road. Cal fire says two structures have burned and others are threatened. Fires started around 2 30 this afternoon. I want to start with live doppler 7 right now because it is picking up on that large smoke plume, this coming from the cruz fire. You see the smoke coming off that large fire right now. Its blowing away from much of the bay area, but we do have that air quality advisory in effect for areas like morgan hill and gilroy through tomorrow because these nearby fires putting smoke into the atmosphere. It is impact ing a air quality. Right now the air quality is moderate in much of the region but does fluctuate into unhealthy for sensitive groups at times. Be aware of that. We have to remember much of the bay area is under a severe drought category. Our vegetation is very parched and its going to stay that way for the next three or four months, so be vigilant with all these small brush fires we are tracking. Marin county is putting the brakes on Indoor Dining because of worsening covid19 numbers. The restriction will be in place for at least three weeks and goes into effect at 11 59 tonight. Marin gave the order june 29th, but several days later it found itself on the states watch list for infection hot spots. Part of that has to do with the outbreak at san quentin. School will definitely look different when students return to the classroom in palo alto. The districts plan was officially approved on friday by the palo alto board of education. Elementary students will primarily be taught in person while middle schools and high schools will have their students staying at home. There will be options, however, for Small Group Activities on campus. School start times could be changing at a later date as well. Parents of students in Elementary School are also going to be asked if they want their children to learn remotely or in person.
