We loved him in movies like while you were sleeping, american beauty, and tv shows like the oc and grace and frankie. Now hes showing off his singing and dancing chops on the new nbc show zoeys extraordinary playlist. Take a look. Its your thing do what you want to do i cant tell you who to sock it to its your thing do what you want to do Peter Gallagher joins us in cyber hall from his home in los angeles. Peter, i have to start with something you shared with my producer. You believe your entire family got coronavirus . What happened . Except for our daughter. Theres no way we can be sure. Our dauger wangn oaay in jagged little pill, her costar tested positive for it. And her her other fellow she gets quite intimate with was tested positive for it. She lost her sense of smell, and our son was exposed. And i got very sick at the end of up in vancouver, where we were shooting zoeys, i was so careful, too. Everybody was dropping like flies. I was washing my hands, doing all this back in january. But i got a real chest thing going on. My wife got the terrible, terrible headaches. With any luck, we may have gotten through it, but we are behaving as if we never had it and we are taking all the precautions, because the crazy thing about this is nobody knows anything. Peter, i was so fascinated to learn that your mother helped develop penicillin. Here we are at this time where people are questioning science, and not knowing if they should rely on it. What is your perspective, is it frustrating, especially being raised by a scientist . Well, you know, its funny. Yes, my mother was involved in developing penicillin. They developed the romansky method, which saved a lot of lives during the second world war. My dad they made the discovery on dday and my dad was waiting to land on the beach in france. To see science so easily ignored or cast aside in favor of instinct, i cant imagine what my mom and dad would think of right now, after they had it cost them and their families so much. You are hunkered down with your wife. Youve been married what, how many years has it been . Years. Next week. 37ea ia ek. 37 years next week. What have you learned about each other in this quarantine, shelterinplace time that we are in . I learned, first of all, that i love my wife more now than i ever have. And that i am really glad that we have all this practice that a lot of couples dont have. I worry about other couples. This is like being out of work. Fortunately, i havent been out of work much. But we have some practice being at home with each other when the rest of the world was at work doing things. We are kind of a good team. The tough thing is, our kids are on the other side of the country, so we miss them terribly. But i think they are probably okay without us. I think so. Thats the thing, even about your show, your character not being able to communicate. And then through this think about it, you talk about they are able to connect. Your mother in world war ii, the technology we have now, the ability to stay in contact with our family and friends, what would we have done years ago . 20 years ago . The show really taps into what connection means. What does it mean, to have that family . That family bond . Its what drew me to the show, and what i found so powerful about it. For me, the most fun you can have is when the story youre telling has a place in the world that you live in. What really drew me to the story is in this crazy, divided time, when we are encouraged to see the worst in each other and condemn others, suspect problems with the guy down the street, and so on, and we are so divided, this is a show that its all about connection. Its all about the things that connect us. All the things that we share. Not just the hit songs, but they do we do share them, they reside in us. They excite all the same feelings, no matter who you are or where youre from. If you are short, tall, whatever it is. So, that really, really was powerful for me. Before i let you go, you mentioned your daughter is performing on broadway, jagged little pill. Your history in music and theater, its a part of our lives. Concerts, all of those things. How do you see us moving forward, especially in theater . The crazy thing is, the theater our daughter is doing jagged little pill in is the same one i did long days journey into night in, years and years before. I just dont imagine that the theater is going to be able to come back until everybody feels safe. You know . But when everybody feels safe, they are going to come roaring back. Peter, thank you so much for joining us. I love the show, and well see you soon. Thank you. The Season Finale of zoeys extraordinary playlist airs sunday, may 3rd, on nbc.
