Positivity rate. Yesterday we were at 5. 1. We went from a yellow to what were now what i think of as a high orange. If that continues over the next couple days, we could be in a red, in our red zone. It would be the most concerning zone. Live in San Francisco, lyane, said the numbers looked good. What changed in the last 24 hours . Reporter Health Officials say what changed was that dramatic increase. The change in the numbers. They are very concerned. They say these numbers can multiple very quickly. We were as surprised as you are when we heard the mayor say, lets pause. It was made to honor 99 workers at San Francisco general hospital. Our plans to businesses and places that we have committed to, those plans will be put on pause. Reporter but listen to how only yesterday mayor breed was painting a positive picture in San Francisco, praising people for wearing masks. It is why we are seeing lower numbers here in San Francisco for the number of cases, and as we see, the numbers increase in california, we still see San Francisco doing okay. Reporter so what happened in the past 24 hours to change her minds . What changed overnight . Well, what changed overnight sadly is we got 100 new cases. When you look at the data, there has never been a time when weve seen that level of a surge since march. Reporter according to the health department, the city record 103 new cases yesterday. More concerning is the rate of new cases. It has nearly doubled since june 14. Right now we are in a very steep curve. It is not flat like it was a few weeks ago. Reporter the mayor said it is guided by science. Businesses like the zoo, hair and nail salons and bars for Outdoor Service were scheduled to reopen this coming monday. But will have to weigait. We were looking at the bay area in toll and it was hard to separate between parties and gatherings, the outbreak at the prison, nursing homes, now were looking specifically at sfrap. Before we open up more businesses and potentially allow more people to risk person to person transmission, we need to see where it is coming from. It seems drastic because it is preventive. Youve seen it in florida and texas. New york which has done a great job has just gone to phase ii. It will be interesting to see if they end up in the same boat we are here. Look at the crystal ball a few weeks, a couple months down the road. Are you concerned well be back in a situation where we may have to shut things down more radically again . Im concerned that is a possible. We now know it is a very real possibility. A couple months ago, people were not sure, what will summer look like . Will the virus slow down . Is the reproduction going to be affected by the warm weather . None of that is true. It is rampant. We have 35ish states where cases ae going up. We know it is a very real possible. If we are not vigilant and were working together, it can come back. I feel for the businesses right now. It is hurting the economy and mental health. I think it is incouple bent upon us. Hold someone accountable. If you see someone not wearing a mask, thats like drunk driving. Or wearing a lifejacket. We need to protect our community. Well, thats a good point. We have a few seconds left. Up like so many other circumstances, in many, many respects, and you allude to this, we have the power individually to make a big difference communally. We really do. And i understand that people are frustrated with the decisions theyre hearing. While we wait for our officials to figure out what to do, people need to remember. There are certain things were in control of and last note, if you get a notification from a contact tracer, please try your best to listen to those recommendations.
