Lets break it all down. More than 5,000 cases reported on monday. Jumping to more than 7100 on tuesday. Dipping on 5,300 on wednesday. But what exactly is causing the increase . Yes, the cases have gone way up. But a lot of those are outbreaks and some of it is just more fish case finding. Reporter this is the you were csf lead epidemiologist dr. George rutherford. More testing, more reopening, memorial day gatherings and protest crowds. Abc7 news special corn dr. Patel is joining us live. Always great to have you. Lets start with testing. Are we seeing more cases just because theres more testing going on at this point . Were definitely seeing more cases. Thats not the sole reason. Obviously, if we have more access to testing, more people can test positive. We can also pick up more asymptomatic or pre symptomatic cases. They increase the rates of the hospitalizations. So the surge is likely not just testing. It is also community spread. The fact the virus is still out there and people are still spreading it. Okay. Lets talk about the community spread. We started a shelter in place ten 1 days ago. The rules have been relaxing. Weve seen more and more people outside. Weve seen more about the businesses reopening. Is reopening leading to more cases . It is definitely a risk and were all thinking about it. It is hard to pin it down. As weve seen different counties across california are reopening at different rates. I think part of it, you mentioned 101 days. I was in the studio yesterday and that was the beginning of the year. People are having quarantine fatigue. Contact tracers have placed a lot of outbreaks to birthday parties and graduation parties, gatherings. Were seeing a combination of both. People being a little more relaxed in the safety guidelines and all businesses reopening which makes me nervous about all the business you mention that had are about to reopen. Yeah. Absolutely. Come monday. People were already feeling the fatigue of sheltering in place a month ago. We saw it would cause the spike in cases with memorial day. Was that one of the lpts so that was associated with the spike in cases. The spike were seeing now is more associated to the past week or so. Again, like i mentioned. Contact tracers, even back then, two weeks ago, were pinning outbreaks to barbecues, gatherings, around the time of graduation parties. People headed to beaches. A lot of californians were tired of it. It was about the National Message slowing down and business reopening. Some have a false sense of home and they may think were out of the woods right now. We can get more relaxed about things but thats nothecase. E y were testing positive which might be the same crowd who is going out to those gatherings, those barbecues and maybe to the nail salons and outdoor barbecues pretty soon. Yeah. And not just all fun. Were seeing a lot of social movements. George noticed was killed on memorial day and it led to massive protests across the country. We saw it here in the bay area. We saw lots of people in the streets. Some with masks, some not. They were all gathered so closely together. A lot of people will say, well, the protests. Thats what caused this huge spike. How did that play into it . As of right now, we dont have evidence that the protest caused a huge spike were seeing. It is still early and there is an incubation period. Also, there was early data and modeling showing during the protest, more people were staying home because of the curfew and mandates. That may have augmented some of what the risk was with a lot of people beingogether a people outdoors. Were not seeing the link that some people were afraid of. We really do stand by the Public Health cause of the protests. So im glad that we got both messages out there. To fight the pandemic and to fight systemic racism. All right. Sounds good. For eight years now, fast track has been sending toll invoices out to those who cross the Golden Gate Bridge that dont have a fast track tran responder. Then you pay the toll. Why cannot they invoice just like on the Golden Gate Bridge . Why do they have to call it a violation . Its insulting. It does have a lot of fine print and keeps calling it a violation. Please include your violation number on your check. Donal send cash. It seems kind of harsh. They just wanted to pay the toll. It says is this your first violation . They contacted 7 on your side. We found out why fast track is semiing toll evasion notices instead of ordinary notices. Basically, this is the only stationary fast track had on hand. Them they werent expecting a pandemic and werent ready to send toll invoices for all state owned bridges. So they used the only forms they had. Toll evasion notices. It is a little confusing. However, fast track does tuck this little card in the envelope. A disclaimer assess this is not a violation. It is a bill for your toll. Im still mad that they called it a violation. You took my picture as i was going through. I didnt evade the toll. Shes a real criminal. A toll evasion. She might need a good lawyer. So if you get one of these, understand it is not a violation however you have to pay. Theyre going to add on fees. Well keep up with it and let you know. Okay. Thank you.
