More than 6,000 infections reported yesterday. That is the largest single day count in the state since the pandemic hit. Santa clara county is part of that reporting today, one of of the large ft increases in a county board of supervisors meeting, they had a warning about the uptick. We said before, covid19 is like a wild fire, if you tape it when its small, you can keep it under control. But once covid transmission is accelerating, its very, very difficult to contain and slow down. And i think thats what we are seeing in many parts of the country. Dr. Coty said its too early to tell what is behind the increase. With covid19 cases on the rise, hospitals across the bay area are preparing for another wave of patients in the er and the icu, abc7 News Reporter went to stan ford to learn how medical providers are getting ready. At the start of the covid19 pandemic. There was little Reliable Research and no standardized guidelines to follow for treatment. That entire month of march seems to have just melded in to one day. One really, really long day. As some of the first patients arrived in the icu at stanford hospital, concerns grew over how to keep people safe. It was scary for people who were working and even our Health Care Providers who got it, realized that i could take something potentially deadly home to my family. That was then, and this is now. We know if we wear the right things and exercise appropriate precautions that we can protect ourselves. Armed with more data and new knowledge they say they are ready for another potential wave. We have established how to do the ventilator. When is it safe to extubate them. Change can be uncomfortable. And there was a lot of it in the beginning. Now they have a playbook to rely on. Its a multidiscipline airy effort where you get Infection Control and emergency doctors and pulmonary doctors and nurses and respiratory doctors all together in the room the say, this is working for the patients. A deep sense of collaboration required for us all. Continue to Work Together as a whole community of the bay area, to reduce the number of people who are getting covid19 so you dont need our care. We just heard from the head of emergency medicine at stanford, talking about getting ready for the next wave, she had this to say about wearing masks. I know theres a lot of conflict related to the masks. Its not worth it. Its not worth it to test not wearing a mask. Wear a mask, and stay away from large groups and we will get through it. So how do you get people to understand the value of masking up to protect others and themselves and to keep the california economy in reopening mode. We looked at the mask dilem sglam. Reporter the more we move around in california, the more we are at risk. A striking warning was said, unless we want to see more suffering and go through another round of closures, it is critical to wear a Face Covering when you leave the house. But how do you make people wear masks and what did you do if you dont . I walked in to a restaurant here in downtown walnut creek to pick up a takeout order and the employee who was handing me a bag refused to put on a mask saying its my choice. In funerals last week, many attending did not wear Face Coverings, even inside a theater packed to capacity. We are not going to expect the police to go out and enforce that and give tickets and then what we will do . Really its about education. We checked in with Bay Area Police agencies and found there are no masks. They are asking instead for volunta voluntary compliance. The governor on friday said everyone has to wear a mask in public. I didnt know. That im not reading the news. I think its mandatory that everyone in public. You need to look at the person next to you so if they are not wearing their mask, you need to say, is that patient zero and do what you need to do to protect yourself. Protecting others is one way to motivate others or try this. Even if we are just excited about moving forward in society, and continuing to reopen, the best chance of doing that is for us to wear our Face Coverings and decrease ongoing transmissions. Abc news.
