Rayshard brooks was shot in the back after an altercation in a wendys parking lot. The Atlanta Police chief resigned and theyll decide within the next few da whether. Reporter overnight demonstrations from coast to coast after another Deadly Police shooting of a black man. Protesters shutting down the bay bridge in San Francisco and this interstate in washington, d. C. Protesters also gathering at the wendys restaurant in atlanta where a Police Officer shot Rayshard Brooks friday night. The incident all captured on police body and dash cam video which began after the officers responded to a call that brooks was allegedly asleep in his car blocking the drivethrough. Brooks flees and appears to point the stun gun at the officers while he runs away. Investigators say officer Garrett Rolfe then fired three shots at him and died at hospital. An autopsy shows he was shot twice in the brack and lists the death as homicide. An attorney for the family says holding a taser should not have led to gun fire. You cant say he ran off with a weapon that could kill somebody when you say its not deadly. Multiple tear gas grenades are out. Reporter protesters hitting the streets over the weekend setting fire to the wendys. As the Atlanta Police chief stepped down, the Police Department fired officer rolfe and suspended the other officer. This morning the Police Union Says officer rolfe was terminated without due process and without an investigation. According to the District Attorney, a decision on whether to file charges is expected by midweek, and he says murder charges are being considered. Following the facts were going to be examining and reexamining the evidence. Weve got a couple of things that we have to confirm with our state investigators, the gbi and once we confirm those things, sometime during this week, we are going to make a decision and we are going to announce it to the public. Reporter this morning, some lawmakers in congress now pushing to limit qualified immunity, which protects Police Officers from being held personally liable for actions performed in their official capacity. We have to ask ourselves as a society, do we want to have a nation where Police Officers do really awful things and cannot be held accountable through civil rights charges. Reporter but republican senator tim scott says efforts to end immunity for officers has no chance of becoming law. From the republican perspective and the president sent a signal that qualified immunity is off the table. They see that as a poison pill on our side. Reporter several states are already making changes at Police Departments. New york is repealing a statute that kept disciplinary records for officers secret. The governor is now giving a ninemonth deadline for governments across the state to come up with reforms or see their funding cut. Other states are banning officers from using chokeholds and neck restraints like the one used on george floyd before he died. President trump saying he also opposes chokeholds but not in all situations. I think the concept of chokeholds sound so innocent so perfect then you realize if its a oneonone. Now, if its a twoonone, thats different. Were talking about toughness and strength. We are talking there is a physical thing here also. But if a Police Officer is in a bad scuffle and got somebody if its a oneonone fight. That does happen. And that does happen. So you have to be careful.
