With the protests over the violent deaths of black americans, im sure many kids might be scared or upset with what theyre seeing. How can parents help these kids manage those feelings . This is an important time for an important conversation. And i think the first thing i would suggest to parents is, one is, be open about it. We need to keep our goals in mind. That this is not just about explaining events to youngsters, to our children and teens. But rather, creating the lack of a better term, a narrative. A way of understanding it. It is an opportunity for character development. For everyone. An opportunity to instill hope, a sems of efficacy, what i would call realisticment on mix. And history need not be destiny. So a lot of issues really at play here. What are some important things for parents to do when having a conversation with their children . Specifically about the protests . First i would say, your deper child, your ethnic dierro a very young child. The second is to validate their experience. Talk to them about their thoughts and feelings. And their feelings may be conflicted and quite broad. Everything from anxiety, depression, sadness, to, to, to, we want they will to know these feelings are normal. Lots of individuals are feeling this way and theyre understandable. Beyond that, look at your own emotions and how youre reacting. Arthith encountered b, the phrase i use, social referencing. Theyll look to their parents and caregivers for how they should respond. So note the message emotionally and cognitively that youre trying to share with the child as well. You talked about age. What is a good age to start having these conversations about race . Really, i mean, this is surprising. Really at any age. Obviously, you can coach with it younger children in terms of fairness. And there is some really, it is very, very Interesting Research on this. As young as 12 to 15, 18 months of age, even infants have an implicit sense of fairness. When we couch the issues in simple terms such as that. Even young children, even preschoolers, we can talk about these issues. With teenagers, obviously the conversation will be very different. More abstract. We can put in it an historic could not semi. Listen as much as it is talking. When we talk about young children, ive heard some parents talk so adoringly about how their child is color blind. They have friends of all different races. They dont realize race. Then ive heard those parents not wanting to talk about race with their child because they dont want to burst that sweet innocence their child has. Would you suggest being proactive . How do you put it . It is a conversation. For sure, youngsters have a certain color blindsness, if they havent acquired it early on, toddlers, preschoolers. It is worth noting. Theyll be perceptive of the world around they will. As they meet people who are different from them, theyll begin making these discriminations. How does this individual different from me . It could be in the color of skin, type of hair, variables looking for commonality and difference. And you can talk about that in an honest way. There are lots of differences in the world in the way individuals, maybe similar or not. But youve alluded to something which i think is very, very important. And theres research on this. One of the best ways, one of the strongest ways of decreasing bias, implicit bias, decreasing racial beliefs, is for an individual to have a friend of a different ethnic, cultural or racial background. The more diverse friendships our children have, the more egalitarian they will be as they grow. Very interesting. We can keep talking about this for a long time. There is so much to get into.
