Interested in that. Certain people i know say all lives matter. The explanation that someone gave which i think is brilliant, well, the house is on fire on this block. This house is on fire. These other houses are also not on fire. Yes, these matter, but this is the house thats on fire right now. I think that, you know, people take the words and distort them. Even the socalled prolife movement. Prolifers are happy to be pro live until the person is born. Then they drop social programs and continue to not be prolife. They call it prolife, but its really antiabortion. Then say it like that is my and as sunny points out biden and pelosi want to get rid of choke holds which sounds so in human to me. Also if youre going to barge on peoples houses, knock on the door show. Every police show ive ever seen they knock and say police and then go in. Why is it certain polistates le police go into the house without warning them. They need a National Database for tracking police misconduct. They keep sending them to one precinct and another. It remind me of the Catholic Church where a certain rogue priest is an abuser. Instead of kicking him out and sending him to jail, they send him to the next parish. These things are all systemic and need changed. Meghan, you think this is risky for democrats . Yeah. If you were to hire me to advise you to run for office, there are a few tenants of politics that have not changed. One is if youre explaining, youre losing. Theres a lot of explaining going on on this. If you mean reform, say reform. If you mean defund, say defund. People are confused. Congresswoman ilhan called for the complete dismantling of the Police Department. Its rotten to its core. I dont know what explanation you need for this. Joy, you dont like things being weaponized in politics for a term. This is giving trump a Great Campaign slogan. Again, i understand and hear loud and clear what youre saying. Ive been reading and watching for the past day. I understand theres a lot of people that say reform. Reverend al sharpton said this is confusing to people me misleading without interpretation. I saw a video of a Minneapolis City Council woman who said its a privilege for me to be able to call the Police Department if someone broke into my house and someone was trying to hurt me. Listen, you guys can spin and say everything you want. Politics at the end of the day is real simple. Its about slogans. Defund the police is a great one for the trump campaign. [ all talking ] wait, wait, wait. I got something to say. You must explain. Im going to explain to bill barr who says theres no systemic racism. Eric garner, george floyd couldnt breathe. Tamir rice was 12. If you cant look at that and say, we have an issue and we have to sit down and talk about it and figure out how to make the good cops better and get the bad cops out of the way, no one that i know wants to get rid of the Police Department. No one. Congresswoman ilhan does. No. I think she wants to reform it. It sounds better. Both sides always do they do the better word. The truth of the matter is no one wants the Police Department gone. We celebrated the Police Department during 911. We celebrated the Police Department in covid times. What were saying is, those are the great things we want the Police Departments to continue to do and to take care of the people. But these other things that film seeing day after day on things have to change. And there is no question that there is a problem. What i dont understand is why no one is saying from the police side, yes, we get it. Were seeing the same thing you are and we got to get rid of the bad apples. Why does everything start with no we cant . Why doesnt it start with we see what youre talking about . Lets come together and figure out what to do. Well go and come right back and talk more. And abc news correspondent Adrienne Bankert on finding hope and healing at a time when the country needs it. Welcome back. The protests have people rethinking their stance on things like kneeling and the question is is Colin Kaepernick owed an apology . What do you think, sunny . Well, i dont i think hes not only owed an apology, whoopi. I think hes owed his job. I think hes owed back pay. I think he deserves a noble peace prize. When you listen to Roger Goodells may i cant kul pa he mentions everything. He says we are wrong. We should have listened. Athletes are allowed to take a knee. We support peaceful protests. He mentions everything except the man who started this peaceful protest. Taking the knee has become the symbol of these protests. We see it just all over our country. We see it actually internationally now. I think its shameful that people were allowed to coopt that movement and make it about the flag and make it something that it was never about. It really just is shameful. Im sort of shocked that Roger Goodell never mentioned his name and i have to give kudos to drew brees who finally has somehow seen the light and has said, my goodness, this isnt about the flag. It never was about the flag or the anthem. It was about peaceful protest. It was always shocking to me that people were telling a man how he could protest when that was what the anthem was about, our personal freedoms. Right. Well, you know who is still telling the nfl no kneeling. So hes not letting it go. Whos on the right side here, joy . Well, you know, sunny just said Colin Kaepernick is the hero of this and should be rewarded instead of thrown out of his job. The guy gave up his livelihood for a principle. It reminded me of muhammad ali who during the vietnam war said im not going to vietnam to fight people who never called me a name. He was vilified. He was stripped of his title. He was in the prime of his career. They almost threw him into jail. I think the Supreme Court was close to doing that and they banned him from boxing. Today we think of him as a hero. I think that Roger Goodell and the nfl need to get behind history and not be on the wrong side of it. I say that about a lot of people. Mitch mcconnell and the rest who are on the wrong side of history. Theyll pay the price in years to come. When we come back, well continue to talk about this. Well come back with you, meghan. Welcome back. Yesterday key democrats took a knee in solidarity which became a polarizing symbol to some folks. What were the optics like for you, meghan . Whoopi, i was actually thinking about the hong kong protesters when i saw that and ive been seeing protests across the nation. The greatest part about being an american is our freedom and democracy. One of the main tenants is the peaceful right to protest and the right to criticize protesting. Im happy to see that that is alive and well in this country. Ive never been more happy and more proud to see this is still a country that allows that when we see so many other nations who are thriving in fascism. Im a strong proponent of peaceful protesting. Thats the one Silver Lining right now. You can look at hong kong and see the people who cant have it and look at our nation and see the people that do. Heres something im going to move us to a totally different thing. Apparently people cannot agree on what happened in bunkergate. Apparently you know who was in the bunker. He was out of the bunker. He went double there himself. They put him down there. What do you think has gone on in bunkergate. Take a look. I went down during the day. I was there for a tiny little short period of time. It was much more for an inspection. There was no problem during the day. They said it would be a good time, take a look. Maybe sometime youll need it. We were reacting to three days of extremely violent demonstrations right across from the white house. A lot of injuries to police officers, arson, things were so bad that the secret service recommend the president go down to the bunker. We cant have that in our country. Okay. Im coming to all yall really quickly. Whos version are you buys, joy . I think that barr is covering his butt here. We know hes the one who gave the order to remind the peaceful pro protesters and use tear gas and rubber bullets on them. Meanwhile bunker boy doesnt want to look like hes not macho enough. Thats the problem. Trump better be careful. Everybody will turn on him eventually to cover their own butt. Exhibit a ag barr. Sunny . Well, exactly. Just seems to me when i watch these protests i remember watching protesters being tear gassed and bullet being shot at them. Doesnt feel to me this is a country thats being very supportive of peaceful protests. Its obvious that the president was rushed into a bunker. Ive never seen a president having to tour a bunker. A vital new chapter of American History is being written as we speak, and joining us to talk about it is Fox News Sunday anchor Chris Wallace whos also taking a look back at another historic era in his new book countdown 1945. How you doing, chris, and welcome back . Well, im doing great. Im delighted to be with all of you. Ive been listening to the first half hour. As i told, sunny, i learned more about Defund Police in her explanation than i learned in the last two weeks. Its kind of amazing. Youve been a reporter for 50 years. With everything youre seeing happening across the country, are you hopeful that a change is coming that will be beneficial to the whole nation . Well, when youre talking about Race Relations and police, i hope theres change. I hope theres reform and improvement. I cant say im especially hopeful that its going to happen. Whoopi, you and i are roughly the same age. You remember 1968. You remember rodney king. You remember Michael Brown in ferguson. You remember eric garner in new york city. They all have a similar pattern which is that there is a case of undue violence. There are protests and sometimes they devolve into riots. There are calls for reform and we are where we are. George floyd died. You know, you hope that this time its going to be different. I have to say im not sure i would bet on it. Sunny . Well, trump is positioning himself as a law and order president. These movements we are seeing in the vestreets are protesting la enforcement as we know it. Hes reigniting the fight over taking a knee in silent protest. Is this the right tone for the president to be taking in this moment . Im not going to talk about it in terms of right or wrong. The president has his base. He has his beliefs. Hes entitled to them. Let me talk about it in terms of politics. I would say that the last week was a very bad week for the president in terms of politics, in terms of his potential reelection prospects. When youre getting called out by the episcopal bishop of washington and the arch bishop of the Catholic Church of washington, when youre getting called out by jim mattis, to former chairman of the joint chiefs, mike mullen, and your own current secretary of defense breaks with you, thats not a good week. He had some good news on the economy. Clearly theres a new poll in the Washington Post that indicates by a two to one margin people dont think the president has handled the last week properly. His Approval Ratings have dropped. You can argue as to whether hes right or wrong, but politically its been a bad week. Chris, fox news is the most watched cable news outlet in the country. Nearly 70 of congressional districts and some democrats have refused to appear on the network. I was actually surprised to hear candidates say they wouldnt come on during the election. I think it was a missed opportunity. Why should democrats do more to reach out to the fox news viewer . Wow, i like that question. You know, its the same reason or explanation that Willie Sutton gave for robbing banks. Thats where the money is. As you say, its the top news network. Its the top basic cable network. We beat tnt and espn. It isnt despite what some people think just all right ring republic wing republicans. There are conservative democrats and independents. Anybody is going to need the fox vote, whether republican or democrat, to win the election. We saw what happens when the democrats ignored an awful lot of fox viewers and the con constituency they stand for in 2016. Its interesting, the candidates who appeared on fox and the candidates who didnt, Bernie Sanders appeared, Pete Buttigieg appeared. Cory booker and Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren refused to appear on fox. Im not sure thats why they lost. Boycotting fox didnt help. Okay. There are plenty of republicans that wont appear on msnbc. My question is this you spent six years in the White House Press corps during the reagan administration. Weve seen the Police Secretary berate journalists, name calling from trump. Hes called the press, which you are a part of, the enemy of the people. What do you think of that, sir . How do you feel as a member of the press . Enemy of the American People . Uhhuh. I think its awful. As ive said, this is not the first time ive said it, but ill say it again, joy. I think this president is involved in the most Concerted Campaign against the media in history. Now, i said that in a speech and somebody wrote me and said wait a minute what about john adams in 1800. I said i stand corrected. John adams was involved in the most Concerted Campaign against the media. Donald trump is number two. Having said that i want to say this, i think that some of the media has gone too far in response. Talk about the white house briefings. Im not happy about them from either side. I think that its much too contentious on the part of kayl Kayleigh Mcenany the press secretary and on the part of white house reporters. I was there covering ronald reagan. We didnt go easy, but we were trying to get information. I think the White House Press secretaries at the time under reagan were trying to dispense information. Now its become a kind of food fight or i dont think the American People are served very well by either side. But who started it . Thats the question. So because we got you see, i was making a whole thing there got you and were keeping you because we want you to stay with us, chris. So well be right back. Im a student of history. I love history. Im very interested in your book. Countdown 1945. Its an indepth account leading up to the United States dropping the atomic bomb on japan in 1942. An atomic weapon has only been used twice and only by the United States. After researching the book, where do you come down on the morality of using a weapon that kills tens of thousands of civilians if you count what happened after the war . Where do you come down on the morality of that . Its interesting as a kid growing up in the 50s thats a debate people used to have a lot. Should we have dropped the bomb or not . I wasnt sure. After researching the book, i dont think it was much of a close call. Im not sure that truman had any choice. It wasnt a choice between dropping the bomb or doing nothing. He was either going to drop the bomb and kill tens of thousands of people or he would have had to launch an invasion of japan which meant the war would have gone on for another year and a half and would have resulted in 500,000 american casualties and 1 million japanese casualties. There was going to be a blood bath either way. Given the fact that roosevelt had approved the Manhattan Project three years before, for truman not to use a weapon to end the war in a couple days and let it go on and a lot of americas young men and women to be killed, i dont think it was a tough call for him at all. Can i ask one followup question . Wasnt the emperor about to surrender . Also if they dropped it on hiroshimo, why drop it on nagasaki . We dropped the bomb on on hiroshimo and the japanese were silent. Three days later the u. S. Dropped a second bomb. We dropped the bomb and they didnt surrender. So we had to drop the second bomb. It was only then and the emperor had to go over the heads of his civilian government who wanted to continue the war and almost decided unilaterally to surrender himself. A new poll finds that 80 of americans worry that the country is spiraling out of control, but abc news correspondent Adrienne Bankert says theres an easy way for you to be an agent for change in her new book your hidden super power and shes here to tell us about it. Good morning, girl. Welcome to the view. Good morning. Whoopi, its good to be with you. Hey, everybody. Hi. Good morning. Weve been discussing theres a lot going on right now in the streets from the protests to the pandemic and youre on the streets. Youre a journalist. Youve been out there. What are you seeing . Well, you know, this is such a unique time because first the pandemic, it put us apart from each other. While we were in the midst of a very emotional time we were distanced physically and that can affect us in ways we dont even anticipate. Then with what happened this past week and with the protests and demonstrations, what we need to know is there are a lot of people hurting right now and that that kindness means so much more today because were in this visceral state than it might have even last month or last year. Youve been quarantining in your apartment in new york city. Youre participating in the cheer for people on the frontlines that happens every night at 7 00 p. M. What does it specifically mean to you though . It was one of the most Bright Moments of my time in isolation because all these neighbors that ill probably never meet were doing me a favor. They were reminding me there was unification happening, there was hope. We were altogether on balconies and fire escapes. It truly is a golden hour. The fact were still cheering every night at 7 00 p. M. For frontline workers is truly telling that we can come together in the most disruptive time. Adrienne, youve just written your first book your hidden super power. You talk about how the world is demanding us to be kind under pressure. Given the climate in this country and the extraordinary pressure were all under, what is your advice to people . Well, first of all, i would say that we all need to give each other a lot more mercy. Weve been through the most challenging time for all of us personally, professionally. So many journalists like me working from home and doing Different Things to tell the stories and go through our own emotional processes. That goes for Health Care Workers and for teachers and parents who have had their kids home. Were all going through change in every sector of our lives. If we take kindness and make it our identity, then our kneejerk response to challenge would be kindness. It wouldnt be the obligatory politeness or just trying to be nice. It would be more about who we are and just expressing that embrace to humanity we need right now. We all need a big hug right now, even if its not a physical hug. I dont disagree with that, adrienne. One of your chapters is entitled resilience in a crazy world. You talk about grief on a larger scale and on a personal level. Many people worry they dont know what to say or do for someone who is grieving. What do you find helps the most . Its interesting. One, i tell people to be kind and schedule kindness in their day just like they would brush their teeth or get their coffee or go to the gym. Being kind intentionally creates a muscle memory where you use your conscious for other peoples benefits. Youll know what to do when you meet a crossroads in your life. When it comes to grief, it can hit us like a freight train. For so many people around us, rather than focusing on ourselves we say what can i do to serve other people. Serving other people, we get the fuel we need to get going. Most people are looking for something consistent. Theres so much change in the world right now.
