Reporter this morning it was caught on video by a neighbor. This time it was a San Francisco public works employee. After receiving community complaints. The supervisor represents the Bernal Heights neighborhoods. I cant believe the city, the county of San Francisco would use tax dollars to be complicit in the erasure of a vitally important message. In a statement to abc7 news, the director of the Public Works Department apologized, calling it a mistake. To be clear, it was not done in an attempt to silence peoples anger, sadness and frustration over Police Brutality and institutional racism. I have reached out to the people who painted the mural to offer my sincere apology and assurance that we will not be removing her work from the boulder again. Some parents are using this as a teaching moment, and paymenting their own rocks. Black lives matter. Not just white lives. Every life matters. Theyre all people. What do you hope this accomplishes . I hope that people can see they have to do something. In San Francisco, abc7 abc7 Miriam Webster is change go its definition of racism. Kennedy mitchum took exception to the definition which defined racism as a belief that race is the primary determinant of high School Traits and capacities and racial differences produce an inherent superiority of a particular race. She emailed the editors and suggested that definition needed to be changed. I basically told them, they need to include that theres systematic oppression upon a group of people. It is not just, it is not just, i dont like someone. Well, the editors agree and they say a revision is on the way. All right. Well look back at another Racial Injustice and inequal. Well talk with nate boyer about his conversations with Colin Kaepernick. And hear from george floyd was laid to rest today after a funeral in houston, capping six days of memorials for the 46yearold killed by a Police Officer, who pressed his knee into floyds neck for nearly nine minutes. Along with family and friends, several texas elected officials spoke. A video message from democratic president ial candidate joe biden was played, and the reverend al sharpton gave the eulogy. Up you wanted to touch the world. Well, god had already made you but you didnt touch it in a basketball court. Or a football court. God had Something Else for you to do. Because all over the world, george, they are marching with your name. As we lay you to rest today, the movement wont rest until we get justice. Until we have one standard of justice. Yd was buried next to his mother at a cemetery south of houston. Reflect on when the day is over, when the marching is over, what are you going to do . What are you going to do . What are you a large crowd gathered at the foot steps of San Francisco city hall for a Memorial Service for george floyd. One of the more stirring moments came when one of the speakers asked people to take a knee, which has become a symbolic gesture in many of the protests following floyds death. Today it was a nod to the former 49er Colin Kaepernick who started kneeling in 2016 during the playing of the National Anthem as a form of protesting social inequal and Police Brutality. Well talk more about that now. Roger goodell has issued an apology, saying the league was wrong in the way it handled its response to player protest in the past. Nate boyer from pleasanton is a former nfl player and green beret. He is the man who suggested kaepernick kneel instead of sit. He joins me today. Hey, nate. How are you . Good. For those who dont remember, remind us how you and Colin Kaepernick recall inially connected and taking a knee to police brule. I actually, i grew up in the bay area. I grew up a huge 49ers fan. When i was a kid, it was joe montana, ronnie lott era with four super bowls and steve young as well. When Colin Kaepernick came along, i was immediately a big fan. This guy had an Immediate Impact once he step on the field i loved the way he played the game. I went to college after the time in the earl. I went to college in and i had that pre season with the seahawks. I had a lot of experience with the league after that. The one game i got to play in, i stood on the field while the anthem played and it was a really emotional moment for me. Thinking about my brothers in arms. Guys fighting overseas, guys who made the ultimate sacrifice. I had to carry one of my friends in a box draymoped with the fla. A year later colin is sitting on the bench during the National Anthem and he explained, this is doing it to speak out on social injustice, Police Brutality, things like this. My initial reaction was one of hurt because of what the symbom. So i wrote this letter. It went viral and colin read it and he wanted to meet with me. I met him a couple months before the election. Through our conversation, he asked if there was a different way he thought, that i thought he could demonstrate that wouldnt offend people in the military. I said no, but no matter what you do, some people will be offended. Taking aany from my opinion is more respectful. So he decided to take a knee that night. I stood next to him when i played the san diego chargers, eye to eye, different opinions but one man kneeling, one man standing. In support of rights and freedoms. Yeah. I have to ask you. Have you talked to Colin Kaepernick in the past couple weeks after all this happened . No. I would love tom sehe plentybu. But it has been really cool to see certain Law Enforcement officers, people around the world using that gesture as a unifying stance. So you two disagreed and then you zpaukd came to a mutual understanding. I want to ask you if you think thats whats happening on a broader front. We had drew brees saying he thought that kneeling was antimilitary. A position you had taken before you talked to kaepernick. So now hes apologized. Do you think his minds is changing . You think i underect y are. Were still in a pretty divided place as a country if you look at how everybody escapes to their side. Left or right, were pretty binary in a lot of ways. The last ten days or so, we have come together a lot more and there is more empathy. Speaking on drew brees, i feel the same way he does when the anthem is played. But it is the understanding that not everybody feels that way. And there are a lot of people who feel those symbols dont rep them as they should. Just listen. So the nfl is listening to players now. If you think theres a willingness to accept, different ways to express, participate at this. Or support, what do you think will happen in sidelines . What changes do you think well see coming . I think well see a lot more players taking a knee. What i hope more than anything is that theres a lot of action and followup and things do change. We do improve Law Enforcement across the country. We do, were better at holding each other accountable. Be just Law Enforcement. Everybody. We come together united. Things need to be fixed. Were not a perk country. I love this country but were not perfect. We have a lot of room to grow. Theres more people acknowledging the conversation. Lets move i dont understand that and take action. All right. Were out of time so this is the final yes or no question. You wrote a letter to President Trump in 2017 will there be another letter to him . I dont know. Sorry. All right. I havent thought about it. Now i have to make a decision. Well have to pursue that in the days ahead. Really great talking to you. Thank you so much. Take care. Fantastic to talk with him. Spencer christian is back. He spoke with mohammed alis family members about their close relationship with Colin Kaepernick. You and i have talked about this but perhaps people dont know how many times you interviewed mohammed ali and the relationship there. Yeah. We had an interesting relationship. I would like to call it a friendship. It spanned a period about 15 years. I knew him quite well. So it was a treat for me to interview his daughter and her son, jacob. We covered a number of topics. We talked about the inaction that a 10 cold cassius clay had with a white Police Officer in louisville, kentucky, and how that led to the amaze go career of mohammed ali. And we spoke with Colin Kaepernick and how it is a protest to alis legacy. The two of you have an alliance with a modern day athlete whose livelihood was taken away because much like mohammed ali, he had the courage to take a stab against Racial Injustice. Thats a former 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick. Tell us about your friendship with him and what youre trying to achieve. Colin has been family to us. There is no distinction. I think there is nobody better today who embodies my grandfathers spirit and his willingness to sacrifice everything for the sake of whats right and for africanamericans in this country within kaepni. Andy uncle stood for it. Theyre vex the sail. Because of that, we strongly support colin and everything hes done. Now just last week, the nfl commissioner Roger Goodell issued an apology to black players for not having listened to their complaints years ago about not listening to them. All the thing Colin Kaepernick was trying to call attention to when he took a knee. Will that be effective in bringing back change . First i think he needs to apologize to Colin Kaepernick directly. That was an incomplete statement. For me, without wholly speaking the truth, were not going to move forward the way we need to be. The nfl still has 70 players that are africanamerican, three black coaches. You know, broad sweeps need to take place within the corporate atmosphere, quality and policy. So no. Its a first step forward but without a direct apology to Colin Kaepernick, i dont think so. It seems ironic to me that the previousotests were seeing stem from an inaction between a black man and a white Police Officer. Yet going back to the Young Mohammed ali, the 10yearold cassius clay, it was the inaction with a white Police Officer that led to the amaze go career of mohammed ali. Tell us about that. When my grandfather was a little boy, he had his bike. Like all little boys, he loved his bike riding around town. One day someone stole his bike. There was a white Police Officer who approached my grandfather. He asked him what was wrong. And my grandmothers father said im going to whip the guy who stole my bike. And the officer said if you want to protect the things that are important to you, you need to fight for it. That officer was a boxing coach. He took my grandfather under his wing for six years. He taught him how to box. It was that inaction that really formed and began my grandfathers career. And i think thats a really important story to tell. Its a statement of what this nation must become. Thats what policing in this country must be. Anything less is unacceptable. We need to move forward toward that picture of a brighter future. Look at the growing protest not only spreading across the United States but around the world. It is a Diverse Group of people protesting. All colors, all ethnicities. What needs to change first and are you optimistic that finally well see meaningful change . I think im optimistic. White America Needs to stand up and say enough is enough. This is not a black problem. Black people are not the problem in this country. It is not our fault that Racial Injustice and Police Brutality and mass incarceration occurs. It is a problem with the oppressor inflicted upon the oppressed. And i think white America Needs to step up and address the issues of racial hatred. Whether or not it is within yourself, but in your community, certainly. Wow, that was a terrific interview, spencer, to be able to hear directly from alis relatives like that. It was fascinating. I really enjoyed hearing their perspective on things. Yeah. The whole segment is fantastic. With nate and the ali family giving us so much perspective. Thank you again, spencer. San francisco restaurants will be allowed to reopen for dining outdoors on friday. All counties except alameda are allowing it. The state says Movie Theaters can reopen starting friday. Although you go it will be later in the bay area, if county Health Officers approve. But theaters would have to reduce capacity and theyre asked to consider using disposable or washable seat covers. What is your thought . Are you ready to rush out to a theater with social distancing . I suppose. I wont race back out. I was off friday and we went out to a restaurant outdoors for the first time. And it was a great experience. It was a little surreal and change. A smattering of people. I have to say, the restaurant staff was so cautious and so attentive to the protocols. We felt very comfortable. It was nice to be out. All right. Spencer, what do you think . I am really looking forward to going out to dinner again, at a restaurant, in a restaurant. I can hold off the Movie Theater for a while. One of the things im looking forward to. Weve been ordering takeout food from restaurants and i have watched carefully how the staff is handling everything. People seem to be really, really cautious and clean, safe. Yes. You kind of wonder how the Movie Theater experience will go. Moving on, some u. S. Mill bases could see a name change. A bipartisan conversation is considering renaming nearly a dozen major and installation thats bear the name of Confederate Military commanders. That means ft. Bragg in north carolina, ft. Hood in texas, and in virginia, they could be renamed. However, a Statement Released yesterday said the names represent individuals. Not ideologies. And last week the u. S. Marine corps announced the removal of all displays of the Confederate Flag from marine installations. Dan, let me start with you. You grew up in the carolinas. So what does that mean to you to have these names changes . I did. Larry and spencer. I think to be honest, it is probably about time. And the statement that the names represent individuals, not ideologies. The problem is those names represented the ideology. Those individuals represented the ideology at the time in many rms. I think it is a very sensitive time. I think if were going to move on as a country, we need to take these issues seriously, and take things away, or take things down that really represent something hurtful to a great number of americans. Spencer . I could not agree more with dan. There are many people, especially in the south where we both grew up, who embrace that part of our history. They had ancestors who fought for that cause but it was a cause that was antiamerican. The confederacy fought against the United States of america. And most of what it to do for is not anything we honor today. If streets were named after hitlers top lieutenants in germany, i dont think that would be received very well. So it is about time those names came down. Well said. Thank you. Ibm is saying it will get out of the facial recognition business over concern about how it can be used for mass surveillance and racial profiling. They sent a letter to u. S. Lawmakers yesterday saying the company firmly opposes and wont condont uses of any technology for mass surveillance, racial profiling, and violations of basic human rights and freedoms. He also called for a National Dialogue on whether the technology should be used at all. What do you think . I think technology is fantastic at times but it can also be used in ways that a lot of people are concerned by. And this is an example of that. Some people may use clear when tlargts and they scan your eyes or your finger pripts. It does allow to you sail through rather quickly, but also, you know somewhere your personal information is being stored and you can be tracked. I see both sides of it. I think it is interesting that theyre making a move to get away from it but some other company will jump in and say we can make money out of this. You cant put the genie back in the bottle to finds regulations and laws to try to rein in and limit the use. The technology will only continue to expand. Yes. Netflix is taking on the u. S. Government, sort of. The series space force has beaten the u. S. Military to the punch in securing trademark rights for the name, space force. If you can believe that. This is according to the hollywood reporter. They say the show now has trade marshall rights in several nations, but the air force has a pending application for registration in the u. S.
