Today the police chief explained why they took some of the measures they did to save the city from being overrun by agitators. Abcs chris nguyen is on that story. Addressing some of the events that unfolded in san jose over the past week, the city defended its Police Departments response to those they call agitators who were present at otherwise peaceful protests. We have seen too many episodes in which people have exploited the cover of peaceful protest to commit violent acts, to destroy the city in various ways. Which began friday afternoon, were meant to call attention to the death of george floyd as well as Police Brutality across the nation. However, there were moments of violence. And multiple officers were struck on their person, helmet, face shield with various objects. Of the 180 protestsrelated arrests, nearly half were san jose residents. It was loud. It was fast. It was violent. There is no other way to describe it. In 21 years, ive never been a snapshot like that where so much chaos was raining down at one time. Police have come under fire for using tear gas and rubber foam baton rounds during the process. Raj from Silicon Valley dbug, a local social Justice Organization said he saw some officers aim directly at peaceful protesters. I dont think there is any sort of way you could characterize the actions of the Police Department as appropriate by any stretch of the imagination. And i think there has to be some real accountability over the violence of the officers. The chief is encouraging the community to report any instances of wrongdoing and says all complaints will be investigated. Milys all together and we switched to geico; saved money on our boat insurance. How could it get any better than this . Dad, i just caught a goldfish theres no goldfish in this lake. The nba will soon be back, but without the warrior, as we reported earlier, the leagues board of governors planned restart games. Players expect to approve it tomorrow. Training camps would open july 9th. Games starting july 31st. All practices, games, meals, sleep would take place at the disney Sports Complex in orlando. 22 teams and n an nba bubble, daily virus testing. Teams that reach the finals would be in orlando for two and a half months minimum. Because they have the worst record in the league, the warriors are not goingment their season is over. On the same day that drew brees apologized for his comments about kneeling and the flag, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan made some really strong comments about racism today. Shanahan not holding back at all, saying a lot of people associate racism with slavery and the distant past, not realizing this is an issue black americans deal with every day to this day. I mean, people are hurting, and people, black people mainly are scared. And the disturbing thing is theyve been scared for a long time. And this is this is it. This is a cry for help that theyve been giving for a long time, and people dont totally listen. And i think everyone is at fault for that. But im not saying black people are, because theyre the ones who have been screaming. I think everyones at fault for not totally listening. I think one thing that bothers me the most throughout this all and throughout my own Life Experiences and stuff, racism is a big deal in our country right now. Thats a fact. Thats not debatable. Its always been a big deal. Former as catcher Bruce Maxwell was the first baseball player to take a knee in 2017. Heavy is now playing in mexico. And in his mind, there is no question that his kneeling has kept him out of the majors. Maxwell a guest today on our with authority podcast. And he opened up about everything, what it was like being half black and half white in alabama, his decision to kneel, threats against him and his family that continue. And the moment that changed his life. My life changed after that moment, to be honest with you. Ive never witnessed so much hatred for one thing in my entire life. The density and the threats and the comments that i was receiving, even to this day about that day of kneeling during the national anthem, its disturbing. It really is. I never knew somebody could possess so much hatred for trying to stand up for doing whats right. My parents always taught me standing up for whats right might not be easy, but it is the right thing to do. And i thought i was doing what was right, what was in my heart. And to be penalized and to in my opinion lose my career over that was demoralizing. The good news is that bruce is enjoying his life and career in mexico. As soon as we have that podcast up, well let you know. Time for another edition of abc7 call my play. You send me the video. I call the action. No games obviously right now. Finally tonight, a few thoughts what really matters, black lives. Black lives matter. George floyds life mattered. And so does his death, ripping over a raw wound that for some inexplicable reason america still cant heal. In his honor, another march on washington is scheduled for october 28th. 57 years to the day when dr. Martin luther king jr. Delivered his i have a dream speech. One of the most powerful, inspiring and soaring or rations in human history. I reread it again today. On that hot summer day on the national mall, dr. King talked about a check that 250,000 marchers came the cash, a promissory note as he described that all americans be entitled to the same unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. A note king told the crowd that they that was in default. In many ways, it still is. Certainly america is a much different place than it was on august 28th, 1963. But what really matters at this very difficult time in our great country is it is not different enough. The demand for change weve seen on the streets all over america this past week a hopeful sign that one day soon perhaps it will be. I always love the hear from you. Let me know what you think.
