Ive covered a lot of protests as a reporter, and i can tell you there was Something Different about todays march in San Francisco. Black lives matter no justice, no tus o people into the Mission District this afternoon for protest and march george floyd killed by Minneapolis Police last week. For too long the laws, these murderers, police, when they kill innocent black men and never get charged for it. We dont get these police to stop killing us now theyre going to kill our children and our childrens children. Along with free food and water, many people handed out masks and hand sanitizer. Everyone has a mask on, every person ive seen. Everyone has been peaceful and calm. This is a protest, but i dont blame any of th its real deep frustration and anger. Its not just pain of one person. George floyd is just one. Its hundreds and hundreds of young black and brown men and women. It feels really different. It feels like were being taken seriously. I made it to the top of the steps of the high school and you can see the people showing up. People standing on top of the school bus in the middle of the street. Now that im here surrounded by all of this, its incredibly moving. Ive been showing up and really seeing, understanding that its not safe for everyone to be here. As a white person, its a lot less likely that im going to be hurt or killed, so i really need to be there. Theres so many things we need to do. Ive been outside for several hours now and these vans full of officers are the first Police Presence ive seen. Theyre a few blocks from the protests and they seem to be moving out now. After dark, the protesters snaked through the seats landing at city hall and the hall of justice. One thing i have heard from several people today about being an ally is the feed had to reach out to your own circle, your own family and friend who is may not understand the meaning behind this current movement. In the news room, im kate larson, abc 7 news. At least two San Francisco Police Officers knelt in solidarity with Police Officers when todays march reached the station. The officers took a knee after being urged to do so by the crowd. Back to that very large rally happening right now in oakland. Abc 7 News Reporter j. R. Stone is following that story for us. Hes here with the latest on the enormous turnout. You can see it from the pictures here. That says it all. This is one just wrapping up. It started around 8 00 p. M. So far we are talking about a peaceful night. So many upset about george floyd and upset about the curfew. These are some of the most recent images from the protest. In this video you can see the size of the crowd here. We arent talking about dozens or even hundreds. Were talking about thousopands. They also want the mayor to ane cuew. There have bee a number of speakers at 14th and broadway in downtown oakland. Many of them talked about the hope that the narrative doesnt change going forward, the hope that all eyes are on what happened in minneapolis and what has happened to so many across the country. Here is what some of those folks at the rally had to say. Its because we are here speaking our own opinion about whats going on and its not right. But the problem is that we have to do this in order for them to realize that were not playing anymore. This is only the first inning. Im looking for more home runs. Thats the message. I think that people are waking up. I think people are understanding more and more how unjust this system of policing we have now. But im not here for reform. Im here for abolishing the police. Many businesses have boarded up out of fear so far we have not seen that. We have seen a very large Police Presence on the outskirts of r. Officers coming from other cities to help keep a close eye on things. But again, tonight no problems reported. We are closely watching things, and well keep you updated if anything changes. There is still a decent sized group out there on the streets of oakland. J. R. Stone, abc 7 news. All right, j. R. , thank you. Now to the south bay, we go to amanda del castillo who is live in south bay. You are there after several days of protesting. Do people feel theyre being heard . In all honesty i have found there was no one answer to that question. What was clear is people are still feeling that pain. Theyre feeling that frustration. I didnt feel like anything i wrote tonight would fully represent the effort. So im trying Something Different. Im removing myself completely, and i want you to really hear these protesters. Black lives matter this new generation is going to set america up for a greater future than its ever had. Thats why i have faith with those kids and thats why i protect them so much. Im 15 years old. I shouldnt be worrying about life whenever i walk my dog. I shouldnt be worrying about my life whenever i go to school. We have black family members. We have black friends. I have black coworkers. This matters to me. This is important to me. Baot0 years d i was here standing up for people. Stand up, fight back. Were only 14 and 15. They didnt grow up knowing that its either black or white. They grew up knowing that we are all equal. So, whe theseeng, it messes the. What do we want . Justice when do we want it . Now i feel like were all equal. This new generation is going to be powerful. They work for us to protect us. But whos going to protect us from them . I personally feel that the police have just kind of been meeting our protests with the very brutality that we are protesting. Its exactly what i grew up knowing america to be. Its a melting pot and everyone coming together as one. And we feel justice has been done wrong. Yesterday hes telling me, mom, i just want to move away to where everybody has my skin color because im scared. Am i going to be next . Say it now george floyd. Say it now george floyd. Say it now george floyd. Protesters who showed up to downtown san jose daily are determined to keep at it until the answer to the question am i next is without a doubt no as it should be. Amanda, thank you. Tomorrow curfews expire in San Francisco, san jose, santa rosa, san mateo, napa. American canyon expires tomorrow. But the city of vallejo issued its own order that runs indefinitely. Say her name breonna taylor. Say her name steph curry joined demonstrators today. Reporter this afternoon the news so many had been waiting for, more charges, more arrests in the case of george floyd. Former Minneapolis Police officer Derek Chauvins charge upgraded to Second Degree murder. The other three charged with aiding and abetting Second Degree murder. I believe these developments are in the interest of justice for mr. Floyd, his family, our community, and the state. All four officers in custody. Protesters reacting all over the country but especially in minneapolis. The energy has increased as news about the additional charges have come through here. Weve seen people standing in solidarity, singing, coming together. Many are from this community and spoke about what the day means to them. This gives me chills and makes me happy and sad to see everybody together but sad because its for what happened. What happened here should not have happened, and it shouldnt happen anywhere. I feel that this is going to be the time when we can finally get some justice. George floyds long time friend Steven Jackson also visiting the memorial after hearing the news. I know the family was pushing for it. I see the big picture. I would rather it be Second Degree murder and get all of them in where you can put all of them in and bury all of them. Now, in the wake of these nationwide protests over the death of george floyd, the House Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on Police Brutality next week. Witnesses have not yet been announced but they are expected to include community leaders, activists, experts, and law enforcement. Abc News Reporter j. R. Stone spoke to a former prosecutor about his take on the new charges. Ama, iim hammer who is a prosecutor here in the bay area for several years. He was also a police commissioner, and he says that those rallying for justice should feel good about a Second Degree murder charge for derek chauvin. For anyone who thinks maybe thats not enough, it carries 40 years in prison. Based on what we see, and we see a hell of a lot. We have three different angles from video. Its not a secret what happened. It just screams out to me as a murder case. Not first degree murder. Its not premeditated from what i can see and its not a specified felony. But its a solid secondary murder case just as if somebody said im going to go kill him. Now, keep in mind 40 years in prison for this officer could basically be a life sentence because of his age. Hammer says going for a first degree charge could ruin the case if you dont have enough to convict. He also says it is often very challenging to convict Police Officers but thinks a Second Degree charge say strong one. J. R. Stone, abc 7 news. All right. J. R. , thank you.
