This was one of many powerful images of unity that played out on city streets across america. Police officers kneeling with protesters in fayetteville, North Carolina. Both sides helping to defuse the tensions of this very tough past week. Inside those protests is an army of citizen journalists and what are being called cell phone witnesses with a front row to history. Theyre not just witnessing history, theyre making it. I spoke earlier with professor alyssa richardson, author of bearing witness while black, africanamerican smartphones and the new protest. In the social media era people are crediting advancements in cell phones and citizen journalists for documenting instance of Police Brutality. How big a role has that played in moving the conversation forward and bringing about change . Its been an incredible journal in terms of smartphone witnessing. These kinds of videos actually give credence and proof to what many africanamericans knew for a very long time that Police Brutality is persistent in our society. With these kinds of smartphone videos, we have the proof we need to move the needle forward on conversations about that brutality. One of the things thats quite alarming, though, is that theyre being shown quite casually. Im concerned in my research t further ask you, what is some of the mental trauma that can occur, particularly for people of color, from seeing black people repeatedly dying tragic deaths on screen . One of the things i found in writing my book bearing witness while black is there have been three overlapping eras of domestic terror against black people. That hs giy lynching which has given way to what we have now. Through each of those eras weve had black witnesses use the technologies of their day to speak out about those injustices. Dr. Richardson, cases regarding Police Brutality and race garner divisive responses. But there seems to be collective outrage over the deaths of Ahmaud Arbery and george floyd from across the political spectrum. What do you think is different . Are views on this topic changing in this country . I think its different this time because everyone recognizes that africanamericans are fighting two wars at once before we even got a chance to mourn the disproportionate effects of covid19, africanamericans had to look back and say, is this what is going to be what returning to normal after the pandemic looks like, getting back to the business of Police Brutality . I think seeing these videos juxtaposed so closely together, seeing Ahmaud Arbery first, not having footage of breonna taylor, say the womens names too, then this footage of george floyd, it reminds me of 2016 all over again when we had the death of alton sterling first, Philando Castille a day later. So a lot of africanamericans are tired, and this time theres a multiethnic coalition that says, yes, were tired with you. I think the Tipping Point, the additional footage of amy cooper in central park actually wielding a White Supremacy in a way that could have been fatal to christian cooper, who was the bird watcher there. All of these elements together witnessed through smartphones give us a frontrow seat to some of the hypocrisies that existed precovid and what well have to deal with after it. Our thanks to dr. Richardson for that perspective. She also talks about this movement to combat white silence, silence being complici racial inequality. Were seeing that, were seeing very diverse crowds take to the streets to say, black lives matter, to say that enough is enough. And also not just on the streets but in social media as well, were seeing celebrities of all backgrounds come out and take a stance, companies as well. Peaceful protesters cleared from the area with tear gas and rubber bullets. Overnight, protests turning violent in manhattan. The iconic macys store looted a short time ago. In minneapolis, George Floyds family pleading for peace. His brother breaking down. We have complete coverage ahead on this tuesday, june 2nd. And we do begin with President Trump threatening military force as outrage across the country spills into a second week. Protesters rallying against the death of george floyd, and all Police Brutality, defied curfews in city after city, marching through the streets, blocking traffic, facing off with officers mixed in with Peaceful Protesters were looters and arsonists. More than 5,000 people have been arrested over the past seven days. Despite the chaosduri the night its this daytime demonstration getting the attention this morning. Peaceful demonstrators were tear gassed, beaten, and forcefully pushed back outside the white house. It happened moments before the president delivered remarks in the rose garden where he declared himself the law and order president and called for a crackdown on protesters. Today i have strongly recommended to every governor to deploy the National Guard in sufficient numbers that we dominate the streets. Mayors and governors must establish an overwhelming Law Enforcement presence until the violence has been quelled. If a city or state refuses to take the actions that are necessary to defend the life and property of their residents, then i will deploy the United States military and quickly solve the problem for them. The president then walked over to the nearby and historic st. Johns Episcopal Church after his path was forcefully cleared of protesters. Trump stood in front of the church, held up a bible, and posed for pictures with the attorney general and other aides you see there. Our jon karl takes us through the events. Reporter this was an extraordinary scene on many levels. Completely unannounced. This was something that was hastily added to the president s schedule at the end of the day. They were looking for an opportunity for him to go out i issue. Of course, we hadnt seen him since saturday. Soe made the walk from the white house across Lafayette Park to st. Johns church, which has suffered some vandalism over the last few days. Its a great church, by the way. This is a church that every president since James Madison has attended. But what was so strange about this series of events is, i was out here on the north lawn before, just in the hour before, less than hour before he went over there. They had to hastily clear out the area because there were many, many protesters out there on the other side of Lafayette Park right by that church. Peacefully protesting. And there was a show of force by Law Enforcement here, including the use of a lot of tear gas. I could hear the explosion of the tear gas canisters here at the white house as those protesters were forcefully aparance. To make room for the johns church. Our thank to jon karl. The bishop of st. Johns church is outraged by the president s photo op, saying trump used the church as a backdrop for a message that goes against the teachings of jesus. Bishop Mariann Edgar budde pointed out that the president did not pray or acknowledge the pain people of color are feeling. She said they do not support quote his incendiary response to a wounded, grieving nation. In new york city, a curfew will be in place again tonight. Streets need to be clear by 8 00 p. M. , three hours earlier than last night. Looters were again breaking into stores in manhattan, including the iconic macys store and Luxury Stores on madison avenue. The number of police in the city is being doubled to 8,000. Officials believe groups infiltrating peaceful protests are behind the violence. In minneapolis, a much different scene, the emotional brother of george floyd visited the scene where he died triggering a week of mass demonstrations. Amid his anguish, Terrence Floyd called for an end to the olen. Alex perez was the brink looking on, George Floyds griefstricken younger brother terrence coming to the site of the tragedy. His knees buckling as he approaches the makeshift memorial. Then the anguish on the spot er breath then dropping to the street, tearfully speaking to him. I need you and pops to watch over me. I know yall got me. I know what you want. Reporter terrence turning to those around him for strength, then passionately addressing the crowd, demanding the violence stop. Like it was already said, but i doubt youre half as upset as i am. So if im not out here wowing out, if im not over here blowing up stuff, if im not over here messing up my community, then what yall doing . What are yall doing . Yall doing nothing because thats not going to bring my brother back at all. My family is a peaceful family. My family is godfearing. Reporter encouraging people to make their voice matter and vote. Not just vote for the president , vote for the preliminaries, vote for everybody educate yourself its a lot of us and we still going to do this peacefully. Reporter the younger f pressing for people to keep protesting. He wants anger, he says, but anger that can make change. He also wants those three other officers who were involved to be charged with murder. The states attorney general now leading the case, vowing to charge others responsible, yet warning convictions might be a challenge. But that doesnt mean that when we get to a courtroom that its going to be some sort of easy slam dunk. History proves that it isnt. Reporter terrence then leading a rousing tribute to the crowd. Another is planned saturday in North Carolina where he was born. A public viewing takes place monday in houston. His funeral is next tuesday morning, also in houston. So many powerful images that we saw over the past 24 hours or so. Even obviously beyond that as well. But especially when you look at what happened in washington, d. C. , when you saw what happened in minneapolis, people are saying, we are seeing two different stories there when we see the peaceful images and peaceful protests, but then in washington, d. C. , we saw protesters being tear gassed, being pushed back, so that the president could walk over to st. Johns church. And this morning he is getting a lot of praise from his supporters. Youve got people who are sounding off online saying that the president is showing a lot of strength here, that this is what we needed when it comes to enforcing the law. But then youve got others who essentially say they have been incited by this, and this has made them angry, and thats why they went out in force even more so in the streets. Even though we saw a relatively calm nation last night and overnight, there were still people who were definitely angry by the sights they saw outside in washington. Its important to note when we saw protests earlier, its really hard to tell who were the protesters, who were the looters, who were the rioters. In this case, in front of the white house, the juxtaposition of seeing the president inside saying that he is a law and order president who is an ally of Peaceful Protesters, when just moments before that, even in the background as hes saying that you could hear the flash momentbe that, you saw a massive use of force by the National Guardsmen to clear protesters, to make way for the president , so that he could make that walk, a rare walk outside of the front gates of the white house, through Lafayette Park, to st. Johns Episcopal Church. Its really hard to hear his message. The first time the president has addressed the nation, and his message to say hes an ally to Peaceful Protesters, when the complete opposite was going on outside right in front of the white house, in front of our own eyes, was just incredible to see. President trump standing in front of one of washington, d. C. s most Historic Churches holding a bible but criticized by the churchs bishop for not stopping to pray. Earlier Presumptive Democratic nominee joe biden met and prayed with black leaders in delaware. He will speak in philadelphia today. After another night of sometimes violent protests, an effort is already under way on capitol hill to draft legislation Holding Police accountable for their actions. Earlier i spoke with representative karen bass. Congressmember karen bass, thank you so much for joining us. In the rose garden monday, the president declared himself a law and order president as he threatened to use military force to quell the violence at protests. What is your reaction to his remarks and his walk to st. Johns church . Well, i think his remarks were very sad. Its like the least that the community, that the country, needed right now. We need someone who can heal the nation, heal the painful wound, and bring the country together. Not divide the country. That statement was typical, but it was very divisive. What can you tell us about legislative solutions being proposed right now by the Congressional Black Caucus . We are developing a legislative package, and at the center of the package is really passing legislation that allows communities to hold police accountable. So for example, the Police Officer that murdered george floyd, he was fired. If he wasnt arrested, all he had to do was move a few miles away and he could continue to work as a Police Officer, even though he had numerous complaints against him and had been involved in officerinvolved shootings. Congressmember, i noticed the proposed bill addressed chokeholds. Weve seen similar bills come and go in the past, particularly a house bill federally banning chokeholds after the 2015 death of eric Garner Police custody. How are things going to be different this time . I think were at an incredible moment of inflection within our country. This is a moral moment. And i think that the outrage that has been sadly displayed around our country might raise the level of concern to the point where people will be willing to vote for legislation. I think were in a different moment. You represent parts of los angeles which is under a 12hour curfew right now. What do you want the nation to know about your community . Well, i want the world to know that los angeles is a wonderful place. I am very saddened at the violence. But im inspired by the involvement. Its an absolute rainbow. As a matter of fact, in many parts of los angeles, there are very few africanamericans. So one of the things in the protests, one of the things that we have seen around our country is that people of every color have turned out. The violence is unfortunate, but one thing i want to make sure doesnt happen is that africanamericans as a whole get blamed for violence that is not i sn peleprra bla lives m who ar not africanamerican. And i dont condone the violence. What i do condone, congratulate, and promote is the participation in peaceful protests. Lastly, congressmember, what does america look like a week from now, a month from now . What i hope is that we have begun healing in our communities and in our nation. And if its not the president that can lead our nation, i certainly hope that other leaders, members of congress, myself, and other people, are able to fill in the Leadership Void that we feel now and promote peace, promote unity, promote solutions to the longstanding problem of police abuse. Our thanks to congressmember bass there. Its important also to note that some of these members of the cbc were civil rights leaders. Its the last thing i want to do. Dont think for a second that he represents who these cops are from all over the county and around the nation. We go out there to help people, not do that nonsense. He sanctioned the use of Police Officers using tear gas. In riot gear to clear the churchyard. I am outraged. Kenneth, the threat is large. It doesnt matter if you are going to businesses reopening or if youre taking part in a peaceful protest or if youre voting today. Regarding the voting specifically, one thing that was reassuring to me is i saw there was an increase in absentee ballots. People are enacting social distancing measures at the polling stations. Ive read some stations are going to give people pens so theyre not reusing the pens. Theyre going to require masks, possibly gloves, hand sanitizer. These are all important steps. Were still in the first wave, so any lapse in our protective measures could result in more outbreaks, more spikes. This morning weve got a new report on social distancing and maskwearing to stop the spread of the coronavirus. What are the Key Takeaways here . Well, the Key Takeaways directly relate to what we were talking about. Researchers looked at 172 studies looking at this coronavirus, sars, and mers. The big takeaways, social distancing does prevent persontoperson transmission. They were saying one meter, about 3. 3 feet, really reduces it. Two meters, a little more than six feet, even better. The studies also proved that masks do reduce the spread, as does eye goggles. The important point here is theres no more debate, we know these measures will prevent persontoperson transmission. This is something businesses should really take into account when thefting new policies, sothg the spread of this pandemic but prevent the next one as people are out there right now, demonstrating, voting or going back to businesses, that masks, gloves, social distancing, all of it really does work. This study just proves it. Our thanks to dr. Alok patel. When we come back, the Music Industry is marking blackout tuesday. Why miss america is extending her reign for one more year. Year.
