The violence in the streets leading to hundreds of arrests, leaving the despair in the wake of destruction. These people are tearing up our livelihood. Our Abc News Team on the ground in minneapolis. And across the country, with the latest developments. Good morning on a wrenching sunday in america. Whit and i are right here in new york city. Evas on the scene in minneapolis. Overnight, the protests escalating across the country over george floyd who died after nearly nine minutes with his neck under the knee of a Minneapolis Police officer. This, as more than a dozen cities declare curfew. And call in the National Guard. And its happening against the backdrop of a pandemic. With large crowds and some people not wearing masks. Lets get right to eva where it all started in minneapolis, and eva, whats the situation there on the ground right now . Whit, this is the scene that people in cities all across america are waking up to this morning. There were protests here again last night. The National Guard was out trying to keep people off the streets, keeping things relatively under control, but that was not the case in many cities. Team coverage across the country. Lets start with matt gutman in los angeles. Good morning, matt. Reporter eva, good morning. You can see this family here, starting to assess the damage here. Every store along this block is gutted out. All the glass they broke through a bunch of those screens there. You can see the dumpsters that have been burned. There are police on the other side that have completely closed down this part of the city, and just before we came to a live shot this morning, i sea more looting happening now. What distinguishes what we saw from last night from riots in years past to other protests, was they took it to the heart of privilege of america like Beverly Hills. Overnight, fiery unrest coast to coast. Demands for justice erupting into spasms of rioting and looting from new york city, where these cruisers were set aflame, to los angeles, where mass looting took place. And dozens of cities in between. In nashville, the historic city hall set ablaze. The National Guard called in now to tame the unrest. And in los angeles, saturday, the demonstrations beginning in downtown, then sprawling across the city. Youre not going anywhere. Reporter one going to the symbols of privilege in america. Beverly hills rodeo drive, there in a tense standoff. Theyre starting to fire theyre starting to fire using shotguns to fire what appears to be pellets or bean bags of some sort. Theyre trying to move the crowd back. This Police Car Set ablaze. Trying to push back demonstrators. This isnt the answer. Honest to god, we made our point. Reporter early on, Police Telling abc news that protesters were mostly civil, but those skirmishes gave way to looting. Right there on rodeo drive, looters smashing into luxury stores. Thats a target back there, and you can see them hauling out a bigscreen tv. No police in sight and seemingly everywhere police overwhelmed. In seattle, two ar15 rifles taken from a police car, a quickthinking Security Guard grabs one rifle and removes the magazine. In chicago, more cars set on fire. Police razing the bridges, clashes breaking out there. And one group of people seen on camera beating three officers before other protesters put themselves in harms way to stop the violence. In indianapolis, that situation turning deadly, that gunfire breaking out killing at least one person, and on the east coast dozens arrested after a violent night in atlanta. Eva, just minutes ago we saw the National Guard deployed for the first time. Last night was one of the worst nights atlanta has seen in a generation, but the question is how many more nights like it are we going to see, and at this point Law Enforcement tells us they simply dont know. Eva e eva . Matt gutman for angeles. In new york city, protests were held in several neighborhoods. With more than 345 arrests and attacks on at least 15 police vehicles. Abcs Zachary Kiesch has more for us. Good morning, zachary. Reporter eva, good morning to you. The street sweepers have been running back and forth on 14th avenue. Union square is typically a melting pot, last night it was ground zero, or the center point in this conflict between the community and the police. Youre seeing video now of some of these violent clashes happening. In many ways, this is the voice of hopelessness. You see folks taking over this police cruiser. That happened several times, many interactions just like this. Were told at least 30 cops were injured and at least 300 arrests were made. Protesters were out in response to the death of george floyd for the second night here. But it cant be minimized that the hurt on some level is homegrown. Theres amadou diallo, eric garner. Issues right here in new york city and i think the interconnectedness of this is what were seeing across the country. Literally, thousands of points that havent been heard in new york city. We saw some of that frustration come out. The police are being criticized for some videos that are surfacing online in regards to their encounters with protesters. The mayor says police were put in an impossible situation. It should also be noted that the mayor campaigned on Police Reform and many people here believe that hasnt happened. Eva. All right, Zachary Kiesch for us. The unrest extending to President Trumps doorstep. Protesters making their feelings loud and clear, demonstrating near the white house. Abcs rachel scott joins us from washington with more. Good morning, rachel. Reporter eva, good morning. The anger and frustration gripping the nation, spilling over right here into the president s front yard. You can see behind me as some of the crews start to try and clean up some of the debris and gra graffiti left here overnight, it was chaos in the nations capital. Demonstrators circling the white house complex, some throwing bricks, rocks, even fireworks trying to rip barricades to get even closer, and as those crowds grew the tension escalated. The National Guard was activated to help park police. Parts of d. C. Going up in flames. Cars set on fire. Some demonstrators vandalizing federal buildings. Others Looting Stores overnight and many still gathering peacefully trying to demand justice for george floyd. This normally is a section of d. V. D. C. , eva, where tourists gather trying to get a glimpse of the white house. Last night secret service set up these barricades, a buffer between the protesters and the gates of the white house. Some protesters determined to send a clear message to the president and the rest of the nation. One writing on a wall behind me, he was human too. Eva . Rachel scott, thank you. Guys, we are waking up this morning after seeing unrest from coast to coast. The country clearly at a tipping point. Dan . As we said, wrenching morning in america. Eva, thank you. Well come back to you soon. Overnight, with those protests raging outside the white house, inside President Trump was on twitter threatening to retaliate with, in his words, vicious dogs and ominous weapons. Abcs cecilia vega is in washington with more on that angle. Cecilia, good morning to you. Reporter dan, good morning to you. He continued to tweet late into the night, praising Law Enforcement, blasting the mayor of minneapolis. As the president himself once again during times of civil unrest in this country is under fire for stoking division. Overnight, that chaos erupting just steps from the white house. But a show of force by the president s make America Great again supporters didnt happen. Earlier in the day, the president inviting those supporters to show up, tweeting, tonight, i understand is maga night at the white house . He later denied he was stoking racial tensions. By the way, they love africanamerican people. Maga loves the black people. Reporter in a tweet that critics invoked of Civil Rights Era of sicking dogs on protesters, the president said no one came close to breaching the fence and if they had they would have been greeted with the most vicious dogs and the most ominous weapons i have ever seen. Also in the president s line of fire, d. C. s democratic mayor. He accused her of not letting local police intervene with protests outside the white house. That false claim was quickly contradicted not only by washington officials but the president s own secret service, who said d. C. Police were indeed very much part of the response. What used to be heard in dog whistles we now hear from a bull horn. Reporter while President Trump said he did speak with George Floyds family, floyds brother is now speaking out too, saying in that conversation he couldnt even get a word in. It was so fast. He didnt give me an opportunity to speak. It was hard. I was trying to talk to him, but he just kept pushing me off. Like, i dont want to hear what you are talking about. I just told him, i want justice. Were back now with cecilia vega. I want to show you a headline from the New York Times this morning. It reads, in days of discord a president fans the flames. How different is this president s leadership style from what were used to seeing from american president s in times of crisis . Reporter completely different from other president s, dan, not so different from what we have seen from President Trump in the past. Let me just quickly recap for you a couple of things weve seen this week. We had that threat to shoot american citizens, essentially in a tweet from the president when he said looting when the looting starts, the shooting starts. That was a reference to a 1960s era racist crackdown on black neighborhoods in miami in the face of widespread condemnation. He ultimately started to backtrack on that, but it took him 14 hours to do that. He said it had been misinterpreted. Cities burning across this country, the president held a rose garden event, he ended up not taking questions. He walked out without at all addressing what was happening around the country. Let alone in minneapolis. Hes called these protesters mobs and thugs, and youll go back a little bit, remember charlottesville, he said there were very fine people on both sides when we were talking about neonazi protesters there. Dan, what we have seen time and time again from this president is that when we were talking about moments of schism civil un this country, particularly like what were living through right now with great racial tension and pain from coast to coast, weve seen a president who frankly has fanned the flames and capitalized on division rather than unity. Were at such a difficult point in american history, between this and the pandemic. Cecilia, thank you. Cecilia vega weighing in from washington. Whit, over to you. Dan, while many protesters are calling for real genuine change theres growing concern some are just taking advantage of a chaotic situation. Abcs chief justice correspondent Pierre Thomas joins us now. Pierre, officials in minneapolis say about 80 of those arrested were from out of the state and attorney general barr is issuing a warning. Reporter barr is saying the people that come from out of state will be prosecuted at the federal level, but let me walk folks through who are in these crowds in minneapolis and some of these other major cities. The overwhelming majority of the protesters peacefully. The rioters include undisciplined locals. That may include younger people throwing debris and vandalizing. People who have criminal intent who want to steal and loot. Law enforcement Officials Say there are antigovernment operators from both the left and the right and people who are using antifastyle tactics. Warning that white supremacist might show up to frame black people as offenders. They want people to see this as a race war, whit. You have covered issues of Racial Injustice in this country for many years, but give us the significance of this moment and why it feels so different this time. Reporter in some ways this is what we have seen in recent years in these kind of moments. People are trying to exercise their right to free speech, to make change, and their anger is righteous. The root of all this is mr. Floyd and the way he died at the hands of police, unarmed and over a routine matter. This all stems from an allegation that floyd used counterfeit cash to illegally buy some cigarettes. Police werent responding to a violent crime. Not a shooting in progress. Not an assault. This is over counterfeit money and cigarettes and the man is dead and those images of how he died haunts us all. This is not the first time a black man has been seriously injured or killed in similar circumstances. Were still dealing with americas original sin, racism. People are using social media to solicit violence and encouraging people to go to places in real time and we have foreign governments pushing disinformation on to social media to sow more division. Now, Law Enforcement has to figure out whos behind the violence and simultaneously deal with these ongoing and vexing issues of race and policing. Not to mention earlier the backdrop of the pandemic. People dont necessarily have jobs or school to go back to, its kind of the perfect storm of pain and despair. Pierre thomas, thank you so much. We appreciate it. Pierre will be on this week later on with cecilia. George also has House Speaker nancy pelosi as well. Plus, he speaks with minnesota congressman ilhan omar. And he speaks with President Trumps National Security adviser robert obrien. All coming up on this week. For now, lets go back to eva in minneapolis. Whit, now back to a night of growing protests across the united states. Here in minneapolis, where the incident that sparked this rage happened, the minnesota National Guard was in place overnight to meet protesters. Abcs alex perez is also here in minneapolis with me. Alex, good morning to you. Reporter hey, eva, take a look at the scope of the damage here. Its not an exaggeration to say some parts of minneapolis right now look like a war zone. Now, unlike nights before last night authorities showed up with a full force, a Massive Force of manpower, they confronted protesters and arrested them. Overnight, clashes erupting on the streets of minneapolis. Police firing tear gas and rubber bullets at protesters violating the citys curfew. Met with the full force of the states National Guard. For the first time in 164 years, minnesotas governor mobilizing record force. The state capital surrounded by heavily fortified, armed minnesota guardsmen alongside state patrols. [ chanting ] local Law Enforcement announcing theyve been intercepting communications from extremist groups they believe are organizing protests using Peaceful Demonstrations as cover to cause deliberate mayhem. You have somebody who will go forward and break a window, or try to start a fire or something, then run back behind the people who are trying to peacefully protest. Use them essentially as human shields. Reporter the minneapolis mayor calling it domestic terrorism. There are so many outside influences that are using Peaceful Community protesters as prey. Reporter officials asking everyone to stay home so they can better separate the Peaceful Protesters from the agitators. As this heartbroken community is desperately trying to pick up the pieces. These people are tearing up our livelihood. This is the only place i can go to shop and now i dont have anywhere to go. I dont have anywhere to get there. Reporter and authorities here say that massive show of manpower is still in place, and at this point, they do not believe they will need federal troops to step in, and eva, i have to say, you know, we focus a lot on the Severe Damage because it is significant, but the other thing that is significant that is sometimes hard to transmit is the sense of pain and anguish in the air. It is palpable. People are sick and tired of being sick and tired. Eva . Alex, such a good point you make this morning. People are hurting. Guys, you see all these protests in city after city all across this country. One thing is clear its exactly what alex is talking about, people want something to change. Something has to change. Dan and whit. So hard to see the images of the destruction behind you, eva, but as alex put it, people are sick and tired of being sick and tired. I think theres an undercurrent of so much pain in history coursing underneath the events were seeing right now, and its just bubbling through. Eva, well talk to you in just a moment. First, we want to transition and get a check of the forecast with rob marciano. Rob, good morning to you. Good morning, whit. Good morning, everybody. Well turn our attention to the southwest that had a heat wave this week. It will dry the vegetation out. Little cooler now. Humancaused blaze spawned evacuations just outside of phoenix. Just over 1,200 acres now, and they brought in the air support to try to get a handle on it. Heres the low that kind of cooled things off. Strong cold front. 80plus mile per hour winds. Pushing the warm air into the midwest. The cooler air begins to sink into the inner mountain west, and warm air in the midwest. Good sunday morning. Ip lisa argen. The clouds here in santa cruz, later on today, theres cloud cover offshore keeping us mostly cloudy for your sunday and were going to warm it up midweek. Back to you. Beautiful backdrop. Rob, really appreciate it. Lets go back to eva in minneapolis right now. Eva . Hey, guys. I just want to show you where im standing right now. The smell of smoke in the air here is just so heavy, and all around me destruction. You can actually see that building behind me. Still smoking. We have another camera as well and we can switch to that. You can see more of the damage. This whole block just completely destroyed, and this is just one Street Corner in one city that is hurting this morning. Coming up on gma, we are going to talk to someone from this area who has personally experienced the loss of a loved one to Police Violence. And a plea for change from an athlete turned advocate against police brutality. Tennis star james blake joins us. Good morning america is sponsored by bank of america. This moment. Welcome back to gma on this sunday morning after a night of unrest nationwide, protesters taking to the streets in dozens of cities demanding change in the wake of the death of george floyd. Many demonstrations beginning as peaceful then descending into chaos, erupting in violence as crowds clash with police. Theres talk of outside agitators. Coming in to stir things up. Lets go back to eva who is there in minneapolis where all this started. Eva, good morning to you. Good morning, dan. The murder of george floyd here, the spark that ignited protests across the country. In minneapolis, there were protests again last night after days of violent protests, looting, arson and attacks on police, these protests were relatively under control, protesters were met with the full force of the states National Guard, mobilized in record force for the first time in 164 years. State officials here warning, some of the rioters are coming from out of state to perpetuate violence. Not protest the death of george floyd. Officials here asking everyone to stay home so they can better separate the Peaceful Protesters from the agitators. Joining me now is someone whos personally experienced the loss of a loved one to Police Violence, clarence castilles nephew Philando Castile was killed by a suburban st. Paul officer four years ago. Thank you for being with us this morning. As you watch the protests that are happening, the violence, the rioting, what goes through your mind . A lot of things go through my mind. The anger. The mistrust. The devastation of losing someone to Police Violence is horrible for everybody and it what happened to george floyd just brought back so many memories and the pain of seeing someone suffer at the hands of Law Enforcement like that. Your nephew was killed in 2016, just several miles from here. You have since become a community advocate. You know the community well. Why do you think this keeps happening . In my opinion, id think it keeps happening because those perpetrators of killing africanamerican men arent being held accountable the way they should be. Theyre not being punished for these crimes and it will continue to happen when theres no accountability. We have seen protests now happening all over the country, from coast to coast. Do you think that there is real change that is possible . There is change thats possible, if people start being held accountable for the wrongs that they do. We all start respecting one another and treated in a more humane way, africanamericans historically have been treated horribly for the last 500 years and this this riot, this type of protest is the result of us not being treated in a humane way. The injustice thats been going on and people have just had enough and this is how people react when they have had enough. We heard alex perez say earlier this morning, people are just tired of being sick and tired. Mr. Castile, thank you so much for being with us. We really appreciate it. And guys, i covered his nephews case back in 2016. I remember the protests and the outrage, and that is just one of the cases that is part of this exhaustion that weve talked so much about in the last few days that were now seeing spilling over, guys. Yes, its not just the george floyd case as horrifying as that was, it is decades and centuries of history before it thats as were seeing now, and as were saying now, is bubbling over. Eva, thank you for your excellent coverage this morning. Well be back with you throughout the show. Time to switch gears and get to the weather forecast. Rob marciano is in correction. Hes in connecticut. Robert, good morning again to you. Westport. So you got half of that right. It starts with west, and ends with the port. We got the beautiful American Flags behind us. I think we have the right to protest and stand up and act out to affect change and i hope the protesters also know the next opportunity to effect change is november when we can all get out and vote, and vote for leaders that represent us, and represent what we want and what we need to change. When your situation happened, you said you wanted to be a catalyst for change between police and the public. You even wrote a book, ways of grace stories of activism, adversity, and how sports can bring us together. What are your suggestions for change . Well, i think theres plenty of opportunity. There are so Many Community organizations, i think anyone can go and join, look up what you can do in your own community, whether its donating money, donating time, being a part of something, running for something. You can vote but you could also run for a local office and do something that can actually make a difference in your own community. I just wanted to do what i could as an athlete using my platform. So many athletes can reach a lot more people and have a direct connection to them. Lot of people dont have that connection with some of the politicians. The mayor of atlanta doing an unbelievable job connecting with the people of atlanta, but thats not common. Thats not every day to have those kind of connections. Athletes use those connections, use the power of social media. Use the power of being on tv. However you can do it. Make a difference in any sort of a positive way. I think you cant ignore that people are pushing for change with all of these protests happening across the country. Mr. Blake, thank you so much for being with us this morning.
