The National Guard is on standby and mayor breed said she understands the anger and frustration people are feeling after the death of george floyd. The unarmed black man who died in Police Custody in minneapolis but says the violence like you see here, which is happening at saks fifth avenue in union square in San Francisco, that is not the answer. What can we do now . How do we come together . How do we mobilize . How do we change things form the better . Because i know people are sick and tired of being sick and tired. Im sick and tired of being sick and tired. Mayor breed pointed out a protest outside city hall yesterday was quite peaceful. She says the city will continue to allow peaceful protests. San Francisco Police chief bill scott also addressed the Community Last night. Take a listen. As an africanamerican man and as the chief of police, i can relate to what people are feeling. I can relate to it. For the officers that are out there working their behinds off to do a job right now in the most difficult times, in most of their careers, if not our life time, i can relate to that, too. Chief scott says he understands people feel the need to get out and express themselves and he says officers will do their best to protect peaceful demonstrators, and says violence will not be tolerated. Looters targeted several stores here in the bay area. The action picked up as the sun went down yesterday. We saw multiple stores hit in emeryville, including best buy, uniqlo, h m and several others at the powell street plaza shopping center. There are no indications vandals had anything to do with the protest so that is important to make that distinction. Look at the video outside the best buy, people can be seen running out with tvs and other Electronic Devices in hand. Law enforcement officers arrive later and they did make some arrests. Its unclear how many people were taken into custody. Now to the bay Street Shopping Center in emeryville, where people grabbed piles of clothing from h m and seconds later moved to the store february in deer, uniqlo, stealing clothing from the stores there. Here in San Francisco a peaceful gathering started at noon yesterday as we mentioned, but you can see the protest turned from peaceful to violent when officers were getting in their patrol car there away from the crowd, as you can see, a little bit of a violent situation, people getting inside that car as you can see whats unfolding there. As they drove away a protester came into the frame, threw a device like a rock that broke the back window of the police car. Here as theyre driving away maybe we can see that video. There we go. You see it breaking there. This next video around 8 30 last night a crowd of protesters on Market Street. Police surrounding the area as looters broke into stores like swarovski crystals and main entrance on the westfield shopping center. Other stores like cvs and walgreens along Market Street were also hit by looter answer the stores were initially boarded up maybe because of coronavirus or maybe because of knowing the protests might be happening, that didnt stop crowds of people from entering though and looting. Demonstrators in San Francisco tell abc 7 news they protested in hopes to see a positive change towards the Africanamerican Community and to end police brutality. Im not sure if we have any sound there to show. Okay, no. Moving on though we want to get to this, this is very important news, a lot of you are messaging me about it yesterday a federal investigation is under way after that federal officer was shot and killed during the protest in oakland last night. Abc 7 news has learned now the officer has been identified, 53yearold Patrick Underwood. He lived in pinole. The shooting happened near the Ronald DellumsFederal Building near 12th and clay streets. Another fbi officer was wounded and investigators are calling it domestic terrorism. Very sad. Abc 7 News ReporterLauren Martinez has more on this story. Reporter friends and family are mourning the loss of 53yearold Patrick Underwood of pinole, a source confirmed with abc 7 underwood was the federal officer shot and killed friday night. An assassin cowardly shot two federal protective Service Contractors as they stood watch over a protest. Reporter the shooting happened at the Federal Building off clay street in oakland around 9 45. Patricks sister, Angela Jacobs underwood posted this on facebook my brother, dave Patrick Underwood, a federal officer, was murdered on 5 29 20 in oakland, california, while on duty during this violence must stop. A friend that knew patrick from middle school tweeted his name is Patrick Underwood and he also went by dave. He was a kind, compassionate, empathetic soul with a smile that could light up a room. Pat, this world is gonna miss you. A senior dhs official told abc 7 news the shooting of the two officers are related to the protests over George Floyds death, but the investigation is still in its preliminary stages. Its likely that there was a targeting of uniformed officers to the extent with which they were involved with our demonstration, were really not sure. Reporter the dhs is calling the deadly shooting an act of domestic terrorism. When someone targets a police officer, that is an act of domestic terrorism. Reporter federal Officials Say theyre seeing more violence during peaceful protests. Were interested in all groups, all violent groups, all extremist groups that are going to take advantage of individuals exercising their First Amendment right to do that peaceful protest, and turning it into something else. New video shows Oakland Police officers setting off flashbangs and using tear gas to disperse crowds as you can see, this was the scene at telegraph and 16th street last night. You can see the dozens of people there running on the streets, someone on the ground there, some protester, Police Detained several people and the department has not yet said why they were detained but a little bit of dramatic video there of that one protester there on the ground. Oakland police have released preliminary information about incidents during friday nights demonstrations. We kow they say as of now, 60 looters were detained for further investigation. 18 people were arrested by Oakland Police. Four people were arrested by outside agencies, and six Oakland Police officers were injured and seven officers from outside agencies were injured. The damage from friday night in oakland is really widespread. Weve seen everything from businesses to cars getting hit during that chaos on friday, and the mercedes there was being towed away on saturday afternoon as well. The chase bank across the street had its windows smashed along with dozens of other storefronts. Reporter oakland resident homer stafford was upset about the damage and the message sent by some protesters. All these cops are not racist cops. You know, we got a lot of racism, were going to live with it the rest of our lives, but come on, man, enough is enough. Reporter we found these neighbors scraping graffiti off the front of a bar on broadway. They believe the damage was not caused by locals. Most of the time not people from oakland. Its people taking advantage of a situation that is completely super serious right now. Reporter this is the honda dealership on auto road. 12 windows were broken. Across the city, damage could be in the millions of dollars. Mayor schaaf urging everyone to stay home in the future at this point, Oakland PoliceDepartment Says he t has no plans to enact a curfew across the city. In oakland, cornell bernard, abc 7 news. In the south bay, 38 arrests were made as protesters clashed with police. Those were the clashes on friday. The protest started out as peaceful before it went to highway 101, several drivers had their window s smashed. Eight patrol cars were vandalized, one officer taken to the hospital and several others suffered minor injuries after getting hit with rocks and bottles. Mayorly car dough joined volunteers cleaning up the graffiti left over from downtown. Horace Mann Elementary School on santa clara street some volunteers out as early as 5 00 a. M. Cleaning up. Weve had a few protesters from last night join us who said hey, we want to show this wasnt what the protest was about, were part of this community and dont like seeing this happen either the mayor also recognized a Community Member who said he couldnt help because he was on his way to work but did drop off pizza for the volunteers. The National Coalition of Police Unions including San Francisco, oakland and san jose is calling for peaceful protests. Police unions across the country released a joint statement saying what has happened does not reflect who we are as a cuntry. The statement says that George Floyds death was contrary to everything they have taught and abc 7 spoke with the president of the san jose Police Officers association who says violence and destruction is not the answer. [ bleep ] we support peaceful protests. We always have. We always will. What we witnessed yesterday in san jose started out peaceful, but it absolutely became violent and was a riot. He said that in order to have a dialogue, police need to be at the table. Target is Closing Stores all across the nation now because of these protests over the death of george floyd. The company says the closures are temporary. In the bay area, more than 20 stores are listed, including the store in walnut creek. There is an asterisk by one in oakland because it was the one that was heavily damaged during fridays protest and that one will be closed until further notice. Turning now to the weather, and it was a very active day yesterday in parts of the bay area, a storm rolled through the east bay in the afternoon, and it dumped heavy rain, a little bit of hail and people heard thunder and saw lightning as well. And abc 7 news viewer shared this video from rodeo, taken right around the same time as the video from walnut creek. Those are hailstones that are falling and we can get a better view of them there when a girl picks one up and holds it in her hand. Hail was also reported in danville this afternoon. We saw the potential with the low off the coast and i thought it was cool but north bay it was quiet, ad we didnt see much in the way of showers in the south bay, but we did add up it was some rainfall amounts to nearly threequarters of an inch underneath one of the heavy cells in the san ramon valley. Otherwise lighter amounts to 0. 01 in parts of the bay area. It was an exciting afternoon for some of you. You can see a crowd standing around someone who then throws an object to break through the front door there. That is in chinatown. Other stores like cvs and walgreens along market were also hit by looters last night and we can see that they were initially actually boarded up, those stores, not sure if it was for coronavirus or because of these planned protests but it didnt stop crowds there from those crowds of going in there, breaking those glass doors and then going in and looting. In the east bay, several stores were looted in emeryville throughout the night as well. People were coming out of best buy with Electronic Devices you could see, boxes of Electronic Devices. One of best buys vehicles was also set on fire. Also looters hit the bay Street Shopping Center, a uniqlo, h m, ross, they were all looted as well. Oakland mayor libby schaaf says the violence she saw friday night from protesters that that crossed the line and she did urge people to stay home. In the north bay, we showed you some video earlier of protests in santa rosa, also turned violent. Police stopped crowds from entering the downtown transit mall, but you ca see glass window panes on stores were broken. Officers there used tear gas to disperse the protesters after police were getting rocks and bottles thrown at them and last night Santa Rosa Police advised businesses to close early and for residents to avoid the downtown area. No word yet from the Police Department on how many people were detained or arrested. Nationally, lets go to washington, d. Is he disheartened to see it in areas frequented by families and children. Its right next to the stop signs so everyone who drives on this street has to stop here and has to see this. It emboldens the people on the fringe who are secretly racist, now they gain more people to be more plain about it.
