This played on for hours. It is the day after in oakland. Businesses are picking up the pieces after the protests over the death of george floyd took a dark turn. There was looting and arrests. But the damage has been done. Emotions still running high across the country as is the anger. Were seeing more protests tonight that have taken a violent turn. And a federal officer is dead in whats being called an act of terrorism. Investigators are look into whether his death is directly linked to the chaos that unfolded last night in oakland. Now, the action picked up as the sun went down in San Francisco as well as across the bay area in emeryville. There is now a curfew until 5 00 a. M. In San Francisco and Th National Guard has been put on standby. We saw multiple stores hit in emeryville including best buy, uniqlo, h m and others. There are no indications the vandals had anything to do with the protests. There was also a fairly large protest and looting situation in San Francisco. Abc 7 News Reporter luz pena is following these breaking stories. She joins us live from the newsroom. And luz, there is a lot to go over here. Reporter were seeing a lot of commotion, looting and vandalism coming out of emeryville and San Francisco tonight, where several stores have become the focus of Law Enforcement efforts. Lets start with this wild video from best buy in emeryville, where people can be seen walk out with tvs and other Electronic Devices in hand and simply driving away. On the side of the store you can see that one of the best buy vehicles up in flames as looters remained inside the store. Minutes later Law Enforcement arrived on scene and arrested between four to five people. Lets move on to the next video, to bay Street Shopping Center in emeryville. We can see a string of looting. Lets start with this vid yooif lage group of people walking out of this Old Navy Store with piles of clothing on them. Seconds later they moved on to the store next door uniqlo. Here we have video looters coming out of uniqlo and h m. You can see piles of clothing on the ground as more people walk in and out of these stores. Lets move on to the next video in San Francisco where a peaceful gathering began at noon. Two hours later as the crowds grew hundreds of people marched from civic center to Market Street chanting no justice no peace and say his name, george floyd. In this video we can see how protests began to turn from peaceful to violent when officers were getting in their vehicle away from this crowd. Even at one point we can see an officer pointing a nonlethal weapon to the crowd as they drive away. A protester comes into the frame later on with a device and threw that device to that car. Also in this next video that im going to show you around 8 30 p. M. We can see a crowd of protesters on Market Street. Police surrounding the area as looters broke into stores like swa rofsky. And then the main entrance of westfield mall also was in question there. Other stores like cvs and walgreens on Market Street were hit by looters tonight. We can see they were initially boarded up. That didnt stop crowds from walking in here and looting these stores. Now, going back to what we saw in emeryville, oakland mayor lily schaap said the violence she has seen crossed the line and urged people to stay home. Tonight San Franciscos police chief also had a personal message about these protests. Later on into our newscast i will have that s. O. T. For you guys. And also interviews with several protesters who say the actions of those looting tonight do not represent their message. The protests in San Francisco, they were protesting in San Francisco in hopes to send a positive message about the Africanamerican Community and, quote, an end to police brutality. Well, a federal investigation is under way after a federal officer was shot and killed during the protests in oakland last night. It all happened right near the ron dellums Federal Building. That is near 12th and clay streets. The fbi says another officer was wounded and investigators are calling it domestic terrorism. Abc 7 News Reporter Lauren Martinez has this story. Reporter friends and family are mourning the loss of 53yearold patrick underwoofd pinole. A source confirmed with abc 7 underwood was the federal officer shot and killed friday night. An assassin cowardly shot two federal protective Service Contractors as they stood watch over a protest. Reporter the shooting happened at the Federal Building off clay street in oakland around 9 45. Patricks sister, Angela Jacobs underwood, posted this on facebook. My brother, dave patrick underwood, a federal officer, was murdered on 5 29 20 in oakland, california while on duty during the riots. This violence must stop. Her spokeswoman told abc 7s dan noyes that miss jacobs would issue a statement about her brothers passing on sunday. She was too distraught to comment today. A friend that knew patric from middle school tweeted, his name is patrick underwood, and he also went by dave. He was a kind, compassionate, empathetic soul with a smile that could light up a room. Pat, this world is going to miss you. A senior dhs official told abc 7 news the shooting of the two officers are related to the protests over George Floyds death. But the investigation is still in its preliminary stages. Its likely that there was a targeting of uniformed officers to the extent with which they were involved with our demonstration were really not sure. Reporter the dhs is calling the deadly shooting an act of domestic terrorism. When someone targets a police officer, that is an act of domestic terrorism. Reporter federal Officials Say theyre seeing more violence during peaceful protests. Were interested in all groups, all violent groups, all extremist groups that are, again, going to take advantage of individuals exercising their First Amendment right to do that peaceful protest and turning it into something else. Oakland police have released preliminary information about other incidents at last nights demonstrations. 60 looters were detained for further investigation. 18 people were arrested by Oakland Police. Four people were arrested by outside agencies. Six Oakland Police officers were injured. Seven officers from outside agencies were also injured. The damage from last night in oakland is widespread. Weve seen everything from business to cars get hit during the chaos. The mercedes was being towed away this afternoon from a business there. Windows were smashed, and businesses were looted. Now comes the cleanup for some frustrated owners. Abc 7 News Reporter Cornell Barnard has the story. Im very saddened and sickened to talk about the events of last night. Mayor libby schaap stood alongside oakland Business Owners appealing for calm and denouncing violence friday night. We are sickened to wake up this morning to the destruction and the violence of our beloved oakland. And we want to make clear that this will not be tolerated. Reporter a sea of shattered glass covers much of downtown oakland. The cleanup almost overwhelming. Businesses big and small were targeted by vandals. The demonstration began peacefully on friday to protest the death of george floyd while in Police Custody in minneapolis. But it quickly changed. Fires were set and windows smashed. Vandals set fire to a car inside the showroom at mercedesbenz of oakland. The Service Manager says seven cars heavily damaged. Were already struggling with all the coronavirus thats going on. You know, the business doesnt need this. Reporter windows were smashed at this walgreens store. Looters rushed in to grab what they could. The chase bank across the street had its windows smashed, along with dozens of other storefronts. Check out this target store on broadway. It was trashed. Suspected looters were still inside on saturday morning until police arrived. Stop to me its sickening, its sad. Reporter oakland resident homer stafford was upset about the damage and the message sent by some protesters. All these cops are not racist cops. You know . Weve got a lot of racism. Were going to live with it the rest of our lives. But come on, man. Enough is enough. Reporter we found these neighbors scraping graffiti off the front of a bar on broadway. They believe the damage was not caused by locals. Most of the time its not from people who are from oakland. Its people who come in taking advantage of a situation that this is completely super serious right now. Reporter this is the honda dealership on auto road. 12 of its windows were broken. Across the city damage could be in the millions of dollars. Mayor schaaf urging everyone to stay home. In the future at this point Oakland Police Department Says it has no plans to enact a curfew across the city. In oakland Cornell Barnard, abc 7 news. That video so hard to watch. Demonstrators also stood outside the eden sheriffs station in san leandro. One group stood in a row Holding Signs along foothill boulevard this afternoon. More protesters could be seen Holding Signs at the corner of foothill and fairmont drive as the cars passed. To the south bay now, where 38 arrests were made as protesters clashed with police there. The protests started out as peaceful before the demonstration moved to highway 101. You can see several drivers had their windows smashed. The Police Department says eight patrol cars were also vandalized. One officer was taken to the hospital and several others suffered minor injuries after getting hit with rocks and bottles. And san jose mayor sam liccardo joined volunteers cleaning up graffiti from last nights chaos downtown. Some volunteers were out as early as 5 00 a. M. We had a few protesters from last night join us who said hey, we want to show this wasnt what the protest is about, were part of this community and we dont like seeing this happen either. The mayor also recognized a Community Member who said he couldnt help because he was on his way to work, but he did drop off pizzas for the volunteers. A National Coalition of Police Unions including San Francisco, oakland, and san jose is calling for peaceful protests. Police unions across the country have released a joint statement saying what has occurred does not reflect who we are as a country. The statement says that George Floyds death was contrary to everything theyve been taught. Abc 7 news spoke with the president of the san jose Police Officers association, who says violence and destruction are not the answer. We support peaceful protests. We always have. We always will. What we witnessed yesterday in san jose started out peaceful but it absolutely became violent and was a riot. Reporter he said that in order to have a Dialogue Police need to be at the table. Target is Closing Stores all across the country because of the protests over the death of george floyd. The company says the closures are temporary. In the bay area more than 20 stores are listed including the store in walnut creek. There is an asterisk by one in oakland because it was heavily damaged during fridays protest and it is closed until further notice. A curfew is in effect in los angeles tonight, and National Guard troops are being deployed there. Protesters were back in the streets today. Several police cars were torched as some protesters ignored authorities calls for peaceful demonstrations. Mayor garcetti said everyone must be off the streets until 5 30 tomorrow morning. Police arrested 533 people last night after stores were robbed, windows were smashed in, and fires were set. And demonstrations are taking place certainly across the country. These are scenes from minneapolis, seattle, new york city, and washington, d. C. Police in minneapolis fired tear gas into crowds, breaking curfew on their fifth day of protests. In seattle interstate 5 has been shut down both ways through the downtown area to block off demonstrators. New york city mayor bill de blasio is asking for calm as people returned to the streets for a third night, smashing windows and seth at least one car on fire. And outside the white house protesters smashed and spraypainted a secret service car. We are tracking the coronavirus tonight as well. The Sonoma County sheriff has said he will not enforce the Health Officers latest order. Now the District Attorney is stepping in. That story in about 25 minutes. The outrage erupting after derek chauvin, the white former Minneapolis Police officer, was seen in this disturbing video pressing his knee into floyds neck for more than nine minutes. Please. Last Night Protests in the Nations Capital turning violent. Today protesters once again gathering near the white house. Some in minneapolis see violence as their only option. Weve got to do it the violent way then thats what were going to do because were going to get answers one way or another. Reporter but city officials were quick to point out some of those arrested are from out of state. Those folks who are agitating and inciting advantage of the pain, of the hurt, of the frustration, of the very real and legitimate sadness that so many of our Community Members feel. A storm rolled through the east bay at about 2 00 in the afternoon. It dumped heavy rain and a little bit of hail, as you can see. People heard thunder and saw lightning as well. It came down so hard some of the streets flooded in walnut creek. Now, an abc 7 news viewer shared this video taken right around the same time as the video from walnut creek. You can see there hailstones falling. We can get a better view of them when the woman there just picks one up, holds one in her hand. Hail also was reported in danville this afternoon. So the big question is is that it for this weather system . Lets check in knew with meteorologist drew tuma. Drew . Yeah, it was really an active day, especially earlier this morning. We had numerous lightning strikes, especially in the north bay, and then that weather shifted into the east bay, into the afternon with those thunderstorms you saw in that video. Hail, heavy downpours, flooding. That storm system has now moved out to the east, and calmer conditions have prevailed tonight. Live doppler 7 right now giving the active sweep. It was tracking all the action earlier. Tonight it is showing you a pretty quiet picture as the storms, they have moved out. Numbers right now, its still mild and its still pretty muggy out there. Were at 62 in oakland. The same in san jose. Down to 59, though, in the city. 61 in san ramon and napa coming in at 59 degrees. Heres live doppler 7 along with satellite. The story we are tracking. An area of low pressure that has moved into Northern California today brought several thunderstorms. You can see tons of lightning, especially early this morning between 3 00 a. M. And 6 00 a. M. I know a lot of you were telling me on social media you heard the thunder, you saw the lightning. It woke you up earlier this morning. And then we had another round, a second round of thunderstorms moved through the east bay. Now you can see a lot of that action is out of here. And we can see dryer skies moving in. So overnight tonight numbers, theyre not falling too far from where they are right now. Well stay in the low to mid 50s. It still remains on the muggy side. And well hang on to a lot of that cloud cover and fog along the coastline. Now, tomorrow it is a quieter day. There are no storms in the forecast. However, well hang on to a lot of that cloud cover. So it will remain partly sunny throughout much of our sunday tomorrow. And temperatures will top out in the low 60s along the coast. A lot of low 70s along the bay shoreline. Our warmest spots tomorrow will get into the upper 70s. So highs to round out the week about 65 in the city, about 69 in oakland. 75 in san jose. 78 the high in antioch. 70 in san rafael. Theres really no intense heat to finish out the weekend tomorrow. However, we are tracking warmer weather moving in over the next several days. Tracker temperatures by monday. Well begin to see our warmest spots climb into the low if not mid 80s. But its really tuesday and wednesday. Well find hot weather moving inland once again, going back into the 90s. 70s and 80s around the shoreline. It looks like the heat will around here midweek. Cnn cameras captured people looting this store. Stores at the grove outdoor mall were also looted and several vehicles were set on fire. L. A. Has enacted a curfew as have the cities of Beverly Hills and west hollywood. Chrissy teigen is donating 200,000 to post bail for protesters across the country. And tonight oaklands mayor libby schaaf says the violence she saw last night from protesters crossed the line and urged people to stay home. In San Francisco we spoke to several protesters who said looters are sending the wrong message. In the crowd we met Michael Davis who lost her 16yearold brother 11 years ago. She said tonight she protested with him in mind. He was killed by san pablo Police Officers, and theyre still working with force. In san pablo, california. And its just you know, its unacceptable. But my brother was only 16 years old. He did not live his life. He didnt have a chance at life. The police. Wow. Im so sorry. Yes. So george floyd, it brought up a lot of like a lot of old and sad emotions for me. A lot of hard feelings for me to deal with. But i just decided to come out and protest. Its time. And a lot of people on the internet. Im on the internet a lot. But i come out. That were here again in 2020 seeing another black man being killed by the police on camera, which is similarly to the mario woods case here in San Francisco, were telling people to not be silent, to come out, to protest, to be heard. Reporter San Francisco police chief scott sent a personal message to the community. As an africanamerican man and as a chief of police i can relate to what people are feeling i can relate to it. But the officers that are out there working their behinds off to do a job right now in the most difficult time of their career if not our lifetime, i can relate to that too. We know people are hurting. Im hurting. Officers are hurting. My family is hurting. We know what that feels like. We understand as a Police Department people need to get out and express themselves. Several protesters we spoke to tonight said the actions of those looting do not represent their message. Here is another look at some of the violence in San Francisco tonight. Looters got into saks fifth avenue in union square. Police arrived to confront them. At least one person was seen on video throwing something at an officer. There appears to have been a board of a window that was torn down. As we mentioned earlier, a curfew will be in effect in San Francisco beginning at 8 00 tomorrow night. Mayor london breed said, the city and the police will support peaceful protests as we did all day today. We cannot tolerate violence and vandalism. Now is the time to go home. Well, todays launch of the Spacex Dragon capsule from Kennedy Space center marks the first time astronauts have launched from u. S. Soil in nearly a decade. And a missouri man has tested positive for the coronavirus after a Memorial Day Weekend Party at the lake of the ozarks. Viral videos showed large crowds with little social distancing. The Sonoma County sheriff maintains he will not enforce the countys health order. He says that come monday his deputies will only educate the public. Earlier this week the Public Health officer halted further reopening of the economy because of coronavirus outbreaks at three workplaces. The Sonoma County District Attorneys office says the sheriffs position is at odds with other Law Enforcement agencies and that charging decisions lie within the d. A. Now, the Office Released a statement saying, we are tired, scared, and worried but we are resilient and we must be vigilant. Rather than arguing about rules and orders lets keep the focus on saving lives. As the bay area deals with the coronavirus, were seeing some ugly racism targeting asians. Com as the bay area deals with the coronavirus pandemic, we have seen at times some ugly incidents where hate is the virus. The latest case of discrimination popped up in san mateo and started as graffiti that then took on racist undertones. I noticed it for as long as weve lived here. Reporter the graffiti spotted in the bay meadows neighborhood and along de anza boulevard in san mateo is so crude we had to blur most of it out. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. It started off with just generic graffiti and then it got more racist. Reporter dennis has been documenting the hateful graffiti in dozens of photos since last year, which show phrases like china disease, go home china and more. He is disheartened to see it in areas frequented by families and children. Its right next to the stop sign, so everyone who drives on this street has to stop here and has to see this. Reporter given the timing of recent tweets from the president targeting china, dennis and others in his neighborhood are afraid of what could happen next. Its very unfortunate. It just emboldens the people who are on the fringe who are secretly racist, and now they feel more power to be more plain about it. Reporter San Mateo Police have been responsive, getting the graffiti cleaned up within a matter of days after its reported. However, residents still want to know what else is being done.
