Sure. All right. So generally from the start, you felt like it was a sense of unity, if you will, and a peaceful statement, and that has not changed throughout the afternoon, throws from what youve seen in front of San Jose City hall, right . Thats what weve seen from sky 7 yeah, not at this end. We know there were a couple of windows that were broken out down at 101, and certainly the Police Department is not going to tolerate that kind of damage and so theyll step in those situations. So as long as the protesters remain peaceful, police will give them space to the that. But if it gets if it turns in any way that they intend to move in a little bit, try to stamp that out. Yeah. Absolutely. Our department understands that part of their responsibility is to protect the First Amendment and facilitate peaceful protest. So theyre going to take a very measured approach and make sure that the protest is peaceful. And as long as it, well be fine. And if its not, there is not going to be any tolerance for violence. Mayor sam liccardo, thank you very much for coming on. We appreciate it. Well stay in touch with you as the evening progresses. Thanks, sam. Thanks, dan, thanks, kris. Thank you. Looking on the left side of the screen, kristen, earlier pictures. And this is one of the scenes you talked about. Locked arms in front of the police car. And on the right is a live picture here at city hall in san jose. And the majority of the folks are now at San Jose City hall. Now we are expecting more action tonight from oakland, the city hall there and police depantiod activities there to begin in terms of protesting the death of george floyd. Dan, i also wanted to point out you know, mayor liccardo mentioned that use of force report that the city just got. In tweeting about that, chief eddie garcia said something that i thought was pretty profound. He says we are not perfect. We will make mistakes. Yes not claiming victory. But this department along with others across the country are doing the best to move the needle in a positive direction. And thats a great point from the chief. And that is i suppose incrementally. But at any given moment, there could be one officer who makes a mistake or who acts out of turn, and who ignites the kind of unrest were seeing, you know, here around the country, because of what happened to oh, look. There is some running going on there, and it appears police have fired something. There is some i saw a poof of smoke. And now people are dispersing from santa clara street there. Yeah, i dont see any smoke. I saw a little puff. There is a little puff. That doesnt look like anything police. Oh, oh. Oh no. This is i dont know. But this is what we did not want to see. Theyre just picking up some protesters and helping them run out of the way, it looks like. Okay. But it definitely logistics to be more tense now after an hour and a half of police and protesters just being in that same intersection. Near each other now it does okay. It doesnt logistic like tear gas fired because that would continue. Thats not enough smoke coming out of a tear gas canister that would continue for several minutes. So i dent know what that was, if that was something from police or something from a protester. But kristen, to your point, and larry is with us as well, larry, as this thing goes on in the heat and people get a little more restless, police get a little more frustrated, protesters get a little more frustrated, there is always the chance that things get a little chippy and things get out of control. Dan, weve seen this in years past, not so worst in these situations. We saw that in minneapolis and i just hope i actually was hopeful and producers tweet at the moment where the driver and the protesters came together. I was hoping that we could get through the day and everybody could just stay as calm as possible and just look. If youre frustrated by what happened in minneapolis, what avenues for protests are there when you look at a situation like this . So people naturally take to the streets. Dan, you remember a few years ago when it seemed routine almost every night. I dont know if thats mace or im seeing puffs of smoke here. Yes. Well have to get that might be what it is just to disperse people. Go ahead, zbla. There just arent a lot of means to protest to get peoples attention effectively. Maya, who was on twitter and called in, as we see people raising their arms because they dont want to get shot at with anything. But this feels like their only means of getting the attention that they desire to show their fustration and feel like justice is going to be at least heard and hopefully served in their minds. You know, the other thing, larry and christian, that we should be mindful of, certainly, of the protests and oakland and as we watch this, you know, most good people come out to protest and make their points heard. But as we saw many times in berkeley, the, quote, unquote, professional protesters showing up in these gatherings with the expressed purpose of inciting some violence and provoking police to respond. So we have to be mindful that sometimes the protesters sort of infiltrated by the more militant protester to try to cause more trouble and to raise the intensity level and provoke police into responding. All right. But this is the first sign of some clashing going on in san jose on the left. On the right were showing you a live picture from minneapolis. Live chopper shot there. If we can try to see whats happening there. As you know, there has been a lot of unrest in minneapolis in the past few nights. Weve seen police stations pol burning, breaking in and vandalism activity in stores. Weve seen a lot more unrest there, even the arrest of a cnn news reporter, producer, and photographer. But thats whats happening right now, another protest in minneapolis. This one seems to be fairly controlled at the moment. But here on the left in san jose, you are starting to see some clashes and more firing. What do you think that is . Could be bean bags sometimes they use. Looks like theyre firing toward the ground at the moment, not at the people, maybe to just back them off, let them know you see the officer pointing something at the feet of the protesters. To sort of paraphrase what mayor sam liccardo from san jose was just saying, anger and protests over injustice is always okay. Violence is never okay. Police in san jose from what the mayor tells us will be very tolerant of protesters exercising their First Amendment rights, but theyre not not not tolerate vandalism or zblienvio we have some items being thrown in the last few minutes. It looks like in Response Police are firing some, you know, whether its mace or bean bag or some tear gas, i dont think its tear gas, but theyre trying to get people to disburse and back off because things are starting to be thrown. People are running away at the corner of santa clara street in san jose off 101 where today protesters had a peaceful blockade on the freeway, shutting off the freeway 101. Now that theyre off the freeway, the situation is on the street and pretty much peaceful until just and its still mostly peaceful, but getting more tense for sure in the last few minutes. One of the things we should point out, because throughout the coverage weve been talking about the motivation of the protesters and how we got to this point. But put yourself in the shoes of the officers whose job it is to defend san jose. They had nothing to do with anything that occurred in minneapolis. But think about how scary this situation has to be when you have a large group of protesters, you dont know the motivation of everybody involved, and yet im sure theyre under instructions not to do anything to incite any kind of violence. So they have to be as restrained as possible in the face of hundreds of people who are obviously really agitated. And so we shouldnt forget that, you know, they have a tough job. They have a very difficult job. As you pointed out earlier, dan, even if the majority of Police Officers may be doing the right thing, it only takes one, in this case, it could take four thousands of miles away to put people here in jeopardy. So i think we should just make the point that this is difficult. Very good point. Very difficult for the police as well, of course, because they are obviously right on a high wire trying to control the streets and trying not to escalate this further and causing any more problems. San jose supervisor dave is on the phone. Give us your thoughts ooh, ooh. Theres fighting now. Sorry, dave. One protester fighting with police. This is what you dont want to see, of course. Okay, dave, i dont know if youre watching your television, but this is what obviously you dont want to see tonight. Yeah. No. Ive been monitoring whats going on mostly with my ears listening to reports. You folks are doing a tremendous job of, you know, narrating what is happening for those who are sheltering in place. Obviously were in a very stressful jittery time. Unemployment is high, people are struggling with the pandemic in any number of ways. And suddenly, you know, you have another incident of this kind of civil rights strife going on, opening up scars, opening up wounds once again. And of course these are issues that have been hidden for a long time, this type of issue. When the Information Age as fast as information travels now with everyone carrying a camera, everyone carrying some kind of a device and a sound system all over the country, people are seeing things that most of them had read about in books but never saw in person. It brings out a lot of outrage and were fortunate thus far, you know, not to say that there cant be more violence or much more acting out in this community, but that we have a very, very disciplined police force here in the city of san jose, just like your on our deputies in the county to back them up. They are trained in every kind of deescalation tactic you can imagine. As a form vice mayor of san jose, i know that. I was in the command room a couple times when officers were being instructed. I talked to Police Chiefs ongoing during these kinds of situations. Believe me, they are orchestrating and choreographing, using their powers to deescalate, and i think thats a good example for Police Forces across the country as how you should respond, unless, you know, the officer is approached with, you know, potential deadly force or serious force, violent force. So were also fortunate we have a community here thats been boycotting, protesting tennis is 1960s, huge protests and rallies. So you got to hope that people continue to use nonviolent tactics. Theres a large part of our population that knows how to do that. Of course theres going to be bad actors who try to create violence where none should exist. Dave . Are you able to see our sky7 shots right now . No, im not. Although i could change that very quickly. If you wouldnt mind, you know, as vice mayor of san jose, i know you are intensely familiar with police procedures. What is it, educate me on what is it they might be firing. Weve seen these puffs of smoke and it seems to be used as a dispersion tactic to keep people away from the police line. If you could see what that is and educate me on that, island greatly appreciate it. Yeah. I wish i couldi vehe seen now a see them, you know, firing. I dont know if theyre firing firing. It does not look like theyre firing tear gas, which i think is probably a good thing. That can be very jur jur jur jur people. The most important thing theyre doing is maintaining a line that is not facetoface confrontational. You can see what happens on your split screen when that happens. So direct escalation. Its a problem. Can you tell what that is having seen some footage of that now, what theyre firing there . No. I dont know specifically what it is, but i assume yeah. I assume theyre trying to fire into t fire into the space theyre trying to fire into officers and nondeadly force, but in the space between the officers and the protesters to make sure that they can keep that space clear. Thats clearly what it looks like they are doing, dave, firing on the ground at the feet of the protesters, not at the protesters themselves. Dave let me ask you the same question i asked mayor liccardo aimt a few minutes ago. When you look at the video of george floyd and the police officer, his conduct, what goes through your mind . What goes through my mind is the fact that, you know, in a country as large as we are in right now with the Civil Rights Movement thats never really revolv resolved since the civil war ended, theres deep, deep wounds, theres still deep bigotry among a minority of our population. And unfortunately sometimes that evidences itself even in good institutions like our Police Departments and like you said, in this day and age where information is traveling so fast and so graphically, theres no hiding it anymore. You know, people can only handle so much of that reality before, you know, outrage and protests and the democratic process starts to set in. Its going to be a painful advance to the next level of civil rights in this country because these wounds are very deep. A painful advance, thats a good way to describe it. It occurs to me as well david, that this is a reminder of what happened in minneapolis. We had a couple strange months. You made a great point that we frankly should have made, that people have really been stressed out by job loss, loss of income, businesses closed down. Its been a very challenging time and then this happens. But it occurred to me, as we skuf discussed here earlier, that so many in the country had been united in this shared experience in the shutdown and protecting one another from the coronavirus. And then this incident in minneapolis shakes us back into the reality that, well, were not we still have real issues in this country to solve. It was sort of a bucket of cold water, i think, to remind us that theres still deep problems. Yeah. Everybody is doing their part. Everyone is doing their part whether regardless of ethnicity or race or status or income level. I think we feel that. We see that in our communities, certainly here in Santa Clara County where theres been this heroic response by essentially 2 Million People to the pandemic. And then something happens like what you saw in minneapolis and justifiably theres a reaction that that would not have happened to a white person. We are all in this together when were fighting the pandemic, but are we all in this together when were trying to move the Civil Rights Movement forward, when with her trying to fight for equity and justice for people of color . And its a huge question. And i think everybody whos really been honest with themselves would say we dont see the evidence of that kind of use of force, excessive use of force and violence being exhibited when a white person, a white suspect is involved. So its its a deep wound. No doubt there are deep wounds that will take time to heal. But right now what were seeing now is a disturbance, a man having thrown some shopping carts and things being thrown at the police line. And supervisor is anything you would like to say to the public or the protesters standing there facing the officers, what would you like to say to them . I would like to say to them to remember what we learned from dr. Martin luther king at selma. Remember what we learned from Bobby Kennedy when he spoke immediately after the assassination of dr. Martin luther king jr. Remember what cesar chavez told us right here in san jose. The only justifiable thing to do under these circumstances, and violence begets more violence. Stay calm, stay tranquil. You do have elected officials that are going to stand for you and with you. And the Justice System will prevail here, but do not engage in violence, please. Well said, dave Santa Clara County supervisor. Well stay in touch you. Youre looking at live sky7 coverage of the george floyd protest in san jose. There have been some increasing skir mishz here a skirmishes. Something we had not seen here to fore until the last 20 minutes, last half hour, are protests directly clashing with a line of police shouting at them, kind of in their face, and being a little bit more pointed and assertive with police. Some perhaps trying to provoke the police. Larry, we talked about what an you made the point what an incredibly difficult job it is to try to keep order and not let things flare out of control in youre a police officer. Not easy to do. And consider, dan, its because were into almost the summertime here, its going to stay light out for another few hours. And so its likely that this will continue for some considerable length of time, which means the level of agitation is going to possibly get ratcheted up as we have more and more of these showdowns with a line of police and a line of protesters. All we can do, really, is hope that outside of the one incident we saw earlier where there was a few punches thrown that this doesnt escalate and get really ugly as we saw in minneapolis. But really nobody knows how this is going to unfold. The one thing that weve seen in the past few years because weve covered of number of these, is that with the advent of social media, the protesters can basically turn on a dime and go to another location and start in another spot. So thats also something that plays and is a factor in these situations. I want to just take a moment to go to a tape we had from earlier where a reporter with our abc facilitate in minneapolis was interviewing George Floyds fiancee at the moment that she found out that derek chauvin, the former police officer, was arrested and charged with murder. Lets listen to that. Oh, boy. I cant believe i just said a few minutes ago that this is a piece of justice, this is the first piece and it needed to be done. Its time now. Now go get the other ones if they need to be locked up. Its time. Is this peace . What is this, courtney . But it helps. But not yet. Shes obviously distraught. Thats couynert George Floydse. The tv station kstp says ross was about to go to minneapolis down to lake street to help clean up businesses that had been looted. She says thats what her late fiance would have done. She also called for peace saying, quote, we need to rise up in peace today for him. Thats what floyd would want. Larry, thank you for sharing that piece of videotape. Its a great point that she makes. Theres this woman being arrested now. She was for the last few minutes right in front of Police Officers we saw from the helicopter. Now evidently being put into custody, as you can see. To the point that dave cortese made and dr. Kings teaching of civil disobedience, but peaceful protest, you know, you wonder if the protesters heard that this is what george floyd would want, peaceful protest if those words would resonate with them. For the most part this has been peace in san jose today by far, by and large. But a couple of incidents. As you point out, larry, its friday night, its warm out, its summertime, and theres still several hours left before dark. So we may be here for quite some time. I think thats likely the case. Just watching these pictures, and i can just feel the angst building inside of me because im seeing more and more of these potential confrontations. As you said, you have all these elements with the coronavirus people quarantining, staying at home, so many have lost their jobs, they feel financial stress, they feel frustration, they see video of a man whos pleading for his life, ends up dying. Then four days to charge and then some would argue, undercharging with a thirddegree murder charge in addition to manslaughter. All of this stacked on top of each other. Its unfortunately ripe for outbursts as were seeing this afternoon. As we pull back here, sky7, you can see the police line and the protests on the other side of the line. Its hard. Its hard for people to contain themselves at this moment, but youre right, george floyd would want a peaceful protest. Hopefully thats what well get for the rest of the night. But this is happening in other cities as well. You talked about i saw a confrontation on twitter that took place outside the white house today. There are protests currently taking place in new york city. Well have one later tonight in oakland. And the law of averages unfortunately suggest that there could be trouble. You know, larry mentioned protests. On the right side of the screen is live in atlanta, georgia. We think outside the cnn building. As you can see, a number of people there. We cant see how many exactly because its not an aerial shot, its a ground shot. This is atlanta, georgia. Protes protesters standing outside cnn. I wonder if some of them are also standing in solidarity with the reporter, omar jimenez, who was covering the protests yesterday when he was arrested along with his producer and then cameraman. Of course the reporter also being black and latino descent. You could see him on camera saying im a reporter. And he was completely peaceful and they took him into custody even though he said, you know, ill do and be wherever you want me to be. Could be why theyre in front of the cnn building. This is christian. Its a good point. As you look live on the left side of your screen here at home in san jose and on the right, again, atlanta, georgia, there are protests today all around the country. Minneapolis, of course, the epicenter of this Current Crisis involving a police and an africanamerican, but also protests planned tonight at home at 8 00 in oakland. Many other cities as well have seen protests the last couple of days and are seeing them this evening. Including washington, d. C. , outside of the white house on pennsylvania avenue. For a fullscreen shot of whats happening in san jose, weve seen two people now that ive counted arrested. One got into a fairly significant scuffle with police, punches thrown and then was thrown on the ground and taken away and a woman who was shouting at police for some time kind of right up in their faces. She was arrested a few minutes ago and taken away in handcuffs. What you want to see is folks keeping their distance and standing, facing the police, that is great. You dont want to see anyone go up to them on purpose to provoke action. Police have ben really stoic in not reacting to whatever things are being said at them. If things are being thrown and weve seen some of that going onme onment. I dont know if we decided what that was, but it was basically to say keep away, a little poof something, protecting the perimeter or the no mans land between the police and the protesters. We havent gotten confirmation on exactly what it is, but we can understandou
