Beloved playwright and pioneering aids activist larry kramer has died at the age of 84. Kramer galvanized the Gay Community in the early 1980s with a raucous confrontational campaign for response to the aids crisis that helped shift National Health policy. In 1981, kramer founded the Gay Mens Health Crisis here in new york, the worlds First Service organization for people with hiv. The group kicked him out just a year later over his aggressive approach. I do not believe that you get attention in any other way. You do not get more with honey than with vinegar, you just dont. I threaten you. Make [ bleep ] history president reagan, your son is gay shortly after leaving Gay Mens Health Crisis, kramer founded a much more militant group, act up kramer took on dr. Anthony fauci starting back in 1984. Ten years, no drugs, how long are we having to wait for these things, tony . Kramer and dr. Fauci eventually became friends and allies, with kramer even earning praise from his former adversary. Both dr. Fauci and kramer would later appear on nightline back in august of 2001. Together the activists made significant advances. They convinced the government to shorten the time for drug approvals, and they made it possible for people with lifethreatening illnesses to volunteer for clinical drug trials. These things now have become Second Nature with how we deal not only with hiv aids but with other diseases. It was larry who started the thinking that you challenge and question everything when it comes to the lifeanddeath situation that youre in. Youve gone, larry, from as an author, essayist, and playwright, kramer was most notably hailed for his 1985 play the normal heart. Reporter according to court documents, gibb told police 8yearold jj was not staying with her, then called back several days later claiming vallow and daybell had asked her to lie and say he was. Gibb said she was there when vallow met daybell, author of religious books at an event in utah. Though both were married, she says they hit it off. I dont know why they keep trying to make robots happen, lets not. Not a fan of robots . Maybe youre a fan of alligators. We saw one apparently in venice, florida that thought it saw some turtles on the front porch. It did not see turtles on the front porch, it was a plaque of turtles. Apparently this alligator was chomping down on it, on this womans porch. The ring doorbell camera captured it. The animals are getting bold. They sure are. His muscles had to be paralyzed at one point to conserve oxygen. He couldnt believe the sendoff he received from hospital staff when he was discharged. So have we learned any lessons from the last three months . Dr. Eisenman, thank you for joining us. The u. S. Death toll from the coronavirus has surpassed 100,000. I want to ask you about how we got to this point. Can you walk us through the response during the early stages back in january and february and some of the lessons that came in hindsight . We closed the borders back in january. And we had february to prepare. And we did not use that time. We did not use it, and we lost our ability to prepare. Thats our second lesson, which is that its not just what you do, its when you do it. We failed to get testing up and running. We failed to get our hospitals prepared. We failed to get ppe ready. We failed to get our ventilator capacities up. We sidelined our scientists. And so im not so sure that weve learned those lessons, frankly. We still dont seem to have a National Strategy for what might come in october. And dr. Anthony fauci on wednesday struck a more optimistic tone, saying we might have a vaccine by the end of the year. Meanwhile, a new poll shows that 49 of americans say that they would get the vaccine when it becomes available, but 31 arent sure, and 20 flatout said no. Many citing safety concerns. How optimistic are you about our race for a vaccine and the impact that it will have . First of all, it has to be said that Anthony Fauci is one of the worlds most respected scientists. So far be it for me to disagree with him. But a vaccine by early 2021 is ambitious and a little hard to believe. You know, we need to do the safety trials. And dr. Fauci says they might begin in july. And usually we need a year to know that its safe and effective. And so that gets us into july of 2021. The challenge is that if you dont have peoples trust, theyre not going to take the vaccine. Were already hearing that with the numbers youve just cited. With people saying theyre not sure theyre going to take the vaccine, we really have to make sure that its effective. And all the chips have to fall into place to make sure that its safe and effective before people are going to turn out to use it. Trust is definitely the key, and dr. Eisenman, we all know the benefits of wearing a mask to prevent the spread of the virus are clear, but many people are hesitating to wear them, especially as the weather gets warmer. What do you think can be done to encourage people to follow guidelines and wear a mask . Right. So i think we in Public Health have led to some of that confusion. Early on we said that people should not wear masks and they should be reserved for health care workers. Now were saying you should wear a mask because theres so many asymptomatic people who are infected and that the mask is a opysicalarer to spreadalnkhailwe like were going back to normal, which means that to them that we dont need the mask, when in fact, it means we need the mask even more. Our thanks to dr. Eisenman. About the Colonial Penn program. Here to tell you if youre age 50 to 85, and looking to buy Life Insurance on a fixed budget, remember the three ps.
