Congestion, and consider servicing fewer customers each day or expanding operating hours. Employees and customers must both wear face coverings during haircutting and other closecontact hair service. No eyelash, brow waxing, or facial services are allowed. So the closest counties around the bay area approved by the state to reopen hair salons and barbershops at this point are napa, sonoma, and solano county. Alameda, contra costa county, marin, monterey, San Francisco, santa clara counties have not started the process or are still in talks to move into phase twob. Joining me to talk about salons is patrick evan, patrick evan salon in San Francisco. Hey, patrick. How are you . Good, thank you. Youre waiting on the county of San Francisco to give you the green light. The governor did say that even though the state is permitting this, 11 counties are not there yet, San Francisco one of them. But you took a quick look i should say detailed look, extelines. What is your reaction . You know, i think the guidelines are reasonable. I think theyre there to put people peoples safety first. I think they will be although its going to be a big adjustment to comply with some of the Different Things like social distancing and staggering appointments, thats going to be a pretty big change for us. I think its manageable and doable. Okay. Can you talk about the ones that you looked at and instantly thought, thats not doable, we cant do that one . I dont think theres anything that we cant do. I definitely think that well be able to comply with everything. I think that because we run a pretty busy salon, its going to be an interesting thing as far as the waiting for appointments. Doing that outside is going to be probably the protocol that were going to have to adhere to. We plan on managing traffic flow through the salon, to the salon, by monitoring the front door so that when we let people in, were only having one person at a time using the elevator, then change the exit from the salon to go down the back stairs, unless somebody needs to use the elevator to make it so that we can social distance in the tighter corridors. I think thats probably our biggest challenge is trying to manage that flow and have a reasonable way for clients to wait for appointments. What about any infrastructure changes, things that youd actually need to construct or build to make social distancing a little easier or ensure that theres some barrier between people, things like that, removing chairs . For sure. We moving chairs, we have 5 1 2 feet between each station. Were a little shy between each station. So what weve decided to do is use every other station. Thats going to give us 11 feet between each station. So thats going to create quite a bit of space between clients and stylists. Then also physical barriers like sneeze guards at the front desk on both sides. We have two front desks. So sneeze guards for that. Then removing the dishes, sorry, not dishes, the selfserveelfse refreshment area. Thats all going to be gone too. Now in reading the guidelines, it seems to me that any service that cannot be performed without touching the face would not be allowed. So which services could you not provide right now, then . Were a fullservice hair salon. We specialize in just doing hair services. So everything that we do falls out of that category. My wife, who owns artisan eyelashes, is in that category for sure because they specialize in eyelash extensions. Theyre going to have to wait it out, unfortunately. But for us, we dont have any services that are going to be prohibited at the moment. Like hair coloring . All that can be done with a mask on at all times . Hair coloring can be done with a mask. You can use surgical tape to if we need to remove the straps, we can use surgical tape. Weve also got some disposable masks that are individually wrapped in wrappers that we can give to clients to use our mask instead if they are using a mask that they dont want to have any stainage on it. I dont think there will be an issue with being able to do any of the services that we have with masks. What are your hairstylists telling you . Are they concerned about being exposed . Do they havefy hesitancy coming back . I think everybody its kind of a mixed bag. I think everybody that works with us, theres mixed feelings, including myself. Were all feeling, i think, excited to be back to the craft that we love and enjoy and be back to our customers. I think theres always going to be apprehension until theres a vaccine for this, you know, that coming back is going to have some element of risk. I think that we can do the best we can to mitigate that. But i think thats going to stay for the foreseeable future. But for the most part i think many of my stylists, not all of them, are excited to get back. Have you lost stylists to counties that have moved more quickly and opened up already . Not that i know of. I dont think so, no. We have colleagues that have seen salons that have paper taped over their windows. Do you have thoughts on whether or conjecture if there are people inside in defiance, on the downlow, to survive . You hear rumors about things like that. I think thats i think that is its worth the wait, just to wait till the right time to be able to do this. I think theres no reason to take risks for hair thats going to be super unnecessary like that. And i think that, you know then again, you know, we all have different financial situations that were in. I try not to pass judgment on others for doing whatever they feed to do to survive. But at the same time, thats not for us. I want to ask you, i mean, stylists and customers usually develop a relationship in addition to just talking about the cut itself. Theres also just talking, right . About life. Are you advising your employees to not do that right now, just only talk when you need to, but thats it . I think thats going to be the way its going to have to go, that Communications Going to have to be a little more pointed to the task at hand. A little bit less of that. Obviously we havent been in the realworld situation to experience how that is going to be navigated, and im sure everybodys going to share their stories about whats going on with them. Its going to be really difficult, as social creatures, to try and keep that to a minimum. Ensure the safety for g to have those around us. You know, one of the guidelines, of course, being reduce the number of customers. You told me that youre removing half the chairs so that people have 11 feet between them. Can you survive that way for long . Given the revenue cut from that . Thats going to be a challenge. Were going to open up extended hours. I think many salons that are in the same boat are going to be forced to do the same thing. But its a challenge. Rent is extremely steep where we are. We have fixed costs that are not really budging right now. And it is going to be very, very challenging for us, frankly, to be able to get through this. But i think with the right amount of strategy i have the best group of people i could ever imagine working for me, with me. For that reason, i think well make it through, for sure. Let me ask you, since the governor made his announcement at noontime today, have you been getting a lot of phone calls or emails from people wanting to book . Or getting the sense that people are kind of granted, San Francisco has not opened up yet for you guys, but the sense that its soon, now that the state is okaying it for most counties. Are you getting a lot of calls . Yeah, right now. Yeah, right now. You know, were getting texts, emails, phone calls, then sometimes followup texts with, oh, i didnt realize you guys are still going to be closed, or i have to respond to them, yeah, its not us right now, pretty soon. A lot of people are anxious to get their hair done again. Youre taking appointments, you just dont know if its going to be able to happen yet, but people can get on your books . Were not taking appointments yet. Were taking requests to be in line but were not structuring any appointments yet. Because we book so full for the most part, its going to be very, very difficult to move those clients back a week or two and be able to not displace other clients. So were waiting till we have the green light to know exactly what that looks like, to be able to accommodate for staff. The other thing we dont know is if theres going to be capacity constraints in San Francisco. There are not mentions of that in the california rules, but there could be capacity constraints in the city of San Francisco. If thats the case, we also need to be aware of that so that we dont overpromise and not get in a situation where we cant fulfill that. San francisco erred on the side of caution. Patrick, thank you for spending time with us. Thank you for having me, when we come back, lots of new medical developments with covid. Does heat kill the virus . Does mouth wash . Well talk to dr. Alok patel when we all right, welcome back. Lots of new to the effect of heat on the virus to mouthwash possibly being useful. Joining us to talk about all that is our special correspondent, dr. Alok patel. Hey, dr. Patel, good to see you. Good to digitally see you. Right, thats the way we have to see each other these days. Hair salons, we were just talking about, Governor Newsom saying that is now allowed in 47 counties. So hopefully soon in the bay area is the sense, right . Churches, of course, making plans to meet. Also we saw, not here so much, but elsewhere, pool parties in other parts of the country. B lifornia, socal, we saw people on the boardwalk close together. How concerned should we be . What do we keep our eyes on as we start to reopen . Kristin, two things to kind of look at here. You alluded to it. When we look at the businesses, the salons, the churches, i actually respect the fact that there is an outline for what these businesses need to do to safely reopen. First thing, checking different counties and making sure they are allowed to reopen based on the availability of testing, contact tracing, and cases. Also, these businesses are going to follow social distancing measures, however it may be, and hopefully encouraging everybody to wear masks. You alluded to people outside. We see pictures of pool parties, people at the beaches, that famous video of the lake of the ozarks. Everybody needs to remember were still in the first wave of this pandemic. Even if cases are slowing, theyre not gone. If we get more and more outbreaks while were going down in this wave, we could see another peak. Thats exactly what the World Health Organization is warning everybody about. So even though things are looking a little bit better, people still need to stay vigilant. Okay, well, lets talk about the heat, all right . This weekend, really hot, drove a lot of people to the beaches. The other headline im starting to see is, will heat kill the virus . So what about it heading into the summer . It is hot. The reason im wearing an ice cream lapel pin is to celebrate this heat wave. The short answer is, we dont really know yet. We do know direct heat can actually slow the reproduction for a lot of different viruses. This has been a theory thrown out for this particular coronavirus. But the important thing is that we have to wait and see what happens, but also, this virus is endemic to our communities, meaning its already here. So even if cases slow down throughout the summer, it doesnt mean that it cant pick right back up. For example, if we find out in a couple of months that heat really does slow down the spread of coronavirus, but everybody is on the beach crowded together and acting like its gone, thats going to negate any effects and were going to see cases spread all over again. All right. Well get to viewer questions in just a moment. Ive got to ask, a new study about mouthwash possibly killing covid19 or slowing the spread. What do you know about that one . It wasnt really a study per se. It was more kind of a review article looking at at what they had seen in the past about mouthwashes and different chemicals in mouthwash that can kill a virus. The reason why its a stretch, when we talk about disinfect ants, household things that can kill this coronavirus, 60 or more alcohol, that is not how much alcohol is going to be in your mouthwash, first of all. Thats 17 , 20 . On top of that, the virus itself isnt only living in the mouth where you swish with mouth wash, its living in your respiratory system, your nose, throat. And is it a real study . I dont recommend anyone goes out and buys mouthwash and thinks theyre able to reduce the transmission from that. This is the danger which en we headlines out there without full explanations. Marlenes question, if you live on the first floor and you have your window or door open,nt i hear this question a lot from people who live in urban areas. Or may have neighbors close to them. Honestly, it really depends on your specific situation and whats happening outside your window. If your window is on the first floor but its not necessarily facing a place where there may be crowds of people, youre probably fine. We know the virus can survive in a close, ventilated area. I would just take an assessment, whats right outside your window . Its good to get fresh air and sunshine, just make sure youre taking precautions. Sandra wants to know, how long after youre feeling 99 better after covid can you go out . Sandra, once youre feeling better, it is important that you still talk to your doctor about getting tested. Sometimes your doctor may recommend you get two tests to make sure youre negative so youre no longer contagious. Its one thing to go outside, but its another thing to actually go outside and still be able to infect other people. Were still learning more about how long youre contagious, even after youve contracted the virus, for several weeks. Check with your doctor, see what tests you need to get to make sure you are no longer shedding that virus. Robert wants to know, would it be okay to have a biopsy done at this time, or is it rather recommended to put it off for a little bit longer . I think this is an extremely important question. Im glad that we have it on air. So with all preventative medical procedures, even a biopsy, its really important that people are communicating with their Health Care Providers about not only if theyre able to get the biopsy now, if its important. Theres a difference between a procedure that can be put off for a long period of time or if its a biopsy for something thats looking for cancer. We should not be putting off medical procedures because of a fear you may get coronavirus by going to the doctors office. Talk to the medical clinic, see what steps theyre taking, see if you safely need to do it now. Rose tran has a good question. We were talking about hair salons. She asks why a hair salon can open but not nail salons. She feels they are pretty similar. From a transmission standpoint and the danger standpoint, can you explain why theyre a little different . If i had to make an educated guess, it would have to do with the type of interaction youre having. They may have to do with the fact that you can be faced apart from each other this is an educated guess. I would imagine in the future, as we progress through stage two, there will be a closer look at nail salons and looking at ways they can protect one another. Theres a difference between getting your nails, eyelashes done, working with hand to hand contact, as opposed to someone just directly interacting with your hair. Theres different ways. You look at guidelines, they can protect people getting their hair cut, versus protecting somebody else when you might be touching their bare hands, touching surfaces, sharing nail polishes, et cetera. Lastly, i want to ask you this. Over memorial day weekend you saw joe biden at events, and you saw President Trump at events, and it was a very different look. Biden wore a mask, trump did not. Is there any evidence of any impact by the actions of these leaders . I think the evidence comes down into what we see people doing and saying. When President Trump said hydroxychloroquine is a game changer, we saw that changing the publics attitude. We saw this past weekend on interviews saying, if the president doesnt wear a mask, i feel comfortable not wearing a mask if im going to socially distance. In pandemics, in times of crisis, clear, consistent national messaging is what people need to know. Not everybodys going to wade through the political news and studies. People need to know all leaders are following the same thing. If people at the top are not wearing masks, are downplaying the virus, are not talking about consistent testing, it sends mixed messages, that can be problematic. Dr. Alok patel, always good to catch up with you. New information on covid. Appreciate your time. Thanks so much. Thank you. Were going to take a quick break on air. The show never stops on our livestreams. When we come back, were going to dig into the workome world. Because that could be welcome aa tech giants arermenation. Square and twitter have gone all in. Facebook, microsoft, and google are all moving in that direction. Perhaps not with everybody but with as many people as possible for as long as possible. So what does that mean for managers and for employees . How can you be successful without facetoface contact . Our next guest is here to help us with that. San francisco entrepreneur and expert in creating successful virtual workplaces, teddy liau, hi. Hi, good to see you. I should add youre the ceo of nextrep. You train Call Center Operators for workforce companies. Your trend has been work from home. What do you lose when you have that, the downside of having a workforce thats trained remotely, always works remotely . Weve always been at home, so we dont feel weve lost anything. Weve been doing this well over a decade. By moving people at home, you lose things like being able to run into people on the way to the bathroom, being able to schedule a walk to starbucks to grab coffee and come back. Theres things you lose, but were learning now with stats and figures that we gain a lot more. Productivity is increasing. People dont have to commute. The Carbon Footprint were leaving is improving. In a lot of ways people enjoy the flexibility, they enjoy being home, they enjoy other things if it is done right. I have to say, as mom, i do work in an office but ive got to think there are parents who would like that situation, where they dont have to spend money on child care or hire a babysitter. Absolutely. 85 of our workforce, and weve got 5,000 folks on our platform, 85 of those people are women, a lot of them are stayathome moms. How do you create the culture of a team . When they dont get together for pingpong at recess or happy hour after work . Yeah, id say theres three things. First thing is youve got to do video where appropriate as much as possible. Number two, youve got to unleash technology where and when, and ill explain. Number three, make sure that you actually have scheduled interactions with people. So video, everybodys using zoom, web x, go to meeting. Theres a lot of opportunities to use Free Services as well for folks, skype, google hangouts. 30plus people on facetime. So use video where and when possible. Its not necessarily in person, but it sure is facetoface. Secondly, theres Collaboration Tools. Microsoft teams, slack. This is super important. Our entire company and organization is constantly in these Collaboration Tools pinging updates, giving statuses, making sure we give each other virtual high fives and shoutouts. Definitely scheduling a lot of scheduled interaction. For example, one of the things that we love to do is randomly send food to teams, all at once, so it doesnt matter if youre five feet away, five miles away, five states away, you get lunch at the same time. Everybody pops vems on video. They eat together. Its not exactly the same, but afterwards we do a round of scatter gories or other games. Theres a lot of ways to bring together teams. How do you make an impression on bosses or cowork is where its virtual all the time . Overcommunicate. Go over slack and teams at the start of the day, make sure you overcommunicate. Make sure you proactively organize zoom or videobased interactions. The more that youre adding to the culture and not just an individual contributor worker, make sure you have visibility in your job as a worker. Teddy liau, ceo of nextrep, thank you for the great advice. Thank you for that could mean an increase byin energy bills. You can save by using a fan to cool off. Unplugging and turning off devices when not in use. Or closing your shades during the day. Stay well and keep it golden. Yn this interactive show getting answers. Lets take a look at the big news today before we go. Governor newsom giving the green light to hair salons and barbershops to reopen where the county allows for it. Thats 47 counties. Unfortunately not most of the bay area counties, for those of you who are eager to get your hair cut. No touching faces, so right now no eyelash, brow waxing. And no nail salons, that is to come later. Well be here every day at 3 00 on air and on our livestream platforms answering your questions. Facebook live, youtube live, abc7news. The growing outrage tonight over the deeply disturbing death of a black man arrested and handcuffed by police in minneapolis. The officer seen with his knee on the mans neck.
