New research is coming out of south korea about patients testing positive even after recovering, as well as just how far our cough droplets can really travel. I spoke with epidemiologist and Infectious Disease specialist dr. Yvonne maldonado. Face masks and the spread of covid19. A new study finds droplets from a persons cough can travel as far as 18 feet, a much shorter distance before. What do we need to know . We always knew that, i dont think thats a big surprise. You can actually expel droplets quite some distance, depending how forceful you are, how much wind or flow there is in a room. So the really important thing to remember is that masks keep the droplets from spreading those 18 feet. So as long as we wear our masks, they wont spread. A big headline this morning comes out of south korea, coronavirus patients who tested positive after recovery are not infectious according to researchers. And they suggest its unlikely someone can be reinfected. How sure are we about this science . Whats the takeaway here . We cant be 100 sure that theyre not being reinfected, but its unlikely. That happens with other viruses as well, where you might have intermittent shedding of the virus or maybe the detection levels of virus are so low you might not pick them up in between. So i think i assume that that would be the case when they did the investigation, and i think that just means that there are people who may shed the virus for longer periods of time. But those viruses may be in very low levels and may not be able to be transmitted as easily as when somebody is acutely ill for the first time. Dr. Maldonado, we reported yesterday on the significant progress the Company Moderna has seen in its vaccine trial, but there are new questions about well, rem were all ineveryb excited. And ty because what we know for sure is that some people made antibodies that inactivated the virus. What we dont know is a lot of other things. How many people will make those antibodies . How much of that antibody will be made . How long will it last . Will it really be protective . I think this is a step in the right direction, but again, were brandnew, brandnew studies, we still need more work to do. I think we should still be optimistic. Schools are planning now for the fall. Some colleges say theyll start classes early, skip breaks. Some places leave campus at thanksgiving ahead of another expected spike. Some schools are considering skipping school altogether or having students return a couple of days a week. Your thoughts, or does the timeline for going back to school depend on the area and the number of cases . Thats part of the reason. One of the reasons to figure out your schedule. The other issue i would take into account is how prepared is the School District . What are the needs and the resources of each School District . And i think for colleges in particular, what are the sizes of the classes . And how flexible can they be in their scheduling . I think there wont be one answer. I think people are being very careful and thinking very hard about how to make this work for their schools so that there arent further infections. Our thanks to dr. Maldonado there. Schools and parents have a lot to figure out over the next few months or so. Obviously the plans are in the works right now for how the fall will look. But when you hear about schools thinking about skipping summer breaks altogether, getting back in there as soon as possible, that also says a lot about how people think that the fall will be impacted by the coronavirus as well. Theres no blueprint for this. No. Theyre kind of making it up as they go. So theres going to be a lot of trial and error. It might not be smooth sailing, but theyre definitely trying their best.
