No, abbott is a great test. Its a very quick test. And it can always be very rapidly doublechecked. If youre testing positive or negative, it can always be doublechecked. Reporter abbott says when their test is used as instructed, it works. Now the fda is saying its still okay to use those tests, but if it does come back negative, it might be worth a second one just to double check. Eva . Eva, the World Health Organization is joining the chorus of voices sounding the alarm about a rare inflammatory syndrome affecting children, as new yorks governor warns the public to expect more cases. Abcs Marci Gonzalez joins us from home in los angeles with the latest concerns. Marci, good morning. Reporter whit, good morning. Were hearing more stories of children who have battled this. One mother saying her son was outside playing feeling perfectly fine and then the next spiking a fever and showing other symptoms that fortunately doctors took seriously right away. This morning, intensifying concerns about that rare inflammatory syndrome in children linked to coronavirus. Abc news identifying at least 220 possible and confirmed cases in 20 states plus washington, d. C. More than 100 of those cases in new york where three children have died. And that 100 cases, ill wager, thats going to only go up and it will be much more wide spread than anyone thinks. Reporter new york city joining the cdc issuing urgent alerts about whats known as pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome. Telling doctors to watch for patients with a fever of 100. 4 degrees that lasts for 24 hours along with inflammation in children infected or exposed to covid19 within four weeks of the start of symptoms. 7yearold levis mother never knew he had covid19 until after his scare with this syndrome. But the first grader coming down with a high persistent fever and vomiting. His doctor recognizing the warning signs admitting him to the hospital where his symptoms evolved. He had the red eyes, red lips. Then it went to the stomach pains and then all of a sudden he had pneumonia and had to be put on oxygen. Reporter after a week at beaumont royal oak hospital in michigan levi was discharged. His test coming back positive for covid19 antibodies. These children for whatever reason, they have a response to the virus that is excessive, immunoresponse in overdrive. Once you recognize it quickly and intervene quickly, then you can reverse it quickly as well. Reporter levis mother grateful to have her little boy healthy and back at home this morning. If i would have waited any longer, could have been having a different discussion right now. Reporter there are still so many questions about this syndrome which is why levis doctor said it is so important for parents to stay vigilant. If their child starts showing some of these symptoms not to waste any time calling their doctor. Dan . Marci, thank you so much. Valuable information there. So many of us have so many questions about this, like marci said, especially those with kids. So lets bring in dr. Todd ellerin, abc news medical contributor and Infectious Diseases physician. Todd, good morning to you. The World Health Organization is just out with a new brief on this condition just hours ago. They say they dont know how many kids have gotten sick or whether there have been cases outside the u. S. And europe and dont know for sure whether this syndrome is 100 linked to covid. With so many open questions, how concerned should parents be . Well, good morning, dan. Recognrare. Not worry, but we do able to recognize it. Think about inflammation, high fevers, red eye, diarrhea, rash that may be red or blue, in constellation then we have to be concerned and you want to call the pediatrician. But in isolation any of these symptoms unlikely to be the mysterious syndrome and its reportable now. Thats important because well learn more about it. I found it reassuring to hear that doctor in michigan in marcis piece say, if you catch it early, you can treat it. Does that sound right to you . Most kids as serious as this sounds, most kids do well with this still. Really, really reassuring to hear that. Lets turn now to the search for a vaccine. It takes a long time to develop one. But the Trump Administration says its hopeful theyll have one by january. As far as i know, the quickest weve ever had a vaccine developed in history is four years. So how realistic is january in your view . Okay, so if the question is are we going to get injected by january next year, thats very unlikely. But i will tell you i believe by january well be further along than weve ever been in vaccine development. And one thing to look at is the fda just gave the green light for one of the companies in the u. S. Thats manufacturing vaccines to go from the phase one, that safety phase, to phase two which is a larger safety phase. Instead of looking at less than 50 patients, theyre going to now inject 600 patients, look for that safety signal and then immune response. So were moving along rapidly. So we may not hit january but things are proceeding at a rather quick pace. Dr. Ellerin, always appreciate your analysis. Thank you so much for getting up with us this morning. Take care, dan. Eva, over to you. The house passed a recordbreaking 3 trillion covid19 stimulus package friday night, but democrats say they have little hope of the bill making it past the republican controlled senate. We echo the sentiment that so many people are voicing across the country in thanking First Responders and others on the front lines. We are, though, going to switch gears and get to our lead story for this half hour. The case that provoked so much outrage, the shooting of Ahmaud Arbery. This morning, new Text Messages coming to light. This as we hear from the attorneys for the suspects. Abcs Zachary Kiesch has the story. Reporter new Text Messages are shedding light on the events leading up to the death of Ahmaud Arbery. A 25yearold unarmed black man out for a jog when he was shot and killed in february. Wanda cooper and the family of Ahmaud Arbery are frustrated these Text Messages are just now surfacing. Reporter two white men, Travis Mcmichael and his father gregory, a former cop, have been charged with murder. In a Text Exchange an officer sent mcmichaels number to the Property Owner in the Satilla Shores neighborhood and said mcmichael had offered assistance if anyone else came on to the property. According to his attorney the owner Larry English never saw the text and never contacted mcmichael. He had not spoken with the mcmichaels and did not know them at that point. Reporter his lawyer tells abc news he did have a Security Camera that pushed notifications to his phone when someone entered the construction site. Video shows several different people entering the property. One appears to be arbery, though nothing was stolen. The homeowner even suggesting they think arbery stopped into the home to get a drink of water from the working sinks. Greg mcmichaels lawyers speaking out. The truth will reveal that this is not just another act of violent racism. Greg mcmichael did not commit murder. We know that Gregory Mcmichael and his son Travis Mcmichael found ahmaud running on february 23rd. Decided he was a criminal and murdered him in the streets. Reporter this case has gotten a lot of attention and calls for justice. After perceived conflicts of interest and inaction, it took a long time for any arrests to be made. 74 days after the shooting but just 36 hours after the Georgia Bureau of investigations took over. Eva . All right, Zachary Kiesch for us, thank you. Joining us now is civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump who was hired by Ahmaud Arberys family. Welcome to you. Lets get right to this. This new evidence this morning with this text message, how does this affect the case . Its an explosive piece of evidence. It has been long speculated that the police should have arrested this murderous duo that day and now there are questions as to why they did not do it on day one and it suggests that this text may have been the reason they didnt arrest him because they knew they could be implicated as aiding and abetting in the crimes of the mcmichaels. Now, looking at some of the other evidence, have you talked to the homeowner and where is your team focusing its investigation and your attention in your investigation . Yeah, we have discussed with the homeowners attorney about the videos and the troubling text message and apparently when Greg Mcmichaels lawyers say that this is not a violent act of racism, well, that text message suggests that there was an organized mob that apparently had a premeditated plan to confront and capture the young black man next time he jogged through the community because we know there were white people in the construction that we see in the video and nobody had a plan to confront and capture them. The only reason they did this apparently is because of the color of ahmauds skin. As time goes on, we continue to learn about people who were more people who were aware of different parts of this story. Based on your conversations, do you think theres still more that we need to learn . Certainly. We have demanded Ahmaud Arberys family an investigation from the beginning of the investigation and everything involved in it because this text message was sent by a police officer. Why would the Police Department condone a lynch mob to try to capture a young black man who from all they knew had committed no crime whatsoever . So are the police complicit in this . We certainly know that Gregory Mcmichael and Travis Mcmichael were part of the organized mob, if not the leaders of it, to capture the young black man next time he ran through the Satilla Shores community and this cannot be overstated how important this text message is. Still so many questions this morning. So many people wanting answers to those questions. Benjamin crump, thank you so much for being with us this morning. Whit, over to you. Eva, lets shift gears and get a check of the forecast and go back to rob marciano in massachusetts. And, rob, we do have to say, i know youre covering Severe Weather there, but we do miss you here in the studio. A small piece of us, small piece is just not with us this morning in here. A big piece i should say. Reporter emphasis on small. I get that. Thank you. Nice to hear from three of you back there. Guys, getting a better look. I want to share with you a frightening night in holyoke. You can see the roof of this old Apartment Building thats layered in brick ripped off and smashing down on these cars here and it goes around the corner as well with another brick building with the roof ripped off there. So significant damage here in western massachusetts. All right. We do have other storms. I mentioned getting quite active across much of the country and the next one in the midwest. That will probably bring some Severe Weather to places like chicago back across the mississippi and eventually pressing east across the ohio river as well and that as we iol low and create some messy conditions across the east coast and another system dipping into the northwest, it looks like for tomorrow into monday and that will bring not just rain but its a cold core system so probably see significant mountain snow with that. Were still not out of the woods as far as the snow goes even though its midmay. Winter doesnt want to go away. Lots o reporter this Weather Report sponsored by the u. S. Postal service. Air travel has been off the table for many people for months but as americans slowly retake to the skies, expect lots of changes starting from the moment you arrive at the airport. Abcs Clayton Sandell has more. Reporter the next time you fly the number on a thermometer may be just as important as your gate number. This morning the wall street journal is reporting the white house is considering passenger temperature checks at about a dozen airports an effort to keep covid19 from spreading city to city. The tsa says no decision has been made regarding specific Health Screening measures at airports, the safety and security of the traveling public and our employees will always be our top priority. Fever checks are already popping up in some airports. In bozeman, montana, National Guard troops check every arriving passenger. At l. A. X. Theyre planning to use new cameras that sense heat. We could see on a screen who has an enhanced temperature and then we can do a further secondary check on that person to determine if they are ill or not. Reporter the future of flying includes face masks, touchless kiosks, high tech plane cleaning and maybe long delays. The physical distancing is going to be the biggest challenge and that probably will be the cause of most delays.
