Staffers wore them at the president s latest briefing during which he said the u. S. Has prevailed when it comes to testing. But the current rate of testing is still far behind his own targets. Plus what caused him to abruptly end that briefing and the warning from dr. Anthony fauci thats expected in the senate today. Also this morning, the the weekend also closed. Da, pro plus when hardhit new york city can expect to reopen. Plus, the search is on for the owner of that suv seen driving over the graves of veterans. When you want to hug it out but youre in the middle of a pandemic, well show you the inventive way a 10yearold is managing to hug her grandparents and still stick to cdc guidelines. Its tuesday, may 12th. Sometimes you just need a hug. Yes. And its crazy because these kids are going to grow up and tell their kids about the stories of how they used to hug their grandparents through saran wrap and all the creative ways. This is definitely a time that we are going to remember and repeat. Yes. We will talk about that little girl soon, and hopefully maybe you can do something very similar. We begin with the latest developments on this coronavirus crisis. As of this morning more than 80,000 americans have died, and there are more than 1. 3 million confirmed cases nationwide. Dr. Anthony fauci and other Top Health Officials are set to testify before a Senate Committee today. Fauci is expected to warn about reopening the country too soon, saying it could lead to new outbreaks and quote needless suffering and death. Fauci and the heads of the cdc and fda will appear by video as they selfquarantine. They may have been exposed at the white house, where new rules are now in efft stafr masks int wing. President trump is again claiming testing is available for anyone who wants it. Abcs Jonathan Karl has more. Reporter in the rose garden, a sign of a new white house reality. Almost everyone wearing masks. Just about everybody ive seen today has worn a mask, yeah. Are you the one who required that, sir . Yeah, i did. I did. I required it. Reporter at least two people close to the president have tested positive. One of his military valets and the Vice President s press secretary, katie miller. Senior staff at the white house are now getting tested every day. A luxury thats not available to most of the country, even as the president urges states to reopen. When will it be that americans across the country will be able to get tested every day as they go back to work . Very soon. Really very soon. Should people be told to go back to work until they have that assurance that they and their coworkers are able to get tests, which were still not there . Were leaving that up to the governors as you know. If we see something wrong, well call them out and well stop it. But we are leaving it up to the governors. Reporter a followup from abcs jordyn phelps. Mr. President , there does seem to be a double standard where members of your own staff can get tests frequently when they need it but ordinary americans cannot. When will the rest of america have the same access that members the your own white house have to testing . If we did no tests in the white house youd be complaining, why arent you getting tests for the white house . We cant win. Because if we didnt get the test i understand you very well. Better than you understand yourself. Frankly, if we didnt get tests done youd be up complaining. Reporter the president also insisted this. If somebody wants to be tested right now, theyll be able to be tested. If i can get a clarification on the testing, weve seen clearly that the numbers of tests have gone up, there have been some advancements in testing. Youve said twice here today that every american who wants a test can get a test. Yes. Thats not the case. 1. 9 million tests per day is far short of every american that wants a test to be able to get it. I could have the admiral, but i will say just from listening and hearing like you do, we all do, not everybody should get a test. Because they have to have certain things and theyre going to know when theyre not feeling right. Those are the people that will be getting the tests. Admiral, ill let you take it from there, please. So everybody who needs a test can get a test. We have plenty of tests for that right now in america, anybody who needs a test can get a test in america with the numbers we have. If you are symptomatic, with a respiratory illness, that is an indication for a test, and you can get a test. Reporter press conference ended with this tense exchange. You said many times that the u. S. Is doing far better than any other country when it comes to testing. Yes. Why does that matter . Why is this a global competition to you, if Everyday Americans are still losing their lives and were still seeing more cases every day . Well, theyre losing their lives everywhere in the world. And maybe thats a question you should ask china. Dont ask me, ask china that question, okay . When you ask them that question, you may get a very unusual answer. Yes, behind you, please sir, why are you saying that to me specifically . Im telling you that its china . Im not saying it specifically to anybody, im saying it to anybody that would ask a nasty question like thats not a nasty question please, go ahead. Jonathan karl, abc news, the white house. Reporr in detroit, 9yearold josie paskvin had high fever and red eyes off and on for weeks. My tummy hurted and my throat was dry. She says usually with kawasaki syndrome, historically its affected children under the age of 5. In it an emotional executive tells the office staffers that ubers business is down 50 and that was their last day for the company. Some complain they had no notice. Kenneth, youve probably heard this proverb before, necessity is the mother of invention. It comes from the book of mona. In california, a 10yearold needed to hug her grandparents during this crisis. So young paige invented this. Its a huge curtain. Its made out of a shower curtain, ziploc bags, and disposable plates. She came up with the idea after seeing people use a blanket to hug family members. Now we know that a grandmothers hug theres levels to this. A grandmothers hug is so vital and necessary that i would invent this too. So young paige, i commend you. Bravo. And also bravo just thinking about her mom as well, whos also a nurse in a covid unit. So she has to keep her distance from her parents. And so especially during this time, we know the kids, they need that touch. They havent been able to get it. Parents are having to have that discussion with their children about why you cant be around your friends, why you cant run up to strangers if youre trying to obviously practice social distancing. So these are important times. Just to get that little touch, paige said she needed it, she got it. Coming up, the state of americas virus testing. Our medical expert weighs in. Yesterday the president once again doubled down on testing saying quote if somebody wants to be tested right now, theyll be able to be tested. That sentiment about the state of americas testing is not shared by many health professionals. I spoke with dr. Ravi from Stanford University of medicine. When it comes to testing President Trump says the u. S. Has prevailed when it comes to testing. Whats your assessment . Its important that we have the capabilities to test both the symptomatic and asymptomatic populations within our states as we work to reopen. We need to be able to test anyone whos symptomatic, which were working towards, but really have the capabilities to test the asymptomatic, vulnerable populations. These include patients who are elderly or have comorbidities, as well as healthy individuals who work in publicfacing jobs and coming in contact with many individuals. Theres no consensus yet but more researchers believe the outside temperature and possible humidity have an impact on coronavirus. Thats because what were seeing in florida, texas, and california compared to new york. So do warmer temps make this virus spread less aggressively . You know, weve always been trying to compare the current Novel Coronavirus to prior coronaviruses such as sars and mers and trying to see what parallels and differences exist. We knew that for these prior coronaviruses that they survived for shorter period of times at higher temperature and higher humidity. As the weeks and months have passed, as you mentioned, weve gathered more data for the Novel Coronavirus. And i think as you said, there is no consensus yet. But we are learning that temperature and humidity do have some impact. The question is to what degree . As many of these states are doing other interventions. I dont think anyone should take the information that we are learning to mean that we can drop social distancing completely in the months ahead as summer weather spreads throughout the United States. Dr. Ravi, on that mystery illness affecting children that may be related to covid19, we know more cases are being reported. We also know the symptoms include potential heart problems and rash. Now were hearing this kind of illness may have been seen during other outbreaks like mers and sars. What can you tell us, and could it lead doctors to a treatment for this mystery illness . Were definitely working every day to learn more and more about this syndrome that has been impacting children throughout the United States. As we look to once again compare the parallels to prior coronaviruses that existed in the past, like you mentioned, i think the focus is really on the individual organ systems and what we can learn in terms of best practices to support those organ systems, whether its the heart, the lungs, the kidneys. I think were going to continue to work to support and make sure these children are getting better. Some states are starting to allow parents to book summer camps for their kids but no overnight stays. Whats your advice to parents . I can definitely understand as Virtual Schools are coming to a close and businesses start to open with parents having to go into work that parents need to think about the summer. One of the reasons overall that children have done well during this pandemic is the fact that they havent been in school, theyve been able to stay away from other children. I do worry about the difficulties of maintaining safe social distancing even at a day camp. So id tell parents to think carefully about the environment theyre placing their kids in and really look into the precautions that camps are taking to protect the children and their staff. Our thanks to dr. Ravi there. So much for parents and families to think about. Especially when you think about the rest of this year. Still, it feels like we know a lot, it feels like we know little. Summer camp is crucial for a lot of parents who rely on it. As they go back to work, they need to figure out whos to take care of their children. Summer camp, especially with school out, is a great option. Doctors are banging that drum saying, we need a robust infrastructure when it comes to testing.
