Phase 2 on friday. Only napa and solano counties told us they do plan to do so. San Francisco Mayor london breed explained it this way. The numbers are still going up. The number of deaths are still going up. And we have not lowered the curve. So we have to be mindful of that, and we have to be responsible when we look at ways to bring various industries back. Even as parts of the state begin phase 2, a Bleak Outlook today from Governor Newsom who said its still a long road to reopening and recovery. Its going to take a lot longer than people think. Its going to take a lot longer than people are saying. This is serious. Weve never experienced anything like this in our lifetime. This is depression era numbers in terms of the unemployment youll see across this country, not just in the state of california. Still, as we all try to get through this together, a reminder even the governor has some relatable challenges. I think its pretty obvious to you i have not had a haircut. Im a little embarrassed having this conversation as publicly as i am having. There was an experiment with brooklyn, my daughter, where she did offer because she was a bit embarrassed, quote unquote, with her father, she offered to cut it. But she brought out some of her craft scissors, which certainly werent up for the task. A little funny moment there. I think we can all relate to that right now. But look, the headline is napa and solano counties are the two counties that plan to move into phase 2 this week. Other counties might move into phase 2 some time this month. Marin says they want to allow for Curbside Pickup for businesses in midmay. Liz, as you know, Governor Newsom announced two executive orders today. He had a lot to say at his news briefing. What can you tell us about those executive orders . Yeah, there was a lot today. Two really important things to say. The first is that the state is going to waive late penalty fees for property taxes through next may, may 2021 for homeowners. So thats some big news there. Secondly, has to do with workers compensation, frontline workers that test positive for covid19. Thanks, liz, very much. New at 6 00, the Company Behind one of the bay areas most popular summer camps is filing for bankruptcy. Galileo learning made the announcement today less than a month after it canceled all of its Summer Season because of coronavirus. Camp galileo is offering virtual science and art classes while the company restructures. The list of companies laying people off to stay afloat financially grows by the day. Some of the best known names in by Area Business have announced deep cuts to their workforce and are looking at structural changes. That may mean a different jobs picture when covid19 cases subside. Eric thomas reports from the east bay. Even if my heart hurts now while pursuing a music degree, she did what a lot of us do, waited tables until she was laid off. Its extremely painful. Then lost her apartment and moved back in with mom in el cerrito. I have been on my own since 17 years old and i dont want to have to rely on other people. But layoffs are a way of life under covid19. Here are just a few bay area based companies that have announced big job cuts recently. Uber is laying off 3700 workers. Lyft is cutting 982 positions. Airbnb laying off 1900 people. And we dont know how many local workers are affected at those three companies. We do know that the oakland as are laying off nearly 800 people. The San Francisco giants cutting 1200 jobs, and bon appetit restaurant is laying off more than 1500 workers in San Francisco. I think in the shortterm there are going to be some sectors that are going to have trouble coming back, even under the best Public Health response. Uc berkeley and economics professor Jesse Rothstein says that includes restaurants and other small businesses, but he says even powerhouses like uber who thought treating drivers as independent contractors made them less susceptible to layoffs are finding thats not true in this pandemic. But even when all this begins to quiet down, some things may never go back to the way they were. Set your expectation that the return to the office is not exactly going back to your old job. Randall micek with job Placement Firm robert half says there will be less travel, more working from home, and even those who do work in offices will find fewer people and nor social distancing. New at 6 00 tonight, a look at the bay areas live animal markets and new calls to shut them down in light of the coronavirus, the leading theory that the pandemic started in a live animal market in wuhan, china. But do some markets here actually pose a risk . I Team Reporter dan noyes has been investigating this issue and he is joining us life with a report youll see only on abc7 news. Dan . This controversy has played out for several decades in the bay area, but its getting new life because of the pandemic. A word of caution here. Some of these pictures may be disturbing to you. Eric mills has campaigned for 25 years to close the live animal markets that i toured the last few days in oakland and San Francisco. United states has markets very similar to those in china where this coronavirus originated with animals living cheek to jowl with the human population, wild animals and domestic, just a disaster waiting to happen. I visited stores with live poultry, seafood stories with live fish and tanks and live bullfrogs imported from china. Turtles go for 20. They have to be killed before a customer takes it home. And you kill it here . Yeah, yeah. Weve had Something Like two dozen necropsies done on the frogs and turtles done over the years. And without exception, theyre all diseased and parasitized. Over the years mills tried a lawsuit to close the market, even got a bill introduced in sacramento. But it never worked . Yes, never work. Community leader deng lee tells me San Franciscos Chinese Americans wield considerable political clout, and theyve successfully argued that the live animal markets are part of their cultural traditions. Will hurt some peoples feeling because they got oldfashioned traditional thought. They say hey, we eat that pour more than 5,000 years. Thats our utility cher. But the coronavirus may provide a new warning about live animal markets. The leading theory is covid19 passed from a bat to another animal and then a human at this market in wuhan, china. Having just one species is dangerous enough as we know from bird flu and swine flu and the like. But when you mix different species of animals just waiting disaster to happen. People for the ethical treatment of animals gave me this video of live animal markets operating right now even after the pandemic erupted in thailand and indonesia. All sorts of animals, wild and domestic for human consumption. Peta is urging the World Health Organization to call for the immediate and permanent closure of all live meat markets worldwide, as are members of congress, including San Francisco senator dianne feinstein. And how can we tell china or vietnam or india to close their wet markets when we havent done that here . This has been a point of contention for years and years, but it looks like there could be some room for change. Deng lee tells me he would favor closing live animal markets if a link to the coronavirus pandemic is scientifically proven. If for the majority opinion, i think i would agree with that. If it was in the public good . Yeah, for Public Healthy. And if we learn nothing else from this god awful pandemic, we need to learn a little humility and to share the planet with others with a little compassion, both human and nonhuman alike. Henry stern, a state senator from l. A. Has announced he is sponsoring a measure to ban the live animal markets. And in San Francisco, the department of Public Health has announced that they will enforce a ban, but at this point, under current law, these live animal markets are allowed to operate. It is day 51 of sheltering in place here in the bay area. Taking a live look at some bay area bridges. Traffic is light, but not as light as it once was. Bridge crossing data from the Bay Area Toll Authority shows weekday traffic is rebounding a little. At its lowest point in the first week of april, traffic was down more than 54 . This last monday it was down only 40 . Thats the average for the seven stateowned bridges in the bay area. You see them on the map. Some have seen more of a decrease than others and others have seen less than an impact. Bart ridership is down 93 at last check, and that is not rebounding. Its been that way pretty consistently since the bay area began to shelter in place back on march 17th. A distillery in pacifica is at odds with the San Mateo Health order after claiming it was banned from selling Hand Sanitizer to hospitals and First Responders amid the pandemic. But as of today, that changed. Abc7 news News Reporter stephanie sierra is live, breaking down the details. Stephanie . Well, dan, this is causing some confusion on social media. Some distilleries were initially told they couldnt sell sanitizer to First Responders, but we just learned today Pacifica Police corrected that, given the health order allows production for essential services. Jason tripp and his team at the tripp disindustrialry in pacifica have produced 200 gallons of Hand Sanitizer to sell to hospitals and First Responders across the bay area. I pump it into the port. In the email, Pacifica Police chief dan steidle wrote tripp cant operate his storefront business or sell Hand Sanitizer. Abc7 news reached out to the chief who clarified his response to say in certain instance, products may continue to be delivered to the public or First Responders, health care providers, or sold to essential businesses. But according to the statement, nonessential businesses cannot sell alcohol iic ber iic bevera it does not conform to the San Mateo Health order, despite there is a clause in the order under minimum basic operations that allows businesses to deliver inventory to residences and businesses assuming safe social distancing practices. Every other distillery in the state of california can sell bottles to go. You can show up to the store and buy bottles. They can also have bottles delivered to your house. This comes after the california alcoholic beverage control, the governing body for alcohol licenses in the state announced it would temporarily ease laws surrounding public alcohol sales and to go delivery orders amid pandemic to help businesses like tripps stay alive. But those rules dont apply in pacifica. You know, its frustrating. Ill probably lay off twothirds of our employees today. You know, they dont i dont know how much money they have in the bank. Now i reached out to San Mateo County health to declarify the language in that order and was told theyre now looking into it. Reporting live, stephanie sierra, abc7 news. All right, stephanie, thank you so much. The state is making it easier to find a coronavirus test on californias coronavirus website. Health clubs and gyms around the bay area are making plans to reopen their operations, and as part of that process, theyre making some changes as well. Abc7 News Reporter Leslie Brinkley has that story. What will it be like to walk into your Favorite Club or gym when you reopen . Youre really going to see a reimagined experience as a member. There are 65 24 hour fitness clubs around the bay area. Two out of three cardio machines will be closed to remain social distancing. Theyre planning on touchless checkin systems as members schedule time at the gym on their app. Youll have the ability up to the day to make a reservation. These reservations will be for onehour workout increments. And after every one hour worth of workout increments, well close future a corresponding half an hour so we can clean our facilities. At the bay club in walnut creek, staff zoom training sessions are under way on new sanitizing protocols. Theyve moved a lot of their equipment for cycling and rowing outdoors into zones by the pool. Inside all of the machines have been spaced between six to eight feet apart. Youll see taping off of pods for people that are 10 by 10 spaces. And the other piece of it is a reservation system. Capacity limits may start at 25 at the 14 clubs in the bay area. Spas and saunas will remain closed. Eventually lockers and showers will be limited to use of every third one.
