The president says that extra protective gear will be made available to those workers, testing as well, and the federal government will provide guidelines, safety guidelines, for how those meatpacking plants can be arranged so that they continue their work safely. The president responding to the possibility, the very real possibility, that americas food chain would break, that in just a matter of weeks there would be no meat on Grocery Store shelves. Not a matter of supply, but of distribution. Because there is great concentration in the meatpacking industry, just a few plants going down can bringchn t. That wha responding to. Unions and activists representing all those meatpacking workers are concerned that theres not enough safety involved, that while the meat will continue to get to the shelves, theres not enough safety for the workers. Beer being poured down the drain by the keg, yall. Hate to see it. Why, why is this happening . First, could we really have a Coronavirus Vaccine by september . Our medical expert weighs in. Abc news got a look inside an army lab fighting the war against the coronavirus. Scientists inside the Walter Reed Army institute of research are working 24 hours a day in three shifts. They hope to begin testing in humans in late summer, and if that works, to begin vaccinating people in september. They say theyve condensed two years of works into two months. Scientists at oxford also say they hope to have a vaccine available by september. But is september a realistic goal for a vaccine or is it overly optimistic . I spoke earlier with dr. Alok patel. Dr. Patel, researchers are expressing new hope about a vaccine possibly by september. Those university of oxford Scientists Say theyve tested their vaccine on some monkeys as you know and gotten good results. Your thoughts . I think we can all be optimistic and the results with the monkeys are positive. The researchers announced theyre going to start human testing on a grander scale about 6,000 people by the end of the month. Heres the thing. September does seem optimistic. Vaccines have to go through three phases of trial. Youve got to make sure theres a good immune response, theyre safe, theyre stable, and you can manufacture on a large scale. Usually vaccines take years to develop so well see. Im skeptical but hopeful. We saw long lines at clinics, people waiting a couple of hours for antibody tests. Theres new research on these kinds of tests. What are you learning . What were learning is there are now about 175 tests out there that have not been properly fda approved. Theres only about seven that have gotten that authorization. Heres the thing. Many tests out there may have high false positive or false negative rates so people have to be very careful when theyre going out to get a test independently. One survey from the covid tracking project showed that some tests can have as high as a 15 false positive rate. So imagine getting a test saying that youre positive, and youre potentially protected, and really thats not true. So this could lead to an issue. The Consumer Needs to be wary about what theyre taking and what the results truly mean or what they dont mean. Lets move to our pets. We first reported yesterday about the first known dog in this country testing positive for coronavirus. Weve previously heard of housecats and zoo animals with the virus. With dogs being the top choice of pet for millions of americans, is there bigger concern here about infected dogs . The first thing i will say is that pet that tested positive is adorable, that pug whose picture is all over the news about pets. As far as we know there is still no evidence of either severe disease in dogs from coronavirus or spread from dogs to humans. This specific pet had some breathing issues, maybe sneezing and feeling a little sluggish. But every veterinarian whos spoken out about this is telling people to go ahead and calm down. Maintain safe distance from your pets and treat them with the same precautions you would treat another human, because as of right now we still dont know. But given the fact that there are so many people who have been exposed and so many pets out there and there isnt this big epidemic of sick dogs, i do feel optimistic about how pets are going to fare in all this. Again, there is no evidence of humans catching this from their cats or their dogs or any other mammals out there that they may have as pets. Vice president mike pence is taking heat for not wearing a mask while visiting the mayo clinic tuesday, defying the mayo clinics policy. He says hes tested on a regular basis and people around him are getting tested. What are your thoughts . Vice president pence did mention that hes getting coronavirus testing weekly, that people around him are getting tested. But we know that you can get a negative test and still be infected and the test could show up later as a positive test. I think the other issue is again, when people see things, they dont always interpret those details. We mentioned its possible you could still be positive if you had a negative test a few days ago. But also from not wearing a mask to potentially crowded beaches to drinking bleach. People are hearing messages and its causing misinformation. We need to be a little more consistent about recommendations and actually practicing them. Dr. Patel, thank you. Coming up, the man who won the lottery twice on the same day.
