Local doctors and researchers doing their part to study the virus spread and ways to stop it in its tracks. This morning doctors at ucsf are starting treatments as a new way to save lives using something they call liquid gold. Good morning. Thank you for joining us. We have a full look at the tests and full look at the coronavirus in the bay area. But first lets get a quick look at the weather with lisa argen. Good morning to you. The fog is peeling back. If youre up early, it made its way across the bay and we were foggy halfway to half moon bay. It is 53 downtown but 61 in san jose. A lot of sunshine for you. You can see the clouds over the city and 60 in petaluma, mid60s in concord. Warming up already but were going to halt that morning. This morning 2 to 7 degrees cooler on the peninsula thanks to the fog. The onshore push as we go through the afternoon, sunny skies and highs reaching 80 in the inland valley. But for most of us, midtoupper 70s but breezy at the coast. Liz . This morning precious plasma is leading a ucs study and hoping that works given their experience with other Infectious Diseases but they dont know for sure. Laura martinez spoke with the doctor in charge. I came up the elevator the liquid gold they call it because it looks kind of golden. Reporter dr. Peter chen hong is likening liquid gold to this a bag of blood successfully recovered from covid19. We know they have been successful in fighting the infection. We can harvest antibodies as easy as giving blood and tran fuse it into a patient who may not have had those antibodies jept. Reporter on friday night doctors were able to transfer the first unit of plasma from a donor based out of palo alto to a person in the critical unit in the icu. They say its like a stun gun. There are two parts, making viruses and organ damage. We looked at by stunning the virus so at least its not making more so organs can heal over time. Reporter on saturday the World Health Organization weeted, quote, expect most people who are infected with covid19 will develop an antibody response that will provide some level of protection. What we dont know yet is the level of protection or how long it lasts. Some people do get protection and thats going to be probably the sickest people where your body is totally angry because theres a virus causing infection. Reporter doctors are asking adults to give plasma, give blood products if they have had covid19. Its taken a lot of tealwork and hospitals and blood banks to get the system in place but now they hope those who have will successfully recover from covid19 and step forward. Its here when we have the vaccine in 12 to 18 months. It really is upon us to find therapies that we use for sick patients when we need them. Reporter lauren martinez, abc7 news. Those who had have covid19 can donate only if you had no symptoms the pass 28 days. You can go to any blood and show some documentation you did test positive. And two people have been positived now in a hotel. It is linked to the casa questions addia building. 22 residents and 2 Staff Members tested positive and 17 negative. Many of the residents speak only spanish and have Underlying Health conditions. Officials moved all tenants into hotel rooms. This underscores a larger need for protection in the mission. Its seeing some of the highest infection rates in the city but this weekend comes with free covid19 testing for residents to study how the virus spreads and who it impacts. Abc7 news Cornell Bernard has the story. This is not a nice time. The germ is out there doing its thing so we have to stop it. Reporter Patricia Delgado doing her part to help stop covid19. Reporter delgado lives in the Mission District where thousands of residents are getting tested for free. Two tests are available, one for covid19 and the other can detect covid19 antibodies. The mission is showing some of the highest infection rates in the city. And the deaths amongst our people and in our community is devastating for latinos and africanamericans. Reporter the testing part pt a ucsf study to understand how it spreads. This will enable us to fight the virus better and more equitably across the our industry. Im latino. Reporter sergio la varietiy got tested with the hope it brings a vaccine closer. Its one piece of the puzzle and helps the entire world figure out whats happening and how deal with this. Reporter earlier this week the entire town of bolinas got tested. The results of that rural area will be compared to urban numbers from the mission to gain new understanding about the virus, how it moves and who it infects. But if it gives them the results they want in order to get the data, im willing to be a begin kbrig. Reporter the free testing continues until tuesday. Individuals should get their test results within 72 hours. Bigpicture results of the mission and bow leines studies should be available next month. Cornell bernard, abc7 news. In the east bay a cove testing site opens tomorrow at the Alameda County fair grounds. People with symptoms, chronic diseases or have been recently exposed can be tested. Yesterday we had more of that northerly wind and that allowed for the west wind to be kind of shut off. Were looking obviously as changes because of that fog out there right now, so that should allow for the cooler air to be transported into our inland valleys. You can see doubledigit wind gusts here by about 6 00, 7 00, at 15, 20 miles an hour. As we look at the fog, it is absent throughout the day today so a lot of sunshine. It does regroup, reform and move back closer to the bay tomorrow into monday. And it sets up from the san mateo coast. So another tempered day with temperatures in about a 20degree spread for monday. Highs today, a lot of sunshine, breezy at the coast. 67 in San Francisco, low 80s in santa rosa, 72 oakland and san mateo. Bigtime cooling here and looking at 78 in san jose. Not a lot of change on tap for your monday. Notice the oranges indicate the warmest weather, 60s to 70s around the bay. Then looking at tuesday, lears where the numbers will be encroaching 90 in spots and even warming through the bay but still nice in the 60s there. Big drop on wednesday. This could be the coolest day unless youre looking into a tenday outlook because it looks like we will continue to see these numbers trail off. Tennessee restaurants will be allowed open at 50 capacity. Colorado will allow personal Services Like dog grooming and personal training and minnesota will let Industrial Workers and Office Employees who cant work from home and dont face customers to go back on the job. But the looming threat of the virus will still keep millions of workers home. So many finding their business businesses crippled by an expanding economic crisis. Were basically doing 20 of the business we normally do on a monthly basis. You cant survive. 346 Congress Rushing to pump another 310 billion into the Paycheck Protection Program designed to help Small Businesses keep paying employees. What are the next phases of reopening for califonia . I spoke one on one this week with one of the leading experts who helped develop the plan states are using to safely reopen. Dr. Mark mcclellan are one of the authors for the roadmap to reopening. Reporter to understand whats ahead in the battle against coronavirus, theres no one better to speak with than dr. Mark mcclellan, expert and one of the directors in the roadmap to reopening. We wanted to lay out a clear path for effectively getting back towards a new normal as we live with this virus. Reporter there are four phases to reopen, phase one be, the phase were in now, slowing the spread. Phase two, gradual reopening state by state we hope to get to soon. Reporter when you say pretty soon . Matter of weeks, yeah. Not far off at all. Its checking some of the key boxes. Reporter the key boxes are the navigators be governor newson has been talking about, sustained decreases for 14 days and ability to do widespread testing and contact tracing.
