He said that this was actually more convenient because it allowed him to be closer to his family, so he did know about that program, but i mean, he has wifi in there as well. I think this is an image that shows how dire things are for medical professionals on the front lines. Youre completely right. Theres definitely aus component to this, because we see what those on the front lines are doing to protect their families. We saw people sleeping in garages getting ant bites. We saw people literally moving away from their families, sending their children off. This family, they seem to be in incredible spirits there. Hes even made jokes about being in the tree house. He did say, yes, it has wifi, but it doesnt have a working toilet. As you see, hes going through a lot there, as well as treating covid19 patients. We thank him and all of those on the front lines who are doing whatever they can. Coming up, reports of a second wave of covid19 cases even worse than the first . Our medical expert weighs in. Some even say people are going to stores just for fun because theyre bored. Workers groups want help from law enforcement. During this time of quarantine, a new concern, calls to poison control are surging. Cdc reports people are accidentally poisoning themselves with household cleaners as they try to disinfect. The Washington StatePoison Center says the spike started governors stayathome order. The victims are of all ages, some reportedly washed vegetables in bleach or hand sanitizer. Experts recommend diluting some products with water, follow label directions, and making sure there is ventilation. This might be a medical first. Breast implants may have saved a womans life. Details were recently released in a medical journal. The woman was walking down a street in toronto when she was shot. Doctors say the bullet broke one of her ribs, but they believe she survived because it hit one of her silicone implants. So call me a boob, i did not know this could happen. I see what you did there. That was the only joke i had, any more would get me in trouble. Coming up next half hour, celebrating earth day by rebuilding a garden. Are we talking about going natural . Oh, okay. First, the new reports on obesity being a major risk factor for covid19. The doctor whos now raising alarm over what this could mean for states who are already loosening social distancing. Are already loosen iing social distancing. As new yorkers appear to be on the other side of the plateau, new reports are suggesting there could be a second wave even worse than the first. I spoke earlier about that with dr. David eisenman. As always, thank you for joining us this morning. As we talk about reopening the country, the cdc director is warning that the second wave of covid19 next winter could be even worse when coupled with the normal flu season. Dr. Deborah birx from the White House Task force says we will have better ways to target the virus in the fall and better testing by then, but how confident are you about our preparedness for the second wave . Yes, so flu plus covid19 at the same time, thats a onetwo punch. Its going to be very hard for doctors and patients to tell them apart. Its going to make it incredibly important that we have tests for everybody. Everybodys going to need both a flu test and a covid19 test. So what this comes down to once again is the issue of massive scalingup of our testing. We are going to need to give that covid19 test to every possible flu patient. It also comes down to us having a really massive Vaccination Program for influenza so we can take that as much as possible out of the equation, and really building up our supply of influenza doses so that everybody who wants an influenza vaccination can get one. And a new preliminary study is warning that the antimalaria drug hydroxychloroquine, that drug has been touted by many people including the president , it has shown no benefit in helping coronavirus patients and more deaths among coronavirus patients given the drug. What can you say about this oncepromising treatment . Are we scaling back now . Its a flawed study. Its a retrospective review of records. So its the kind of study that in normal times, we would ignore, the media would not pick up, its not a good enough study to really tell us anything. But of course now were all hungry for something thats going to work. This doesnt seem to be showing that. We still need the randomized control trials that are the way we decide if drugs work, and those trials are ongoing. But in the meantime, the nih expert panel has recommended that doctors do not use the combination drug unless its part of a clinical trial. And finally, we know that obesity is a major factor when it comes to all sorts of health issues, including the coronavirus. We know this is a topic that you feel personally strongly about. Tell us what youre hearing regarding that risk factor. Well, theres alarming reports that have come out showing that in Young Persons obesity is a strong risk factor in the icu on a ventilator. This is really concerning. Were a country with one of the highest obesity rates in the world. And this effect on young people is particularly concerning because we have yet to see covid19 arrive in the same states that have the highest obesity rates. States in the midwest, states in the south. Parts of the south, states there have over 35 of adults are obese. So those states are at the same time not yet seeing the virus. We think its going to arrive there soon. Theyre relaxing their social distancing. And they have some of the highest rates of obesity among young adults in the nation. Its a very bad combination. And earlier dr. David eisenman also mentioned that that might be a factor as to why we initially believed maybe young people werent affected by the coronavirus in other countries, and were seeing those rates go higher in this country. Were also hoping by that time that we have additional Treatment Options for people with covid19 so that there will be additional treatment available in the fall. And dr. Birx said theyll also get Early Warning signals by continuing to monitor vulnerable segments of the population. As for the current situation, she noted that things are looking up in several areas.
