Paneste dil ones of ed frontline workers. Nuerf me authorities are saying that its testing that will drive when and how america can restart its economy. But some are saying that we have a long way to go still, so i spoke earlier with dr. Patel. Dr. Patel, as always, thank you so much for joining us this morning. Im going to jump right into it. You and other medical experts have stressed the need for more testing as a prerequisite to reopen the country. Where do you currently stand right now with widespread testing and what needs to happen to speed up that process . First of all, youre absolutely right in saying a lot of us in the medical and Scientific Community have been calling for more testing before we can even think about reopening the economy. Where we stand right now, i dont have a nice way to put this, is like a supply chain disaster. Because even though people are celebrating that we have 2 million, weve done 2 million to 2. 5 million tests, per capita, with the amount of tests per Million People, were behind some other countries, including italy, south korea, germany. We need to be doing a lot more. And speaking of those Antibody Tests, could this be a siler bullet, lets say. We hope its a Silver Bullet in terms of telling us whos been exposed and who might be immune to this coronavirus. But theres a lot of shades of gray. For example, the fdas only approved one Antibody Test right now. We dont have a lot of data from it. Theres 70 to 90 other companies who are currently selling their products right now, but they havent been fda approved. Vent necessarily been t verified, so we dont really know how accurate they are. As far as antibodies telling us were immune, basic immunology tells us if you get an infection, youll get an antibody response that should protect you against this coronavirus in the same way it does any other virus. But we dont know whos immune, how long it takes to get immune, or even how long that immunity lasts. Previous studies looking at the sars virus suggest it could last for a couple of years. But right now its all speculation. We just need to get more of those tests out there and start to see what they show. And theres been new research in the last 24 hours raising the possibility of people getting infected twice or at least having the virus reactivate in their bodies. What are you hearing about that risk . One big thing im hearing regarding that is all the comments coming out of south korea right now. And theres a lot of headlines saying, this large amount of south korean patients have had a reactivated viral infection, meaning they were negative, now theyve tested positive. Now again, the w. H. O. Openly said they want to investigate those because you could actually get this scenario from a variety of different reasons. Two big ones is the first test could be false negatives, meaning they werent actually accurate. Thats something thats been seen previously. The w. H. O. Actually has documented cases of false negatives. But also, and this is important, its possible people can improve clinically, meaning theyre no longer feeling sick symptoms, and they could still have a little bit of the viral genetic material in their body, and they could still test positive. And so one thing that people arent seeing right now is the virus is somehow dormant and can reactivate again. That happens in a few viruses, one big example is chicken pox, where that can happen. As of right now, scientists dont believe that happens with coronavirus. So well know more as the investigation goes out. And more data is released from those patients who purportedly were negative, then tested positive. A lot of great information from dr. Patel, our thanks to him. I asked him about a study in brazil about hydroxychloroquine, the president touting that antimalaria drug as a potential treatment. This study reporting patients who received a higher dose of the drug suffered heart complications, sometimes fatal heart complications. He said this stresses two thing, the shows there are serious side effects when it comes to taking that drug, also that it needs to be taken under strict supervision. A lot of great information from dr. Patel. People need to have all the information when it comes to potential treatments and those side effects. And obviously we say every day, were still learning so much about the coronavirus every day. As the doctors and the medical professionals and researchers learn about it, we learn about it, and were giving that information to you. When we come back, the mix. When we come back, the mix.
