And larry, we rode along with sheriffs deputies from the Crime Prevention bureau out of the eden valley substation here in san leandro. Normally theyd be going to places to keep businesses and homes safe from crime. But now theyre trying to keep them from becoming a victim of something else. Following all the guidelines here. Its ten feet, which is great. Sergeant oscar perez showed us how this Castro Valley bank of america is keeping customers even farther apart than recommended. But that doesnt mean were out of danger. The order is about protecting the people who protect us. The governor also addressed concerns that minority communities represented disproportionate number of coronavirus cases, but very preliminary numbers dent show that in california. The governor says just 37 of the states nearly 17,000 positive cases have been broken down demographically so far. And at this point, latinos make up 30 of the total cases and 29 of deaths. Asians represent 14 of cases, 16 of deaths, and African Americans represent 6 of cases and 3 of deaths. Those numbers track roughly with population numbers in the state. While californias preliminary data isnt showing disproportionate numbers, that doesnt seem to be the case nationally. According to the washington post, blacks nationwide have three times the rate of infections and almost six times the rate of deaths. Abc7 News Reporter Amy Hollyfield has the details. The federal government confirmed what many feared, black americans are dying of coronavirus at much higher rates compared to other African Americans in other cities. Dr. Anthony fauci says existing Health Disparities have made this Health Outbreak worse for africanamericans. Unfortunately, when you look at the predisposing conditions tat lead to a bad outcome with coronavirus, the things that get people into icus that require intubation and often lead to death, they are just those very comorbidities that are unfortunately disproportionate in the African American population. One east bay activist says you just need to look at conditions like this to see those disparities. He was not surprised by this news. The reaction is we already knew this. Its disproportionate, its been disproportionate for years. Inequity of our community. He serves on the Alameda County Illegal Dumping task force. He says he was already worried about how the virus would hit the African American community and had sent a letter to several county officials. He said this should be a wakeup call on many issues. Oakland officials telling me here that 70 of their Homeless Population is made up of African Americans. And leaders in oakland say they have been in intense talks about this issue for several days. In the east bay, Amy Hollyfield, abc7 news. Today on midday live, oakland mayor libby schaaf told our kris citizten sze that her s looking to move Homeless People into hotels. As well as it may seem like were doing, as you can see, those numbers are still going up. And we anticipate that they would be even higher, and the worst is yet to come. Mayor breed also talked about the importance of Mental Health during this challenging time. I wish i could give you better news, but i think you know the truth. And that is that we are now some 300 delegates behind Vice President biden, and the path toward victory is virtually impossible. Sanders called the decision difficult and painful. He thanked his supporters, and pledged to continue the movement they helped to create. He congratulated presumptive nominee joe biden and vowed to work with him Going Forward. However, sanders said he will stay on the ballot in all remaining states and will continue to gather delegates. Biden issued a statement calling sanders a good man and a great lead. And made a direct pitch to his supporters saying, quote, i know that i need to earn your vote, and i know that might take time, but i want you to know that i see you, i hear you, and i understand the urgency of this movement. More families in San Francisco received laptops today as the School District hopes to begin Online Learning on monday. But the biggest challenge has been providing Internet Service to those families. Abc7 News Reporter Lyanne Melendez tells whats they propose. With a new chrome book came orders to return them once schools reopen in the fall. In the meantime, these devices will be a students entry into an online classroom. For nicholas, he is excited to get that computer and connect to the teacher and his classmates. He is super excited. San francisco unified has distributed 8,000 devices a is still trying to reach out to families who need them. So were sending phone calls. Were sending emails. Were sending texts to let them know where they can pick up a device, how they can get one for their child. On monday, when phase three of Distance Learning begins, teachers warn there will be a few bugs. Its not going to be perfect. Were going to be problem solving as we go. Getting a laptop in the hands of families has been a huge undertaking, but the biggest challenge remains providing Internet Service for all. So here is what they are doing to bring that gap. The district has Internet Companies providing either free or low cost service to the neediest families. The second plan is to place superspots in some neighborhoods. That allow for multiple connections at the same time. Finally, 1500 of these hot spots have been given out. These are routers connected to a cell service. 5,000 more have been ordered. The district says private companies have spped up to donate or pay for most of this equipment. In San Francisco, Lyanne Melendez, abc7 news. Students at berkeley Public Schools wont get lessons for now over zoom and google meet. The School District today temporarily suspended use of the videoconferencing sites due to a zoom bombing incident. That d pls teachers will use other online conferencing platforms and recorded lectures. Because of the statewide shelter in place, were seeing one industry starting to suffer major blows. And were talking about the milk business. Maybe youve seen these unusual scenes popping up all around the country. Dairies are flushing tons and tons of usable milk right down the drain, and its happening here too. One dairy union in the state estimates about 10 of milk is getting dumped right now, largely because all School Cafeterias and many restaurants are closed. That means dire losses for californias agriculture industry. Lets think about it. California, the largest state in the country. The fifth largest economy. Ag is the number one, bigger than tech, bigger than anybody. State supply member jim cooper spoke at the new hope dairy earlier today in sacramento county. He says he is currently working with lawmakers to sign off on emergency relief for the dairy industry. Panera bread is offering something new. Being prepared and overcoming challenges. Usaa has been standing with them for nearly a hundred years. And well be here to serve you for a hundred more. 2020 has been a rough year for many of us, especially for basketball star sabrina ionescu. In january, her friend and mentor kobe bryant died in a helicopter crash. Just a few weeks ago, the coronavirus shut down her dreams of winning an ncaa championship with the oregon ducks. Now sabrina is back home in walnut creek, ahead to a career in the wnba, and she joined us on our with authority pod. Chris alvarez joined me for that chat and is live from home. I think everybody that hears or meets sabrina will instantly fall in love with her. She is terrific. Yeah, youre exactly right, larry. Biggest fans myself, larry, the whole bay area. She hails from right here in the bay area, miramonte high school, went to oregon. Best player in Womens College basketball. She is a great person as well. You mention herd connection with kobe. Today we confirmed she even got a workout in with steph curry, at a safe distance. Sabrina, i was on instagram today, and saw one of your latest posts. Youre six feet away. Was that from today . Yeah, i was literally just with him now. What is your relationship like with steph . I mean, hes been my favorite player for ten years now since hes been the league, and its been cool to just see kind of that relationship grow from him not knowing who i was and me watching him as a rookie until now were both kind of on the scene, basketball players from the bay area. So how are you justea ormal in . Yeah, i mean, its definitely unfortunate, especially looking back at memories from a year ago and seeing that we were at the final four last year, and then realizing that last sunday would have been the National Championship game. It is unfortunate not being able to celebrate and hopefully have been there with my team. But still working out. Still getting in the gym. No matter where you go, youre always from here. So the bay area, what does it mean to you and how do you plan on promoting the bay area . Yeah, i was born, you know, alt cre, raised in walnut creek, still live in walnut creek. I love it here. I love being able to come back and play here. Im happy the wnba isnt like a fulltime job. It is three to four months, but then there is a lot of time to be able to come back home and be able to impact the community here, get back to my schools and give back to them. So i am excited to have that opportunity to do that to a city that gave so much to me. You got to like everything she said. We spoke to her for more than 30 minutes. Well get that with authority up as soon as possible. We all know she so to the first pick to new york in a week in the wnba draft. She has so many great people in her phone. She was great. I dont know what to say. Great stuff from sabrina today. I just love how she said she and her brother used to find easy marks at lunchtime and when they were kids growing up at pickup games and make these bets, and then get money for slurpees. And she said if she saw us out there, she definitely would have taken our money. She is just great. Taking our lunch money for sure. For sure. The podcast will be up as soon as we can post it. And everybody can enjoy. Thank you, chris. Evenced b ea. But it appears one popular San Francisco event is still a go, at least for now. Whats happening with sf pride, coming up. Plus, more closures as now your health, your safety. This is abc7 news. Conflicting messages are circulating about whether sf pride and its parade is happening in june. As it stands right now, the parades board of directors is still making plans to go on with the event. Stephanie sierra is live along Market Street with the latest. Stephanie . Ama, its certainly a fluid decisionmaking process at this point. But the view behind me really says it all. Were at the corner of fremont and market, and with the exception of a few cars and people walking around, it is a ghost town here at this hour. And it may very well be that way in june for the parade. But the bottom line is the board of directors are in talks right now, trying tocheers, massive c waving sign, even champagne its a sight we likely wont be seeing at the sf pride parade come june as concerns over covid19 continue, there is legitimate fear whether hosting a large scale event drawing in more than a Million People is realistic and safe. Were in a different reality. And i think its important first of all as dr. Coal flfax said, cant predict the future. We dont know whats going to happen as this progresses. Mayor london breed pointing out it will take time to get the city back to some sense of normalcy. It may not be possible to expect that we could launch a large scale event with millions of people descending on San Francisco. I just am not sure if thats going to be realistic. But if you ask carolyn weisinger, the board president of sf pride, there is still hope. Right now all the options are on the table. We see so many things with this situation changing every day. Sf prides executive director fred lopez released this statement tuesday, saying the 50year anniversary celebration will look very different, different as in downsizing. sun significant the changes will be. But as weisinger pointed out, safety will be the priority. Remember how many of our community is vulnerable to this particular virus. When they say people who have existing conditions, that means so many things, not just hiv and aids. I mean people who dont have Proper Health care. Now we are expected to hear a final decision by late next week. And of course well keep a close eye on it. Live in San Francisco, stephanie sierra, abc7 news. Thank you. Chronicle insider and abc7 news news contributor phil matier joins us right now. A lot to talk about starting with the pride plans stephanie was just discussing. Is this just Wishful Thinking o before june comes up, but whats your take on this . Well, what we have is a situation. We didnt have opening day for baseball, the Cherry Blossom festival. There is a number of events all across the nation that are either being canceld or being looked at with the idea of maybe scaling them back or just not having them. And gay pride is one of those. The question is, is it going to be smaller . Is it going to be symbolic, but were not back in the way we were before . The Mayors Office get assay in this as well, because the city issues the permits for the Market Street parade, to close down the street, and for the civic center celebration. If theyre going to need city permits, theyre going to have to talk health. Theyre going have to talk health and public safety. Ed will, larry, there is a question even if there is was a celebration, how many people would want to fly in and be part of it given the conditions of todays health. Thats a great point. Im not sure that people want to be in large groups right now. But again, we got until june. Lets move on to bart. Your story in the chronicle today mentioning fare evasion is still a problem, even though ridership is down more than 93 . Yeah. It is pretty amazing. What we have is ridership has dropped. You can imagine its like a tide pool, and the water has all gone out of it. But the fare evaders, some of them bad actors, are still going through at the same rate. As a matter of fact, just a couple of days ago they pulled 238 of them out for not paying their fares. Its one thing not to pay your fares, but were also talking sometimes about the homeless and the mentally ill and others who get on the trains and spend the day there. And thats what i saw when i was on bart. Its not so much that anybody is acting out or violent, although there have been cases of that. What we have is people with no place else to go. And theyre going on to the bart trains. And theyre riding them. They did that before we had the pandemic, but it wasnt noticed as much because there are other passengers in there. But now we have essential workers traveling with this we have them in ty, l i say, a lot more of the homeless are on there. So there are questions of health being raised. Is this okay to be doing . Somebody getting on in San Francisco and riding around throughout the bay area . Police and bart officials are doing their best. Theyve had to, however, suspend their fare check proposals because, one, theyre concerned about their workers getting the virus. So theyve taken them off the trains and out of the underground platforms on the San Francisco stations and put them up around the gates to sort of say visually dont try to get. In but even then, larry, its tough. Because what were starting to see is some city workers, county workers and people, they are starting to take time off, either because they have child care issues or for health reasons. So the force keeping an eye on things is getting tougher to provide as well. Let me get to one last story outside of covid19. Bernie sanders suspending his race for the presidency. So will we see joe biden . We will see biden versus trump in november. The key question being can biden win the support of bernies followers Going Forward into november . Well, thats a tough one. First of all, bernie said he is going to stay on the ballot. So sanders supporters can continue to vote for him, can continue to collect delegates and continue to become a force if there is a convention. This is our platform, universal health care, free college, debt forgiveness, things like that. Now joe bidens trick is going to have to be to sort of match their aspirations, say come on board, join us without going so far as to alienate some of the people that think thats going too far. T. Ats what politics is all you dont often have solutions. What you have is sort of a balancing act. And thats going to be up to biden to try to provide Going Forward. Hes got the nomination, but winning that seat in november is a completely different game, and its going to take every vote he can get, including sanders supporter. Thank you, phil. Phil matier also the chronicles insider. You can read his columns on wednesdays and sundays. Ama . We have much more to come. Just ahead, the ban at some nearby beaches, and what could happen if you go anyway. In partnership with feeding america, abc is staging a day of hope. As of midnight tonight, surf willing be banned in santa cruz county. Health officials are also closing parks and beaches. Dustin dorsey has the details. What we want is our own Community Members to stay at home, and we dont want people from other counties coming into santa cruz county. Strong words from sheriff jim hart following a strong ord osed to prevent the threat of coronavirus. What were asking is for people to stop the activities that theyre doing. Stop surfing, stop grouping up. Theyre going to have to stop going to the parks. Were all making sacrifices right now. This just a temporary thing. But in order to keep our Community Members safe, some people who want to be surfing right now are just going to have to stop. The Sheriffs Department has already issued more than 80 citations for not following californias shelter in place orders and fines will total up to 1,000. People can still go for walks in neighborhoods, but bans include skate parks, dog parks and other recreational areas. The response from residents mixed. Some upset their privileges are taken away. Others understanding of the attempt to flatten the curve. All with hopes that the ban doesnt last too long. Theyve got to do whatever they have got to do. The people that arent taking it seriously are the reason they have the new restrictions. Hopefully everybody behaves so that we can still enjoy the privilege of being this the fresh air and the ocean. The order is set to end april 15th in an attempt to keep people away during spring break. But chief hart says life will go back to normal when officials believe its safe to do so. I dont like giving people false hope. I think were in for the long haul on this thing personally. In santa cruz county, dustin dorsey, abc7 news. This is interesting, because as a guy who loves surfing, i would probably make the argument to officials that im out in the middle of the ocean. Its the safest place i could possibly be. But spencer, i mean, you dont know about the community spread. You dont know if its in the air. So even though it appears that you might be safer out there, maybe not. Yeah. You know, larry, given the gravity of this situation, i dont understand why anybody would not just go along with the plan and, you know, just were only asking people for about a month to not put yourself and other people in jeopardy.
