After more than a week with a high fever from covid19. His pregnant fiancee also suffering symptoms. President trump vowing to send help to his friend and ally. The latest on his condition this morning. Aircraft carrier clash. Overnight, the acting Navy Secretary apologizing for that rant caught on camera calling that captain he fired naive and stupid. So think about that when you cheer the man off the ship. I did President Trump weighs in. Search for a treatment. President trump hails that malaria drug as a game changer in the fight against covid19, while medical experts raise questions and rush to prove it works. What we do and dont know this morning as patients and families seek answers. Big cat concerns. More animals showing coronavirus symptoms after that tiger tested positive at the bronx zoo. What it could all mean for you and your pets. I need a hero and our Health Care Heroes holding down the front lines, the nurses not giving up, the doctors dancing it out and the paramedics fighting to keep us safe and our spirits up on this years world health day. Good morning, america. Happy to be with you on this tuesday morning. Robin and george are joining us from home on this world health day. Hey. Hey, good morning, michael. You know, today is especially special because of all that is going on and our Health Care Heroes are working, as we know, tirelessly around the clock to keep all of us safe and some as we know have vy lile protection. The line to protect the lives of others. And we cannot say it enough, thank you, thank you, thank you. That is the reason why we are staying at home. George, i know youre home and we all hope ali is feeling better this morning. I love to be able to report every morning when we come on that shes still asleep, and she is. I havent heard a cough since about 3 00 a. M. Thats good news and she appreciates all the well wishes. One day at a time but its looking like progress. Thank you. Thats good. We want to get to the latest on what we do know about the covid19 crisis. The death toll has topped 10,000 but nearly 20,000 americans have now recovered from the virus and thats the good news right there. There are also indications that the curves are starting to tein to be votingotg due todayhere to the coronavirus. That was backed up by the u. S. Supreme court, a divided u. S. Supreme court. Well talk about that with the Surgeon General. The Surgeon General, were going to talk to him in a few moments, that interview you did with him. First we begin with tom ni mas wos outsidng reporr ichatoou. Asons poss sidents not breckle you see behind me in brooklyn are working around the clock to keep up with all the cases. A nurse here tells me they work 12 to 16hour shifts, no break, no time to eat. Theyre too busy saving lives. This morning, hospitals across new york trying to hold on. The rate of cases may be stabilizing, but the pressure still rising. Every one of these patients who comes in needs oxygen, some of them need ventilation. We had to put 14 patients on ventilators in a 12hour period just yesterday. D John Marshall guiding abc news through the e. R. Of brooklyns maimonides hospital. We see doctors and nurses, ppe shielding everything but the intensity in their eyes, monitoring vital signs, fighting to keep patients alive. We have Health Care Workers reporter outside we speak to the head of surgery about the days ahead, worries of a surge, talk of the apex. So many unknowns. How long do you think you can keep going . What do you think . Well absolutely keep going until this damn thing is over. We wont stop or give up and its hard and people are getting tired but were not going to stop and were not going to slow down. Reporter that will to beat the virus has helped. But even the governor worries how long can it last . This is a Hospital System where we have our foot to the floor, and the engine is at redline and you cant go any faster and, by the way, you cant stay at redline for any period of time because the system will blow. Reporter with more than 130,000 cases in the state, Governor Andrew Cuomo announcing hospital admissions are now down and the daily fatality rate hitting what appears to be a plateau over the last few days. The numbers look like they may be turning. Yay, its over. No, its not. Reporter the governor adamant people continue to follow social distancing guidelines, increasing fines of violators to 1,000. This is serious. What right do you have to act irresponsibly in a way that could get you sick or someone else sick . Reporter leona hernandez, an icu nurse from minnesota, is getting ready to leave her husband and three Young Children for two months, joining the front lines in new york city. We call her the shes the superhero. Theyre like, shes not a real superhero, reporter the volunteer effort co effort comes as a new report from the health and Human Services office of Inspector General reveals more than 300 hospitals had Major Concerns two weeks ago about lab results taking too long and not enough staff to run those ventilators if they were to get them, problems seen across the country and now in detroit. At Beaumont Hospital we have less than three days until n95 masks run out. At Henry Ford Health system we have less than four days, and at the detroit medical center, less than ten days. At all three health systems, there are less than three days until face shields run out. In less than six days until surgical gowns run out. Reporter in louisiana, hospital admissions trending downward. The governor there saying they may be seeing a flattening of the cu i dont expect somebody to snap their fingers and all of a sudden all these patients are gone. That flattening of the curve, it will last a while but well stay underneath the capacity line and be able to take care of patients that are coming in. Reporter and one more hopeful sign this morning. California joining washington and oregon in donating ventilators, 500 of them, many of which will end up right here in new york. Californias governor hopeful at least for right now they may be flattening the curve in the golden state. George . Okay, tom, thanks. Were joined by the Surgeon General, dr. Jerome adams. Welcome back, dr. Adams. Thank you for joining us this morning. You know, a couple of days ago you said this is going to be our pearl harbor moment, the hardest week for so Many Americans. Do you still believe that or do you have more cause for optimism this morning . The answer is both. I absolutely believe this is going to be an incredibly sad and an incredibly hard week for our country but weve had tough times in this country before and we always come out of it stronger. The good news is that when you look at italy, when you look at spain, when you look at washington and california, and even new york and new jersey, they have truly started to flatten their curves. Theyve seen cases level off and start to come down and thats what i want people to understand, that its going to be a hard and tough week but the American People have the power to change the trajectory of this epidemic if we come together like we have after past tragedies in this country. So you have confidence in those signs out of new york and new jersey that theres some concern that maybe hospitals have lowered their standards for hospitalization or changed their standards for hospitalizations so maybe theyre not putting in people who before they would have hospitalized . Well, initially we were looking at an array of projections based on different peoples best guesses. We now have data. The data, the facts tell us china and south korea are starting to reopen, that italy and spain are definitely on the downslopes of their curves, that washington and california have flattened their curves because they were aggressively mitigating from the start. The most important thing for the American People now is to really focus on these 30 days to slow the spread guidelines because we have proof that they work. Weve seen them work, but we need you all to cooperate. We need you to continue doing your part and most people actually are. Over 90 of the country is actually doing the right thing right now. Eight states are holding out from stayathome orders. Should all 50 states now be under stayathome orders . Well, george, i actually think that there is a lot of talk about that, but not enough talk about the fact that, when you look at the cell phone data thats publicly available and when you look at surveys, most people actually are doing the right thing in staying at home. Its also important to note that even in new york, Governor Cuomo when we talked about a federal quarantine a week ago which is forever ago now in coronavirus time, he said that would be like declaring war on the states. And so we dont really have a good mechanism to enforce this at the federal level as much as the states have the authority. But we really want to work with the states and were working with governors, talking with them every single day, working with states to give them the information they need to make the right choices and the people are making the right choice. Thats what it comes down to. It will happen at the community level. And so is it reasonable to expect that were really not going to see a return to normal until we have a widely available vaccine, widely available testing . Well, we know that normal is going to be a different normal whenever we do reopen. We know that, once we get a vaccine, we can get more back to the way we treat flu season but weve got promising therapeutics, hundreds of trials going on across the country. And we know that once we get testing out there more widely available and were going to be at 2 million tests by the end of the week. And once we have a strong infrastructure in place to follow it up and isolate case contacts we will be able to get back to some sense of normalcy and right now were watching china and south korea closely t but i want the American People to know there is a light at the end of this tunnel and we feel confident that if we keep doing the right thing for the rest of this month that we can start to slowly reopen in some places. The director of the cdc says yesterday that he expects the death toll to come in under those horrible projections we saw earlier in the week, 100,000 to 240,000. Is that your expectation as well . Well, thats absolutely my expectation and i feel a lot more optimistic, again, because im seeing mitigation work. I am so impressed. I know i said it a couple of times with washington and with california. Their Public Health officials should be applauded because theyve given us the blueprint for how we deal with this in the rest of the country. And i really do believe that we will come in under those projections as long as we continue to do our part for 30 days staying at home, avoiding unnecessary travel, not gathering in large groups. A lot of voters in wisconsin are going to have to face that dilemma this morning. As you know, the election is going to go forward in the state of wisconsin today and Justice Ginsburg said in her dissent from that opinion approving the election, quote, the voters will either have to brave the polls endangering their own and others safety or they will lose their right to vote through no fault of their own. As a Public Health official, as Surgeon General, what is your recommendation to the citizens of wisconsin this morning . Should they go vote . Well, my recommendation is that if you can vote remotely and im not familiar with what other options they have available. But please do that if you can. If you cant then please try to maintain six feet of distance between you and the next nearest person and also please this is one situation where i would really say consider wearing a cloth facial covering. I have a video out you can easily look up and make one out of Household Items in just a few minutes so that you can protect your neighbor. Remember, we wear these cloth facial coverings to protect our neighbors. I wear mine to protect you and you wear yours to protect me. If you go out to vote wear one to protect your neighbors because were all in this together. Dr. Adams, thanks for your time this morning. Thank you. So, robin, we saw real optimism from the Surgeon General this morning but also that message we have got to be vigilant. Yes, we do have to be vigilant but it is encouraging george, youre right about that. We do have the latest on british Prime MinisterBoris Johnson. He has been moved to the intensive care unit. Ian pannell is standing by in london. Good morning, ian. Reporter yeah, good morning, robin. When Boris Johnson was admitted the the hospital yesterday, he said he was there for routine tests. Clearly his condition deteriorated. He was admitted into intensive care. He was given oxygen and were told he was there just in case he needed a ventilator. We have an update from downing street staying hes stable, in good spirits. Yes, he needed oxygen to assist in breathing, but otherwise managing well on his own. He didnt have a ventilator. That will be a huge relief to all those thousands of well wishers around the country and also the World Leaders including President Trump who offered their support and prayers to Boris Johnson. Of course in particular this will be a huge relief to Boris Johnsons family especially liz his fiance who is heavily pregnant with Boris Johnsons child. Shes alone and cant visit him. This will be a huge relief. Michael . All right, ian, thank you so much for that. Now to the new development involving the coronavirus, stricken aircraft carrier, the acting Navy Secretary now walking back those comments he made to the crew about the ships fired captain. Martha raddatz has the latest. Reporter it is no secret how the crew of the roosevelt felt about captain crozier being relieved of duty. These videos posted on social media by the crew just days ago make that clear. Cheering in support of the captain who had written a letter pleading for help for the ship as coronavirus was spreading throughout. Then monday the man who fired crozier, thomas modly, addressed the same crew flying to guam only to have an audio recording made of his remarks over the public address system leaked to the military focussed media outlet task and purpose. Modly on the tape belittles crozier. If he didnt think that information was going to get out in the public then, he was, a, too naive or too stupid to be the Commanding Officer of a ship like this. What the [ bleep ] . Reporter that bleeped part at the end of the recording, what the blank, a crew member listening to the speech. You hear voices on the ship sounding disgusted with modlys accusations throughout the recording, although modly would not have heard them as he continued his speech it was betrayal and i can tell you one other thing, because he did that, he put it in the publics forum and its now become a big controversy. So think about that when you cheer the man off a ship i did. Who exposed you to that. Reporter while modly now says he apologizes to the crew and crozier and his family for any pain his comments caused, he also took another swipe at the captain saying he does think he sent that letter for help to draw public attention. Robin . All right, martha, thank you very much. Now were going to highlight some of our countrys credible heroes on the front lines in honor of world health day. Take a look. Remember this photo we showed you last week, those brave Health Care Workers who flew from atlanta to new york city to help . Well, now they are on the front lines and they sent us a message. Take a look. I flew in from atlanta to new york to help fight the crisis. Why ive been a nurse, its simple. I love helping people. I am proud to be a nurse. I love nursing. Well get through this together. Were all in this together. Please stay home. Stay home. Ah, you heard them there, please stay home. They left home to come to new york city and help out like that, michael. It was wonderful to hear that message and to see they are doing well. Dont you think . Its incredible to see it, robin. We cant thank them enough for all theyre doing. We really cant. You two, hang around. Dont go anywhere. You at home hang around too. Coming up, we have the search for a treatment. President trump touting that antimalaria drug. His experts saying there is no proof yet that it works. What we do and dont know about it right now. The latest on the covid emergency here in the united the death toll has topped 10,000, as new york reports more than 130,000 cases. One sign of hope from Governor Andrew Cuomo is that he does believe that hospital admissions are down and the daily fatality rate is hitting what may be a plateau. Weve seen similar signs in places like new jersey, washington, california. Good news out of the stock market yesterday. Set to open this morning after the third highest point gain ever. It surged more than 1,600 points yesterday. Robin . That is a great sign. We know a lot of people missing the Wonderful World of sports. Well, baseball could be making a comeback sooner than we think. Espn is reporting that the mlb is working on a plan to start the season as early as next month with all 30 teams playing in arizona. Ive seen so many of these games. Congrats to your saints. Who dat going to beat those saints . Nobody. Thank you very much. We turn to the tiger that tested positive for coronavirus at the bronx zoo. More big cats are showing symptoms that raises the question whether your pets are at risk. Will reeve joins us from outside the zoo. Good morning, will. Reporter hey, good morning, michael. That test on the tiger was done at a usda Veterinary Lab and officials here at the bronx zoo are adamant that the test on animals are entirely different from and unrelated to the ones done on humans but learning more about the virus and how it is transmitted is essential for keeping people and animals safe. This morning, officials at the bronx zoo, home to the first animal in the United States to test positive for covid19, say they still arent certain who infected a tiger there. Staff had the infection and were spreading, you know, the virus unknowingly. Reporter the 4yearold malayan tiger named nadia was born at the zoo in 2016 making her public debut alongside her sister and now seven big cats in total including two more tigers and three lions are sick. All of the tigers and lions that got sick had a cough. It was a dry cough, not a productive cough. Theres no treatment that is known to work. So weve treated just similar mat cli. Reporter the zoo also taking extra precautions for the staff who interact with the sick animals. All of the big cats are expected to make a full recovery but the concerning revelation that animals can be infected has many worried about their pets at home. There have been reports of several cats and dogs testing positive for coronavirus overseas but according to the cdc, no pets in the United States have been sickened and there is currently no evidence that pets can pass coronavirus back to their owners. A people should not be concerned about their pets giving them covid. If your pet has it, its more likely you gave it to them or someone else in your household. Reporter a veterinarian told us if your pet somehow has coronavirus, its more likely that you or a loved one at home passed it to them. Theres a real incentive, michael, to be as cautious and take as much precaution as you possibly can. Thats what were doing using these protective masks when were not broadcasting. Every bit of precaution helps. Thank you so much, will. Well bring in dr. Jennifer ashton who joins us now to answer your questions about pets and coronavirus, and, doc, thank you for joining us this morning. We have a lot of questions from our viewers. So tell us what we know about pets getting the virus. Well, very limited data published in the medical and veterinary medical literature thus far as we just heard from will but we do have to remember coronaviruses in general are known to infect animals. So its interesting that the very few dogs and cats and now large cats that have been tested positive for covid19, theyre showing the same strain as humans. So the implication is, as will said, that humans passed it to dogs and cats but no evidence that these animals are being made sick. Yeah, cdc says there is no evidence the pets can transmit the virus to humans. But do we need to be concerned about the pets carrying it on their fur . Well, we dont know because that has not been officially and formally researched yet. But thats why the cdc and the American Veterinary Medical Association really suggests if someone if a human is sick and its implied or assumed they have covid19, that they keep their distance from their pets just as they would other people. You know, we know that the virus can survive on hard surfaces. Its not known if it can live on fur. Obviously you cant use a bleach wipe on your pet. But thats why, you know, maybe wiping them off with water once in a while if thats possible for dogs, not cats as much, but really treating them as you would another person and keeping your distance if you dont feel well. Asymptomatic spread, we dont know what we can do about that to protect the pets. The thing is a lot of people have pets as their comfort so its a tough time to stay away from your pets. But it is what is necessary at is this point. Dr. Ashton, thank you so much for that. George . Michael, thanks. Were getting more on that search for a treatment for covid19. As you know the president has repeatedly touted the antimalarial drug hydroxychloroquine despite questions raised by his own medical team who warn the treatment hasnt been adequately tested for safety and effectiveness. Kaylee hartung has a look at what we know and dont know about the drug. Good morning, kaylee. Reporter good morning, george. What are the risks and does it work . Those are the questions that need to be answered about hydroxychloroquine. And, as this debate continues to wage in the white house with tensions growing, President Trump has asked what do you have to lose . Medical experts say your life. Its the hotly debated drug the president is calling a game changer in the fight against covid19. Hydroxychloroquine. Weve had some unbelievable results, unbelievable results, and it also gives the people hope. Reporter President Trump touting the medication despite conflicting opinions from his advisers. His trade adviser Peter Navarro backing use of the drug and reportedly butting heads with the president s medical experts who warn theres not enough Scientific Evidence to prove it can treat coronavirus. The president even stepping in sunday to stop dr. Anthony fauci about answering questions about the drug. Would you also weigh in on this issue of hydroxychloroquine . What do you think about this and do you know how many times hes answered that question . Its a question for the doctor. 15 times. Reporter based on results seen in some patients around the world, hydroxychloroquine may shorten a patients hospital stay and improve their outcome by interfering with the virus ability to bind to human cells. What do you have to lose . Reporter but medical experts caution there are also possible side effects including seizures, liver problems, nausea, vomiting and potentially fatal heart arrhythmias. Governor cuomo saying monday hes seeing some promising results in new york where hospitals are allowed to use hydroxychloroquine in conjunction with azythromycin, also known as a zpak, that may help boost the effects. Anecdotally its been positive. Well have a full test once they have a large enough sample. Reporter dr. David boulware from the university of minnesota is leading two fdaapproved trials. Weve been able to recruit over 700 patients in the last three weeks and hope to get a result in the next three weeks. Reporter this morning a democratic lawmaker from michigan is thanking the president for making it easier to prescribe the drug after she says it helped her overcome the virus. It actually saved my life within a couple hours. Made all the difference in the world. Reporter not everyone responds well to this course of treatment. Jim cassas is still fighting for his life on a ventilator after he was given the drugs. His daughter begging for alternative treatment. So many thousands of peoples lives are at risk because there is nothing set in place for people like my dad. This is a plea and a cry for help. Reporter there are many Clinical Trials and off label use of this promising medication out there. Doctors remind us, if you are severely ill with covid19, this drug will be considered for your treatment, but they have to do that on a case by case basis taking very careful consideration of the risks to each patients. So doctors say dont try to source this medication on your own. George . Yeah, youve got to listen to your doctors. Kaylee, thanks very much. Well be right back. Back now on gma and a question on a lot of peoples minds as we try to stop the spread of covid19, if you have to go out, how do you safely reenter your home and lower the risk of bringing the virus back home with you . Becky worley asked an expert and she joins us now from san francisco. Good morning, becky. Reporter good morning, robin. To keep their home safe, some people are engaging in hazmat level decontamination at the front door. But what are the best practices for staying safe when you come home . To find out we asked a researcher who studies viruses like covid19 how she reenters her house. Coming from the outside world back home feels significantly more treacherous these days. So we asked dr. Angela rasmusen, a researcher from Columbia University who studies viruses, how she disinfects after a trip, say, to the grocery store. So heres what i do when i get in the car. Reporter it starts here when she leaves the store. Take my Hand Sanitizer, and sanitize reporter when she gets home her immediate routine has a focus. Before touching my face or touching any other surfaces in the house, im going to wash my hands for 20 seconds with soap and warm water. Reporter she says coats, purses and fabrics dont need special treatment. There has not been any reports of coats or clothing being a significant transmission risk for covid. Reporter but she does think about her phone. Robin, i got to tell you, you stole my excuse on the dancing. You dont dance, george. Yeah, really, come on. No. Nice try though, george. We do have a lot of news well played. Doing my best. We do have a lot of news to get to this morning on this Coronavirus Crisis. The death toll topped 10,000 in in the United States but nearly 20,000 people have recovered so far across the nation and there are some signs of plateaus in some of the hardest hit states but still hospitals facing a tough week and tom llamas is outside one of those hard working hospitals in brooklyn. Good morning, tom. Reporter george, good morning to you. Ive spoken now with doctors in new york and this morning in new orleans who tell me they hope the curve is flattening but they still cant tell, george, because they are so busy. Theyre also telling me theyre still preserving all their ppe. A nurse here at this hospital telling me she wears her n95 mask every day but she also wears this cloth mask over it to preserve it. They are taking no chances and planning for the long haul. This morning, hospitals across new york trying to hold on. The rate of cases may be stabilizing, but the pressure still rising. Some of them need ventilation. We had to put 14 patients on ventilators in a 12hour period. Reporter dr. John marshall guiding abc news through the e. R. Of brooklyns maimonides hospital. We see doctors and nurses, ppes shielding everything but the intensity in their eyes monitoring vital signs, fighting to keep patients alive. With more than 130,000 cases in the state, Governor Andrew Cuomo announcing hospital admissions are now down and the daily fatality rate hitting what appears to be a plateau over the last few days. So you have confidence in the signs out of new york and new jersey. Theres some concern maybe hospitals have lowered their standards for hospitalization or changed their standards for hospitalization so maybe theyre not putting in people who before they would have hospitalized. Well, initially we were looking at an array of projections based on different peoples best guesses. We now have data. The data, the facts tell us china and south korea are starting to reopen, that italy and spain are definitely on the downslopes of that curve, that washington and california have flattened their curves because they were aggressively mitigating from the start. The most important thing for the American People is to really focus on 30 days to slow the spread guidelines because we have proof that they work. Weve seen them work but need you all to cooperate. We need you to continue doing your part and most people actually are. Over 90 of the country is actually doing the right thing right now. Reporter all right, an update on the Naval Hospital ship comfort, they will start seeing covid19 patients but overnight a staffer on board testing positive for the coronavirus. Okay, tom, thanks very much. Michael . Thank you, george. The latest on british Prime MinisterBoris Johnson moved to intensive care after his symptoms got worse. Lets go back to ian pannell in london. Good morning again, ian. Reporter good morning, michael. Thats right, deeply worrying times for britain. Boris johnson was admitted to st. Thomas hospital 24 hours ago. At that point he was tweeting he was there for routine tests but his condition deteriorated and he was admitted into intensive care and we now understand in a statement thats come out in the last few minutes from downing street that hes stable and in good spirits. He has received oxygen but that is just to assist his breathing in part but otherwise hes been breathing well on his own. He hasnt needed a ventilator and seems his condition has not deteriorated. Of course, that will be a huge relief to many britains and World Leaders who offered their support including President Trump but above all his pregnant fiancee Carrie Symonds who is heavily pregnant with his child and unable to visit him at the hospital and, of course, deeply concerning times for anyone. That would seem to be positive news. Michael . All right, thank you so much, ian. Positive news is good news. Coming up new concerns for new and expecting mothers. You know, we have to go to our gma cover st Small Businesses coming through in a big way. When retailers like amazon dont have what we want or shipping is massively delayed, ordering from a Small Business could be the answer and Rebecca Jarvis has that. Good morning, rebecca. Reporter good morning, michael. Yeah, we often hear about the importance of shopping at Small Business, but at this time its not just a matter of helping your community out, shopping at smaller Retailers Online might actually be the only way to get what you want quickly. This morning, what used to take than two weeks. With giant retailers like amazon now prioritizing delivery for essential items like medical supplies, Hand Sanitizer and baby formulas, users across social media longing for the convenience of our precoronavirus days. Theyre nonmedical grade but a lot of people, a lot of the sellers on that platform are making their own. And one more pro tip. If youre looking for necessities, for example, like toilet paper or medicine, the Office Supply stores, michael, are some of the places that still have them in stock in addition to your local pharmacy. Michael . Would not have thought about that. Thank you as always for the great advice. Amy . The u. S. Chamber of commerce is now saying 54 of all Small Businesses report they are closed or could close within the coming weeks and thats why we are focusing on Small Businesses including deborah lippmanns nail polish and treatment which saw a huge turnaround after our segment aired yesterday. Take a look. As a manicurist who is out of work during the crisis and lost business and retailers have been forced to close, i want to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for your purchase of my nail products. Your support saves jobs in our Small Business. Were very happy for you, deborah. Tory johnson is the woman who made it all happen and i know this morning you have a Small Business that is also hurting, but showing some heart. Reporter so much heart. Molly and you is a team of eight women. They watch sales stopped of their Award Winning bread mixes, dips, mug cakes you can put in the microwave but they spotted an urgent need in their own community. A town of 1,800 people in sax city, iowa and saw with school out and staples like bread missing from store shelves, they didnt want families to go hungry, especially in the atneed school districts. So jumped in and started to donate hundreds of their bread mixes and they were able to give a bonding activity to families to be able to bake something in the kitchen. They really believe in the power of baking and just gathering in the kitchen to warm hearts, lift spirits, and so today you can treat yourself. Every single thing from molly and you on our website is 50 off. I tell you personally im in a house of five people. Everyone is healthy fortunately but there is a lot of cabin fever here and so we baked some molly and you mixes. And ill tell you that with turned those frowns in our house upside down because the smell of this, our house now because of molly smells like fresh bread, smells like a bakery. My 13yearold baking up a storm will want to purchase that. Thank you so much, tory. We have partnered with molly and you on this deal. You can get it on our website, goodmorningamerica. Com. Robin . Wonderful, amy. Absolutely wonderful. We want to turn now to how new mothers and pregnant women are dealing with the concerns of covid19 adding to the existing worries of having a newborn. Our own janai norman, an expectant mother, beautiful expectant mother herself, joins us with a new book on postpartum depression and how it can help ease the stress. How are you doing this morning, jan janai . Reporter oh, robin, i am doing really well, excited, getting ready, but, of course, there are worries expected for parents who are welcoming a new baby. That is to be expected but it can cross a line especially with the stress that all of us are under right now. So this book seeks to identify what the author says can often be overlooked and thats postpartum anxiety. Oh, youre holding your baby sister. Reporter tova gave birth two weeks ago in new york city just as the Coronavirus Crisis was ramping up. On top of normal new parent worries shes also deali once home she had to quarantine her son from the new baby, just in case his fever was due to the coronavirus. Turned out he was fine. Its been petrifying for the last two weeks at various points for Different Reasons and its kind of like a rolling state of terror. Reporter her concerns are understandable but for some women that worrying can completely take over and never let up. Its called postpartum anxiety. Sara, author of ordinary insanity knows exactly what that feels like. I went through basically about two years of really horrible anxiety and i didnt really know what to call it at that time. Reporter while some worry is totally normal with a newborn especially during the current pandemic worries that are irrational and incessant are signs of postpartum anxiety. If youre really feeling like youre sweating and heart rate is going up and having physical responses to the anxiety, thats a sign that its probably getting pretty intense. Reporter while depression after birth may be easier to spot, a mother unresponsive or unhappy, sarah says postpartum anxiety is often overlooked as it doesnt exist as a diagnosis on its own. There are a lot of ways in which anxiety makes sense when youre a new mother but its very easy to wander a little too far over the line and have it become this allconsuming obsession in womens lives. Reporter even through the Coronavirus Crisis, her advice for anxious new moms remains the same, connect with others. Saying this is what im going through and having another mother saying, yes, i feel the same thing and finding affirmation and some solidarity in that. Reporter thats the number one thing she said has helped and healed the women shes spoken with. Even in this time of social distancing that social connection is so important so reaching out, talking to others and knowing that youre not alone and, robin, that book is ordinary insanity and its out today. Beautiful. Im reaching out to you right now. Atthme of twofremeer when you vu h,ra . Its us in the studio. I keep it here in the home studio. Such a special moment. Two cups of flour. Ill put it all in this bowl and then a teaspoon of kosher salt and a teaspoon of baking soda. Invites you into his home for a live performance. Thursday, join gma kicking off a day of hope with Live Performances and even a super you got to yummy yum back now on Good Morning America. While were all staying at home people seem to be going bananas for banana bread. Youre looks at loaves of banana bread made by our beloved gma staff. This morning, we have a special guest. The New York Times bestselling author samin nosrat is sharing her goto recipe and joins us from oakland, california. Hi. Thank you so much for being here so early, samin. Want to start by asking you, i know personally for me what it is but what do you think about this global love for banana bread. I think it reminds us of our childhoods. It certainly was the first thing my brothers and i ever baked so i think comfort is a big part of it. I also think its kind of awesome because it uses up stuff thats going to go bad and you really cant mess it up. I know. And i am a little bit challenged in the kitchen although its been getting so much better. Myself like the rest of the country starting to get a little confidence as we stay at home and try new things. Banana bread is so foolproof. I love your recipe. If youre at home, listen up. This is the use what youve got banana bread. Samin, so generous with your offerings and you say you can really let it rip. I know youre supposed to start with ripe bananas this. Is all i have so probably should wait a day or two, right . Yes. I would say you even want some brown spots on the outside because that brownness on the outside usually doesnt show up really too much on the inside and its so much sweeter. So the riper, the better, i am definitely rushed it and ive been sorry. Take us through it, if you will. Of course. This is super simple. Theres essentially two parts. There is the dry parts which i have a cup and a half here of all purpose flour. You could substitute whole wheat pastry flour up to a cup if you like. I like that because it tastes grainy and good and all the regular stuff, cinnamon, baking soda, baking powder and salt. That all gets whisked together and set aside and then comes the fun stuff. This is where the kids get to help. I already mashed five small bananas. You need a cup and a half of bananas. This is where you get your aggression out. Two eggs in there. Im going to use buttermilk. If you dont have it, you could use whole milk, yogurt, greek yogurt, any sort of plain yogurt. Even sour cream would work, any sour dairy. A little vanilla extract. If you dont have that leave that out. Half cup of brown sugar. Im using dark brown. If you dont have that, you can use light brown. You could use granulated sugar. Honey, any sweetener you have and then threequarters cup of canola oil and if you dont have canola oil you can use a light flavored olive oil, coconut oil or butter. So that part all gets mixed up. Now the fun part. You mix the wet stuff into the dry stuff. So gloopy. Hey, samin, its amy. We lost lara so i will pick up. I see you mix it all up. Okay. How long do you bake it for . Mine got a little dry the other day so i think i overbaked it. You possibly did but a really forgiving thing about any banana bread that has dairy in it will be forgiving. This goes for about an hour. If you dont have a loaf pan i didnt mix it though. You want to make sure all the dry stuff is gone and then if you dont have a loaf pan, you can use an 8x8 pan. This one as a little secret special thing on top. Ill cut a banana and put it on top. It seconds in and get little bites of fresh banana and then i made this special topping with brown sugar, cinnamon and flaky salt, ill sprinkle all on top. Kind of like a crumb topping and goes in the oven for an hour. And then what comes out delicious. Yum. Can you you guys see how yummy this looks . Aristandg. She got ushrgh a lot of e too. Ill he go home lots of love, you guys. I am so jealous. I want a piece. I want to send you some. All right, lara, thank you. Thanks, samin. Thanks, samin.
