Neighboring Mendocino County reports at least four confirmed cases. Lake county still unchanged. No one testing positive there so far. And we are plotting the case numbers on to a graph so we really can see the trend here. This trend includes data for 14 counties, the bay area and surrounding areas. As you can see, we are still on an upward curve. And this is our first day with a new extended shelter in place order. It took effect for much of the bay area at midnight and includes new restrictions like the closure of Tennis Courts. There was no one to be seen at these courts in berkeley. Droneview7 gives awes glimpse there. Many courts around town have been closed by the city following the new restrictions. But its more than just Tennis Courts that are now off limits. New at 6 00, abc7 News Reporter Lauren Martinez is live in berkeley to explain. Lauren . Liz, the playground behind me is completely taped up to stop o t equi a lot of these new rules now in place are to prevent you from touching several surfaces and successfully social distance yourself from others. Its a beautiful spring day, but with rules. At the dog park in berkeley, instead of dogs barking, you can hear other sounds. The playgrounds at grove park are taped up, prohibiting children from playing. Dog park, playgrounds, picnic areas, Tennis Courts and basketball courts are just some of the places now closed to the public under the new and stricter bay area shelter in place orders. It was very important for me to work out. It helps my mind, spiritually, physically. You know, this is going to be tough on me as a basketball player. When it comes to a sport tha you can only play with members of your household. Not be in contact with people you know and people that you play with and all that type of thing is really tough on your mindset. Instead of dog parks, pet owners brought their Furry Friends out for a walk or to play. Daniel said he took 1yearold salty to the dog park every day. Weve been going, but also kind of knowing that we are way too close to people at the dog park. So i think its good to just be forced to not go. Heather williamson feels that parks help clear the mind. You know, little piece, little releases and go back in the container. She is not letting these new rules burst her bubble. Well, its the smartest thing to do is to close down, shut down. Distancing is the only thing thats going to stop covid. Now these rules also apply to pools, spas, and climbing walls. I do want the note that there is a baseball field behind me where a group just did a zumba class, but they appeared six feet apart. Reporting live in berkeley, Lauren Martinez, abc7 news. Thank you. With the updated shelterinplace order, essential businesses like Grocery Stores and takeout restaurants are being told to implement social distancing protocols while staying open. Abc7 News Reporter chris nguyen is live in the south bay with that story tonight. Chris . Hi, dan. The new shelterinplace order clearly defines what businesses have to do in order to remain open, with social distancing now mandatory. As the bay area shelters in place, essential businesses have basically become Community Gather points, a place for people to connect and converse. How theyre doing at home, how were doing here. And thats sometimes the only contact that some people have in an entire week. Much of the conversation is now about the new social distancing practices that businesses must display to stay open, including signs at each Public Entrance reminding people to stay away if theyre sick, and to maintain at least a other once inside. Hand sanitizer must also be provided to customers. At this market the protocol also includes the installation of safety guards to protect employees. We saw an immediate need. David payne designed the prototype only a week ago. As entrepreneurs and innovators, we just want to jump in and do what we can as quickly as we can and make things happen. Social distancing measures are already in effect at one of mountain views most popular restaurants. Businesses like la fiesta must limit the number of customers that can be inside at any given time. Theyre patient with us. I remember the first week we had to do only takeout. Things got a little backed up. But now theyve got it down to a science. Managers here quickly adapting to the changes. As far as sales, were not doing as we usually do. But ill take whatever i can get. And im very grateful for all my customers that are supporting us. Reporter back at zanottos, customers expressed their appreciation for those working on the front lines. Something may change for us, just our views of working at home and how we greet each other. I think we may see some social norms change when we get on the other side of all this. Employees now taking it all day by day, hoping to stay safe. Its very reassuring to me that were doing what we need to do to make sure that everyone stays safe that comes into our store. Businesses now have until the end of the week to come up with that social distancing protocol, if they havent done so already. Were live in the south bay tonight, im chris nguyen, abc7 news. Okay, chris, thank you. On midday live today, we asked you how much youve changed how you grocery shop. The most common response was everything. Combined, more than 40 voted for somewhat or a lot. 4 say they havent changed a thing. And a lot of people want to know about masks. Should you wear one . Can it help . Its something the states Public Health director addressed today. Take a listen. So there is some evidence that using face covers may reduce the asymptomatic infections, and also, it might signal to others that you need to keep a little bit of distance. It does also work through, quite simply, decreasing the amount of infectious particles that go into the air when we cough or we sneeze or we talk. Particularly when we speak closely to other people. But again, it doesnt replace the need for physical distancing. She didnt answer all of our questions, though. Abc7 News Reporter kate larsen is on the story. While the cdc considers shifting official guidelines on wearing masks, ordinary citizens are already taking matters into their own hands. By making their own face covers, with n 95 and surgical masks sold out and back ordered until at least may, social media feeds are becoming virtual sewing circles. The homemade masks are making their way to the front line fight against coronavirus. We are making a first distribution to Highland Hospital this week. They requested 600 masks from us. Were also partnering with kaiser. The executive director of my new red shoes, a nonprofit based in redwood city. Normally they distribute shoes to homeless and low income children. But in the midst of a pandemic, their volunteers are now sewing thousands of masks. Within a couple of days of when we launched our effort, we had hundreds of volunteers signed up across the bay area unfortunately, San Francisco, as with the rest of the region, as with the rest of the country has a severe, severe shortage of masks. Today dr. Colfax, San Franciscos director of Public Health said he issued recommendations for all Department Employees and First Responders to wear masks. Beginning this week they started a universal surgical mask policy. All visitors and faculty and staff must complete a training and then obtain a surgical mask. Were asking everyone to keep that mask that you receive as long as possible. As for the general public, local officials are still waiting on recommendations from the cdc. But people want protection while they wait, and not everyone knows how to sew. I found these do it yourself instructions for a mask online. It takes just a few minutes to fold a bandanna with two hair elastics to create a mask. Make sure when you do wear it you maintain your six feet of social distancing. Kate larsen, abc7 news. That is a good idea. And on abc7 news at 4 00, i interviewed dr. Alok patel. He is a member of our team of experts. Here is his response when asked whether homemade masks like that are better than nothing. Those are better than nothing, because remember, one of the mechanisms that this virus is going to travel is by respiratory droplets. Meaning youre going to cough up small respiratory blops. Little particle the virus can travel in. And its thought that a cloth mask could actually trap this. Here is the big thing. A mask at home is going to have two major factors. Filtration, meaning the material that you use, can it actually block things . And the fit. You have to be able to wear this mask all day long. And i stress that because what we want people to not do is theyre wearing a mask and constantly finlting with it or touching it and moving it around. You have telecommunication sure youre absolutely still, wash your hands, and those masks have to be cleaned. Because a dirty mask could be more dangerous than not wearing a mask at all. We know you a lot of questions about face masks. Youve been asking us for answers, so we have those online on our website, abc7news. Com. Youll find information about masks as well as the latest headlines about the pandemic. Meantime, the sound of 3d printers is growing across Silicon Valley as volunteers step up to produce badly needed face shields for hospital workers. Abc7 News Reporter david louie shows you how thousands of them are being produced after a call for help. Hospitals say theyre using up 15 sets of protective devices as each patient arrives with a suspected case of covid19. Valley Medical Center says it has received 1. 2 million donated items, but the one thing they need most are face shields to protect doctors, nurses and other staff as the sick cough or sneeze. That need has mobilized a small army of volunteers who own or have access to 3d printers. Maker nexus in sunnyvale has become face shield central. Currently we have about 300 people signed up that are volunteering to print for us. At first they use a design created in the czech republic, but that was designed and improved in collaboration with valley Medical Center. They were able to make some adjustments to it based on the feedback from our medical and our nursing and Infection Control staff. And on monday, they delivered the first 500 units. 3d printers here and across Silicon Valley are running around the clock to make the components. Everyone is donating time and absorbing the cost of steefrls, estimated to run 3 to 5 per shield. As they get up to speed, production is between 5,000 and one thousand a day. Area hospitals have asked for 13,000. Engineer bill huang says it it takes six hours to print two. Now it takes only four hours. Design improvements include a closed top to prevent droplets from getting into the eyes, and parts that come apart easily to allow frequent cleaning and sterilization. Ive looked at their product. Its excellent. Its an example of a Community Stepping up, giving of their time and resources and helping to protect front line workers risking their lives to p treat the sick. The plastic used for the face shields is in short supply, and that is causing prices to go up. David louie, abc7 news. Even the Police Press Conference today was held at longer than social distancing standards. They did it via videoconference. It will be available to help caring for those sick with the virus and those who just need a bed. Our camera and abc7 News Reporter kris reyes were allowed inside. We set this up yesterday. We have about 30 personnel. Thinking type of setup becoming too familiar. Public and event spaces once reserved for gatherings and celebrations now makeshift hospitals. This is the fourth setup by the National Guard in california just this week. All of our airmen have made all of these beds to be prepared for when theyre needed. In a survey from the citys chamber of commerce, almost half of the businesses that responded say they have made staffing cuts. Another quarter plan to cut staff in the next few weeks. More than 40 of businesses say they have had to close and have lost all of their sales. Overall, the city of San Francisco faces a potential 1. 1 to 1. 7 billion budget deficit over the next two fiscal years. Today the mayor addressed what an impact that makes. That is going to mean really a hard blow to San Francisco, a hard blow to our services. So as we are also spending money and dealing with this pandemic here locally in order to keep people safe, we also have to be mindful about what will happen if we are not financially responsible now. The mayor says she hopes the city can get financial help from the state and the federal ri tonirus pandemic, companies are pivoting to make whats needed now, mainly medical supplies. Virgin orbit, which is part of Sir Richard Bransons Virgin Group is now making ventilators. John gregory from our sister station in los angeles shows you what theyre doing. They can blast a person to the edge of space, and now those same engineers at virgin orbit are putting their skills to work to save people here on earth. We just knew we had to do something to help. So we reached out first to governor newsoms office and were connected to a bunch of academic reachers at uc irvin and ut austin who identified for us the need for someone to go out and build in really large numbers a set of very simple ventilator units. Ventilators have turned out to be critical in this pandemic, pumping air into infected lungs, and giving patients a chance to recover. Just about every hospital in the country could use more than they have. Within a couple of days we had a working prototype that was in testing. A few days later we had a Second Generation prototype that we were testing as well. Weve now started the process of our fda approval, and were really beginning to ramp up our production. Hospitals arent just having a hard time finding ventilators, theyre also having trouble paying for them, Something Else virgin orbit is hoping to address by making their devices as simple and inexpensive as possible. Were doing this because its what our neighbors need. Its what our families need. Its what our hospitals need. And we want to make them as quickly and cheaply as we possibly can. Even though theyre working hard under difficult conditions, the company says morale is high. But ive never experienced quite like this. You know, its theres nothing more motive thang knowing if i spend another hour at work today, i could literally save lives. But like everybody else, the team at virgin orbit is looking forward to the day when this crisis is over and they can get back to the business of blasting people into space. John gregory, abc7 news. Amazing. Well, april 1 is not just april fools day, its census day. Despite coronavirus, the counting of every person in america continues. Some day, some day farewell to hamilton from hamilt coronavirus is a pandemic, meaning it is having a global impact. Today the number of cases worldwide passed 900,000. Spains diagnosed cases topped 100,000 today. Its death toll is now the second highest in the world after italys. France is the fourth country to record more than 4,000 covid19 deaths. And loy aye long with the u. S. , italy and spain, have now passed chinas total reported death toll. Germany has extended its lockdown that was set to expire on friday until after easter. In england, wimbledon is now canceled for the First Time Since world war ii. Here in the United States today, april 1 is census day. Its the official start of the census. But 38 of californians, maybe you, have already submitted their census data either online or by phone. I did it the other day. Well, now Community Leaders are urging the rest of us to do it as soon as possible. So census workers dont have to come to our houses to count us. This is the first time the census has been available online. Most california residents have already received a letter with instructions and a census id code to get started. All that information you enter is based on where you live on april 1st, even if you fill out the form earlier or later than that day. You can also phone in your answers in 12 different languages. And if you dent take any of those options, later this month you will get a paper census form in the mail. Its nine questions per person. So it shouldnt take that long at all. State and local Officials Say its critical that everyone be counted to determine how many representatives we get in congress, and how much federal tax money comes to california, including resources to deal with the impact of covid19. When we are counted, we count. So when you think about the 2 trillion stimulus package that is being provided to the entire country, our state and possibly our city could have a tremendous percentage of that pact based on the number of people that are counted in previous censuses. If you dont respond in the next few weeks, the census will follow up in person at your home. Someone will ring your doorbell. But its not certain when that might half. Because of our health crisis, right now they are delaying that for the safety, and we agree. So we can do our part by answering online or over the phone to make sure that nobody comes to our door. Nonprofits around the state are scrambling to figure out how to reach historically undercounted communities, and want to be sure that everyone knows by law, all your census information is confidential, and you will not be asked about your citizenship or immigration status. Now even if you cant find the Instruction Letter you got from the census, you can still go online to my2020census. Gov and the system will prompt you to enter your information. A key part of slowing the coronavirus pandemic is social distancing, keeping ourselves physically farther way from one another, and staying home as much as we possibly can. But this is obviously isolating and can make you feel lonely. Abc7 News Reporter stephanie sierra discovered some san mateo neighbors finding connection through song and dance. Put your left hand in.
