Heres a map showing the states with the highest death tolls. More than 800 people died in the last 24 hours, new york is stuffering the most but you can see new jersey, michigan, louisiana and Washington State have also been hit hard followed by california and georgia. Experts say the peak of this crisis could be more than two weeks away. The white house is warning americans to brace for more than 200,000 deaths. Hospitals are desperately trying to prepare. The mayor of los angeles is once again stressing the need for more ventilators. But there is some good news. Doctors say social distancing is working even though some areas have been slow to accept it. I want every american to be prepared for the hard days that lie ahead. Reporter a grim warning from President Trump. Were going to start seeing some real light at the end of the tunnel, but this is going to be a very painful, very, very painful two weeks. Reporter white House Doctors now saying up to 240,000 deaths in the u. S. Are possible even if americans follow social distancing guidelines. They put in strong mitigation methods and testing, and you can see what the result in Washington State and california is. Reporter early efforts to stop gatherings in washington and california have slowed the spread, but doctor Anthony Fauci says an outbreak could restart if crowds begin to gather too soon. Now is the time whenever youre having an effect not to take your foot off the accelerator and on the brake but to just press it down on the accelerator. Reporter but some are still not listening as the mayor of los angeles was urging people to keep their distance, crowds were shown on live tv playing basketball and soccer. Pastor tony spell faces six violations, one for each of his sunday services. Were here today because of violations of the governors emergency order. Reporter theres growing frustration about the lack of testing but the White House Task force has now revealed a large amount of tests are available for use right now. Right now theres over 500,000 tests sitting, capacity, that have not been utilized. Reporter dr. Deborah birx says doctors and hospitals need to communicate with their states and use the labs available. Like being on ebay with 50 other states bidding on a ventilator. Reporter meanwhile, new yorks governor says the race to buy adrenalines is driving up prices and costing time. You see the bid go up because california bid, illinois bid, florida bid, new york bids, california rebids. They shouldnt be doing that. If that happens they should be calling us. Reporter the president dismissing the issue even as states with both democratic and republican governors appeal for the federal government to take over the process altogether. And despite the message about social distancing, some states have not imposed restrictions. Florida is limping activity only in the southern part of the state and mississippi issued a shelter in place order for only one county. Next to the troops on the front lines. Here in new york 20 of all emt workers are out sick. With the citys death toll now topping 1,000, some much needed backup has arrived. This the overwhelming crush of coronavirus patients in new york city. 50 ambulances. Youre going to start to see a lot of ambulances on the street that dont look like what you normally see. Reporter 250 ambulances along with 500 emt workers have now arrived in queens from across the country. Personally seeing some from as far west as minnesota and as far south as atlanta, georgia. Reporter new york city ambulances are now responding to 6,000 calls per day. Thats 50 more than usual. And thats with 20 of emts out sick. The ones that can work are working nearly nonstop. John rugen hasnt seen his son in a week. Last night he asked me, when are you going when are you going to come get me, and i told him when everybody stops getting sick or when they stop going to heaven. Reporter for the nypd nearly 6,000 members are out sick. Thats 15 of the force. I cannot as i sit here and talk to you this morning think about a more stressful time. Reporter doctors and nurses are also scrambling around the clock posting images on social media, their exhausted faces bruised from their masks. This virus is so contagious. Its Like Fighting a monster with a water gun. Reporter dr. Luce arris and her husband who is also a physician have been working to ease the crush at nearby hospitals. Her husband now hospitalized with the virus. I think that was that was the hardest thing. We were like weve been together for so many years. Im so sorry. Reporter also infected, dr. Colleen smith, the er doctor who gave us rare access last week inside one of the hardest hit hospitals in new york. In ohio where hospital workers now make up 20 of the states infected patients, one nurse is growing more concerned about the lack of protective gear after she says a colleague recently died from the virus. We see wuhan. We see italy. We see the Health Care Workers dressed in head to to toe ppe, masks, bunny suits. Then you look at what united, even in gown on, barely a mask and some goggles. Reporter this morning in louisiana the governor is warning the new orleans area could run out of ventilators by this saturday after the state recorded its biggest spike of confirmed cases in a 24hour period. Doctors in new orleans say their biggest concern is trying to stay ahead of the influx of patients. You feel like theres a hurricane coming, and each day you think, okay, is the hurricane here . Is this it . And you dont know if this is it and its going to be a category 3 or if its coming and its going to turn into a 4 or we dont know. In california the state has launched a website for retired nurses and doctors where they can reactivate their license if they want to help. There are new concerns about a u. S. At least 100 sailors on the uss Theodore Roosevelt have now tested positive for coronavirus and learned overnight that some of the crew will be allowed to get off the ship in guam. We have new details about a cruise ship stranded at sea. At least four people on board have died and more people are getting sick. There are people even more ill. Reporter at least 200 passengers on this Holland America ship are now showing flulike symptoms up from 179 a few days ago. At least nine of those sick passengers have tested positive for the virus. Four others have died, but the ship cannot enter american waters without permission, and its been turned away from all other ports sparking a fierce battle about whether it should be allowed to dock in florida. Just to drop people off at the place where, you know, were having the highest number of cases right now just doesnt make a whole lot of sense. What are we going to do . Let the ship go back out to sea and let it just float around and let people die . Reporter the ship could arrive in florida as early as tomorrow, and the cruise line is promising to transport all the passengers once they disembark but floridas governor says patients should be treated out at sea so nobody on land is put at risk. The coast guard requires unanimous approval for the ship to leave international waters, but the vote in broward county, florida, was postponed overnight and officials have not yet said when they plan to meet again. And all essential businesses must come up with guidelines to keep customers spread out in stores to maintain that social distance. They have to figure that out by friday.
