We are back with breaking news from idaho. A magnitude 6. 5 earthquake just hit hours ago north of boise. There have already been several moderate aftershocks, no immediate reports of damage or injuries. It was the strongest quake to hit idaho since 1983. New york city is bringing in hundreds of out of town ambulances and paramedics to help with the coronavirus crisis. Abcs eva pilgrim is on the frontlines where First Responders are risking their lives every day as they struggle to cope with the dramatic spike in 911 calls. Reporter in queens, the epicenter of the new york city outbreak, ems workers are the infantry, and they are overwhelmed. The number of calls to new yorks 911 system skyrocketing. Every call is treated as a potential coronavirus patient. We followed them at a safe distance on several calls. This woman says her aunt is covid19 positive and has pneumonia. This is her second trip to the hospital. With 20 of the ems force out sick, the ones that can work are working nearly nonstop. Sometimes with only limited protective gear. Many afraid of infecting their families at home. Dozens and dozens of members who are sleeping in their cars because they dont want to bring it to their families. Reporter john ruggen hasnt seen his son in a week. Last night he asked me, he said, when are you going to come when are you going to come get me . And i told him, when everybody stops becoming sick or stop going to heaven. Reporter right now every call is a risk. A risk travis and his fellow Emergency Responders are willing to take to help those in need. Are you worried . Yeah. I know were going to come down with this. At this point its not a question of if we are going to get it, but how bad were going to get it. Reporter these First Responders tell us that they know they have been in contact with covid19 positive patients. They dont know if they have it, and they also dont know if they will be tested. Eva pilgrim, abc news, new york. Thanks to my friend there eva. Just some incredible reporting. Coming up, new concerns about the Prescription Drug shortages across the board. Ed b . This hospital waiting room in parma served as an overflow ward for coronavirus patients. Now it is empty. Thousands are still being treated throughout the country. Back at home were hearing alarming new reports about just how long the covid19 virus can exist in the air. I spoke earlier with dr. Patel. That new study from the cdc about how this virus can be transmitted saying its not airborne, but theres a lot of talk about droplets. Break this down for us. So what some of the studies are showing is that its possible that the sarscov2 virus can exist in the air in an enclosed space. We have to stress these tests were done in a lab setting, which doesnt always translate to the real world. Doing something in a lab is different than if you were on a subway or in a hospital or wherever. But it is a huge sign that we need to be extravigilant about this virus when it comes to airborne spread. Essentially doing what were already doing, making sure those on the frontlines have an n95. We have something called negative pressure hospital rooms. Were learning more and more about how insanely dangerous and easy to spread this virus is. We have a couple things happening here. When we talk about airborne spread, and you do it in a lab setting, in a lab setting you cant necessarily replicate what humans are going to do. So we know the virus is going to replicate in the upper and lower airways. So when youre coughing or sneezing, youre shooting out a virus. But theyre going to go amidst blobs of mucous and respiratory droplets. Those are only going to be able to go so far. Take the projectile of that, say three to six feet, thats where that magic number comes from in social distancing. What some of the concern is that a smaller droplet might be able to linger in the air for a certain amount of time, so you potentially could expose someone in close proximity even after youve left. Thats what the concern is. That cdc study revealing new information about those who tested positive for coronavirus, but showed no symptoms. Almost 25 of people infected may be asymptomatic . Absolutely. Thats one of the biggest concerns weve had since a previous study that looked at a model from chinese data and showed a very large percentage of spread could be from asymptomatic people. You know, some of the other people have referenced previous studies that showed that people with the flu, about 1 in 4, actually sought medical care. So in this situation, absolutely, a lot of the people who were testing positive may have been tested for another reason because of certain exposures. Were starting to see a complete range of symptoms. We see people who are tested who are at high risk and hospitalized, they have symptoms. Were seeing other people being tested because they work with someone who is positive, or because they traveled to a high risk area. Theyre quarantined at home, they feel fine, they have no symptoms. Its a scary potential to know there could be a lot more people out there who are contagious and spreading the virus who have absolutely no symptoms and dont know theyre sick. Were hearing reports of shortages on common Prescription Drugs at pharmacies, generic and antibiotics, Blood Pressure meds. What are you hearing . Im hearing the same thing. Both officially and off the record. So weve already heard a week ago reports of shortages of hydroxychloroquine and chloroquine, two of the medications referenced by the white house as being potential game changers. Hydroxychloroquine is in a clinical trial. Ive heard of patients who normally take this medication because they have an autoimmune disease, and they cant fill their prescription because the pharmacies are out. Does this mean other people are getting prescriptions written for them or doctors are writing it to protect themselves . That question is not known. We know theres a shortage there. Dr. Patel was fired up about the fact that some hospitals are starting to say, hey, doctors and nurses who weve seen being whistleblowers, saying whats happening in the hospitals, the fact that they dont have gear, enough protective gear, enough equipment, theyre starting to say, we will fire you, threaten your jobs, if you speak out like that. Dr. Patel says that does not help the situation that these medical professionals i dont think in this situation that we even have the option to do Something Like that, when you have Governor Cuomo saying, we need more medical professionals coming in from other states, those threats dont suffice. Right, can you spare these doctors in this dire situation. Doctors in this dire situation. From anyone else. So why accept it from your allergy pills . Flonase relieves your worst symptoms which most pills dont. Get allinone allergy relief for 24 hours, with flonase. But right now, the world needs all the good that we can do. This 112yearold man over in the uk. Slow clap for him, right . This is bob waton here in the uk, and he says that he is happy to be 112. But when it comes to this whole coronavirus thing . Its, quote, bizarre. And that hes never experienced anything like it before. Now take that think about that. He been around for a century plus. He survived two world wars. Great depression. I mean, the list goes i mean, im sure theres been other plagues. He goes, coronavirus . Nothing like it. I know. One thing that i thought was a little beacon of hope was he said, hes a bit frustrated, but again, he goes, ive been in situations before where you just kind of have to accept what is happening. Right. Im sure there was a lot of Uncertain Times that he just waited out. Frustrated because he deserves a giant party. Right. No one can really be around him. Hes got to selfdistance, social distance, whatever. Happy birthday to you, mr. Bob. We love the 112. We hope you do too. Well, speaking of the elderly, theres a retirement home, i forgot where it is, i think kansas, yeah, its in kansas. They wanted to have some fun while still practicing social distancing. So they went ahead and set up a new kind of tictactoe, take a look at this. They used some tape for the dividers. And washable markers. Erasable markers. And there they go. Thats social distancing. Thats pretty fun. A little tictactoe. Youve got to help out the Elderly Population as well. We could do bingo as well, keep it entertained. Also here oh, what is really . I cant stand you. Reporter meanwhile, new yorks governor says the race to buy ventilators is driving up prices and costing time. You see the bid go up because california bid. Illinois bid. Florida bid. New york bids. California rebids. We shouldnt be doing that, if that happens they should be calling us. Reporter the president dismisses the issue even as states appeal for the federal government to take over the process altogether. And despite the message about social distancing, some states have not imposed any restrictions yet. Florida is limiting activity only in the southern part of the state. Mississippi has issued a shelter in place order for only one county in the entire state. Two cruise ships with coronavirus patients on board are seeking permission to dock in florida tomorrow.
