In fact, they were cheering here in new york city. Take a look and a listen. I love this. Applause erupting at 7 00 p. M. Last night for all the First Responders and doctors and nurses. Should do that every night. As you know, new york is the epicenter of this outbreak in the u. S. There are a lot of other hot spots developing as well and were following a lot of new developments. President trump is extending federal guidelines for social distancing until april 30th. And take a look at this graph showing why thats necessary. That was two weeks ago, a little under 4,000 cases. Now more than 140,000 cases in just a couple of weeks. Dr. Anthony fauci is predicting things could get far worse, saying up to 2 million americans could contract the coronavirus and warns that the death toll here could reach 200,000. Cases around the world are skyrocketing as well, now more than 700,000. And robin, just a day before that we reached 600,000. Thats right. And you have a lot to talk about with dr. Fauci. You will in just a moment, george. But first, we continue our coverage there in new york. Tom llamas is in central park where that emergency Field Hospital is being set up. Good morning, tom. Reporter robin, good morning to you. As you know, central park is an oasis for so many that live here in new york city and now its going to be a place where people are brought hoping not to die. Robin, i got to be honest with you, when we drove in here this morning and you see these white hospital tents, it really hits you. This is central park and this is a Field Hospital. The group samaritans first hope to have it up and running by tomorrow. Theyre going to have 68 hospital beds, and robin, they tell me they will be treating covid19 patients. This morning, america dealing with a new, longer timeline. This after a major reversal from the president , extending social distancing guidelines until the end of april. Nothing would be worse than declaring victory before the victory is won. Therefore, we will be extending our guidelines to april 30th to slow the spread. Reporter the new date several weeks past easter, a deadline he touted several times last week that he now says was aspirational. As the number of confirmed cases of covid19 skyrockets coast to coast, Health Officials estimating there could be millions of cases in the United States, and between 100,000 to 200,000 fatalities. The president s new guidelines come as some governors are discouraging residents from coronavirus hot zones from entering their states. In florida, checkpoints to screen new yorkers driving in, while the Rhode Island National guard began door knocking homes, mandating that all out of state visitors selfquarantine. In texas, travelers from major cities and drivers from neighboring louisiana, now required to quarantine for 14 days. Louisiana did see a oneday slowdown in confirmed cases, but the governor warning they are in a dire situation with the lack of supplies for hospitals. We are playing catchup. Theres no doubt about that. And it moves fast. Reporter in new york, ems reporting record high call volumes, saying the last five days have been their busiest ever, with more than 6,000 911 calls a day. This morning nearly 5,000 members of the nypd are out sick and nearly 900 have tested positive for covid19. 260 firefighters have also tested positive as well. This is unprecedented. Weve never seen our ems system get this many calls ever. Reporter with growing ppe shortages, Health Care Workers like South CarolinaCritical Care nurse Meredith Johnson say they feel unprotected. Governor cuomo says that new rochelle lawyer, the one he called patient zero in that new york city suburb, has left the hospital and is now recovering at home. George . Okay, tom, thanks. Lets bring in a man now whos become familiar to all of us, americas top expert on Infectious Disease, dr. Anthony fauci. Dr. Fauci, thank you for your time this morning and for your Tireless Service over these last several weeks and years. As we heard from the president all last week, he was hoping that we could reopen the country by easter, but of course we saw that extension of the guidelines yesterday. Take us inside that decision. What convinced the president it was necessary . What convinced you . Well, it was clear, george, that the dynamics of the outbreak, what was going on in cities like new york city and westchester and new orleans and others, was clearly still on an uptick. And to pull back the mitigation methods before you reach the peak and turned the corner, i think really would have been imprudent because that would have regenerated the spike to go up. So we had some intensive conversations with him and we convinced him. He listened and we said the better part of valor would be to extend them to the end of april when we think it would peak and start coming down. I mean these are all projections. The thing we was pretty sure of if we prematurely did it, it would likely rebound. You talked about the peak in april. The president seemed to say yesterday that the models estimate the peak death rate in two weeks, so which is it . Is it two weeks from now or the end of april . What he was saying, the number of deaths would probably peak by a certain point, but you still get a number of cases that go up which will ultimately lead to less death rates because the cases anticipate the death rates because what he was saying, that we had such a surge earlier, that within two weeks you were going to have a peak in the death rates. The death rates start coming down but you have another curve which is actually the new infections. So theyre complicated curves that overlap each other. And the death rate numbers are pretty stunning. I mean, 100 to 200,000 lives could be lost. Are you all estimating that even if these guidelines are extended . Yeah. Even if these guidelines are extended, we will lose more people. Exactly how many more we would lose is uncertain, depending upon the efficiency of the mitigation methods. But clearly, what you saw yesterday and the day before, within one day we doubled the number of deaths. I mean, it was just really very, very sobering. It is sobering and of course all of us here in new york are dealing with it. New york has been described as the epicenter of this virus here in the United States right now. What other areas are concerning you right now . Well certainly new orleans, george, is in that area where its worrisome because the spike and the peak and the dynamics of that curve are starting to resemble a bit of new york. Its a smaller city obviously so they cant be totally comparable, but the dynamics of the outbreak in new orleans are worrisome. Were also worried about detroit. Detroit is starting to show some signs that theyre going to take off. L. A. We worry about even though they had an early start, calmed down a little. It looks like that they may have the opportunity and the misfortune of spiking up. There are a number of other smaller cities that are percolating along, a couple hundred cases. The slope doesnt look like its going up, but what weve learned from painful experience with this outbreak, is it goes almost along on a straight line, and then you have a little celebration. Then it goes way, way up. Weve seen that in new york. Our european colleagues have seen it in italy and france and germany and in spain, and its a rather consistent pattern. It looks like its low level. It starts to accelerate and then it really goes up. Thats the thing we really got to be careful of. Were going to have all of these mini outbreaks throughout various cities in our country. Given that spread, the president said he hopes to have the United States well on the way to recovery by june 1st. Would that take extending these guidelines beyond the end of april . I think april might do it, george, but we kept an open mind. When we presented it to the president , we said 30 days is a solid. I think we should do it. 15 days was too little. None of us felt that 15 days was adequate. When he asked the obvious question which is a reasonably good question, do you think theres a possibility that we may be able to go past 30 days, we said we didnt think so but theres always that possibility depending upon the efficiency and the effectiveness of the mitigation methods. Finally, sir, whats your best hope right now for getting treatments on the market as quickly as possible and a possible vaccine . Well, we have a couple of Clinical Trials that are accruing now over 200 patients with one drug called remdesivir. A couple of other drugs are being tested in early stages of development. I would think by early summer, late spring, we will get a signal on one of those drugs to see whether it works or not, and if it does, well widely distribute it. If it doesnt, well just get it off the shelf, get it off the table because it wont be usable. But we have the opportunity to prove one or more of them are actually working and that will be a couple of months. Vaccine, a little bit different, george. Were in a phase one trial. We went into it as quickly as we possibly could, the fastest ever, but still the process at rocket speed takes about a year, a year and a half. So if we cycle with this outbreak and it comes back next fall and winter, we might have the early components of a vaccine ready to counter that outbreak likely next winter. Dr. Fauci, thank you for your time this morning. Good to be with you, george. I hope all of our viewers understand dr. Faucis history. He is the definition of a public servant, serving as head of Infectious Disease since 1984, six president s, and has always been a calm voice of reason and candor and science. And he certainly has through this trying time. This morning there are new concerns about strikes involving instacart, the food Shopping Service so many people are relying on during this lockdown time. Workers are set to protest what they are calling unsafe conditions. A group called the gig workers collective says Instacart Shoppers deserve more protection. They are looking for free protective gear like masks, wipes and sanitizer. Instacart has responded by making its own Hand Sanitizer for employees among other measures, but gig workers collective say it is not enough. Michael . Thank you, amy. And while the ships intend to dock in ft. Lauderdale thats not a done deal. The u. S. Coast guard says that first they need to submit a plan and it needs to be approved before these ships enter u. S. Waters. George . What a nightmare on that ship. Gio, thanks very much. We turn to the growing debate over whether all of us should be Wearing Masks. Since this crisis has began u. S. Health officials have said Healthy People should not wear masks unless theyre caring for someone who is sick. But some experts say Wearing Masks may be a beneficial way to stop the spread. Steve osunsami is outside the cdc in atlanta with more. Good morning, steve. Reporter good morning, george. Theres disagreement about whether wearing an ordinary, average face mask protects the average person from the coronavirus. This is an n95, the mask thats in high demand and short supply because Health Professionals need this to protect themselves while treating patients. Here at the cdc they argue that having the average person wear an ordinary mask can be counter productive because youre putting the mask on an off your face and may be spreading disease. There are a number of scientists who disagree. It may be one of the more simple tools used to help stop the spread of communicable diseases, the face mask. In the fight against covid19 both the cdc and the World Health Organization continue to state that only Health Care Workers, care givers, and people suffering symptoms should wear them. But some leading specialists from asia where the disease first struck are saying this morning that face masks may have played a role in helping them contain the coronavirus outbreak, and not hospital grade masks, just masks made of fabric. The head of the china center for disease and prevention told Science Magazine that the big mistake in the u. S. And in europe, in my opinion, is that people arent Wearing Masks. Many people have asymptomatic or presymptomatic infections. If they are wearing face masks it can prevent droplets from carrying the virus, escaping and infecting others. Jeremy howard, a Research Scientist at the university of san francisco, wrote an oped in the Washington Post highlighting data from covid19 Success Stories in Asian Countries such as south korea, hong kong and taiwan where everyone is Wearing Masks. Ive analyzed 38 scientific papers that have looked at the relationship between using masks and the transmission of covid19 and similar kinds of viruses, and they all tell the same story which is that wearing a mask can decrease transmission by up to 50 . Reporter here in the u. S. In late february, the Surgeon General shared this on twitter saying seriously people stop buying masks. They are not effective in helping the general public from catching coronavirus. The governments advice is in stark contrast to what people are practicing in countries such as japan and south korea. Again, these are not n95 masks that Health Workers desperately need. Some Health Experts believe one reason u. S. Officials have discouraged people from buying masks is because the n95s are in short supply. So if you go and buy up n95 respirators, that means theres going to be some doctors and some nurses who will have to make difficult decisions. They may have to reuse their n95 or try something else. Thanks to steve for that. Earlier this morning i asked dr. Fauci to weigh in on this debate. Yeah, i mean, obviously the most important use for a face mask is for a Health Care Worker to protect that person from getting infected. The second most important is to put it on someone whos infected to prevent them from infecting Health Care Workers and those around them. But there is some rationale that the person in the street who may not know theyre infected could actually prevent the spread to other people by Wearing Masks. This hasnt been proven. We know the masks are not 100 effective. People might think and be under the impression that if they wear a mask theyre completely protected, and theyre not. Even when you pull back and think about it, were starting to reexamine the possibility that if there are enough masks should everyone be Wearing Masks, those who are trying to protect themselves and those who are trying to protect others because they might be infected. There was always a feeling that theres not enough masks so you got to prioritize them so the Health Care Workers and to those who are infected. But given the situation that we might have enough masks for everyone, i think theres some rationale that we should utilize them much more than we do at the present time. Im going to bring in dr. Jennifer ashton whos going to join us now from her home. Doc, thank you for joining us. Were hearing all the talk about face masks, so we want to ask the question. What about transmission by air . Theres a choir in washington state, 45 members say they got the virus. They practiced all the guidelines. So does this sut suggest the virus can be picked up in a different way . Not yet, michael. But we have to go back to what we know and dont know. What we know about this virus is that, you know, it most likely spreads via respiratory droplets that are large droplets. That doesnt necessarily mean airborne three to six feet or more. Obviously when youre breathing, singing and not just coughing or sneezing, thats where those droplets can spread. Thats why the social distancing is so important. Again, in science and medicine, we continue to learn more and more every day and this virus isnt even four months old yet. We heard gios latest report about the cruise ship, people stuck on the cruise ship, the coronavirus spreading through the cruise ship. What can they do to protect themselves . Thats why three weeks ago the cdc and the state department recommended temporarily against cruising. The quarters are so close. Its very hard to social distance. That may be an environment, to dr. Faucis point, where everyone on that ship gets a mask, not for their own protection but to prevent spreading it to others. Were going to see how that evolves. All right, doc, thank you for joining us. Im sure youll come back with more later on. Amy . All right, michael. Coming up next here, tiger king is ruling quarantine. Tom llamas is there with much more on that side of the story. Good morning again, tom. Reporter robin, good morning again to you. Things are moving very fast here in central park. The new, longer timeline, this after a major reversal from the president extending social distancing guidelines to the end of april. Nothing would be worse than declaring victory before the victory is won. Therefore, we will be extending our guidelines to april 30th to slow the spread. Reporter as the number of confirmed cases of covid19 skyrockets coast to coast, Health Officials estimating there could be millions of cases in the United States. And the death rate numbers are pretty stunning. I mean, 100,000 to 200,000 lives could be lost. Are you all estimating that even if these guidelines are extended . Yeah, i mean, even if these guidelines are extended, we will lose more people. Exactly how many more we would lose is uncertain, depending upon the efficiency of the mitigation methods. But clearly what you saw yesterday and the day before, that within one day, we doubled the number of deaths. I mean it was just really very, very sobering. Reporter the president s new guidelines come as some governors are discouraging residents from coronavirus hot zones from entering their states. In florida, checkpoints to screen new yorkers driving in, while the Rhode Island National guard began door knocking homes, mandating that all out of state visitors selfquarantine. In texas, travelers from major cities and drivers from neighboring louisiana now required to quarantine for 14 days. Theres no doubt about that, and it moves fast. Reporter in new york, ems reporting record high call volumes, saying the last five days have been their busiest ever, with more than 6,000 911 calls a day. This is unprecedented. Weve never seen our ems system get this many calls ever. Reporter and we want to mention a moment that our team witnessed out here. Were just across the street from mt. Sinai hospital on the Upper East Side of manhattan. A nurse from that hospital walked out, saw this Field Hospital, started taking photos, and then started to cry, george. Its a very, very hard time for the city of new york but people are coming together. George . They sure are. That is such an unimaginable sight up there on the Upper East Side. Tom, thanks very much. Were going to get more now on those protests at amazon and instacart. Strikes expected this morning, employees concerned about unsafe conditions. Rebecca jarvis has all the latest. Good morning, rebecca. Reporter good morning, george. A week ago the instacart ceo said this is the busiest time in the companys history with more and more americans relying on instacart to fulfill those grocery orders. Theyre hiring 300,000 new employees to help deal with the increased demand. But the current instacart employees, those shoppers who collect your groceries for you, say they need additional protection to feel safe at work. They are asking for protective gear including masks, Hand Sanitizer and wipes. They would like 5 hazard pay per delivery, and they want the default tip setting to be set to 10 . Now, instacart has responded as a company saying they will be providing those employees with Hand Sanitizer which the company is now manufacturing with a thirdparty manufacturer. They also are setting the default tip setting to whatever you last tipped. So if you tipped 15 on your last order, thats what the default will be. If you tipped 5 on your last order, that is what the default will be. George, they say at this point the instacart workers say at this point that is not enough. Theyre going on strike today around the country. Everybodys got to up those tips as well. What about amazon . Reporter so amazon workers here in new york and Staten Island at the jfk 8 facility also say they will be walking out today. One of the workers there tested positive for covid19. The facility which employs 4,500 people has remained open. Amazon says that its doing everything in its power going to extreme lengths and detail to make sure that the facility remains clean, but the workers say its not enough. They would like the facility shut down. They are walking out, and they expect pay while the facility is shut down, george. Rebecca jarvis, thanks very much. Michael . Rock and roll hall of Famer Jon Bon Jovi is bringing people together with music during this time of crisis even as the pandemic impacts him personally. The rocker concerned one of his sons may have the virus and one of his band mates has tested positive, david brian, and John Bon Jovi is joining us live now from new jersey. Jon, thank you for joining us this morning. We want to start by asking, how is your son jacob doing and how is your wife dorthea and the rest of the family . We know jacob has not been feeling well. Everybody is happy and healthy. Thank you guys. Everybody is really great. Jakes case was very mild, unconfirmed. He just had a severe stomach virus and a fever, but it broke in a couple of days. Hes 100 . Were all very healthy, thank you. Were very happy to hear that. What about david brian, your band mate, who tested positive for covid19 along with his wife . How are they doing . Ive spoken to david even this morning. He wants everyone to know that hes recovering. Its 15 days into his respiratory confirmation, but he wants everyone to know that hes really on the mend and that his wife hasnt shown any symptoms although she was also confirmed positive, but shes doing great. Jon, big hugs to the whole family from ali and the girls as well. It must have been so great for you to see what was going on in chicago. Unbelievable. You know, music is a great healer, its a great unifier. I was touched to think that the folks of chicago had so much love for the band that they all reached out their windows to sing livin on a prayer. Its a touch stone in american culture. That song is a phenomenon. Its certainly one of my favorites. We hear youre writing a new song now and it started with this photo of you washing dishes at jbj Soul CommunityKitchen Restaurant and you posted on instagram with the caption, if you cant do what you do, do what you can. Youre asking folks for help with lyrics. Tell us about it. Well, there i was at the soul kitchens which we have three of them washing dishes and dorthea took that picture and we posted it the next day. She got asked what should the caption be and i said if you cant do what you do, you do what you can. Then the songwriter in me said, thats a title. So i sat down to write the song and i wrote it. But, as i was writing it, i thought people from different walks of life have different stories to tell so i shared the first verse and the chorus and i asked people to send me their verses and tell me their stories, how theyre affected by this, because were all in this together. We are all writing this song together. So ive been picking verses that i find on the instagram and youtube and facebook and then ill sing them back into the computer and send them out to people. Ive gotten thousands of them. Wow, thats really awesome, man. Were going to let the folks at home hear the songs chorus, so check it out. If you cant do what you do, you do what you can this aint my prayer, its just a thought im wanting to send around here we bend but dont break, down here we all understand if you cant do what you do, you do what you can all right. Sounds like another hit there, jon. Youre finding out theres so many song writers out there joining you. Everybodys got a story to tell, george, you know. Its the nurses and the doctors and the emt workers and the truck drivers, theyre the ones that are writing this song for me and its their lives that were writing about. My heart goes out to each and every one of them because this is that great time in america when we all come together as one and were all in this together. Jon, we cant thank you enough for joining us this morning. We really appreciate you, my friend. Glad the familys doing well and glad jacob is on the mend. We will talk to you soon. I mean, she just proved that working from home is not as easy as many of us make it look. Take a look at some of our producers also that are helping to get the show on the air right now and theyre working from home as well. Tory, fabulous tory who produces deals steals, our overnight booker nick is hard at work at home, and gingers producer sam as well. As you guys know, some of the team, theyre in the office. Theyre being safe. Theyre making the most of the situation. Chris and kim are both wearing costumes. That helps them to keep distance from each other and also from other people getting too close to them by wearing the costumes as you can see right here. That is protective gear indeed. Yes, that is protective and no one wants to go around them so it works out well on both accounts. Fun and effective. All right, i love that. All right, robin, thank you. Small Business Owners and employees have had their world turned upside down with forced closures due to the coronavirus and while some help could be on the way this week with those new federal loan programs, there are other actions Business Owners can take to help their Companies Stay afloat. So to help everyone and get some good advice to help us move forward, were kicking off our weeklong series, ask the sharks with daymond john and mr. Wonderful, kevin oleary. Gentlemen, thank you both for joining us. We know that you both have invested in a lot of Small Businesses. And daymond, how has this been impacting those businesses . Yes, ill go first. My businesses of course and a lot of Small Businesses have to worry about how theyre going to keep their employees and how theyre going to reduce costs, so initially what im doing in my company and Small Businesses are doing, theyre asking their employees what have they not done in the past and where do they see options for revenue. A lot of employees are thinking like entrepreneurs, and some of my best ideas that were starting to implement right now came from people who have been employed in the company, and they always wanted to do this, and now heres their shot. Kevin, what about you . Im telling you, we have to survive. We have to keep ourselves open for the next 60 to 90 days and we have to reach out to our suppliers, our landlords, our employees. The key is to keep the dna of the business intact so that when we come back out of this incredible, unique situation, we have all the Building Blocks we started with to spring right back into business. I did a call, a zoom call just like this last friday with all my companies and we brainstormed together for two hours. The key is to survive, just stay alive and hopefully get some of that bill money, the grant money in the next eight weeks. We have some questions from some Small Business owners. Were going to start with ian who owns a gym. Take a listen. Im the general manager of brick new york, a boutique fitness gym based here in new york city. I wanted to ask your advice on how to avoid slipping into the red as a membershipbased Small Business whose users are currently stepping away. Daymond, what can he do to stay afloat . Thats funny, i met somebody in new york city who has a gym as well. You know what they have been doing . They have been leasing out the equipment to their members who are stuck at home so they keep their membership price, and they have been having their trainers as well broadcasting from the empty gym or from home, and doing peloton type of lessons with their community because the community is already paying, and they want to keep healthy. Now theyre going to have some equipment that youre not using. I think thats one of the first steps that you can do to extend this access to your members while theyre stuck at home. Kevin, whats your take . Go to the landlords. Generally 33 of the cost of running a gym, say i need a deferral for 90 days, you can tack it on the end of my lease. If he says no, tell him to call me and ill post to 4 million social media followers to somebody whos not playing ball. That will get his attention. Guys, our next question comes from tracy who owns a pet spa. Take a look. Is it a good idea for Small Businesses that have had to close down to offer gift card sales for future use to bring income in now or will this cause issues down the road . Kevin, what do you think about businesses offering or selling gift cards right now . Bad idea. People need immediate satisfaction at a time when they dont have any income or theyre worried about their jobs. Most companies that are primarily retail have some kind of list of customers. If youre selling cupcakes for example or any other product that wasnt retail, reach out to their cell numbers, their email numbers and say, look, ill ship it to you, ill send it to you. Gift cards are a tough sell in economic difficult times. People dont think that far ahead. Daymond, whats your take . Yeah, i agree. You cant give somebody a promise if you dont know if youre necessarily going to be around. Now, if you have inventory and you are then giving them an option to get the inventory at 50 because you have 1 million worth of inventory and each customer can buy something at 50 off, thats immediate gratification. You dont really know where the business is going. None of us know where our businesses are going right now so gift cards are a really bad idea. Our next question is from susie in new jersey with a specialized cake business. Take a listen. I own a baking business that makes custom cakes for special events. The coronavirus has completely halted my business. Can you give me tips on how to stay relevant and at the forefront of my customers minds so when this whole thing is over and we go back to normal, people will think of me first when they have their events . First of all, become the rachael ray or somebody where youre teaching this stuff on youtube or channels. How do you collaborate with other people that are already selling products and or goods to these people . You find somebody who is selling decorations and say my cakes are 50 off if you add this to your mailing list. You can acquire new customers. Really give a lot of content where people can become the best baker they ever wanted to be once they get out of this situation and when theyre too busy to bake because they follow you and theyll buy more and more cakes from you. Kevin, your advice . I have a question like that, a famous Shark Tank Company called wicked good cupcakes. Its out of massachusetts. 30 of our sales until 14 days ago were corporate clients. That has gone to zero. What weve done is gone back to individuals who have bought for us for special events like birthdays or weddings or whatever and made them a phenomenal offer. Weve basically told them help each other out. We told them, were part of your family. Help us, and well give you a great deal on cupcakes and thats how he pulled back all of this corporate business that we lost, now with our family of customers we have been working with for five years. People care, thats what were learning about. People care and they want to be part of a solution. Its an amazing time in america, but people care. Kevin, i have to ask you, do you live on the shark tank set . Im wondering that myself. Ive become a zoomologist. You want a different background . Ive got hundreds of pictures. I love this. You should see the pajamas im wearing right now. Well skip that part but we will get to our last question from rachel who owns a restaurant. Take a look. My husband and i own and operate a restaurant here in chicago and were wondering what the stimulus package means most immediately for our employees that we had to lay off temporarily, what it means in addition to unemployment, in place of unemployment. Kevin, why dont you take this one. Heres the issue. If youre looking for that jobs act money, if you want to call it that, or the bill that just got passed, the whole intention of that bill is to keep the profile of your employees intact. Laying off employees may not be a good strategy. In other words, its better to get everybody else to fund your business. Keep your employees being paid for the next eight weeks and then go after that helicopter money the fed is giving you. I dont like the idea of laying off employees. Thats not what were doing. Were making everybody else pay, our suppliers, landlords, everybody else until we can get this bill to work for us. Getting everybody to chip in until things get back on track. Gentlemen, thank you for your time and advice. It is much appreciated. Coming up, the right way to relax those screen time rules with your kids at home. Well be right back. Ive been involved in. Communications in the media for 45 years. Ive been taking prevagen on a regular basis for at least eight years. For me, the greatest benefit over the years has been that prevagen seems to help me recall things and also think more clearly. And i enthusiastically recommend prevagen. It has helped me an awful lot. Prevagen. Healthier brain. Better life. Nissan has been with you through thick and thin. And now is no different. Were offering Payment Options for current owners and our Service Departments are here to help. And for future owners, were offering no payments for 90 days on 14 models. This is help when you need it. We are back now with the question so many parents are asking right now. You know, after waging the screen time battle with their kids, is it okay now to relax those rules . Becky worley talked to the experts about that. Good morning, becky. Reporter good morning, robin. Youre right. Were all asking that question, and Broadband Networks are seeing massive traffic surges, wifi calls doubling. At t Network Data Traffic up 27 . Now, its possible thats all coming from my kids watching youtube, but maybe its a sign all of us parents are leaning a little too heavily on the screens. Tara from new jersey is a mom of two boys ages 8 and 2. Weve been in quarantine for ten days. It feels like a month. Reporter when shes helping big brother charlie with class work no, no, charlie needs those markers for school. Reporter ben, well bud, no. Thats charlies toothbrush. Reporter so the tv goes on. And just like that, were calm, but im also afraid that im just melting his brain and i genuinely dont know how to make this work. Reporter in many homes including mine, its been kind of a free for all. Im trying to manage what theyre doing on their screens but im not going to lie, these last few days their time usage has gone nuts. Former stanford dean and author says thats okay temporarily. Yes, we can relax screen time. Screen time is not the danger right now. Reporter she and the American Academy of pediatrics say it needs parental awareness. Keeping an eye on what your kids are doing when theyre online, using social media to connect with other folks, i think that is a very good use of social media right now. Reporter all right, monitoring their Online Activity in this anxious time may be the most important thing and finding balance. One, reading books with your child is a great opportunity for younger kids to read together as a family. Two, making time for active play, whether thats inside or outside, and then really keeping an eye on media time. Reporter so as the storm of all this change starts to calm, maybe you can dial back the screen time hours. Ive doubled down on our automated Parental Controls and we have a new plan that ive shared with the kids. Dont be afraid of your kids boredom. When they get into a state of boredom, thats when their imagination starts to click in. That can be an amazing dividend of this really crazy, unusual time were in. Flowers reporter and make space for the unexpected. The takeaway, not all screens are alike. Tech tools are great right now. Our kids are getting unlimited screen time for school work, communicating with friends, anything creative like for music, but the toy tech apps and by that i mean gaming, youtube, tiktok, social media, those probably still need some limits. No ones asking for perfect parenting right now, robin, but balance seems to make everything better. Yeah. Yeah. Everyone is you know this, becky, theyre just doing the best they can under these unlikely circumstances. Now, you mentioned something about the parental automated controls. Can you just tell people a little bit more how to do that . Yeah, the good news is that almost all the devices your kids are using have these builtin Parental Controls. Apple and google devices have them, so do gaming consoles, most of your wifi routers and all the Cellular Networks allow parents to institute them too. Now is a perfect time to dig in and set them up. That will really set you up for the long haul too, robin. It will. All right, becky, always good to see you. Thank you so much. Now lets go to ginger whos there at home. Good morning again, ginger. Good morning, robin. Weve had our fair share of troubles with sharing an ipad because theyve never used one until this time. So i have to feel for everybody, and becky too. If you are at home and maybe you need something new to watch, well, if you love aliens, history is launching a new series. Get ready for this. Back now with our chief White House Correspondent jon karl who is out tomorrow with a revealing new book, front row at the trump show, covering his quarter century covering donald trump. Jon, thanks for joining us again this morning. This book, i read it as you know when it was in galleys late last year. Like you, ive been covering trump for an awful long time. There is so much here that i didnt even i had no idea about. And i think people are going to be fascinated by the details and i want to get to those in a second, but first, this is such a surreal time at the white house, and you really have three hats right now. Youre a chief White House Correspondent, head of the White House Correspondents association and as i said, somebody whos been covering donald trump for a quarter of a century. Give everybody at home a feel for what its like at the white house right now. George, i think we have a photograph of one of the recent briefings. It is so surreal in that Briefing Room right now with the president coming in virtually every day and the room essentially empty. We have had to take steps at the White House Correspondents association to protect the health of our members, of the reporters that cover the building, and also to protect our ability to continue to cover what may be the most important story of our lifetimes and the only way weve been able to do that is to limit the number of people who come into that room. So we are sitting several seats apart. There are only 14 people, 14 reporters, george. You know what its like at a president ial press conference. There are only 14 reporters sitting in there every time he walks into that room. Yeah, it is such a different scene. As you watch the president deal with a crisis that hes never dealt with before, any sense at all that its changed him, or is he still very much the man you first encountered at trump tower so long ago . Im amazed watching this play out how much seeing every day the way hes handled this crisis is explained in my book. The very same donald trump that we see who is obsessed with the ratings, with the viewers just yesterday he was talking about how many people are tuning in to his press conference, comparing it to the bachelor, the way he takes his own counsel, he goes and he does things by gut. Ive seen this happen over and over again. He may ask for advice, he may seek eventually advice of experts, but hell go and hell do Something Like he did just the other day and say were going to essentially reopen the country by easter and then have to flip around once he talks to the experts and say no, actually, were going to be locked down at least until the end of april. In fact, the peak in terms of number of deaths the president said yesterday would be two weeks from now. He may or may not be right about that but two weeks from yesterday when he said that is actually easter sunday. All while suggesting its not a turnaround. I have to ask you about one story in the book that my eyes popped out. Its a story about how when Mick Mulvaney came in as the new acting chief of staff for the president , he took the whole senior white house staff to camp david for a weekend retreat and he makes a startling suggestion. He asks them all to read a book with this title and i want to make sure im going to get it right. Im going to read it. A firstrate madness uncovering the links between leadership and mental illness. George, i wrote this book because i had seen so much history unfold. I had seen a story i think unlike any other White House Reporter in history. I had been up close and personal with trump and i wanted to write about all the things that i couldnt talk about as it was all happening because we were just so overwhelmed, but as i went back and started reporting on this book and talking to people, i learned about what was happening behind the scenes. This was one of the incredible stories. So some people think of donald trump as a genius. Some people think of him as crazy. But what i learned is that Mick Mulvaney, when he became acting chief of staff, essentially saw him as both. This book argues that the best leaders in history have been mentally ill, and this is what he was having the senior white house staff meet the first time he got together with them as acting chief of staff. Like i said, its just stunning. Jon, its a fantastic book. Congratulations. Front row at the trump show is out tomorrow. Well be right back. Well be right back. And before we go, lets say goodbye to lara. Bye, lara. Shes right side up. She got it right for us, yes. I cant wait for what tomorrow is going to bring. Have a good day, everyone.
