Reporter san jose mom tamara cor corbeli is spending more time with her daughter since the covid19. She is a catering director but has been out of work since the start of last week. I definitely had a few moments where im kind of freaked out and felt overwhelmed by the situation. For the first time in her nearly 20year career, she applied for Unemployment Insurance through the California Employment Development department. If approved, the maximum benefit an applicant achieve is 450 a week. It may need to take care of some supplementary bills but wouldnt come close to covering rent. She is one of thousands of californians who applied for uninsurance benefits this month according to superb lori levy. These are unprecedented times. And what were seeing, certainly you have never seen or witnessed before. The number of californians applying for Unemployment Insurance increased by 34 from the first week in march to the second week in march, outpacing the National Increase during that same time by nearly 10 . Were definitely going to be seeing those numbers continue to climb very quickly upward. Reporter californians also filed 42 more claims the second week in march than the same time last year. It typically takes edd three weeks to process a claim and to determine eligibility. To keep up with the onslaught of new applications, the department is redirecting staff, bringing back recent retirees and looking to other agencies for help. It really is kind of an all hands on tech snacenario. Theyre waiting to receive word from the federal government is whether federal disaster employment will become eligible. That would cover the selfemployed. Recent response to legislation in response to covid19 waives the oneweek waiting period before a worker is eligible for Unemployment Insurance, and loosens work requirements since many may go back to their former employers once businesses reopen. Something corbela is hoping to do. While she waits to hear about her uninsurance employment claim, she says she fears the financial implications of covid19 more than she fears getting sick. How do you navigate the financial means when there is no way to draw an income and youre relying on edd and savings . The california edd has two tips for getting your Unemployment Insurance benefits faster. Apply online and request the debit card as your form of payment as opposed to getting a check. In the newsroom, Melanie Woodrow, abc7 news. Some San Francisco supervisors are proposing a resolution that would call on Governor Newsom and President Trump to declare a moratorium on rent and mortgage payments because of this coronavirus pandemic. Matt heaney says they recognize people are struggling. The thing that they fear more than anything else is what theyre going to do when their rent is due, when their mortgage is due, and when their bills are due. We have to stand up and make sure that every single one of our residents know that we have their backs. San francisco is one of several cities that has stopped evictions because of the pandemic. San Francisco Mayor london breed says she is poised to take action if people dont abide by shelter in place orders. Weve been doing our part to try and communicate to people who may not have televisions or social media, or they may not have been aware. I think that we have done a good job here in San Francisco making it clear. And so now the message is abide by the order or we have to take further steps. And there probably will not be a warning when we have to do so. Mayor breed made the comments this morning on midday live. She also scoffed at President Trumps suggestion that he would like to have the nations economy opened up by easter. Thats just 19 days from now. My response is why are we ill stening to the t . U know, weve had to basically be innovative and work with the private sector to try and get the resources we need in order to make sure that Public Health was protected. The federal government just isnt moving fast enough. President trump says the federal government is looking at ways to ease social distancing and get millions of people back to work, despite the risk of spreading coronavirus. I said i dont want the cure to be worse than the problem itself. The problem being obviously the problem. And, you know, you can destroy a country this way by closing it down where it literally goes from being the most prosperous. We had the best economy in the history of our country three weeks ago. The president s optimism contradicts the advice of many health experts, Public Health experts, but some officials are suggesting loosening regulations in places with low infection rates. Were sharing this story of a palo alto woman with those issues who signed up to try a treatment with a drug that doctors hope might slow the virus down. Abc7 News Reporter david louie gives you an inside look at how the drug appears to have saved her life. Its a story you will see only on abc7 news. David . Hi, dan. Were talking about the drug remedesavir. Maybe you have heard about it. Mentioned by the president s Coronavirus Task force as a possible treatment. Both monica and adrian arima tested positive for covid19. Her ordeal and experience gave hope that the drug might help so many others. We started to feel sick on the way home, on the very last day of the trip. That was three weeks ago. Adrian and monica took a dream trip to egypt, developing fevers and feeling unwell as they returned home to palo alto. They were both admitted to stanford hospital where their symptoms didnt improve. Tests confirmed they had been infected by the covid19 virus. Monica had underlying medical conditions including asthma and diabetes. She developed pneumonia and a persistent cough. With no improvement in her condition, she was accepted into a Clinical Trial to test drug remedesavir developed by gilead sciences. Theyre both at home now in selfisolation. It takes, you know, about a half an hour to get it all dripped in. And i do that every day for five days in a row. And you dont feel the pain. You dont feel anything. Gilead had created remedesavir as a possible treatment for another deadly virus, ebola. There is nothing to lose because they have already tried it on people for the ebola, and there is not too many negative feedback as far as sideback, but it just doesnt work on ebola. The arimas knew about remedesavir because adrian was the longtime general counsel at gilead. He was not a candidate for the trial because he was not as sick as monica. Monicas pneumonia began to improve with the drug. She had also been taking antibiotics. I think after two days i can see that i feel better. The only part that is not feeling better is my coughing. Five daily doses of remedesavir paved the way for her hospital discharge after two weeks. She is now recovering at home, resting in bed much of the time, suspicious of the nile river cruise they took where several tour groups shared buffet meals. At the time they were not aware that the virus was circulating in egypt and that it would sicken a number of tourists. Monica is fortunate. Her decision to take part this the drug trial appears to have been a lifesaver. Adrian arima points out that remedesavir was not created specifically to treat covid19. Its through drug trials and patients like monica that doctors and Health Officials are studying its potential as more people get the virus. Were live working from home, david louie, abc7 news. Services that for now are being supported by soldiers like lieutenant cameron quach, who also works as an auditor for ernst young. This morning came from the white house this afternoon. Because of the rate of the number of cases, you may have been exposed before you left new york. And i think like Governor Desantis has put out today, everybody who was in new york should be selfquarantining for the next 14 days to ensure that the virus doesnt spread to others. New york city has seen its infection rate double just about every three days, and has the most cases anywhere in the country. As tens of thousands of californians suddenly lose their jobs or work fewer hours, thousands are also losing Health Insurance. Just as the pandemic is spreading. This is an absolutely the worst time for people to be uninsured. Public Health Officials say thousands are losing coverage provided by employers. Not only that, gig workers and hourly employees are earning less and can no longer afford premiums. They may choose food over health coverage. So the number of uninsured may skyrocket. We expect as people lose their hours, lose their jobs, theyll also lose coverage. And thats not just tens of thousands, thats hundreds of thousands, if not over a million californians. Public Health Officials say its not only vital for personal medical care, insurance is a vital tool for stopping the spread of coronavirus. We want people to be ensured, to have a doctor, to have a usual source of care, to be able to call if they have the symptoms so that they can get screened and tested. We need that, not just for them, but for the Public Health effort of controlling this and containing this coronavirus.
