There are now close to 1,500 people infected with thousands more awaiting test results. The number of deaths is also steadily rising. At least 27 people have died from coronavirus in california. President trump declared a major disaster for the state because of the pandemic. Santa clara county reported two more deaths yesterday from coronavirus pushing the regional total up to 13. It has by far the most cases in the bay area topping 300. Every county now has reported cases. Napa county confirmed two residents there have been infected. It was the last county in the region to have a case of the disease. In the bay area total is now just short of 800. Abc 7 news viewers and lake and mendocino viewers are asking for updates where they live. Mendocino reported one case and so far lake county hasnt had any but closing waterways, camp grounds, hotels and Vacation Rentals and rv parks. As i mentioned a couple minutes ago, futures trading was stopped overnight because the markets plunged 5 , thats an automatic trigger. They closed off the streets and they have electronic traffic signs to guide people on where to go and they have a Huge Police Response out here. They say they arent quite sure what to expect but they want people to know they only have about 350 tests a day. So, they plan to run out and theyre really asking for people if they dont have symptoms, not to come here. That you will be screened before you are allowed to have a test. They have to prioritize who they can give these tests to because they only have so many. This is happening at the hayward fire station number 7 on huntwood avenue. Theyre opening this at 9 00 this morning. And its not limited to hayward residents. Although, again, they only have so many tests. Anyone who is experiencing symptoms of the illness, those are the folks who would come to be tested at this site. It is open to anyone regardless of income or immigration status. So any Community Member who is facing symptoms would be allowed to become tested here at the site. The city of hayward is doing this to help ease the burden for hospitals. Theyre able to do this because theyre partnering with a lab out of menlo park and they bought the tests from that private lab. Now, look at this live picture. I want to give you a an idea. What the demand could possibly be today. A woman set up her chair here and was sitting on the lawn here at 5 00 this morning. Wanting to get a test. These tests wont be administered until 9 00. She came out waiting on the lawn for four hours. She said she does feel some symptoms and we suggested why dont you wait in your car to keep a distance from everyone. Could be quite a crowd here today. Thats why theyre blocking the street, but, again, dont come unless you have symptoms. This will be open today from 9 00 to 6 00. Live in hayward, amy hollyfield. As coronavirus cases continue to increase in the bay area so does the need for medical supplies. Major hospitals are in need and now asking for donations. Items include n95 and surgical masks, unopened packages of gloves and unused protective goggles and sanitizer. Ucsf students hit the front lines yesterday. More than 8,000 items have already been donated. We are getting masks, surgical masks and n95 masks which a lot of people bought for the wildfires and also getting a lot of gloves, goggles and face shields and bunny suits. Ucsf is opening three locations. One in the mission and another at mt. Zion and the third in oakland at the childrens hospital. Stanford health is also accepting donations. Santa clara county supervisor cindy chavez held a different kind of press conference to update the response to the coronavirus. She kept her social distance yesterday by holding a Conference Call with Santa Clara ValleyMedical Center chief paul lorense and other officials. They are preparing to treat a surge of patients if this virus spreads. That plan would include looking at all 2,100 adult beds that we can equip and staff for critically ill patients. Loren says people without covid19 would be moved to other facilities to accommodate seriously ill patients. Scientists at ucsf are on a mission to break down the virus and identify which proteins it interacts with. That information would provide a critical road map for scientists. A lot of effort out there trying to develop drugs to target the virus, which is great. Were taking a different approach. Were looking in step by step, were starting at the exact protein but were branch branching out and expanding that list to see what we have that could sort of cordon off the virus. Ucsf researchers have found about 50 drugs that are already fda approved that interact with the same proteins as the virus and theyre looking for more. B. A. R. T.
