The deserted weekend streets now just symbolize everyday life in our community. And this morning the impact of the coronavirus seeping further into the bay area, nearing 700 confirmed cases and claiming 11 lives. Good morning, its march 22. We have much to get to as our lives slowly begin to adjust to the coronavirus outbreak. First lets get over to lisa argen for a look at the forecast. Good morning. We are talking about more spring showers as you look live, a system spinning off the Central Coast will bring up shower activity into the south bay. The peninsula, maybe even a thunderstorm. We just got this video from state officials moving tons of muchneeded medical supplies for health care workers. Hundreds of thousands of masks, face shields and gloves. Governor newsom is requesting even more from the federal government including another 20 million n95 masks. Last night he talked about where the state stands in making room for covid19 patients. Some of the projections we put out make it clear we will need additional 19,500 beds in order to meet our midway projections as it relates to the issue of covid19. We have Surge Capacity within the Hospital System of little over 10,000. So were out there trying to procure 10,000 units. I mentioned the 10,000 beds. Part of his plan calls for working with the army corps of engineers to convert hotel rooms, even College Dorms and other facilities into rooms where patients can be treated. A surge in patients is forcing john muehr to consolidate in the east bay, closing centers in san ramon, concord. They will shift to berkeley, walnut creek and pleasenton. Theyre also taking extra precautions with patients. Anyone who comes in, will get a mask. Santa clara will provide shortterm care for people who do not have covid19. And speaking with reporters, President Trump talked about the extreme need for supplies and he said governors like gavin newsom are free to work on their states needs. If gavin can go out and order gowns faster or other things faster, thats good. We have a lot of the coordination with the ships that were sending in, as you know, medical ships were sending in and even cruise liners, we will be sending in cruise liners to some areas, particularly california and new york. If somebody can do something faster. If they can order that mask faster than us. I want them to be able to do it. Some people cant leave President Trump also shared he doesnt believe other states necessarily have to issue shelterinplace orders like here in california. A major breakthrough in testing thanks to one south bay company thats received emergency approval from the government for its coronavirus tests with a 45 mf minuminute n time. This is great news because current tests take days. Which means you collect the specimen. You can be out of a car or pretty much anywhere but then it gets batched with a bunch of other specimens, spent in to a Reference Lab, that takes time and the Reference Lab takes time to build up the batches and run the batches. All of that adds up to days of turnaround time. So what we developed is a Reference Lab quality test that can be run in the point of car for about 45 minutes or less. An Automated System will read the test and many hospitals in the u. S. Already have that device. Former actor director of the cdc dr. Richard besser talked about that test and why results come in a matter of hours instead of days will make a big difference. I think it will help. If youre a Health Care Provider trying to decide whether to put somebody on the floor with other people with covid19 or on to a floor with people who have pneumonia for another reason, having this test will be very useful in that decision making. Dr. Besser also talked about why were seeing more cases in younger people than we thought we would.
