There are now more than 200,000 cases worldwide. About 370 confirmed cases in the bay area and in santa cruz county. Counties have been directed to shelter in place and its unlikely that schools will reopen before the end of the academic year. Sam lacardo will announce relief programs for people out of work or sick because of coronavirus. And theres a bit of good news for people who havent been able to find what they need in the Grocery Stores. Our crews in the field notice the panic buying is slowing down. This morning when a lot of you are waking up to start homeschooling your kids or working from home, they have been up for hours restocking shelves. Fresh fruit and vegetables that are dependent on our health. Amy hollyfield live in south San Francisco. Good morning, amy. We hear about people stockpiling on toilet paper and pasta. You dont think of people binge buying produce but we checked in with the distributors and they say people are doing just that. Theyre really seeing a big run on produce that has a long shelf life that is food like potatoes, onions and bananas. They are getting kind of low on bananas. The big rush happened monday in the stores after that shelter in place announcement was made. This place was hit yesterday as the stores tried desperately to replenish. Yesterday was crazy. Thats all we can say. It was basically like a friday sales. Everybody was binge buying. Were trying to get people, encourage people to keep buying to a regular pace and then that way the supply chain wont fall apart. They say today is looking a bit more normal. So, theyre hoping buyers have settled down a bit. As the stores are getting slammed, restaurants are suffering. So, they tell me some of their restaurant distributors are calling and asking if they want to buy back some of their produce and help them out. Apples and oranges, food that lasts a little longer. The restaurant distributors say their food is not moving so theyre in talks them if they can help. Plenty of food. They can only grow it so fast, though. We have to slow down so we dont mess up that supply chain pointing out bananas, for example, theyre on a three week buying schedule with ecuador, there is a chance they could run out. We all just need to slow it down a bit. Reporting live in south San Francisco, amy hollyfield. Were in this for the long haul. I have a question for you. Is this place only for Grocery Stores and restaurants or does it serve the public . Can i go there and get fresh fruit and vegetables . This is distributors, theyre selling wholesale to our Grocery Stores and our restaurant distributors. My buying instinct in me is kicking in and i want to buy it all. This is not for me. This is for the store to buy and then sell to me. Got it. And we are really thankful that they are doing that job this morning. Amy, we appreciate it. Well see you soon.
