Less than an hour ago Sonoma County announced it would join the shelter in place that took effect at midnight in six other counties. Alameda, contra costa, marin, San Francisco, san mateo and santa clara. In Sonoma County the order begins at midnight tonight. It means limiting travel and activity to only the essentials. Many here knew this was coming, and tonight theyre getting ready. Thank you so much. I appreciate it. Have a good one, okay . Reporter lisa is thanking the few customers that are still coming out to eat at marys pizza shack. Its the slowest its been in over a year and a half that ive been here. Sonoma county likely joining the bay area shelter in place order as soon as wednesday night. The restaurant is changing up food service during the pandemic. Were offering where we can drop it off and send you a photo with your text message where your food is at your front door. Sonoma county posted this on its facebook page, that most Sonoma County fa and city facilities will temporarily close starting march 17th. There were still signs of life downtown, people and cars. But jeweller Nate Auerbach says things are weird and too quiet. Its very reminiscent of the fires in 2017 and of course again last year. Not a lot of people wandering around right now. He is worried what his employees will do during a possible threeweek closure. Were going to take care of everybody as long as we can, but we obviously cant float this forever. Many residents are getting ready to stay home. Im just trying to get the necessary things that you need to survive. I think thats what a lot of people are just going out for that. Lisa is working behind the bar today but worries about tomorrow. Its an eventuality. Whether its today, whether its tomorrow, whether its friday, im eventually not going to have a im going to be unemployed. The shelter in place order which takes effect, again, at midnight identical to the others. Essential travel only. When you do go out, social distancing is of course encouraged. There are six confirmed cases of covid19 here in Sonoma County. Live in santa rosa tonight, Cornell Bernard, abc7 news. All right, cornell, thank you very much. Today is the first day that a shelter in place order is in effect for most of the bay area, and we wanted to see what that really looks like. So we sent out a team of reporters. Abc7 News Reporter luz pena is in San Francisco, but were going again with abc7 News Reporter chris nguyen, live in san jose tonight. Chris . Dan, on a normal day, santana row would be packed with thousands of customers. That is not the case tonight. We did speak to a number of people who all right letting the bay area shelter in place bring them down. At santana row in san jose, it looked like a holiday, but without the tree or lights to lift peoples spirits. Its a very eerie feeling to walk on santana row. Usually this is a place that is bustling with people. You have people all over. Some businesses remain open for business for curbside delivery or doordash. Including mediterranean and left bank brasserie. We need to make sure that theyre taken care of so they can in turn take care of our guests. Just down the road, zazil, which is only a month old is also adapting by offering a special menu for takeout. Were reinventing ourselves to make sure we can continue with our strong pace that we started off with. And more than anything, we just want to be here for the customers. And its not just the restaurants that are switching it up. Barrys, a an indoor Fitness Studio which recently opened at santana row typically draws around 40 people per class multiple times a day. But with the studio closed for the time being its an opportunity for us to really become closer as people. Reporter instructor and personal trainer rio hall is posting athome workouts on instagram to help clients maintain a sense of community. That same kind of spirit of community that we have in the room, ive been able to really see small sense stay connected through the internet. Its really been beautiful. These folks still finding a way to give back, even in times of uncertainty. Were in the hospitality business. Its not time for us to equipment. Its time for us to show what we do and be there for everybody. At this point, nearly every restaurant that remains open in the bay area could use your help. So you might want to check out them for a takeout or consider buying a gift card that you can use at a later date. Abc7 News Reporter luz pena is live for us in San Francisco where she checked out some tourist destinations. And luz, what a difference 24 hours can make. Luz, good evening. Hi, chris. Fishermans wharf at this time would be packed 24 hours ago. That is not the case today. Every store around us closed. We found notices like this one on every door. Our city that is always buzzing came to a halt today. It hasnt been 24 hours since the shelter in place directive, but many are already feeling it. Day one of shelter in place, how you . Im doing good. Im busy, just mostly working. This morning i went out for a run. We compared and contrasted San Franciscos most iconic places. The golden gate bridge, where thousands transit, now empty. Lombard street today, what a sight. And Union Square Like a ghost town, once shopped, now with security guards inside the stores. As we drove around the city, we saw several Police Officers doing rounds. Very quiet. Nothing crazy happening . Not yet. And with empty streets, security is a concern to many. In a statement, sfpd said in part, we will be doing passing calls throughout the city to reinforce public safety. We will adapt our Deployment Strategies as the situation evolves in the coming weeks. And even though this is not a complete lockdown with people able to walk outside their homes for essentials, like walking their dogs, doing exercise and going to the grocery store, this glimpse into the rest of the city shows how the coronavirus has become top of mind for our community. If everybody does it, its going to slow this thing down. We have more time to stay together, because we dont have school and its canceled and were going to be in the same house with all of our family members. So its a great time to really get together. Familybonding. And it is all about that family bonding. Because this is our new reality until april 7th. So lets be kind to each other and keep a safe distance. In San Francisco, luz pena, abc7 news. All right, luz, thank you so much. Droneview7 flew above Fishermans Wharf earlier today. Its officially closed because of the shelter in place. You can see a few bicyclists cycling in the middle of the street. Nearby check out this view of pier 39. Usually its filled with tourists, but its empty now. Remember, seeing public place empty is a good thing. It means people are staying home and doing their part to help flatten the curve. That is exactly right. East Bay Community journalist Melissa Pixcar visited several places to see what life is like during this shelter in place order. Here is her report from oakland. Everyone, it is currently 2 05 in the afternoon. I just got to lake merritt here in oakland. There are still a lot of people out here. A lot of people are out walking their dog, jogging. I dont see a lot of people in groups. The most i am seeing are people are Walking Around in pairs. But other than that, its kind of seems like a normal day here in oakland. And bars have had to close up shop. Some have boarded up. Abc7 news was outside Starline Social Club in oakland where plywood now covers the windows. And not far away the legionnaires saloon on telegraph is boarded up. Bars have been ordered to close during the shelter in place order. They may be prepared for problems, but Alameda County spokesperson ray kelly today said its been calm so far. Were not seeing any type of craziness going on out there. So people get it. They understand that they play an Important Role in us doing this fight. So were so appreciative of that. Now sky 7 is live over the bay area right now to give you a view of traffic as we speak. This is 880 of course by oracle arena, where the warriors used to play. And look at this. At 6 10 in the evening along i80, it is almost sparse. It is actually sparse out there. Very few maybuerters know along 80 at this time in the height of the evening commute. We have seen this scene repeated all over the bay area. People are heeding the shelter in place order in larger numbers. And certainly authorities want all of us to cooperate in this regard. I saw it coming into the city today along main street and market street, which would normally be packed with people there may be a dozen people Walking Around at that intersection at the most. So people clearly as we have seen around the bay area today are paying close attention. As you look live from sky 7, as we pull back down there, is the parking lot for the oracle arena. And the stadium. And as you can see, very few cars. Probably if i had to guess, 10 of the normal number of cars that we might see at 6 00 at night on an evening commute on 880. Isles, i880. You would see so many more cars than were seeing right now. People are paying attention to this order. And that is only going to increase as we go forward. Now abc7 news staff went on Facebook Live and took a tour of the city, answering your questions about the shelter in place order. Brandon and josh, two of our managers. Here is what they found. All right. So check it out. This is the moscone park area. There are some families with kids there. This is not shut down, but again, this one family, normally its really packed. Orderly lines, people who are buying just what they need. Kris reyes is live with another remind theyre the food supply is actually fine. No need to panic. Absolutely, thats a great message. Here at nabilas naturals in hayes valley, theyre trying to keep it business as usual. The owners are business serving customers. You can see he is wearing shelves. Some of the shelves are empty, and theyre getting restocked daily, and for that customers are grateful. Its a snapshot of one corner of the city that feels somewhat normal. Deliveries coming into Grocery Stores. We caught nabilas trucks, another at birite market on divisadero. So far weve been able to get our deliveries in. Were not getting the full orders that we put in, but were getting a lot of it. What are you hearing from your distribuors . We have plenty of food. Plenty of food in San Francisco and the bay area. Plenty of food. Our farmers are not stretched yet. The supply is there. The demand just causing a bottleneck. A wholesaler for nuts and butter says he has no plans to stop his deliveries. My sales are almost like double from normal. At this birite in San Francisco, they have to limit the customer, but not their supplies. A greeter tells coming in only 35 people at a time allowed inside. And they must practice social distancing. I went inside to see for myself. Every aisle was stocked. Plus this. Many shoppers we saw had just one bag or two and not a car load of groceries. I dont have a months worth of groceries that ive purchased. Im just buying it as i need it. Peace. Thank you. Youre welcome. Needed is exactly how the owners at nabilas naturals are feeling. Their doors wide open as their whole hayes valley neighborhood is shut down. A testament to their commitment to community 25 years and counting. Its been great all of us to come together and figure out what we can do to help each other moving forward. Especially in times like this. All right. So here is a different part of the store. You can see lots of produce. Again, that message. p. One thing is the reduced hours. With schools closed around the bay area because of covid19, most students are learning from home, but not everyone has access to high Speed Internet or even a computer. Comcast has taken several steps to make sure every child has access from hot spots to unlimited data to all customers for the next 60 days. No diskoerks late fees, and Free Internet essentials for new customers for 60 days at increased speeds. Were all in this together, and thats a key part of how we want to operate. The expression we could do it two ways. We can keep going back every day or every week. Were going big. And thats where mitch mcconnell, thats the way he wants to go. Thats the way i want to go. I think we want to get it done. Among those who could get help, the Airline Industry and small businesses. A major part of the president s stimulus plan would be to send cash directly to every american. 7 on your sides Michael Finney is working from home. He joins us with insight into how that might work. Michael . Hey, guys. The president says he wants every american to receive direct cash payments. Now to make up for a loss of income and a slowdown in businesses. What isnt clear is how much well get and who will get it. And whether income limits might apply. Which would really affect a lot of people here in the bay area. Democrats suggested payments of around 4500. Senator mitt romney has proposed 1,000. The idea is to help workers and prop up a coronavirushit economy. Now it wont cureall our ills, but economists, bank rate. Com says it will help. Under the best of times, most americans are living paycheck to paycheck. And now we have a situation where some americans are having to go without a paycheck at all. And so i do think that it makes a difference. Its not going to be a panacea. So congress has to hash out all the details. Thats going take a little while. A lot of people saying its much more realistic to think were going to receive this money in the middle of april, maybe towards the end. Here is my question to you. If you get this money, will it help your situation . Not just well, it would be nice to spend more money, but would you get over a hump . Is a thousand dollars, is a thousand dollars check enough . Let me know. Please contact me here at the station. Michael finney, thank you so much. And three weeks of sheltering at home is a challenge for many of us. Its especially hard on seniors who sometimes have limited options to socialize. A help line has seen a big increase in calls for help. Abc7 News Reporter david louie looks at whats worrying our seniors. He is live from home. Hi, david. Hi, ama. You know, isolation limits the ability to express anxiety, especially with Senior Centers closed and no way to interact with friends. Well, seniors are finding a sympathetic ear at the friendship line which operates across the bay area. Isolation is the new norm. You know people are hold up at home. Some op them are alone. Seniors in in particular have lost access to activity and lunch programs where they can socialize and share their worries. Where do they turn now . Were putting a lot of concern nationally on the economic recession or the threat of that, but there is also the threat of the emotional recession. Patrick created the friendship line 47 years ago at the institute on aging. Its staff and volunteers have seen a substantial increase in calls from seniors who need to express their anxiety about needing someone to comfort them. One woman was talking to me today about being a child in the whole duck and cover era, you know, from when we were, you know, 7 or 8 years old, and how scary that was. And she said im feeling that same way. She said im feeling like a child that is scared and i want my mother. The friendship line takes calls from all over the bay area, nearly a quarter million calls last year. The volunteers now work at home instead of the call center to conform to social distancing. But their reassuring voices are there. Some are students studying psychology. Others are seniors themselves with empathy for their peers. We are able to give callers reassurance. We dont give medical advice. We give them a friendly voice, a listening ear, reassuring them that life is going on, and we will always be there for them. The hope is that by providing a reassuring voice, the friendship line can prevent a lonely senior from falling into deeper acelati deeper isolation as the entire bay area shelters at home. 8009710016. Well also post the number on our website, abc7news. Com. Researchers say that isolation can impact a seniors health, suppressing their immune system and can make them more vulnerable to that coronavirus. Were all concerned about. David louie, abc7 news. All right, david, thank you for that. A few countries are being hit as hard by the virus right now as italy. The number of cases has exploded with more than 31,000 right now and 2500 deaths. A week ago today, there were 10,000 cases and 631 deaths. Italian journalists fulvio spoke to us from his home in rome. He advises everyone living under a lockdown not to try to escape the virus because you just cant. We had cases in italy where someone who was staying in milan thought they could outsmart coronavirus by going to their beach house in sardinia. And as a result, sardinia has more cases of coronavirus than they ever expected. And this has happened all over the country. He says his country is paying the price for underestimating the virus and the number of cases, deaths, and the impact on the health care system. But he adds there is now a sense of community unlike any time in recent memory. People pulling together in a crisis. An east Bay Organization that has provided medical equipment during crises around the world now finds enormous need for help in its own backyard. See where the final stockpile of masks and gowns is going. Thats next. And taking a live look at 680 through walnut creek, look at this. Traffic noticeably lighter. While we initially told they were considered a nonessential business and would close during the shelter in place order, today the San Francisco department of Public Health tweeted dispensaries can continue to operate as essential businesses during this time while practicing social distancing and other health recommendations. Mayor london breed echoed this during a News Conference held earlier today. Many medical supplies are in short supply, especially in underserved communities. Leslie brinkley visited a nonprofit that is getting those badly needed supply out the door today. Weve got the head covers. Weve got the isolation gowns. Medshare is usually the Guardian Angel of medical supplies around the globe. A tsunami, a hurricane . And this nonprofit ships out surplus medical goods donated by hospitals. But now the need is in their own backyard, and the surplus of coronavirus supplies has dwindled down to these final boxes will be picked up by ups tonight and delivered to 46 clinics in california that serve a vulnerable population, including the homeless and the elderly. 12 are right here in the bay area, including a women and childrens shelter in san leandro, and medical clinics in San Francisco, oakland, and berkeley. Part of what were hearing is there is a gap in supply. Theyve ordered supply, these mask and gowns and gloves, but some are being told they wont receive them until midapril, and some folks arent being told when theyll receive them, and some folks are having their orders outright canceled. Medshare is working feverishly to get these in the right hands right away, and blue shield of california is funding the distribution costs. The biggest need right now as i understand it is for masks and protective gear. And thats something that our Health Care Workers who are really at the front lines, working with individuals who are ill and maybe affected by the virus so that those Health Care Workers can be protected. No more volunteers are allowed here. And with the disruption in the Global Supply chain, it will be weeks before more n95s come in from ohio and more surgical masks and gowns come in from china. In san leandro, im leslie brinkley, abc7 news. Take a look behind me once again. This is 80 at the toll flooz the bay bridge. Is that not Something Else at 6 42 on a tuesday evening . This is demonstrating something thats really going on that has been happening really around the world and around the country. While there are very few positives about the novel coronavirus, there is one aspect of finding a once in a lifetime opportunity for researchers. They get to see what the world might look like without tons of pollution. Seeing the streets of major cities nearly empty of cars is strange enough. But rflpers say the view being created in space is even more startling. This will be a historic opportunity. Professor ron cohen is a researcher at the university of california. We first met him as he was blanketing large sections of the bay area with sensors that track the density and location of pollutants in the air. They were able to capture a sudden drop along the bay bridge on a day when caltrans temporarily shut the span down. Now he says satellites are documenting similar changes on a global scale. We need is that the emissions of no2 which are from cars primarily, but also trucks internationally are dramatically lower as people arent allowed to move around. These images from satellite monitored by nasa and the European Space agency show the dramatic drop of no2, or nitrogen dioxide over china in a little more than a month. Researchers expect similar effects in other areas forced to shelter in place. I imagine it does show here and other places of reduced emissions related to traffic. For researchers, this is Something Like a rare comet streaking by, a trove of data pointing to what the world might look like in the future. To be able to say what the change in air pollution would be if the vehicle fleet were suddenly all electric as an example. An unexpected scientific windfall from an otherwise devastating and frightening event. But utterly fascinating to see the effect on pollution, as you look at the golden gate bridge, also virtually deserted tonight.
