As we reported minutes ago, theres troubling news out of france, projecting that half of as we reported minutes ago, theres troubling news out of france, projecting that half of the countrys crit as we reported minutes ago, theres troubling news out of france, projecting that half of the countrys critical coronavirus cases may be people under the age of 60. Abcs david muir spoke with the nations top expert of Infectious Diseases about younger patients. Things are definitely going to get worse before they get better. If you look at the pattern of the outbreak as it hit Different Countries and different cities within countries, and i talk specifically about china, about south korea, and most recently italy, what happens is that you putter along with cases, a few, then you reach a point of inflexion, where it takes off. If you look back at the history of outbreaks, you get this big, big peak. Then it starts to come down. If you leave the virus to its own devices without trying to interfere with it. We have the opportunity now, even though we will still continue to see an acceleration of cases, we have the opportunity to blunt that peak and essentially make it more of a mound, which would mean less sick people and less death. But thats not going to happen spontaneously. I wanted to ask you before you go about the reports out of france over the weekend of the hundreds in Critical Condition, potentially, they reported half could be under 60. What does that tell you, and perhaps more importantly, what do you know right now about who has this right now in the u. S. , what the demographics are . What are you seeing in americans right now . Well, its not well, the number in america is still low. But were seeing the patterns that we saw in china and that we saw in south korea, which is that if you look at the people who get into trouble, they are overwhelmingly weighted towards individuals who are elderly and individuals who have underlying conditions that compromise their ability to fight the infection, like Heart Disease and lung disease. You will always see outliers of individuals who are otherwise young and well, who wind up getting into trouble, getting seriously ill, and even dying. Im very interested in them, we want to follow up on those reports from france that say that there are several people. When i heard that, i called up some of my colleagues, some of whom i trained years ago in my own group in italy, and i said, im hearing this about france, what are you seeing in italy . Italy admitted, we are seeing a few people, a minor proportion, but they certainly are there, of younger people, in their 40s and 50s, who are getting seriously ill. But he confirmed that the overwhelming majority of the people who get into trouble, the average age of the people who really get sick and die is 80 something years old. Our thanks to david there, and dr. Fauci, who says again, there will be millions of tests in the coming weeks and people, they really want to know that timeline, zohreen, because as we mentioned, time is of the essence. I think theres so many questions about equipment too. The ventilators. Also dr. For free help, call 1800quitnow. Weve been seeing it for a few days now. It cannot be stressed enough and weve been saying it for a few days now. It cannot be stressed enough that everyone, of all ages, needs to comply with social distancing guidelines. So many are still not getting the message. I spoke earlier with dr. Patel, a Public Health expert and pediatrician at columbia university, about the number of topics including the surge of cases in italy and how it compares to the u. S. We arent really sure why italy had such a huge surge in cases. Theres a lot of theories going around. One thought is that italy had communitybased transmission, so coronavirus was already there before officials caught on. Another one is people didnt realize how quickly they were spreading it amongst each other, especially in hospitals. I think the fact that they were on that trajectory, and that our numbers are mirroring italy and iran, i think thats why Public Health officials, our federal government, have all kind of stamped down and said, now is the time, we really need to act. We are a little bit late. Admittedly. You know, were late not only on enforcing these guidelines, but were also a little late on testing. But hopefully with these new measures now, we will not get to where italy is. People are getting the message that you can be asymptomatic, show no symptoms, but still have this virus, still be a carrier, still infect others. So a large portion of that asymptomatic group, millennials. The white house really hammered the point in the latest briefing saying that its those millennials who are crucial in fighting this coronavirus. So how do you get that message across that millennials and young people need to take this pandemic seriously . This is all on millennials right now. Millennials are the ones who, according to all the data we have, should not have a very serious illness course, if they get infected with coronavirus. And because of that, there may be a false sense of security. What is the one thing you would say to try to hammer that point that they should take this seriously . I would say, if you break the isolation guidelines, if you dont stay home when youre sick, you could create a Ripple Effect in this country that will hospitalize and or possibly kill hundreds if not thousands of people. When it comes to personal protective gear, theres been a lot of concern those on the front lines doctors, nurses dont have the masks, the gowns, to fight this thing, to treat patients. There are great concerns here for that. Youre hearing right now a lot of concerns about our health care system. You know, 100,000 icu beds and only so many respiratory ventilators. But the personal protective equipment, the gowns, the gloves, the n95 masks and the facial shields are also in short supply. Im hearing reports from my colleagues all over the country about how they have to share n95 masks or how they have to create other ways to see these patients. We need to be a little bit more restrictive about whos actually coming in contact with these patients and if its absolutely necessarily. But while Health Care Professionals are kind of trying to ration these supplies, we need to be absolutely certain that were getting more supplies to them that were helping out with Health Care Surge capacity, and that the public is not rushing in to go to the doctor, the urgent care, or the hospital if they dont have to. That is such an important point. When it comes to millennials, i know they dont like to be talked to, zohreen, but this is such an Important Message they need to get. You know, everything always boils down to them, right . Covering the election the last many months, its always, well, whenever the Millennial Vote goes. Another big, highpressure issue for them. Coming up, the mix and social distancing. s. What are the three ps . The three ps of Life Insurance on a fixed budget are price, price, and price.
