This morning, well break it all down the president s response, the economic fallout and the latest efforts to control the pandemic. Our guests, the nations top expert on infectious diseases, dr. Anthony fauci and treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin. The pointman on the economic response. Plus, the powerhouse roundtable on the political fallout. Announcer from abc news, its this week. Here now, chief white house correspondent, jonathan karl. Good morning and welcome to this week. We want to get right to the latest developments on the coronavirus pandemic. There are now over 156,000 cases confirmed across the globe. And more than 5800 deaths. Spain is now in lockdown. France and israel are closing restaurants and other nonessential businesses. And here at home, the numbers continue to climb. Take a look at this map from last week, and now there are more than 2900 known cases in 49 states and washington, d. C. Thats every state except west virginia. At least 59 deaths have been reported. Our fight against an invisible enemy has turned life in america upsidedown. Mass gatherings put on hold. Almost 26 Million Students are out of school and more and more of us are working from home. As our nation faces this crisis, our goal each day is to provide you with were reliable information, to separate rumor from fact. To understand the true scope of this pandemic and what should we do to protect ourselves, our families and our neighbors. To be blunt, your ability to make informed decisions is impaired when we hear things like this we have contained this. Pretty close to air tight. When you have 15 people and the 15 within a couple of days is going to be down to close to zero, thats a pretty good job weve done. This is a flu. This is like a flu. Anybody that needs a test gets a test. If an american is coming back with testing, we have a tremendous testing set up where people coming in have to be tested. Each of those statements were either highly misleading or flatly wrong and further misinformation in a primetime Oval Office Address this week caused more confusion. This is a time we need to trust the information coming from the federal and when any inaccurate information impairs our ability to understand whats happening. This is not a matter of political spin, this is now a matter of life and death, health and sickness. This morning, we will try to get more clarity. Our first guests joins me now is dr. Anthony fauci. Dr. Fauci, thank you for being here. You have said there are going to be coronavirus cases and youve talked about flattening the curve. We have all seen the graph. Lets take another look at the graph now, trying to slow the spread of the disease. But one thing that that graph is missing is numbers. Right. I know you dont have precise numbers. Can you try to help us understand when will life get back to normal, how long does this last . You know, its going to be a matter of, you know, several weeks to a few months for sure. If you look at the dynamics of how outbreak curves go, you just need to take a look at china and take a look at south korea right now. With china, they went to their peak and they are coming down right now. Just a day or so ago, 11 new cases in china, which is miniscule compared to where it was. Korea is starting to flatten and maybe come down a little bit. If you look at that bracket all of that was a couple of months, a month and a half for china and about the same. Although you cant predict accurately the way you interfere with that and not only diminish the peak of the curve, but even perhaps the duration, depends on the effectiveness in which you do the kinds of controls youve been talking about. The containment and the mitigation. Do we think that korea and china are largely through this . Its over for now and hopefully for good. But the one thing that we have to keep an eye on, jon, is that china really dramatically did what we call social distancing, they just shut down the country as they start getting back to normal personal interaction, i hope we dont see the second blip but its possible. So were looking, you know, favorably at the fact that china is coming down but we also want to look carefully to see what happens when they resume normal life. Thats one of the things that were interested in. Hopefully it will stay down but it possibly could come back up. That flattened curve suggest by flattening the curve, by doing all the mitigation it actually lasts longer. Right. Is the same number of people ultimately get infected . No, not at all. As a matter of fact. The way the curve is shown on the graph you showed it might look like the area under the curve is the same, that would be misleading, jon, the peak is lessen and the numbers total will be less. So you are probably the most trusted person on this, are you confident that the federal government is doing everything that needs to be done to contain this . Right now, yes, absolutely. The fact is, what i like to see is when people look at what were doing and say youre overreacting. For me, the dynamics and the history of outbreaks is youre never where you think if you think youre in line with the outbreak youre already three weeks behind, so you got to be almost overreacting a bit to keep up with it. The New York Times had a story this weekend about the worst Case Scenarios and some projections that were presented they say at the cdc, about a month ago, lets take a look at these. 160 million to 214 Million People infected in the united states, 2. 4 million to 21 Million People hospitalized, 200,000 deaths perhaps as much as 1. 7 million deaths. First of all, what do you make of those . So whenever people model and take a model, which is exactly what that is, a model is only good as the assumptions as you put into the model. When you do a model, what happens if the lowest here and the highest . The worst Case Scenario is either you do nothing or your mitigation or containments dont succeed. So although thats possible its unlikely if we do the kind of things that were essentially outlining right now help me out, whats the range of possibility here, how many people do you think based on what were doing, based what you know and your expertise on this, what are we talking about . I dont think its that worst. Because i think what were doing is going to have an effect. The president s decision to essentially have a major blocking of travel from china that already had an effect of not ceding the way in europe, italy didnt do that and i feel so badly because i have so many friends there. Theyre getting hit hard. What were doing now with the other travel restrictions, so you block infections from coming in and then within is when you have containment and mitigation, and thats the reason why the kinds of things were doing that may seem like an overreaction will keep us away from that worst Case Scenario. So are we prepared for whatever you think our worse Case Scenario. Saw seema verma say this week that there are about 13,000 respirators in stockpile. 13,000 when were looking ventilators. Im sorry, ventilators. That doesnt sound that doesnt sound anywhere near enough. It may not be enough if we have a lot of cases. But jon, lets make sure, people need to understand, things will get worse before they get better, what were trying to make sure they dont get to the worst Case Scenario. And look at the way life is starting to stop here, we see different localities doing different things, some cities are banning gatherings of over 250, some 500, what should be done . Should we be seeing restaurants shut down like were seeing happening in israel and spain right now, should we basically be in shutdown mode . You know, what we should be doing is absolutely making it much, much different, not business as usual. You got to just chill down. Some areas of the country, particularly the areas where its clear youre having a lot of community spread, maybe more vigorous in shutting things down. Right now, people are taking things on their own. You say 50 people is the limit and then people say, we dont want anybody. Were going to shut down things. The number doesnt matter. It matters is how densely packed in people are. Exactly. But we dont want to lose sight when youre doing that interaction, youre trying to calm down, chill, slow down, we got to make sure that the vulnerable ones are the ones that we protect. The vulnerable, the elderly and those with underlying conditions. Those are people who say, should you stay in your house, not go to a movie or a restaurant . For the most part, maybe most people shouldnt do that. The ones who really should about do that are the vulnerable ones. Or the ones living with the vulnerables. Exactly. What about travel restrictions . Are we going to see Domestic Travel restrictions . We have hotspots. Should there be travel restrictions . When we sit around at the task force we talk about every possibility. Travel restrictions within the country havent seriously discussed. They have been discussed, but not seriously discussed. I dont see that right now in the immediate future. But remember, were very open minded about whatever it takes to preserve the health of the American Public. So not under consideration but possible. One final question on this social distancing. Lets take a look at the press conference in the rose guard on friday. We saw the president s noted shaking hands with many of the executives. We saw you, touching the microphone and then touching your face. Just okay, tell me. Two things there, jon, im working on getting the boss to do this. I may not be successful but were working on it. Sometimes there are things you have to do. If i didnt put the microphone down, you would have seen the microphone in front of my face like that. What are you doing to protect yourself . Im practicing as much social distancing as i can. I dont go out. I just dont go i have a job thats an 19hour a day job. I have no interest on going to movies, to restaurants or getting on a plane. Dr. Fauci, thank you for being here. We appreciate it. Good to be with you. Coming up, the coronavirus isnt just a Public Health threat, its a threat to the health of our economy. Did you speak to the president at all through the course of these negotiations . No. Why not . Why not . Theres no need for that. Mitch mcconnell and i spoke. He said Steve Mnuchin carries the ball so i negotiated with him. That was Speaker Nancy Pelosi on her relationship with treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin. As doctors and scientists lead the Health Effort on the coronavirus, mnuchin and pelosi are running point on the Government Intervention to shoreup the government. The economic repercussions are global. The stock market officially entered bear market territory this week, the Dow Jones Industrial average losing more than 20 of its value. Treasure secretary Steve Mnuchin joins me right now. Thank you for being here. Thank you, good to be here with you. So gary cohn, the president s former top economic adviser said he feels were now in a recession, is he right . I dont think so. But i think the real issue is not the Economic Situation today the real issue is what economic tools are we going to use to get through this. This is an unique situation. Were clearly going to have a slowdown. Were addressing issues for small and mediumsized businesses. Later in the year, the Economic Activity will pick up. As we confront this virus. The president on friday was touting stock market gains. The market bounced back quite a bit on friday. Were still in a bear market, is it kind of odd to hear the president talking about how great the stock market is doing when were by any definition in a bear market . The president is focused on the stock market, because its just one indication of the economy that gives people confidence. What you saw, the stock market reacted very positively to bipartisan bill, also to the fact that were ramping up testing dramatically, and the fact that we have these Big Companies helping us in a Public Private partnership. The market, not just the market acting severely negative to the Oval Office Address, can you help me understand what happened there . The president said several things, he said that cargo would be banned coming in from europe. He failed to mention that the american citizens would not be subjected to the ban. He said Insurance Companies were going to cover all costs of treatment to coronavirus. These were all false statements. How in an Oval Office Address, statements about the president s own proposals end up being wrong . Let me first comment on your reaction to the stock market. The stock market is going to go up and its going to go down. We cant focus on every day the move. As it relates to the Oval Office Address, the president was very clear, he wanted to address a very important point. Which was he made the move to shut down travel so that we shut down more cases coming in. He wanted to reassure the American Public, i dont think in an Oval Office Address you can address every single issue as youre discussing it. And think, you know how does he get things wrong about his own proposal . I dont think he got it wrong at all. Cargo is not banned. We were very clear that people misinterpreted the comment on cargo. And we immediately put out a statement to clarify that. The president said this is similar to china and china cargo is not banned. What caused this turn in the president , clearly he wasnt taking the pandemic very seriously early on and now with these measures he appears to be taking it very seriously . What caused that change in the president s approach . I think the president has been listening to the medical professionals from day one. And as dr. Fauci just said, the situation is evolving. We clearly saw a situation where the caseloads in other countries were increasing, a large, vast majority, i think it was like 75 of the cases we had were as a result of incoming travelers and the president made very decisive decisions quickly and if you look at what weve done, and let me be clear, the president has instructed me well use whatever tools we have whatever tools we dont have well go to congress on a bipartisan basis and get more tools. The speaker and i are already in conversations about airlines, which is critical to us, hotels, cruise ships, more lending, more liquidity, some type of stimulus. So as ive been saying, i think were in the second inning of nine innings and well use whatever tools we need to make sure the economy and hardworking americans get through this. One of the things that the president mentioned was the idea of google putting a website to facilitate testing. Lets take a listen to what he said. Google is helping to develop a website, thats going to be its going to be very quickly done. Unlike websites of the past to determine whether a test is warranted and to facilitate testing at a nearby convenient location. That sounded really promising but the company developing the website, which shares a Parent Company with google, put out a statement shortly after that, saying, were developing a tool to help triage individuals for covid19 testing. In the early stages of development and planning to roll out testing in the bay area, with the hope of expanding more broadly over time. Information so important to be accurate, this made it sound like well be able to go on google and do this and this isnt even developed in a Pilot Program yet. Google has made commitments to us. Theyve been incredibly helpful. I want to thank google and all the tech companies. Lets focus this is all of corporate america, small and mediumsize businesses coming together and as ive said, the president is bringing all the companies to make sure whatever resources we need industry is working with the government. When do you think that website is up and running . I really dont know. As quickly as possible. Id rather focus on is when is more money coming to the American Public. Whats much more important is, we need to focus on the airline industries, this is an unprecedented situation. Theres lot of workers, hotel and other travel industries. The president is going to use all the tools in our toolbox and well work with congress on a bipartisan basis and this bill was very important to get workers money in their pockets, people who have to be home being quarantined. 20 conversations in nancy pelosi in a day and that may be a record certainly for a member of the trump administration, but the next step will be assistance for these industries that are most directly affected travel, hotel, restaurants, Small Businesses . Absolutely. By the way, people have been commenting on 20 it may have been 80, we were constantly in touch, updating the bill and making changes. Yes, our focus is especially small and mediumsize businesses that are really hit hard. So the president has been, again, blasting jay powell, the fed chairman, calling him things like, his actions pathetic, slow moving, putting us at decided economic disadvantage, so the Federal Reserve pumped 1. 5 trillion into the financial system. Interest rates are at historic lows, biggest rate cut he announced before the financial crisis, what more should jay powell be doing . Well, i think as you know as matter of policy i speak to jay powell almost every single day it would be inappropriate for me to make comments on specific policies. I can assure you, he and i are in discussions every day. They have certain tools, i have certain tools. Certain tools were taken away. Ill go back to congress and ask for and again, were fully coordinated. Do you share the assessment of the president , pathetic, slow moving . Again, as you know im not going to make comments on that it will be inappropriate as treasury secretary. I understand. The president also suggested again on friday that he could fire powell if he wanted to, put him in another position of the fed, is that right . Thats not the reading that most people have of the law. Let me clear im treasury secretary, im not the general counsel. Im not aware of what advice the president has been given. Again, what i want to focus on is, theres an Economic Situation and the American Public should know that the president , the Vice President , the entire cabinet is going to be focused on what economic things we need to do. We have tools, tools we dont have. Well Work Together in a bipartisan way to make sure we protect businesses and individuals that are impacted. And let me just comment, you know, in south korea, 200,000 people who had flulike symptoms were tested, 96 of them did not have the coronavirus. So, the actions that the medical professionals have recommended and the president has implemented hopefully will make a dramatic difference in the spread of this. All right, treasury secretary Steve Mnuchin, thank you for being here. Appreciate it. Thank you. Up next, if you have been to grocery store, chances you are have seen empty store shelves. The closing of schools is a very difficult decision. A lot of children are receiving breakfast and lunch at school. Then if the kids are home, what do the parents do . If the parents are home, who are going to be working in my hospitals . Which is the critical system in all of this. Governor andrew cuomo there making the case against Mass School Closures in new york as more cities and states protectively cancel classes to prevent the spread of coronavirus. Joining me now, former Homeland Security adviser tom bossert, dr. Jennifer ashton and abc chief Business CorrespondentRebecca Jarvis. Dr. Jen, just to pick up there, Governor Cuomo making the case about the downside of closing schools, yet so many other School Districts closing down, whats the right approach here . You know, thats a complex question, jon, hes right to consider all those other factors. When you hear things like school closures, people asked to work from home, not everyone has the capacity to do that, theres a domino effect with the operationalization of that kind of response that is complicated and intricate. What we do know is that its not just about protecting schoolchildren, the good news in this outbreak so far, children tend to be relatively spared in terms of symptoms of coronavirus but that doesnt mean that they cant go on on and act as vectors of spread. This is a part of aggressive social distancing. Its hard to shut down communities and regions without closing schools, though, and thats really the problem here. So, tom, the other thing we have seen just today is, we have seen these images at airports, chicago ohare, of long lines people packed together because theyre doing some screening now for symptoms of coronavirus, but, i mean, dont those lines create other problems . Absolutely, so let me address that school point quickly. There has been a lot of study and research gone into this, while i understand the mayors point, let me be very clear, its not about every city in this country, cities that have enough cases to merit this decision like new york city. New york city merits that decision. He has no data. This thing drives me crazy. Theres data suggest this recommendation. He has no data to support all of his anecdotal concerns about what could happen and what couldnt happen. We can regulate that data, we can answer his questions. While he makes these assumptions is wasting time. I think hes been doing a very nice job of leading new york through this process. I dont think its too late. I think the mayor deserves a lot of credit. I would urge him not to caught into this eightweek delay to take steps, to notice people, to get them planning. So that he can close that School System down. Its the largest in the country. If two weeks he was wrong, he can reassess. Lines at the airports . Lines at the airports, if i were recommending these actions to the president , id say you would get a limited health values out of these limited closures to europe and a economic consequence. Were trying to increase the safety to peoples lives and decrease the pressure on our hospitals without wrecking at our economy. And at this stage, given the exceptions to those travel restrictions, i think that were probably blocking more people from those countries than virus. So, rebecca, i want to get to the markets with you and whether or not were in a recession. We heard doesnt believe were in a recession and were going to recover soon. But first, the practical question, these supermarkets, these empty grocery shelves, there are challenges to the supply chain, how long does that last . Well, frankly, it lasts as long as the grocers stay open and also as the long of the length of this crisis, the Actual Health impact of this crisis lasts. I have spoken to a number of vendors and grocers and the supplies exist, its just getting the supplies into the grocers, into the retailers at this point in time and theyre having to completely change the way that they do business, rather going from factories to distribution centers, then to stores, stores are now saying bring it directly it from the factory to us. Theyre saying we need trucks on the road every single day bringing us updated supplies. They are also limiting the number of supplies people can purchase at this time. I have to say, there are a lot of retailers that have a online presence. If you can purchase it online and pick it up in store, theyre distancing. Or o mnuchins saying that he doesnt think were in a recession . No doubt theres a giant gaping hole in the economy right now. You cant cancel disneyland, nba and march madness shutting down at least for the time being without a substantial economic blow. The chief economist at moodies estimates this will estimate into 100 million. We dont know how long the disease will be here and we dont know how the consumer will respond. We dont know what the longterm government response to this is and what kind of full stimulus package might be put together, those are all unknowns that will lead to a greater or lesser economic challenge for the country. And one other additional aspect i would add to this, i covered the great recession, i was here throughout, the economy, we didnt know that we were in a recession until a year after it wasnt official that we were in that recession until a year after it had started. So dr. Ashton, the other question is whether or not the medical system is prepared for all of this . What is your sense . Are they prepared for the onslaught that appears to be coming . We dont know what the u. S. Crisis Surge Capacity in this country is, jon. It has never been tested to the magnitude of the range of worst Case Scenarios that you diswassed with dr. Anthony fauci. I can tell you, as of friday with the authorization that the president gave for hospitals to enact their Emergency Preparedness plan, right now every hospital particularly in those cities that are experiencing high numbers of coronavirus cases, they are activating their disaster plans. To be clear has to do with supplies, space, systems and staff. When you talk about staff, just one part of that, youre talking about looking at things like bringing in retired nurses, respiratory therapists, recruiting some volunteers from the community. When you talk about space, youll be looking at hotels, schools that are closed, convention centers, Community Centers in case they need to house large number of patients. We have never implemented a response along that level. Right now, thats the concern and thats precisely why when you hear aggressive social distancing measures and steps like tom was referring to that is so critical. If our hospitals get tested to that extent we have to remember, people are still having heart attacks. People are still having strokes and accidents. Those people still need care and when you start to see an implementation of what we call a reverse triage where stable patients are discharged or moved to other facilities, thats a serious situation that we have no idea how its going to unfold. All right, dr. Ashton, Rebecca Jarvis and tom bossert thank you all very much. Well be talking more in the days ahead. Up next, the world has been turned upsidedown by the coronavirus pandemic. The president ial race is no exception. The roundtable is next. President ial race is no exception. The roundtable is next. While our campaign has won the ideological debate, we are losing the debate over electability. I cannot tell you how many people our campaign has spoken to, who have said, and i quote, i like what your Campaign Stands for, i agree with what your Campaign Stands for, but im going to vote for joe biden because i think joe is the best candidate to defeat donald trump. A rare admission by a president ial candidate. Senator Bernie Sanders there speaking on wednesday after another poor showing on tuesday night. So is this primary race a done deal for joe biden . We asked fivethirtyeights nate silver, do you buy that . Remember just a month ago, Bernie Sanders was a democratic frontrunner, it was obviously too soon to count joe biden out. But by the same token, isnt it a little bit early to count bernie out now . Well, not necessarily. Half of states have already voted and democrats have made it clear they prefer biden to sanders. Biden won texas, massachusetts and hell probably end up winning washington state. These are all places that Bernie Sanders was supposed to have done well. So, could bernie still turn it around . Honestly, probably not. Hes currently down by 20 points in National Polls and hes done in polls of all four states set to vote in on tuesday. Including florida, down by 40 points. More importantly, even if sanders did make some type of miraculous comeback, it would be a case of too little, too late. Plus, the biggest story in the world right now, coronavirus seems to be working more toward bidens benefit. In a recent poll, democrats preferred joe biden by 25 points to hand al national crisis. With both candidates cancelling big rallies, theres not much opportunity to build momentum. So, yeah, i buy the campaign is basically over. Whether bernie has a 5 chance, 0. 5 chance we can debate that. Not a whole lot of doubt about the ultimate outcome. Lets get right to the 2020 president ial race with our roundtable. Abc news political director rick klein, associate pressed Washington Bureau chief julie pace, our newest abc news contributor, jonah goldman, and former north dakota senator and abc news contributor heidi heitkamp. This is such a strange situation. We have a debate thats happening tonight, not in front of a crowd in arizona but in a studio here in washington, a cnn studio. What do you expect to see tonight . The question nate raises here, is this primary over . Society has ground to the halt at the very moment the democratic primary appears to be essentially over. Bernie sanders is soldiering on. Rot of h lot of his spotters and his team has been talking about defining moment, finally oneonone matchup. Peoples heads arent wrapped around politics at this moment. He needs such a dramatic change in the story line its unfathomable what could happen to change the trajectory going into tuesday night. So for joe biden, do no harm. It happens a really strange moment. I cant imagine peoples minds thinking about the democratic primary at this time. Whats your read on sanders . I mean, youve covered him. Youve known him for a long time. What is he going to do going into this thing . I think Bernie Sanders will try to do two things, one, hell talk about the exact same policy proposals that hes been talking about for years, hes a candidate who has a cause. He believes in medicare for all, an overhaul of economic and political systems in this country. He sees this as perhaps his last biggest stage to make that case. I also think hell try to push joe biden a little bit. I dont think its going to be as tough as personally critical with Hillary Clinton at this stage in the 2016 race. But he believes that joe biden is on the wrong side on a couple of key issues, including things like the iraq war. Vote from the early 2000s. Does he bring that up . He might. The challenge for sanders now thats not where the American People are. Were focused on a major Public Health and economic crisis right now. Hell be harkening back to issues that are just going to sound a little irrelevant to people. The president did his hastily arranged Oval Office Address that didnt go well. Joe biden previously scheduled the next day had his own address, not in the oval office but on his approach, what he would be doing with coronavirus, the contrast was pretty stark . Yeah, look, first of all, as for the debate, the one piece of advice is, they should both take their surgical masks off before they start talking. No, look, the wednesday night address was the worst nationally televised president ial address in american history. The only that comes was jimmy carters speech. And if President Trump had done what he did in that News Conference on friday, those proposals that tone, he would have been in much better shape. Biden, i think, his strategy vis a vis trump is the same strategy he has with sanders. Dont mess up, be reassuring. That will reinforce his advantages against the president Going Forward and against sanders Going Forward. He doesnt need a gaffe. But this is so strange because we have four states, big states that are voting on tuesday florida, ohio, arizona, illinois, i mean, primary day, we see long lines, we see people packed into precincts, schools, whenever voting takes place, what is this going to look like . Number one, functionality the primary season is over. Florida no matter what is going to come in big. I think ohio is going to come in big for biden. Were at that space where the inevitable is there. I think one point that we need to make here is, biden has another challenge tonight and thats to unify the Democratic Party behind him and so, defending on how he treats bernie, were talking a lot about how bernie treats joe, how is joe is going to treat bernie and how is he going to reach out to those people who are disinfected . Youre having this debate tonight if you didnt the bernie supporters would be absolutely apoplectic. The bernie supporters want this debate, they want to have that national stage, its going to be i think a real challenge for joe biden to unify the party tonight. I do think biden i do think biden and his campaign are acutely aware of that challenge. That one of his missions is to go up there to say to bernie supporters or Elizabeth Warren supporters, theres room for them in his campaign. And he very notably on friday came out in support of Elizabeth Warrens bankruptcy plan. I think youll see similar overtures like that in the debate tonight. Sanders cant get too aggressive, that would be a big mistake on his part. And joe biden recognizes that. Biden try to show not only democrats but the American People this is how a president would react to Something Like this. Sanders signals, he wants the steer the issues. It sounds like it wasnt a concession or an endorsement when he came out and spoke on wednesday. He didnt seem like he was ready to fight out with biden. Hes saying look, i want to ask joe biden these questions. Almost like he wants to conduct a Job Interview with joe biden. To maybe move him a little bit to the left. Get some policy concessions and signal that the democrats singular focus needs to be to defeat donald trump. And it may be that bernie wants to move his supporters with him. He has to have that debate with biden and get biden to basically say the right things so then bernie can be the guy out there working for joe biden. Because i think bernie is absolutely honest when he says, anyone but trump. But hes got to a pretty independent base and hes got to speak to that base and in order to have the tools to do that, the ammunition to do that, hes going to have to get biden to come a little his way. Its kind of ironic, one you sew up the nomination of the Democratic Party you move the center, now theyre moving a little bit to the left to bring that coalition together. Its odd were having this conversation while this pandemic is playing out. Look, i want to put a graphic up of all the sports that have cancelled their events, its every major sport its nba, march madness is done. Hockey, spring training is cancelled. Major league soccer. The masters postponed. All of this, everywhere, ground to a halt. Let me just play one athletes effort to try to make sense of this. This is the Giancarlo Stanton of the new york yankees. Im sorry, its graphic. Ill read what he said. Its unfortunate but i think its the proper measure we need to take now given the situation the countrys in and the worlds in. Its important to know that some things are bigger than baseball, bigger than sports at this moment. Its a reminder that sports is society and society is reflected in sports and the concern from what i talked to people around sports, the concern wasnt just athletes could come down even fans, the images that potentially could come out of mass infections at baseball stadiums, those would have been extremely disturbing. And given the circumstances, it seems inevitable, i dont know how you can overstate what this means. To have this utter shutdown in all of sports in the middle of march madness, in the middle of masters, it shatters any sense of normalcy we feel. This is the question that faces the campaigns. President trump obviously relishes in the rallies that he has already been having for his reelection campaign. How do you gather hundreds, thousands of people into a room right now for a Political Campaign . And what advice do you give voters on tuesday who are going to be packing into Elementary School gyms or Church Basement to vote . How you run a campaign right now is really complicated. I mean, we havent seen this in our lifetime. 9 11 we saw obviously a shutdown of all the airplanes, stopped, we saw that. But the baseball games continued. President bush famously going out and throwing the first pitch. And also, just on the economic side of it, when you cancel a season its not like next season youll play twice as many games, right, this is truly lost Economic Activity its not just delayed Economic Activity and thats going to have real effects going out both politically and economically in terms of peoples lives. Senator, you just came in from north dakota to talk about this. I talked to my friends in south dakota. I read your tweets. Reserve that discussion for later. But talking to my friends back there, many of them think that basically weve lost our minds and were overreacting to all of this. Whats your sense back home . Theres some of that. But as the president comes to this debate with a greater sense of not about politics or economics but Public Health, i think hell bring the middle of the country along. I had a friend who said, i think this is crazy. I sent Newt Gingrichs comments. Hes sitting in italy watching this whole thing happen. Obviously, that kind of reinforcement from people from trusted folks will go a long way in explaining you dont want to be italy, and if were going to avoid being italy, well have to bend this curve much quicker that what italy did. And gingrich is saying this is serious. Take it seriously. We need to take all precautions to make sure this doesnt happen in our country. And i think so often in america now, the really unfortunate thing is, we only believe when somebody is speaking it is somebody we believe. The more you have conservatives coming out, even ted cruz retweeting aocs tweet helps to build that understanding that people have in my part of my the country. And the president s tone, and substance, tone, everything, he was taking it seriously in a way he didnt the day before. Something has clearly changed. And i think that the president is realizing number one this is major Public Health and economic issue and number two, its a problem thats not going to go away. Were not looking at the end of next week and we can get back to life as normal. Hell be dealing this for potentially the rest of this time year of this term. And he has to recalibrate his own presidency, if not, hell probably suffer political consequences. I think one of his challenges, we went into this quarter thinking if we got 2 Economic Growth that was going to be a good thing. All the predictions were something less than 2. Now were in a recession and hell have to find some way to explain that to the American Public and i think he understands the intersection between a Public Health crisis and an economic crisis. The defining moment of his presidency. Unfortunately were out of time. A quick programming note, 20 20 will have a special hour on the covid19 pandemic tomorrow night on abc want to leave you with the sights and sounds of europe on lockdown.
