Reporter we spread germs every day, by touching objects, then our faces, without thinking twice. Viruses spread when you touch your own mouth, nose, eyes. Reporter officials warning us to not do this cant help themselves. How often are we doing it . We asked michelle and greg solo to let us follow them and 8yearold russell and 6yearold twins colin and brandon. As we keep track of how many different items they touch throughout the day, and then how many times they touch their faces. We set up cameras and have producers count. We watch the family get ready for school and work. Colin, breakfast reporter in less than an hour one of the boys touched nearly 70 items, and his face 12 times, before the bus even arrives. When the kids get home from school we start the count again. And now have them put this powder on their hands. Were going to do an experiment. Were going to put glogerm on your hands. In general when you talk about these kind of social distancing measures, welcome back. When it comes to the coronavirus, there seems to be a lot of misinformation out there. Abcs chief medical editor dr. Jennifer ashton sorts it out with our friend diane macedo. How effective are these twoweek isolations in stopping the spread of coronavirus . When you talk about distancing measures, they can be effective in flattening the curve, that means slowing the spread, protecting other vulnerable populations like those people who may have contact with lets say the elderly. And it buys us time. So how much of a help this will be is tbd, to be determined, because time is a factor. I want to get to some of our viewer questions. If im in a situation where i cant wash my hands right away, is Hand Sanitizer the best option until i can get to a bathroom . So many claim Hand Sanitizer really doesnt do anything. Right, and thats incorrect. It is true that if you can get to a sink, soap and water is preferable. But i think people are overthinking this. Wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, dry your hands. If thats not possible, use an alcoholbased Hand Sanitizer. Keep your hands clean. It will be interesting to see what happens to our other circulating infections like influenza. What precautions should i be taking at home, what vitamins should i be taking, if i should be taking my vitamins, should i be stocking up on food and water . First question with vitamins, theres no evidence that vitamins protect us from any virus. But things we can do to keep our immune system functioning at its optimum level, getting enough sleep. Getting regular exercise. That has been associated with a lower risk of getting the common cold virus, for example. And eating well actually can help. Just keep our immune system where it should be. The second question, what should you be stocking up on . The same things that you would be getting if there were a major blizzard or storm coming. So think about what you use on a daily basis. But hoarding, not necessary. Enough for roughly two weeks . Thats what the cdc is recommending. Are we safe to eat in restaurants or pick up fast food from starbucks . What risk are we at with doing this . I think we really have to put this into perspective. We cant live our lives in a plastic bubble. You have to evaluate certain behaviors and say, if i alter this, what kind of risk is involved and what kind of benefit . Incubation period, we see a lot about what happens prior to getting coronavirus, but nothing about when someone stops being contagious after they get it. With a cold or flu, its usually 24 hours after the fever is gone. What is it with coronavirus . We dont know. This virus is not even three months old so we dont know the transmission dynamics. One of those things is how long someone can be infectious after testing positive. We just had a small study we reported on just this morning that suggested the average incubation period is just over five days, with 97 of people who are infected showing symptoms by two weeks. Certainly by 11 days. So were still learning that, but five days is on average. Again, remember, not everyone will show symptoms. Thanks to dr. Jen and our friend diane. Doctors are still researching this, still trying to understand the full scope of the symptoms. My biggest takeaways, dont overthink this, dont live your life in a plastic bubble. And wash your hands, that too. 20 seconds. Coming up, were going to make you feel warm and fuzzy on this wednesday. And because of the coronavirus outbreak, were now learning there will be no Live Audience at the democratic debate in phoenix on sunday. Ines de la cuetara, abc news, in detroit, michigan. A Huge Development right there. A Big Development here. A lot of people, a lot of analysis of this, saying what happens next . Next move, Bernie Sanders . Yes, another debate. But i saw analysis earlier tonight that said, when it comes to how the Democratic Party treats Bernie Sanders in 2020 will be extremely important, because in 2016 many would say it was not nice, and that really splintered the party. In his victory speech tonight we saw biden almost extend an olive branch to bernie supporters saying he hears them, hoping they join his team. Because Bernie Sanders comes with a force, a big group of supporters there who will be outraged if they feel this was not a fair process. Again, we will see what happens. Coming up, the u. S. Our James Longman was among the hundreds trying to leave the country. Reporter there are people everywhere. It looks very clear that a lot of people are trying to get out of italy. Italy has the worst outbreak outside of asia. Thats likely due to its elderly population. And of course the elderly are especially vulnerable. We want to report our James Longman is back in london and under selfquarantine. He was screened at the airport and ordered to selfisolate. There appears to be no similar procedure for americans returning from italy. Some travelers say no one even took their temperatures. The outbreak has set off alarms in the u. S. Nursing home industry. Leaders are calling off visits for all but essential visits to facilities. Coronavirus has a 50 mortality rate among people 80 and older. Industry leaders say the virus may be the most significant issue theyve ever faced. The United Nations is closed to the general public. The u. N. Has also suspended tours and limited staff is on duty. No staffers have tested positive for the virus though. The annual Coachella Music Festival in california has been postponed as well as its companion event stagecoach. Both are reset for october. Thats huge. People plan for almost over a year to attend that festival from all over. They do, and people go every single year. And for this to happen, obviously people want to take that precaution and be safe when it comes to those large festival events. And also when it comes to how we i know. I wont do it. I know. Ive been like this all week. Whats really in my head right now, i was going to say im still going to say it. We have to be careful about how we touch ourselves. Theres no other way to say it, we have to be careful about how we touch ourselves. I touch my face. Are you following experts advice, not touching your face during this coronavirus outbreak . Apparently if youre trying to prevent from doing that, theres a watch for that. The startup slightly robot has reworked one of its watches so that it vibrates if you touch your face. The idea is to create a pavlovs dog type of response when you raise your hands to your mug. Your brain is supposed to internalize the negative feedback. How about a shock collar every time you dont wash your hands after the bathroom . Thats a good one. Be careful, folks. Were all just trying to be safe and take those precautions during this whole outbreak. Coming up next half hour, the russian planes intercepted off the u. S. Coast. First the u. S. Surgeon general sets the record straight on how america is testing for the coronavirus. Ew. Right . Thats why febreze created small spaces. Press firmly and watch it get to work. Unlike the leading cone, small spaces continuously eliminates odors in the air and on surfaces so they dont come back for 45 days. Now thats one flushin fresh bathroom. When it comes to the coronavirus, what steps should we all be taking . We sat down with the u. S. Surgeon general. Heres George Stephanopoulos. Lets give everyone a sense of the scale of the outbreak in the United States. Ive seen some estimates up to 100 million americans could eventually be infected by this virus. Should americans be prepared for an outbreak of this scale . Americans should absolutely be prepared, but that doesnt mean that they should be afraid. Weve been here before. H1n1, sars, mers. We know how to handle this. Really what were trying to communicate to people now is how they can prepare. I tell communities three things. Number one, know your risk. We know older people are at much higher risk for complications. Younger people tend to be protected from the complications of coronavirus. Number two, know your circumstances. Are you going to be in a crowded situation . Are you planning travel . Number three, know the steps that you can take to prepare. I encourage people to go to coronavirus. Gov to learn about how they can prepare. Simple things like social distancing. I dont shake hands. We did an elbow bump. Not touching your face. Washing your hands frequently, washing them for 20 seconds with soap and water. There are things we can do to prepare and not panic. Thats everything that an individual should be doing. What should communities be doing . Italy on lockdown. More and more universities here are closing down, going to remote learning. What kind of Community Measures should be taken at this point . Initially we had a containment posture and thats outward facing, we want to keep cases outside of our communities. That works when you know where the cases are coming from. Originally 95 of the cases were coming from china. Now most of the cases are coming from europe, south korea, iran. Were looking at mitigation. Mitigation means within your community, how do you lower the impact of the virus and prevent it from spreading within those communities . Things like School Closures, pulling down large social gatherings, telework, those are all steps that folks should be thinking about in case they have an outbreak in their communities. We know there are clusters in seattle, in florida, in new york city. Not every community has an outbreak going on right now, but people should know this is going to likely get worse before it gets better. One of the biggest issues we face is a lag, a big lag, in testing. The best estimate ive seen is fewer than 5,000 people have been tested here in the United States. At this point in south korea there had been more than 100,000 tests, the uk has already had 25,000 tests. Why are we so far behind and what should we be expecting as this testing scales up . Its important to understand, cdc stood up a test for the coronavirus in a record amount of time, less than a week. There were problems scaling up the test. We looked at the test that was going on in other parts of the world, they werent being held to the same quality standards that people in america expect and that the fda regulations require. Heres the most important thing, though. The American People dont really care about the total number of tests so much as they care whether or not they can get a test. We have over 1 million tests that have gone out, we expect four million by the end of the week. We want to get to a place where every american can rapidly get tested if their doctor says they should get tested and can get the results back. How long is that going to take . We expect thats the case now. Over 72 state Public Health labs are now putting out the test. When people push for a number, those labs dont have to report back to us, thats why its hard for us to say how many overall tests have been done. 4 million by the end of the week. We have talked to state labs, ive been to connecticut, florida, all over the country. And right now no state Public Health lab is telling me they cant get the test and that theyre having trouble meeting capacity. He my skin gets so tired. This new olay serum feels so dewy, and hydrated. Gives my skin an extra boost of life. Its full of energy. It finally matches me. Im denise bidot, and my skin is powerful. This guy, the park owner in the uk, he put Hand Sanitizer in one of those toy grabber machines. Youve got to use the claw to pick it up. Right. Toilet paper as well. What . Reporter and heres what it looks like inside the pentagon briefing room. With new social distancing measures in place, putting the chairs further apart. Megan tevrizian, abc news, new york. Another Major Development overseas, the british Health Minister has tested positive for coronavirus. Nadine dorries is the first lawmaker in that country infected with the virus. She is selfisolating at home. She says in a twitter post she is more worried about her 84yearold mother who lives with her. Suspension of parliament is being considered. Sounding an alarm about hospital preparedness for the virus. Abc news contributor tom bossert says were just a week away of facilities being, quote, creamed in terms of patients. Bossert says if the white house doesnt move quickly the system will be overwhelmed. If we dont take those steps aggressively and just apply the math of the potential growth of this virus as weve seen it grow in italy, were going to see their Hospital Systems under very negative pressure where they have to start making some very difficult decisions about triage and patient care, and thats where youll see them getting creamed. Thats what i meant by that. I think its why we need to make sure we deliver the message that the social distancing issue and the School Closures and these controversial measures, they will have an end, but there has to be some urgency to when they begin. Bossert coordinated the u. S. Response to global pandemics under President Trump. He resigned in april of 2018 and has not been replaced. Concern about coronavirus is colliding with president ial politics. Former Vice President joe biden and senator Bernie Sanders have both canceled some upcoming events. That followed another big night of victories for biden. He won democratic primaries in michigan, missouri, mississippi, and idaho. Votes were being counted overnight from races in washington. Last night biden started his effort to win over sanders supporters. We need you. We want you. Theres a place in our campaign for each of you. I want to thank Bernie Sanders and his supporters for their Tireless Energy and their passion. We share a common goal, and together well defeat donald trump. Well defeat him together. To break down bidens directories well hear more from abcs political director rick klein. Sweeping victories has him closer than ever to the democratic nomination. Winning in missouri, winning in mississippi, particularly a victory in michigan cuts to the heart of Bernie Sanders campaign. That is a devastating blow to sanders. Thats a state that he won four years ago. If you look at how joe biden was able to take it back from him, it is an astounding display of electoral strength. Winning across socioeconomic and education groups. Keeping his big strength among africanamerican voters. This is a message. You heard that message then delivered by joe biden. Hes welcoming Bernie Sanders and his supporters into the fold. But clearly joe biden is right now the frontrunner, the prohibitive favorite for the nomination. The next move will belong to Bernie Sanders, but the Democratic Party at this moment very much belongs to joe biden. Kenneth and mona . All right, rick, thank you. Democrats really appear to be closer to the end of their nominating process here. As rick klein broke it down, he broke it down even more online on abcnews. Com. He said that biden cruised to victory in missouri. Obviously when were talking about the battleground states, a lot of attention on that, and how it compares to 2016 with Hillary Clinton. Rick klein said Hillary Clinton won the state by barely 1,500 votes out of the more than 620,000 cast in the 2016 primary, and biden easily outperformed there, trouncing sanders, as rick klein mentioned there, across so many categories. It seemed that voters felt that biden is the safe choice. They went back to something that was familiar, something reminiscent of the obama biden administration. Really all eyes on michigan, obviously winning there. Michigan always surprises us. Went to President Trump in 2016. What will happen in 2020 . We will see. Time will tell. Authorities say the planes never Left International air space during the fourhour flight. Turning now to the growing frustration among the nations doctors in testing for the coronavirus. Doctors are pointing to an apparent shortage of tests across the country as the white house promises 4 million available tests by the end of the week. This morning a plea from doctors as they face a surge in potential coronavirus cases. We really have to up our level of testing. We are certainly worried about having enough test kits. We dont know where it is. Thats a problem. Thats a failure in testing. Reporter Health Officials across the country reporting a shortage of tests despite promises from the federal government. Over 1 million tests are out thanks to the diligent work of cdc, hhs when people need a test, they can get a test. Reporter states are claiming those promises were empty. We were promised that tests would be available, 1 million of them, by the end of the week. They are still nowhere to be found. Reporter meanwhile new concerns about even if labs do have the tests, they dont necessarily have the proper materials to prepare the samples. The test kits dont include all the components to test. Thats the disconnect. Reporter according to the cdc, the test is a simple nose swab that has already been done on nearly 7,000 people, and that number is expected to jump to nearly 500,000 this week. The availability of testing in the last two days is getting us where we need to be. Call the Doctors Office so that you dont just walk right in, follow their infectioncontrol procedures for doing that, and then they will decide, working with you, whether a test is appropriate to be done. Reporter still, doctors say theyre faced with yet another complication restrictive guidelines on whos eligible for testing. The cdc advises only a small group of people should be tested, people who have more severe symptoms like fever and difficulty breathing, those who have come into close contact with someone who has the virus, and those who have traveled to an affected area. Those narrow guidelines potentially leaving thousands of sick people undiagnosed, a major concern according to the man who headed up the Ebola Response during the obama administration. There is simply no reason, none, why the United States lags behind nations like south korea and singapore in protecting its people. Over the weekend i was at a briefing with hhs secretary alex azar who said basically theyre scaling up with these tests, and he said they had 1 million already distributed, working on 4 million by the end of this week. But its interesting to keep in mind that they are focusing on Washington State, on california, where the epidemic has hit the hardest. And also a portion of those 4 million tests, its not 4 million patients to 4 million tests. A portion of those tests are for Quality Control as well. Its important, people want to know more about these tests. Our George Stephanopoulos asked the u. S. Surgeon general about what appears to be the lack of testing when it compares to other countries like south korea. 100,000 tests compared to the u. S. There are a lot of questions to be answered on that, and people want those tests. When we come back, the shocking surprise on the finale of the bachelor.
