We have Team Coverage of this Global Health crisis beginning with abcs chief National Correspondent matt gutman who is in San Francisco with the growing concern on that ship. Matt, good morning. Reporter hey, good morning, whit. Developments are coming in fast. Just hours ago the captain of the grand princess announcing that somebody on board required Urgent Medical assistance. They were maneuvering the ship closer to shore for a possible air lift. We dont yet know if this is related to the coronavirus on board. What we do know is in a infection and frustration are arising. Overnight conditions deteriorating aboard the grand princess. A passenger requiring immediate medical assistance. The captain informing passengers the ship was moving to 20 miles offshore. The coast guard has been called and a possible airlift of that guest may be possible tonight. Reporter the nature of the medical emergency is unknown. This comes just two days after test kits were lowered on the ship and a pair of medical professionals and hours after mike pence announced some of those kits tested positive. 46 persons were swabbed. 21 of those on the ship tested positive for the coronavirus. Among those were 19 crew members and two passengers. Reporter the 2,400 passengers already effectively in quarantine in their rooms learning about the infections along with the rest of the country. It would have been our preference to make this news available to you. Reporter kari kolstoe is on board who her husband paul who is battling stage 4 cancer and now fears infection. I go from laughing and trying to look on the Positive Side to tapping my faith to crying hysterically. Reporter there are nine cases of the virus now linked to the ships previous voyage including that 71yearold passenger who died after exhibiting symptoms before getting off the ship two weeks ago. Right now its just numbing. Its trying to process this information and see what our life holds in the next couple weeks. Reporter no word yet where the current cruise will dock or when but outside this San Francisco hospital, theyre setting up tents to handle any overflow coronavirus patients. You know, all of us have stories. So although in theory we understand that nobody wants the ship to dock at their port, but we have lives too. Reporter federal officials tell us the 1,100 crew members on that ship will be kept on board for quarantine. The 2,400 passengers, they will be offloaded at a noncommercial port for testing quarantine. Now, federal officials tell us this has never before happened on u. S. Soil. Nothing quite like this and that is the reason they have yet to fully formalize a plan for the ship. Dan . Were in unchartered waters in many ways. Matt, thank you very much. President trump touring cdc headquarters in atlanta after initially canceling his plans to visit the agency. While there he blasted washington states democratic governor. Abcs Mona Kosar Abdi is in washington, d. C. With that story. Mona, good morning to you. Reporter good morning to you, eva. The president is downplaying concerns regarding the growing coronavirus outbreak. Even insisting that the federal government has the situation under control during that visit you mentioned to the centers for Disease Control in atlanta friday. Anybody that needs a test gets a test. Theyre there. They have the tests and the tests are beautiful. Reporter at the moment the availability of the tests remain unclear. Dr. Anthony fauci of the National Institute of health says theres been a lag in the ability to get people tested. Whit . Mona kosar abdi for us, thank you so much. I do want to bring in our dr. Jennifer ashton, our chief abc news correspondent, Health Correspondent on all of this. First of all, i dont know how youre still standing. Youve been working around the clock. We do appreciate it. I want to talk about what mona brought up. The testing, theres been a lot of confusion over this. Trump says there are plenty of testing for those who want it. Mike pence, the Vice President acknowledged theres been a delay. But on the ground level what are the challenges that still exist in getting those tests . First of all, whit, we need to be able to test hundreds of thousands of people to really get a grip on true numbers here and how many people have been infected with coronavirus even those who are asymptomatic or showing no symptoms and we are far from that. The other thing thats important for people to understand is that if you came to my office right now and i thought you should be tested theyre not in doctors offices. Theyre not in urgentcare centers. Even the hospitals who have them still have to get approval to run the test on the state level and right now its just not possible to test everyone. Nor should everyone be tested. You know, common things occur commonly and right now for the average person coronavirus is not up there but we need to ramp up our capacity in a big way. Weve seen a lot of local officials saying, look, we need the tests and need them much more quickly. I want to transition to the cruise ship weve been talking about. Here we go again. Thousands of people stuck on this cruise ship floating out there. Of course, we had the diamond princess in japan. What have we learned about how to respond to this and what are we doing wrong here . We have to remember were over two months into this. The diamond princess cruise ship showed us that keeping people on a ship with this virus is not effective, nor is it safe. I think a plan could be swab test everyone as they get off the ship, send the people with severe symptoms to the hospital. Mild symptoms on home quarantine with direct contact and followup and even asymptomatic people on home quarantine. There is a plan and it protects Peoples Health in the short term. I want to ask you, elderly patients seem to be taking the brunt of this. What do we do to protect them . Thats the vulnerable population. When we hear school closings, understand its not just to protect kids but their grandparents, as well. Dr. Ashton, thank you so much. Well have much more with you later on in the show here. Much more on the coronavirus in the next hour including dr. Ashton answering your viewer questions and warning about scammers preying on peoples fears and trying to take advantage of the outbreak. Ve when it comes to quarantines . Dan abrams breaks it down. , and i recently had a heart attack. It changed my life. But im a survivor. After my heart attack, my doctor prescribed brilinta. Its for people who have been hospitalized for a heart attack. Brilinta is taken with a lowdose aspirin. No more than 100 milligrams as it affects how well brilinta works. Brilinta helps keep platelets from sticking together and forming a clot. In a clinical study, brilinta worked better than plavix. Brilinta reduced the chance of having another heart attack. Or dying from one. Dont stop taking brilinta without talking to your doctor, since stopping it too soon increases your risk of clots in your stent, heart attack, stroke, and even death. Brilinta may cause bruising or bleeding more easily, or serious, sometimes fatal bleeding. Good morning, sir. Good morning. Good to see you. Congratulations on the new book. Thank you. Lets talk about the varsity blues scandal which continues rolling on. Lori loughlin, it looked dicey for her for a while, but theres new information coming out. Two big developments i believe have been helpful to her. Documents turned over which indicates that the middleman, the person who was the conduit, critical witness, was telling the fbi i feel pressured here to lie, that i feel pressured to tell people that this was a bribe as opposed to a donation and the very defense that Lori Loughlin is going to use here is we thought it was a donation. We didnt think this was a bribe. And so the fact that the middleman here had thought or felt that that was the case is very important. Number two, theyll get some documents from usc which is the school that her daughters went to which will show how other vips got in the back door which could be helpful. Very quickly on the coronavirus, does the government have the power to tell us to selfquarantine . They have enormous power both state and federal government, local. They can basically say to people, you got to get a vaccine, you cant travel. You got to quarantine. The courts have actually evaluated this and time and again they say that the government has enormous power. Lets talk about the new book, john adams under fire, you wanted to get it out in time for the 250th anniversary of the boston massacre where british troops killed some colonial protesters. Why . That was this week and this was this was enormous back then where british soldiers killed five colonists. This is a murder trial. John adams representing the despised british soldiers before the revolution. And we have a 217page transcript of the trial. This is the case which established reasonable doubt. This is the case where john adams said facts are stubborn things. This was an enormous case in history and its just a great murder trial. And so we use the transcript to tell that story of john adams taking on an incredibly unpopular case. We only have a few seconds left here. But talk a little about the importance of that transcript youve referenced. So the transcript allows us to see john adams in his own words. Its not a speech. Its not a letter. Its contemporaneous and it shows you exactly what was happening between the witnesses, it shows you what was happening with the lawyers. And think about that, from 1770, a transcript of one of the most important trials in history. Right. And we use that as the heart of the story. Written on papyrus, im sure. Dan abrams, thank you. Your books are great. Everybody should check out out. Its john adams under fire from dan abrams available everywhere. And well be right back with our play of the day.
