Thats why San Francisco is trying to get ahead of a coronavirus outbreak by declaring a state of emergency even though theres no confirmed cases so far in the state of San Francisco. So why do it in the first place . The Emergency Declaration frees up state and federal money for potential outbreak and allows for better coordination between agencies across the city. City leaders say this needs to happen now because of the amount of travel between San Francisco and Mainland China and as the virus spreads to other countries. Planning, preparation and prevention all key. Theres pretty much planning happening nonstop. The department of Public Health is having a daily phone call with the region, with the state, with the feds. Sfusd also closely monitoring how a potential outbreak would affect schools. The district said they would close schools quickly to stop the virus. T now is the time to come up with a plan on how you would manage a closure for your child. The potential spread to the public in spraens is low right now. She was in oakland to hike with the Group Outdoor afro and highlight the work theyre doing to connect africanamericans in nature and i got to tag along. Hi. Welcome. Welcome to oakland. So happy to be here. Watch your step. This is the moment rue mapp could only dream about seven years ago when her group, outdoor afro was just a blog. I love it. Now here she is, welcoming oprah to a healin hike shes leading at Joaquin Miller park. We like to ground ourselves with outdoor afro but acknowledging what we love about natu nature. Reporter we went on a hike through the redwoods where after a moment she invited us to look up and look within. The redwoods remind me of two things, regeneration after being clear cut and connection. Whenever anything is off or off balance in my life, like last week, we had a crazy week and i literally just go out under the oaks, which i call the apostles, which form a grove for me, and the redwoods in the front yard, and i find peace and sanity there. Thank you for this opportunity. Thank you. Thank you for joining us. After the hike, excitement. Oh, my god, i cannot believe oprah just hiked with us. And for nicole, confirmation. Well, personally i have some decisions in my life right now that i need to make. That moment when we stood and talked about the redwoods being connected, it kind of just happened right there. Oprah had a good time, too. This was fun. So much fun. Yeah. What made you want to come here to oak lan . Well, first of all, when i heard there was something called outdoor afro, and that outdoor afro is breaking the illusion that people of color dont enjoy the outdoors and experience healing and empowerment from it, thats right up my alley. The experience she what is the same experience we have all over the country. Reporter ru started outdoor afro for people who loved the outdoors and wanted to see themselves online and in person. I realized we had a representation problem, that we were connected. We were outside, but we didnt see ourselves in those magazines. We saw we thought that, you know, we didnt have that connection. So outdoor afro disrupted that. Reporter now outdoor afro has grown from Humble Beginnings in oakland to 40,000 people in 30 states and ru hopes this is just the start. What difference do you hope having oprah here to shine a light on this will do . Well, i think it has an opportunity to shine a light of hope, of connection in times when people may not feel as connected. You know, in times when cities dont feel like friendly places. We can shine a light on a beautiful park like Joaquin Miller park and let people know that manature is so close, its right in your backyard. I walked away feeling like that. I had never been to that park before. It didnt take us long to get. There you almost feel like youre in a different place. Its so beautiful. Ru is awesome. I like how its more than just oh, well hike, walk and come back. She asked you questions, had you think about things. Really do some healing. While youre out there. Thats interesting, she said shes not used to seeing her type in magazines. We talk about that all the time, ganes a lot of times dont represent us, whether its the skinny models or the different genders or races. That was interesting. Obviously oprah is impressive, its neat to see a local woman who is super impressive. So commanding in her presence. What she was able to accomplish with yall. I wanted to ask, outdoor afro started in oakland and expanded to all those cities . 30 states, 40,000 people, and its like i was looking because im trying to join. They have every month they meet up and go places. I think its great for people who are new to the city or afraid to go outdoors. The woman we interviewed, she v said she got me whitewater rafting. If it wasnt for outdoor afro i would have never done it. Neat idea. So cool. So nice theres people out there that will take the time and have the energy to do that. Yeah. And want to continue to see it flourishing. Thank you. Youre welcome. Its 5 49 lets talk about the weather on this wednesday. Sfo is clear and 54 degrees right now.
